Hello, there. A summary of the month of October coming up shortly, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
but before that, I've got some | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
spookily interesting facts about Halloween. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
We've had three consecutive warm Halloweens, | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
in 2014 the warmest with 24 Celsius in Kent, 75 Fahrenheit. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
But 2016 saw the warmest Halloween on record for parts of Wales. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:22
But it wasn't the warmth that's been the talking point through the month, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
it's just how dry it's been - | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
particularly across central and western areas we've seen | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
way below average rainfall | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
with just eastern fringes seeing really around average | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
and the north-west of Scotland | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
has been incredibly dry and sunny. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
In fact, it's been the sunniest October since 1929. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
And the reason for this, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
well, it's all to do with the pressure patterns. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
We had high pressure, really, just anchored up into the north | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
and that dragged in an unusually easterly flow of winds. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
So, from time to time it was quite cool and on the east coast | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
it was at times quite showery too. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
What we should have at this time of year is low pressure up into | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
the north and this westerly flow bringing in milder | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
but wetter weather as autumn approaches. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
But it does look as though we are set to see some cold weather | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
descend across the country - that'll be a bit of | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
a shock to the system over the next few days, I suspect. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
It will be relatively quiet, but, yes, noticeably colder. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
Anyway, through Tuesday we will have some fog around across | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
the M4 corridor, that will lift into low cloud and the odd spit | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
and spot of drizzle from the dying weather front. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
Behind it, something brighter, fresher, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
but certainly sunnier across Scotland and Northern Ireland - | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
8 to 15 degrees perhaps our overall high. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
That weather front will slowly clear away and under clearer skies | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
we'll see temperatures falling away with just a scattering | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
of showers up into the far north but more importantly, it could be | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
a chilly night with a widespread frost across the country. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
So, that will certainly help to bring down the autumn colours, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
the leaves that have been sitting on the trees, unfortunately, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
and another thing that will help is a strengthening wind | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
coming from a northerly direction, and across that east coast | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
it's going to feel chillier with a scattering of showers here. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
Further west, in a little more shelter, not quite as cold, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
but nevertheless, 9 to 12 Celsius. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Now, the high-pressure stays with this. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
Weather fronts trying to push in from the extreme north-west and that | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
will eventually bring some rain with it, but generally on Thursday, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
there'll be a good slice of sunny weather across England and Wales, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
clouding over from the west with some wet and windy weather | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
arriving by the end of the day. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
And look at the temperatures, 8 to 12 degrees. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
That will bring the first significant rain for quite some time | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
across England and Wales as it pushes south and east, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
and then as we move into the weekend, look at the isobars, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
squeezing together and heading from a northerly direction, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
so it stays windy and potentially it stays pretty chilly. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
So that means for the firework displays taking place this weekend | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
it's certainly worth bearing in mind... | 0:02:55 | 0:02:56
A noticeable wind, perhaps gale force at times, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
and it's going to feel pretty chilly as well. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
What's happening further afield? | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Well, looking ahead to the eight to ten-day forecast, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
it looks as though we keep this north-westerly flow developing, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
always making it feel cooler with high-pressure really sitting | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
out into the north-west. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
So, it's going to stay cold for the beginning of November, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
there's a potential for some wintry showers, even at lower levels | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
to the north for a time, dry but largely frosty down to the south. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
So, to summarise, a change of month, a change to the feel. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29 |
