Hello. Thanks for joining me. The weather is going to be warming up | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
over the coming days as we head towards the New Year, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
but in the short term, Thursday is still looking pretty cold. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
And after the recent rain, sleet and snow that we've had | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
across some parts of the country, it is going to be | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
very icy first thing on Thursday morning, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
and we still have cold air coming in from the north right now. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
But there's mild air out there in the Atlantic, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
ready to come our way in the next couple of days. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
So Thursday morning starts off icy | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
across central and southern areas of the UK, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
but a largely clear and sunny start to the day. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
Might be some freezing fog across parts of Northern Ireland. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
And then, really, it's just a cold and crisp Thursday afternoon, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
with just the odd wintry shower there | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
across northern parts of Scotland. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
Chilly, five degrees at best in London, and for most of us, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
it'll be around two, three, four degrees, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
those sorts of values. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
Now, there is another spell of snow at least potentially on the way, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
and it's going to happen Thursday night into Friday. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
Now, watch what happens. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
It turns very cold and frosty Thursday night, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
another weather front moves off the Atlantic, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
brings a spell of transient snow, so only lasting a certain time, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
in Northern Ireland, Wales and Northern England. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
Difficult to say whether it will settle in the towns and cities, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
for example Leeds, Sheffield, Yorkshire, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
possibly into southern Scotland, but across the hills, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
almost certainly a covering on the way. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
And then, eventually, the wind off the Atlantic | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
will tend to make things a little bit too warm | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
for the snow to last for any longer, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
and it is going to turn to rain. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
So mild air eventually starting to reach us | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
as we head into Friday | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
and certainly for the weekend. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
The New Year weekend, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:38
we've got this plume of very mild air heading our way. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
So let's see what happens, then, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
during the course of Saturday. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
Weather fronts moving across the UK, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
a daisy chain of weather fronts | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
waiting out there for us in the Atlantic. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
It should be a blustery day, as well, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
with low pressure moving through, so windy conditions, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
at least for a time, but look at this. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
That rush of Atlantic air sends those temperatures | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
possibly even into the low teens | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
across southern parts of the UK. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Still remaining cold for a time there across Scotland. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
And broadly speaking, Sunday, so into New Year's Eve, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
low pressure in charge of the weather across the whole | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
of the North Atlantic, sending a rush of winds in our direction. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
So blustery in places, and those temperatures still around 12, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
maybe 13 in the south, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
a little colder in Scotland | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
at around about five to seven degrees there in Glasgow. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
And then, New Year's Eve itself, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
as we head towards midnight, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
it looks like we're in between two areas of low pressure, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
so it just might be the case | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
that we'll have a window of opportunity, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
a window of clearer weather just in time for the fireworks, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
but showers never too far away. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
So the best guess at the moment, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
lots of clear spells around, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
with a chilly wind, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
but be prepared for passing showers | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
at the stroke of midnight or leading up to it. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
And then, New Year's Day itself, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
one low pressure crossing the country, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
more weather fronts heading in our direction, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
more low pressures way out there, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
so we're starting to enter a very turbulent period | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
as we head into early 2018. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
New Year's Day itself, some sunshine, showers, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
brisk winds as well. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
And then the jet stream, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
a powerful one in early January. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
You can see a low pressure here. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
That indicates unsettled weather, and basically, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
that translates to spells of wind and rain, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
the possibility of gales, as well. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
And we could get shots of colder air from the north, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
which would bring a bit of snow to northern hills. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
So a real mixed bag on the way. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28 |
