Hello. It wasn't quite a record breaker,

0:00:020:00:03

but Monday certainly had many of us casting off the layers.

0:00:030:00:06

Temperatures boosted up to around 18 Celsius

0:00:060:00:08

in and around the London area. 18 is 64 in Fahrenheit.

0:00:080:00:12

And even across other parts of eastern Wales,

0:00:120:00:14

central and eastern England, into eastern Scotland,

0:00:140:00:16

we got temperatures well into the mid teens. So why so warm?

0:00:160:00:19

It's all down to the where the air came from.

0:00:190:00:21

Over the past few days we've seen an area of warm tropical maritime air

0:00:210:00:26

push from the Caribbean towards our shores,

0:00:260:00:28

making it feel more like May, rather than the middle of February.

0:00:280:00:32

However, February wants its weather back

0:00:320:00:35

and it will get it later this week.

0:00:350:00:36

We change our air mass, coming in from a northwesterly direction -

0:00:360:00:39

polar maritime air and you will notice the chill

0:00:390:00:42

compared with how we've started the week. That's a few days away.

0:00:420:00:45

At the moment, though, we've still got our winds

0:00:450:00:47

coming in from the west, off the Atlantic

0:00:470:00:49

and still to a certain degree

0:00:490:00:50

some tropical maritime air

0:00:500:00:51

running around the northern flank

0:00:510:00:53

of this high-pressure system

0:00:530:00:55

into the south of the UK,

0:00:550:00:56

but a weather front is remaining

0:00:560:00:58

through much of Tuesday,

0:00:580:00:59

bringing lots of cloud.

0:00:590:01:00

Misty around western coasts and hills

0:01:000:01:02

and occasional rain or drizzle.

0:01:020:01:03

Bright enough starts,

0:01:030:01:04

but cooler for parts of northern England,

0:01:040:01:06

Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:01:060:01:07

but through the day we start to see wetter

0:01:070:01:09

and windier weather spread in from the west.

0:01:090:01:11

The temperatures still well above

0:01:110:01:13

where they should be for the time of year.

0:01:130:01:14

Not quite as warm as Monday,

0:01:140:01:16

but with breaks to the east of Wales,

0:01:160:01:18

to the Midlands and parts of eastern England,

0:01:180:01:20

we could still hit around 15 degrees.

0:01:200:01:22

That warm air is contained

0:01:220:01:23

within these two weather fronts

0:01:230:01:25

but through the night and into Wednesday

0:01:250:01:27

the focus is turned to an area of low pressure

0:01:270:01:29

pushing past the north of Scotland.

0:01:290:01:31

Strong to gale force

0:01:310:01:32

if not severe gale force winds

0:01:320:01:33

of 60 or 70 miles an hour gusts

0:01:330:01:34

across the far north

0:01:340:01:35

and northeast through Wednesday.

0:01:350:01:37

Bright with blustery showers,

0:01:370:01:39

some of those turning increasingly wintry

0:01:390:01:41

as cold air works its way southwards.

0:01:410:01:43

Still, though, in the milder conditions

0:01:430:01:44

across the southernmost parts of the UK,

0:01:440:01:46

here we stay with the cloud,

0:01:460:01:47

outbreaks of rain on and off throughout.

0:01:470:01:49

Temperatures, though, back where they should be

0:01:490:01:51

for the northern half of the country.

0:01:510:01:53

The one, though, to watch

0:01:530:01:54

this week is the what happens between Wednesday and Thursday.

0:01:540:01:56

Still a huge amount of uncertainty,

0:01:560:01:58

the exact depth of this low-pressure system, its exact track,

0:01:580:02:00

but it could bring some fairly stormy weather

0:02:000:02:02

across the UK, especially for England

0:02:020:02:04

and Wales on Thursday.

0:02:040:02:05

On the northern flank of it,

0:02:050:02:06

cold air digging in,

0:02:060:02:08

potentially bringing some significant snow,

0:02:080:02:10

so if you've got any plans

0:02:100:02:11

to be on the move on Thursday,

0:02:110:02:12

stay very close to the latest forecast

0:02:120:02:14

before you head off.

0:02:140:02:16

Those winds will certainly be noticeable

0:02:160:02:18

and around it we'll be dragging in colder

0:02:180:02:20

and colder air which will work

0:02:200:02:22

its way towards the south later in the day.

0:02:220:02:24

So that area of low pressure pushes off, the winds go into

0:02:240:02:27

a northerly direction, they ease down a little bit

0:02:270:02:29

and a chilly start to Friday.

0:02:290:02:31

But Friday compared with Thursday,

0:02:310:02:32

a good deal quieter,

0:02:320:02:33

the showers we see running down

0:02:330:02:35

in that northwesterly air flow will be

0:02:350:02:36

a mixture of rain, sleet and hill snow

0:02:360:02:39

and temperatures well down

0:02:390:02:41

on how we started the week

0:02:410:02:42

by, for some, a good 10 degrees.

0:02:420:02:44

So we finish Friday with quieter weather,

0:02:440:02:46

a ridge of high pressure

0:02:460:02:48

gives us some frost to take us

0:02:480:02:49

into the start of Saturday,

0:02:490:02:50

but as Atlantic air starts

0:02:500:02:51

to push its way in again,

0:02:510:02:53

hitting that cold air,

0:02:530:02:54

again there could be a spell of snow,

0:02:540:02:55

particularly on the hills of northern UK.

0:02:550:02:57

Most, though, wet and windy day

0:02:570:02:59

after a reasonably bright start.

0:02:590:03:01

Temperatures will be boosted

0:03:010:03:03

just a little bit, a little sliver of milder air,

0:03:030:03:05

colder conditions, then, for Sunday

0:03:050:03:06

and then we've got this alternating pattern,

0:03:060:03:09

all down to a fluctuating jet stream -

0:03:090:03:11

this big undulating pattern here,

0:03:110:03:13

it sets us up for the end of the month remaining fairly changeable,

0:03:130:03:17

so temperatures will be up and down from one day to the next.

0:03:170:03:21

We'll continue to see some spells

0:03:210:03:22

of wind and rain pushing its way

0:03:220:03:24

through and in those quieter moments

0:03:240:03:26

with the sunshine

0:03:260:03:27

there's occasional

0:03:270:03:28

night-time frost too.

0:03:280:03:29

Bye for now.
