Hello, again. Any time you add some high energy weather systems | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
into the atmosphere, it sends the computer models | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
into a bit of a spin - | 0:00:07 | 0:00:08
and this is just the right time of year for such systems. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
They're known as hurricanes or tropical storms, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
and this was Hurricane Gert earlier | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
on the other side of the Atlantic. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
The remnants of that will head our way | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
later in the weekend. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
But move further south - this is the spawning ground, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
where we could see more storms | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
and potential hurricanes developing, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
and it's the reason it's been so wet in Sierra Leone - | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
but the more of these storms you add into the mix, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
the more uncertainty you create | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
in the longer-range forecast. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
Not too much uncertainty, though, for Friday. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
We've got a mixture of sunshine and showers - | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
more showers than we had on Thursday. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
Some longer spells of rain lingering | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
in the north-east of Scotland, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
another burst of rain | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
coming across the Irish sea into Wales, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
later into the Midlands - | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
and it will be cooler by three degrees or more | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
in some places. It will feel cooler - | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
not just because of the showers - | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
there will be some strong gusty winds, too, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
near those heavy downpours, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:58
and that will continue to blow some wetter weather | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
eastwards during the evening. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Then, later in the night, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
things start to calm down a little bit. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
The winds drop, many places become dry, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
cooler air, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
so temperatures could be down | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
to about 10 degrees or so in many places. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
As we head towards the weekend, though, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
there's the prospect of some sunshine for a while. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
There'll be fewer showers around on Saturday, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
and then we've got the chance of this rain arriving on Sunday, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
from what's left of Hurricane Gert. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
Saturday, though, fairly straightforward. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
A nice day for many of us, actually, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
especially across the bulk of England and Wales - | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
perhaps Northern Ireland, too. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
Very few showers around here, some sunshine, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
turning hazy later on, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
most of the showers up across Scotland, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
where we've got some slightly stronger winds, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
but not that bad a day, really - | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
but not that warm. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
16 in Glasgow, disappointing. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
21 in London. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
There is some warmer air | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
with what's left of Hurricane Gert, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
and these weather systems pushing in on Sunday | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
likely to bring some rain. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:51
Not sure how much rain - at the moment, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
it doesn't look that there will be an awful lot. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
Many places north and east will start dry, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
we'll see the cloud increasing, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
and then a spell of rain shuffles up | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
from the south-west, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
together with some slightly stronger winds. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
Maybe you'll notice, more, the heat - | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
particularly across southern and eastern parts of England. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Any warmth, though, coming in association | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
with this tropical system, will be brief, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
because there's cooler air in the north, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
and that will win out as we move into Tuesday. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
The higher temperatures likely | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
towards the south-east of the UK. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
How warm it will get depends on how quickly | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
this band of rain moves down from the north, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
there's the cooler air to the north of that, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
with sunshine and showers - | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
and, as we move into Tuesday, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
well, that warmth is probably pushed away. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
There will be quite a keen wind blowing down from the north. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
It will bring some sunshine and some showers. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
Quite a few showers for Scotland | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
and down the eastern side of England, as well, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
and it's cooler by Tuesday, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:46
because this low pressure | 0:02:46 | 0:02:47
is heading its way towards Scandinavia, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
and as it does so, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:50
it allows us to draw in our cooler northerly wind, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
but, at the same time, we should start to see | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
high pressure pushing in from the Atlantic. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
The problem is, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:58
and the main uncertainty is, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
how far north the high pressure will build. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
Some computer models are suggesting | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
that the high is more a feature | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
across the southern half of the UK. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
That will allow more Atlantic winds | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
to arrive across the north | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
later on into next week - | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
But there is a glimmer of hope, I suppose, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
in what has been a disappointing month. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
It looks like it's going to be the southern half of the UK | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
that stays drier for longer - | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
there's the potential for this rain | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
to arrive back in the north, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
but, as I say, there is considerable uncertainty. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28 |
