Thanks for joining me. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
Before I talk about the weather for the week ahead, I want to | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
show you this bullet that we dodged in the last 24 hours or so. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:11
This nasty storm slammed into France, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
bringing gusts of 92mph, very bad weather inland too - | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
hundreds of thousands of people without power. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
And now there's another storm heading to France, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
a similar path as well. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
This one isn't going to be quite so bad, but it's just to | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
the south of us, we're talking about a few hundred miles. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
Instead, what we've got is just a few showers, so we're very, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
very lucky to dodge those two nasty storms. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:40
Not so good for France, of course. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
This is how Sunday looks like in the morning, so pretty nippy, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
a lot of cloud, mist and drizzle in places as well. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
And then Sunday itself, a mix of weather around. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
There will be a fair bit of cloud around, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
but I think the best of any sunshine will be across these more | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
northern areas, certainly the north of Scotland, Moray, Aberdeenshire. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
The rest of us, | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
call it partly cloudy skies and there'll be some showers | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
around Northern Ireland, Wales, down into the south-west as well. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
And then Sunday night into Monday, the skies are going to clear. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
This is pretty chilly air sat on top of us, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
so that means that first thing on Monday it is going to be nippy. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
We're in for a frost, but there's also rain on the way. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
This big area of low pressure will be swinging out of | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
the Atlantic and bringing some big weather fronts in our direction. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
That means a lot of cloud and rain. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
So through the morning, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
increasing clouds in Northern Ireland, Wales and the south-west. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
Meanwhile, we've got that clear, frosty, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
much calmer start across most of Scotland and England. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
Then through the morning into the afternoon you can see how | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
that rain nudges ever eastwards, so the country's quite literally | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
split in half - a wet west, much drier east, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
and I think it's going to stay dry in the east through most of Monday. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
Then on Tuesday, the reverse is true, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
so eastern areas have that weather front which is straddling | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
that coastline, so it's staying cloudy, cold and grey here, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
whereas these western areas, a little bit more sunshine and | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
maybe one or two showers thrown in as well. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
And still pretty chilly - only six degrees there in Newcastle, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
and if it's going to be raining with a breeze off the North Sea, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
not a pleasant picture. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
And then on Wednesday, the remnants of that weather front still | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
in the east, so I think a lot of cloud. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
There won't be much rain but the best of the weather | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
will be across western areas. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
And then we've got another front trying to push our way, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
and it will be nudging in the direction of | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Northern Ireland, western Scotland, only very, very slowly. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
So this is another area of low pressure that's trying to | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
push in and bring us some cloud and rain. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
The reason why it's so slow, because it kind of almost stalls here, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
is because of this area of high pressure. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
High pressures are like blocks, they're like stones - | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
they stop weather fronts coming in and low pressures. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
Look at that, it tries to come in. In fact, that low retracts. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
So, that high, and we call it a blocking high, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
it blocks the weather, that blocking high is with us by next weekend. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
There's some cold, pretty cloudy weather | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
stuck within it as well and all that cold, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
cloudy weather, the thinking is, at least currently, will be moving | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
in our direction and the milder, wetter weather will be pushed | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
back out into the Atlantic. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
So this is what it looks like early next week - cold and cloudy. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
There's just the chance that this won't happen, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
but the most likely scenario is that we get that cold easterly wind | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
with that area of high pressure. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
So, the week ahead summary - we'll have some rain at times, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
it slowly turns colder, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
but just a degree of uncertainty there in that forecast. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
Bye-bye. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30 |
