Hello. A lot going on with the weather over the next few days,

0:00:020:00:05

and there are numerous Met Office weather warnings in force,

0:00:050:00:07

so do bear that in mind,

0:00:070:00:08

particularly if you have some travel plans.

0:00:080:00:10

And that's certainly the case for the day on Thursday.

0:00:100:00:13

Strong winds and some snow in the forecast

0:00:130:00:15

may well hamper your travel plans,

0:00:150:00:17

so stay tuned by keeping up-to-date on BBC local radio.

0:00:170:00:22

Here's the big picture.

0:00:220:00:23

Low pressure to the south of the UK, low pressure to the north of the UK.

0:00:230:00:26

In between, quite a squeeze on those isobars.

0:00:260:00:29

Another blustery day, particularly so in Scotland.

0:00:290:00:31

Blowing a gale here, frequent wintry showers.

0:00:310:00:32

Some wintry weather, too, Northern Ireland, northern England.

0:00:320:00:35

Further south, a lot of rain, but as it bumps up into the cold air,

0:00:350:00:38

may well turn to snow in parts of south-west England, South Wales

0:00:380:00:41

and through the Midlands by the afternoon.

0:00:410:00:42

Going to feel really cold, particularly in more northern parts,

0:00:420:00:45

feeling like it's a good few degrees below freezing.

0:00:450:00:48

Then, through the evening, a real ugly mix of rain, sleet and snow

0:00:480:00:51

works its way through East Anglia and the south-east.

0:00:510:00:53

Could see a few centimetres of snow lying on the ground

0:00:530:00:55

by the end of the day.

0:00:550:00:57

Then it clears away, turns really cold and really frosty

0:00:570:00:59

with further wintry showers.

0:00:590:01:00

By dawn on Friday, major towns and cities

0:01:000:01:02

a degree or so either side of freezing.

0:01:020:01:05

Rural spots will go several degrees below,

0:01:050:01:07

so it'll be a cold, frosty, potentially icy start

0:01:070:01:09

to the day on Friday.

0:01:090:01:11

Friday itself, another windy day.

0:01:110:01:14

Strong wind coming down from the north.

0:01:140:01:16

It's going to bring some wintry showers to the western coast,

0:01:160:01:19

northern coast and to the eastern coast as well.

0:01:190:01:21

And a really strong wind down the North Sea coast,

0:01:210:01:24

going to generate some very large waves.

0:01:240:01:25

Could well be some overtopping of some of the coastal defences,

0:01:250:01:28

so bear that in mind.

0:01:280:01:29

Move inland and it looks like a pretty decent day -

0:01:290:01:32

cold and windy.

0:01:320:01:33

Five of six degrees on the face of it, but even

0:01:330:01:35

in Cardiff and London, it'll feel it's around about freezing.

0:01:350:01:37

Further north, it'll feel like it's well below once again.

0:01:370:01:40

Now, Friday night into Saturday,

0:01:400:01:42

the winds are still coming in from the north-west,

0:01:420:01:44

but the air is now coming in from the mid Atlantic,

0:01:440:01:46

so turning things a little bit less cold from the west

0:01:460:01:48

for the first part of the weekend,

0:01:480:01:50

but with some cloud and some rain.

0:01:500:01:52

But six to eight degrees here, brighter further east,

0:01:520:01:54

but still really quite chilly -

0:01:540:01:55

only twos and threes for that North Sea coast.

0:01:550:01:58

The milder air is trying to come in.

0:01:580:01:59

I think it will do for many for the second part of the weekend,

0:01:590:02:02

but comes with a fair bit of cloud and rain.

0:02:020:02:06

Looks like it'll be quite wet, actually, to start the day

0:02:060:02:08

in the south-east of England, East Anglia too.

0:02:080:02:10

But that rain becomes lighter with time.

0:02:100:02:12

Turning milder from the west, though.

0:02:120:02:14

Ten degrees for Belfast and Cardiff,

0:02:140:02:16

sixes and sevens along the east coast.

0:02:160:02:18

So, the milder air is trying to come in,

0:02:180:02:20

but through Monday, again, there's going to be

0:02:200:02:22

a fair bit of cloud and rain with that relatively mild air.

0:02:220:02:26

The rain could be heavy for a time, and it'll be slow to get its way

0:02:260:02:29

towards East Anglia and the far south-east,

0:02:290:02:31

but I think it will do eventually.

0:02:310:02:32

Again, we've got ten degrees for Plymouth and for Belfast,

0:02:320:02:35

sixes and sevens for Newcastle and for Norwich.

0:02:350:02:38

Now, as we head towards Monday night and on Tuesday,

0:02:380:02:41

patchy rain fizzles out across the south-eastern corner of the UK,

0:02:410:02:44

high pressure is building in,

0:02:440:02:45

but there is a big low towards the north and west of the UK.

0:02:450:02:48

That low may well bring some wind and some rain

0:02:480:02:51

into the early part of next week across the north and west of the UK,

0:02:510:02:55

but for many of us, high pressure will dominate.

0:02:550:02:57

Underneath that, it could well be quite cold

0:02:570:02:59

with some patchy frost and some fog.

0:02:590:03:01

Later next week, looks like the high will drift a little bit

0:03:010:03:04

towards the near continent,

0:03:040:03:05

but its influence will still be felt on our shores,

0:03:050:03:07

a cold, easterly wind for many.

0:03:070:03:09

That could bring a few snow showers to the eastern coast.

0:03:090:03:12

But towards the north and west later next week,

0:03:120:03:13

it looks like it'll be relatively mild

0:03:130:03:15

with cloud, wind and rain,

0:03:150:03:17

quite cold and frosty further south and east.

0:03:170:03:19

So, later next week, yes, unsettled in the north-west,

0:03:190:03:21

a few wintry showers on the eastern side of England in particular

0:03:210:03:25

and still some overnight fog,

0:03:250:03:26

and it looks like it will be quite cold for most of us.
