Hello, and happy new year. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:02
2016 ended on a relatively mild and cloudy note. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
2017 has kicked off with a different feel - | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
it's been clearer and colder. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:09
We've had views such as this one | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
taken by one of our Weather Watchers | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
in Derbyshire on bank holiday Monday. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
Now, as we head through the next couple of days, then, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
things are staying largely settled. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
There'll be some frost around overnight, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
but also a bit of wintry sunshine coming through by day, too. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
So, here's the pressure set-up. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
We've got high pressure sitting out towards the west - | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
still quite windy towards the north-east. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
We've got a lot of isobars on the map here, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
and a frontal system trying to push in. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
So, through the course of Tuesday, it starts off cold and frosty, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
and there'll be some wintry sunshine | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
across many southern parts of the country, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:40
but at the north, a little bit more in the way of cloud, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
bringing slightly milder conditions. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
Eight or nine degrees here. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
There'll be some rain across the north-west of Scotland, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
where it will be quite windy, too, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
whereas further south lighter winds | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
and more in the way of brightness, too. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
Then, as we move through the course of Tuesday night | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
and on into Wednesday, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
once again we'll see another plunge of colder air | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
coming in from the Arctic, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
particularly affecting these exposed North Sea coasts, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
so, for eastern Scotland and eastern England | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
there'll be some sunshine, but it will feel quite chilly, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
and there could be one or two showers coming in. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
Dry elsewhere, a little bit cloudier towards the south-west, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
eight or nine degrees, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
further east, temperatures typically four or five. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
So, looking through the middle part of the week, then - | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
high pressure is dominating the weather, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
but we've also got this frontal system | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
which is just decaying towards the south-west, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
so Wednesday night it's going to be a cold night | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
right down the spine of the country. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
You can see those temperatures even in the towns and cities | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
down below freezing. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
In the countryside, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
a very cold and a frosty start to Thursday morning. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
High pressure still with us on Thursday, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
but we'll start to see these frontal systems | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
in the Atlantic, pivoting round, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
trying to move back in from the north-west as we end the week. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
So, Thursday itself relatively dry and quiet once again. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
A good deal of sunshine and quite a cold feel to the weather. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
Some places not getting above around two or three degrees, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
but we will see increasing cloud and breeze moving in | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
from the north-west. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
That's down to this frontal system here. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
As we move through the day on Friday, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
it looks like that front will start to push its way across the UK. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
It's tending to weaken as it does so, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
but there will be a spell of wetter and windier weather moving | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
gradually south-eastwards across the course of Friday, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
bringing a milder theme, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
but also a lot of cloud and some outbreaks of rain. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
That front may linger for a time on Saturday, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
but it should ease away towards the south, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
allowing high pressure once again. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Drier and slightly cooler conditions to return | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
as we move through the course of Saturday - | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
then on into the second half of the weekend, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
for Sunday and beyond we should see more of a northerly influence, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
once again, to our weather. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
So, a colder spell of weather | 0:02:37 | 0:02:38
as we start next week. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
It does look once again like high pressure | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
will be the dominant factor, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
in fact, in the weather | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
as we head through the course of next week, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:46
but some uncertainty about the exact position of this high pressure. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
The most likely scenario is the high will be towards the south-west, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
drawing in an Atlantic influence to our weather, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
so, relatively mild. There could be some cloud towards the north-west, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
but sunny and potentially frosty towards the south-east. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
A less likely scenario | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
is that high could be orientated more out towards the north-east, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
and that will draw in this flow of air | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
from the likes of Scandinavia and northern parts of Europe, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
bringing colder, clearer conditions with more sunshine by day, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
and frost overnight, but either way, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
it does look like with that high pressure around, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
things are set to stay mostly dry through next week. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
Not quite as chilly as it has been this week, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
with a return to frost and fog at times. That's it, bye for now. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27

Something's coming. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:41
Whatever's coming, | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
I'll know when it begins. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:44 |
