16/01/2017 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. Compared with the dramas at the end of last week,

with the ice and snow and strong winds and big waves,

nothing too dramatic to look forward to this week. That's good news.

A lot of dry weather, too.

The catch is, there will be a lot of this, a lot of cloud,

a rather grey prospect for many.

Just a question of what shade of grey we will have.

Hopefully some breaks in the cloud, some glimpses of sunshine

where you are but don't expect too much in the way of sunshine.

A grey start to Monday morning,

there will be a line of rain through central areas.

Quite a chilly start across East Anglia and the far south-east.

Maybe a touch of frost, the odd fog patch but milder further

north and west, no problems with frost.

But it will be a murky start to the day.

Dry for Northern Ireland and the bulk of Scotland and

temperatures here well up.

Through the day, that damper zone is going to stay put,

although some of the more persistent rain will ease away down

through the West Country and across the English Channel.

Still a line of damp weather here.

Dry on either side and some sunshine for East Anglia and the far

south-east. It will be chilly here, just four, five, six degrees,

milder further north and west, double figures for

Northern Ireland and Scotland

and hopefully a few glimpses of sunshine.

On into Tuesday, no great changes.

We could wake up to frost across the far south-east but it will be

chilly here. Further north and west, more cloud but higher temperatures.

Some damp, dreary weather across parts of northern England.

That's really the pattern for the early part of this week.

Across more western parts of the UK,

more cloud around but it will be relatively mild.

10 degrees at this time of year is pretty good.

Further south and east across the country, that much chillier,

particularly across the far south-east.

Even by day we will be struggling to get much more than five degrees.

With clear skies, the prospect of frost.

There is some uncertainty about the extent of those clear skies but

certainly expect scenes like this across the far south-east at least.

That's nothing compared with the cold across other parts of

continental Europe.

A surge of chilly air all the way down towards Spain and Portugal,

temperatures widely, by day,

staying below freezing with severe overnight frost.

We are living a charmed life back home.

With high pressure in place, relatively quiet.

A lot of dry weather.

A weather front up to the far north-west,

producing thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain.

Not ruling out the odd spot of drizzly rain elsewhere but generally

dry, albeit quite cloudy.

Pinpointing who's going to see the best when it breaks will not

be easy. Again, potentially the far south-east.

Quite chilly here, elsewhere temperatures much of a muchness.

It is a similar story on Thursday, with a lot of dry,

albeit quite cloudy weather.

Some areas of fog around and wherever the skies break

overnight again, the possibility of frost.

So we end the week with a similar pattern.

The high pressure still fending off these rain-bearing weather fronts

to the north and the west.

No surprises that Friday's chart is going to look a bit like this.

Don't take the detail too literally but you get the gist.

A quiet end to a quiet week,

weather-wise, temperatures at sixes and sevens.

Similar pattern through the weekend,

we think, with this block in the jet stream.

However, as the Atlantic developments are starting to

take place with the jet stream waking up, it'll start to

surge its way in this direction, and eventually it will bring

a change in the weather with some rain-bearing weather fronts.

A dry start into next week before the rain will arrive.

It will probably turn windier as well.

The timing of that change is still somewhat uncertain

so stay tuned and we'll update you again tomorrow.
