Hello. It's time to find out what the weather's up to over the next | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
few days, and in the short term, we're fairly confident, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
as is often the case, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
but when it comes to around about Sunday time, that period, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
that's when the confidence goes downhill a little bit. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
In the short term, through the early hours of Thursday, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
there's still a lot of mist and murk around. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
You can see a lot of cloud on the satellite picture here. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
But this area of cloud here, that's a cold front, and that cold front | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
will be introducing a shot of colder air over the next 24 hours or so. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:33
And this process is going to be happening through the early | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
hours of Thursday. Here's our cold front. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
The rain marches into Northern Ireland and Scotland. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Behind it, Atlantic winds drag in that polar air, so you can see | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
temperatures dipping down to six there in Glasgow. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
Still relatively mild across the south, around ten degrees. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
So, let's have a look at the weather on Thursday morning. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
In the south, it's still a mild start, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
temperatures around double figures. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
You can see ten degrees there in London, 11 in Southampton. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
Still a little bit of drizzle around. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
And then we get to around about the north-west of England, | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
around the Lake District here and into Newcastle. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
This is where the cold front is, and the other side of that | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
there's quite a marked drop in the temperature. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
The winds are quite strong, as well, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
possibly up to gale force there, and a number of showers | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
moving through parts of north-western Scotland. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
So, our front makes its journey further southwards during the course | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
of Thursday, bringing a spell of rain for some of us, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
but really, by the end of the day, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
the northern two thirds of the country are in that crisp, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
cold air, whereas in the south it's still relatively mild. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
And then eventually, Thursday night into Friday, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
that cold front moves out of the way. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
There's another little one affecting Scotland, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
but the main message is the high pressure builds, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
so across most parts of the country it starts off on a sunny note. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
In fact, Friday's going to be a beautiful day, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
apart from Scotland, where you'll have showers. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
This little mini cold front moves through | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
and brings some blustery showers, maybe even wintry across the hills. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
Friday night is expected to be clear, which means that | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Saturday morning is going to be frosty, particularly out of town. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
There'll be a lot of dry and bright weather around, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
apart from a few showers maybe closer towards the east, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
and those temperatures typically between seven and ten degrees. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
And then Saturday, after a relatively decent day, comes Sunday. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
This low pressure starts marching in, we think. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
It looks like rain will eventually reach western areas | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
sometime on Sunday, but many central and eastern areas | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
may actually get away with a dry day. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
It's the timing that's proving a little bit tricky with that rain, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
but eventually, what will happen with this low here, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
later on Sunday it moves through. So, this is Sunday night. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
You can see most of us get a bit of rain. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
And then Monday, that rain clears out of the way. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
So on Monday we're in-between weather systems here, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
so we think that Monday should be a fairly decent day. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
So once again it's that dodgy period between Sunday | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
and Monday - we're not entirely sure when the rain clears through. | 0:02:55 | 0:03:00
And then beyond that, the thinking is that another low pressure | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
might move in, so about Wednesday time, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
and it's going to be a typical picture, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:07
drawing up slightly milder air from the south, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
and then behind the back side of this low we'll see colder, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
again polar air coming in, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
so a very typical scenario for this time of the year. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
So the vague message is for next week | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
chilly and blustery across the north, which is | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
what you'd expect this time of year, and just that little bit | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
milder and perhaps wetter, given the | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
lows go further south, in the south. Bye-bye. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29 |
