Batten down the hatches -

0:00:020:00:03

before we talk about the weather for the next few days,

0:00:030:00:06

we must focus on Storm Doris approaching our shores -

0:00:060:00:09

powerful storm, and it could be a troublesome day on Thursday,

0:00:090:00:13

with disruption and, potentially, structural damage.

0:00:130:00:16

Now, the storm is still developing towards the west of us.

0:00:160:00:19

This was earlier on - a nasty area of low pressure

0:00:190:00:22

being driven by a jet stream, as well.

0:00:220:00:24

Very complicated meteorology happening here right now,

0:00:240:00:27

as I speak, but that storm will be developing,

0:00:270:00:30

heading towards our shores,

0:00:300:00:31

and just as it crosses the UK,

0:00:310:00:33

it will be at its most intense,

0:00:330:00:35

and that's why we are concerned

0:00:350:00:36

that some of those winds could cause problems.

0:00:360:00:38

But we've also got some snow on the way,

0:00:380:00:40

so, it's a double whammy with this weather system.

0:00:400:00:42

The snow, admittedly, will fall

0:00:420:00:44

across southern and perhaps some central parts of Scotland,

0:00:440:00:47

so that's the only area where we are expecting

0:00:470:00:49

the potential for disruptive snow -

0:00:490:00:51

but there is an amber warning in force

0:00:510:00:53

from the Met Office.

0:00:530:00:54

Now, it looks like the Southern Uplands,

0:00:540:00:56

the Lowlands of Scotland could get some of that snow -

0:00:560:00:58

particularly around the outskirts of Glasgow and Edinburgh

0:00:580:01:01

and some of us, yes, Scotland

0:01:010:01:03

may be waking up to scenes like this

0:01:030:01:05

first thing on Thursday morning. So, the snow is in the north.

0:01:050:01:08

The worst of the winds

0:01:080:01:09

will be a little bit towards the south of that.

0:01:090:01:12

North-western England, Wales, the north of England,

0:01:120:01:15

the Midlands and also into East Anglia.

0:01:150:01:18

Yet another warning -

0:01:180:01:19

this is an amber warning for the high winds.

0:01:190:01:21

Let's concentrate on these high winds,

0:01:210:01:23

because, unusually, we are going to see severe gales

0:01:230:01:26

and even storm force winds inland at times.

0:01:260:01:28

70 to 80mph gusts.

0:01:280:01:30

These sorts of winds we get

0:01:300:01:31

off the north-west coast of Scotland, rarely inland.

0:01:310:01:33

Towards the south 50, 60mph

0:01:330:01:35

will also potentially cause some problems.

0:01:350:01:38

So, we could have some trees down,

0:01:380:01:40

certainly potential for high sided vehicles being overturned

0:01:400:01:43

in those sorts of winds.

0:01:430:01:44

Some of us will have some fence panels down.

0:01:440:01:46

If you're very unlucky,

0:01:460:01:47

we could this see some pretty significant structural damage

0:01:470:01:50

in one or two locations - and then, later on Thursday,

0:01:500:01:53

the worst of the winds are across Lincolnshire,

0:01:530:01:55

parts of East Anglia,

0:01:550:01:56

a real sting in the tail of that storm,

0:01:560:01:59

and then, later on Thursday, towards midnight,

0:01:590:02:02

that storm pulls away.

0:02:020:02:04

The isobars, as you can see, open up here.

0:02:040:02:06

That means the winds will be lighter

0:02:060:02:08

and we're done with the storm.

0:02:080:02:10

Now, Friday, we have a different story

0:02:100:02:12

in the north-west of the country,

0:02:120:02:14

also increasing winds here, but also some outbreaks of rain.

0:02:140:02:17

A much, much calmer day across England and Wales.

0:02:170:02:20

A little on the cool side in the north -

0:02:200:02:22

temperatures only around 5 or 6 degrees Celsius -

0:02:220:02:24

and then, as far as the weekend goes,

0:02:240:02:26

we have weather fronts crossing the UK.

0:02:260:02:28

Again, quite a few isobars -

0:02:280:02:30

that means blustery conditions on the way,

0:02:300:02:32

but these are quite mild south-westerly winds,

0:02:320:02:35

so we're talking about temperatures up to 11 degrees,

0:02:350:02:39

even across the north-east of Scotland.

0:02:390:02:41

And notice that rain crossing weather front, there,

0:02:410:02:44

across the north-west of the UK.

0:02:440:02:45

That weather front pulls out towards the east on Sunday,

0:02:450:02:48

and then we have another weather front

0:02:480:02:50

coming our way off the Atlantic.

0:02:500:02:51

So, this is the second one, on Sunday.

0:02:510:02:53

Looks like eastern areas, probably the best of the weather,

0:02:530:02:56

driest of the weather -

0:02:560:02:57

but, for Northern Ireland and Scotland

0:02:570:02:59

eventually there will be some rain on Sunday.

0:02:590:03:02

So, quite a changeable weekend, I think, on the way.

0:03:020:03:05

And here's a look at Monday -

0:03:050:03:06

another big area of low pressure across the Atlantic.

0:03:060:03:08

In fact, that's the same one - it's just, it's a big one,

0:03:080:03:10

it just keeps churning weather fronts

0:03:100:03:13

and sending them in our direction -

0:03:130:03:15

and, to be honest, there's not an awful lot more

0:03:150:03:17

I can say as far as next week's concerned.

0:03:170:03:20

It's just going to stay unsettled,

0:03:200:03:22

more weather fronts coming our way, fairly mild.

0:03:220:03:24

It does look as though things might just settle

0:03:240:03:27

towards the end of the week. Bye-bye.
