Hello. For quite a few of you, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
the week gone has been humid by day and by night. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
Southerly winds dominated, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:07
bringing all that warmth of the continent, lifting temperatures | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
in mainland UK to | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
around 34 degrees on Tuesday, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
35 on the Channel Islands. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
The week ahead though, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
get rid of those southerly winds, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:17
we bring air in off | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
the Atlantic, from the West, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
and temperatures accordingly will drop. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
Many of you much closer to around 19 Celsius, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
around average for the time of year, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
if not a little bit lower. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
Bringing about the change, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
this weather front, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
which swept through the last stages of Sunday. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
That puts us into those westerly winds, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
bringing a mixture of some brighter, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
sunny spells through Monday - | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
best of which are towards eastern parts - | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
and a few showers, most likely in the West. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
The showers though, well scattered | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
on Monday, which means most | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
will spend the bulk of the day dry, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
if not the entire day. More likely to see | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
showers in Scotland and Northern Ireland. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
And here, temperatures | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
a little bit lower for the time of year, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
around 15 to 17 degrees. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
But the humid air we've seen | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
across East Anglia and the south-east | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
has certainly cleared. You might just catch | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
one or two showers across eastern England | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
to finish Monday, but through | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
the night, most become dry. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
Showers continue in northern Scotland, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
with a very blustery wind, and by night, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
temperatures dropping away a little bit. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
A fresher feel, but by no means cold, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
temperatures staying in double figures, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
if not into the teens. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
So this is the set-up for Tuesday, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
the Azores High just to the south-west of us, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
low pressure to the north of us, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
so we continue with that flow of westerly winds. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
If anything, a bit more cloud on Tuesday, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
particularly England and Wales, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
more likely to see wetter weather for a time. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
South-west England and South Wales. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
Nothing hugely substantial, the odd shower elsewhere, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
some sunny spells - | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
best of which down these eastern parts, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
where again, temperatures | 0:01:37 | 0:01:38
could lift into the low 20s. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:39
And don't forget, we are still in July, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
the warmth of that sunshine overhead | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
certainly will make itself known. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
Through Tuesday night into Wednesday | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
we are likely to see a bit more cloud | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
coming from this system working its way across, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
so generally, a few more showers | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
across England and Wales. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
Further north, a little bit brighter, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
always breezy though across | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
the far north of Scotland. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
That area of low pressure | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
never moving too far away. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
Through Wednesday night into Thursday though, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
could see a more significant | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
spell of rain. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
We're not talking huge amounts, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
but it will bring what | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
looks like some wetter weather | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
into Northern Ireland, Scotland | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
and western parts of England and Wales. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
At this range, that could be a bit further north, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
could be a little bit further south. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
The further south and east | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
you are you are more likely to stay | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
largely dry, and temperatures | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
very familiar throughout the week, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
the mid-teens to the low 20s. Into Friday night, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
that system just pushes its way | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
slowly towards the North Sea. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
We will continue to see some showers from it, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
not huge amounts of rain admittedly, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
but things will gradually turn | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
a bit brighter in the west. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:36
But the wind is going in | 0:02:36 | 0:02:37
a north-westerly direction later, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
introduces even cooler air to parts of Scotland | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
and Northern Ireland. You'll have noticed, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
through the week I've been mentioning the word "showers", | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
an indication that rainfall amounts | 0:02:46 | 0:02:47
will vary hugely. Some will stay dry, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
and that could be crucial, because, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
after a very wet start to summer, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
things have got much drier across the south and east. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
Some, including on the Isle of Wight, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
we have barely seen a millimetre | 0:02:57 | 0:02:58
of rainfall so far this July. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
And I can't guarantee we will | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
see much more than that, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
because as that low pressure system | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
pushes off into the continent | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
next weekend, we open the door | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
to north-westerly winds, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
keeping things a little on the cool side, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
but it does mean what pushes down | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
in that flow will tend to be showers. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
Showers tend to be hit and miss, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
and the further south and east | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
you are, you're more likely to be dry. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
It doesn mean though, north-westerly winds, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
quite cool for the time of year | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
across northern and western areas, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
and it's likely to be | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
a bit breezier next weekend | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
before things turn a touch warmer | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
for the start of the following week. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
A pioneer. A great American icon. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
She scandalised New York with her abstract flower paintings and found | 0:03:36 | 0:03:41
the solitude and inspiration she needed in the deserts of New Mexico. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45 |
