Hello, there. It certainly was a cold start today on Thursday, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
minus 3, minus 4, minus five, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
but it did lead to some very picturesque scenery. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
This was captured | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
by one of our weather watchers in Oxfordshire, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
a lovely winter scene | 0:00:12 | 0:00:13
with the frost on the trees, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
some sunshine beating down, as well, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
but the frost also on the roofs, on the hedges, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
the fences and on the ground, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
but where we saw the sunshine by daytime, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
come the evening, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
temperatures dropped away quite quickly | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
and we saw the fog reforming. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
This is the view from one of our weather watchers in Derbyshire. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
Now, the extent of the fog overnight | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
is open to some question marks, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
cos some extra cloud is drifting in from the west, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
so, by the end of the night, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
I suspect East Anglia and the south-east | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
will see the worst of the fog, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
which will lift slowly into low cloud, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40
or keep it quite grey or quite cold here. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
Notice the south-westerly breeze | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
for Northern Ireland and Scotland - | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
that's going to keep temperatures on the mild side, actually, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
around about 11 degrees for Glasgow and for Belfast, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
but where the low cloud lingers, well, 5, 6, 7 degrees. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
There'll be some breaks in the cloud, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
mainly to the east side of higher ground - | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
but notice we do have a weather front in the north of Scotland, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
that's bringing some rain, | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
and there is a bit of a breeze associated with that, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
and it stays breezy through the evening. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
That rain just drifts a little bit further south. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
Elsewhere, a lot of dry but rather cloudy weather, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
very patchy fog across the south-western quadrant of the UK, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
but I don't think it'll be too much of an issue. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
New Year's Eve itself - | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
well, that weather front's going to bring | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
some pretty wet weather across much of Scotland, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
it'll drift south into Northern Ireland, as well - | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
maybe a little bit of rain to the north-west of England, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
but the south-westerly breeze affecting much more of the UK, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
so not quite so cold in the south and south-east. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
We might even see double figures, temporarily. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
And then, through the New Year's Eve evening, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
that's where the front eventually clears away | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
from southern Scotland and Northern Ireland. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
By midnight, it's probably across northern England | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
and into North Wales, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:37
and it continues its journey ever southwards, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
bringing some rain with it - but behind it, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
some much colder air - | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
cold enough for some snow showers in northern Scotland | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
on New Year's Day - maybe not just northern Scotland, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
the southern uplands could probably see some snow showers, as well, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
but there is some spells of sunshine to be had, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
but it's going to be a pretty grey day, I suspect, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
across East Anglia and much of the Midlands and the south-east, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
with cloud and rain, which eventually pulls away. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
But we keep that northerly breeze going, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
so, as we get towards Monday morning, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
it's going to be cold | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
and it'll be quite frosty, as well. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
Could be some icy patches around - | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
but, actually, Monday itself looks like a pretty reasonable day, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
particularly in those inland areas. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
A good deal of dry, bright and sunny weather to be had | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
after a frosty start. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
A few showers coming in on that breeze, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
mainly to coastal areas in the north, east and west, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
and after that cold start, it'll be a cold day | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
in spite of some sunshine - | 0:02:24 | 0:02:25
4, 5, 6 degrees, maybe 7 if you are lucky. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
So, a cold start to Tuesday, but a cloudy day, I think, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
a cloudier day overall. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
There'll be a little bit of sunshine in the southernmost counties, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
and maybe towards the eastern side of Scotland, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
and a few showers on the western side of Scotland - | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
but, again, after a cold start, we are well into single figures. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
It's 5, 6 or 7 degrees. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
Now, what about the middle of next week? | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
Well, actually, there's quite a strong jet stream | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
coming out of the United States, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
but once it gets to our side of the Atlantic, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
it kind of splits, really, and really weakens off. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
One arm goes to the north of the UK, one arm goes to the south, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
so it's not really the jet stream that'll be influencing our weather | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
through the middle of the week, | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
it'll be this high in the middle of the Atlantic. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
Remember, winds go clockwise around that high, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
so we're going to import some relatively mild air | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
across most parts of the UK, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
but I suspect it will be temporary, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
temperatures probably only getting to 10 or 11 degrees, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
and then, later on next week, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
it looks like it'll be turning a good deal colder. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
There'll be a brisk wind coming down from the north or north-west, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
so it might bring some rain, at times, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
but I suspect it will be cold enough for some wintry showers | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
mainly in the northern half of the UK. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
I'll be back tomorrow night | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
with an update. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28 |
