Thanks for joining me. Very quiet on the weather front across the UK,

0:00:020:00:05

but before we go into the details,

0:00:050:00:07

let's just get a quick update on Hurricane Matthew.

0:00:070:00:10

Of course has caused a lot of devastation,

0:00:100:00:12

it has been devastating that Florida coast into Georgia

0:00:120:00:15

and South Carolina, but the storm's weakening now

0:00:150:00:17

and we're thinking that it's going to pull out into the Atlantic

0:00:170:00:20

and then possibly loop back down again

0:00:200:00:22

as a much, much weaker storm.

0:00:220:00:23

So it's not over yet, this story's going to continue,

0:00:230:00:26

but it is a dying storm.

0:00:260:00:27

Still powerful at this stage, though.

0:00:270:00:30

Back home, what have we got?

0:00:300:00:32

Well, we've got an area of high pressure that's driving our weather

0:00:320:00:35

but also this area of low pressure is sending a breeze in our direction

0:00:350:00:38

and that actually was responsible for a few heavy showers

0:00:380:00:41

across south-eastern areas of the UK during the course of Saturday.

0:00:410:00:44

And actually, we're going to see a very similar pattern on Sunday -

0:00:440:00:48

a breeze will continue to blow in a few showers,

0:00:480:00:50

you see it's picking up moisture off the North Sea

0:00:500:00:52

and then sending these showers in our direction,

0:00:520:00:54

so anywhere from Newcastle, Hull, down into London

0:00:540:00:57

we could catch a few. The best of the weather will always be

0:00:570:00:59

across western areas - this is where you're going to get more sunshine.

0:00:590:01:02

Then Sunday night into Monday,

0:01:020:01:04

the winds will be light, generally, inland,

0:01:040:01:07

not necessarily light along the east coast -

0:01:070:01:09

we might even have further showers here.

0:01:090:01:11

The basic message is, it is going to be quite a chilly night,

0:01:110:01:14

Sunday night into Monday, and first thing, particularly in rural areas,

0:01:140:01:17

so we're talking about the frost hollows, frost pockets,

0:01:170:01:19

there might be some mist, a bit of ground frost in one or two areas,

0:01:190:01:22

but that's going to be the exception rather than the rule.

0:01:220:01:25

But Monday morning is going to be nippy.

0:01:250:01:27

Then that same pattern continues - that low pressure

0:01:270:01:30

that we saw earlier on out there towards the east

0:01:300:01:32

is still sending a breeze in our direction,

0:01:320:01:34

picking up the moisture off the North Sea,

0:01:340:01:36

so again we'll see some showers.

0:01:360:01:38

Some will penetrate quite deep inland, into the Midlands,

0:01:380:01:40

but these western areas will have the best of the weather.

0:01:400:01:43

Northern Ireland might actually catch quite a bit of cloud

0:01:430:01:46

and there could be some spots of rain.

0:01:460:01:47

That pattern is still with us,

0:01:470:01:48

so we've got the high across Scandinavia,

0:01:480:01:50

there are sort of weather fronts stuck in its southern periphery,

0:01:500:01:53

and this low, which we're going to talk about a little bit later on,

0:01:530:01:56

that's trying to push in, but not just yet.

0:01:560:01:58

So here's Tuesday,

0:01:580:02:00

and one thing that you will notice on Tuesday

0:02:000:02:02

is that the wind is going to be picking up,

0:02:020:02:05

so actually for some of us,

0:02:050:02:06

particularly for folks along these eastern coasts,

0:02:060:02:09

it is going to feel cool with that increasing breeze,

0:02:090:02:12

which will increase, actually, even further

0:02:120:02:14

as we head into Wednesday.

0:02:140:02:16

In fact, round some of the coasts and headlands,

0:02:160:02:18

it could be rather windy, and only 13 degrees

0:02:180:02:21

with a stiff easterly will feel pretty nippy.

0:02:210:02:23

One of the reasons we have a strong wind is,

0:02:230:02:25

look at these straight isobars.

0:02:250:02:27

We quite often talk about isobars tightly packed together,

0:02:270:02:29

but we don't talk about the shape an awful lot.

0:02:290:02:32

Straight isobars often mean quite strong winds.

0:02:320:02:36

Imagine sort of like running down a motorway.

0:02:360:02:37

When you get curved isobars, just like round a roundabout,

0:02:370:02:40

you tend to slow down, the winds quite often slow down.

0:02:400:02:43

When you have straight isobars, you get a stiff wind.

0:02:430:02:45

Now, this low here that we've been looking at is trying to push in.

0:02:450:02:48

Here it is, say round about Friday time -

0:02:480:02:51

tries to push in but is still stuck.

0:02:510:02:54

Let's have a look at this in a little bit more of a schematic way.

0:02:540:02:58

This is called an omega block.

0:02:580:03:01

You have to kind of squint to see the letter omega here,

0:03:010:03:05

but it is there.

0:03:050:03:06

When that happens, the weather's stuck in a rut,

0:03:060:03:09

so the high pressure's not moving anywhere,

0:03:090:03:10

it's kind of sitting there, the low pressure's trying to come in,

0:03:100:03:13

and the thinking is it might sort of squeeze in Friday into the weekend.

0:03:130:03:16

But until that happens, for now, it's looking mainly dry,

0:03:160:03:20

rather cloudy, and remember those straight isobars?

0:03:200:03:23

It is going to stay on the breezy side

0:03:230:03:26

with some chilly mornings as well. Thanks for watching.
