Hello. A mild but miserable start to our Monday morning. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
The front that brought the rain cleared by lunchtime, but behind it | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
a colder feel as north-westerly winds dragged in | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
cold air right across the country. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
And it's going to stay with us at least for a few days, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
so a colder story for many. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
There will be some snow - not for all of us, but certainly much | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
windier, with gales or severe gales through the middle of the week. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
And in fact, it's going to be a windy day on Tuesday. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
You can see by the amount of isobars squeezed across the UK. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
This little fella here will enhance the wintry | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
showers across north-west England, Northern Ireland and Scotland, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:36
a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Accumulations are likely even at lower levels. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Really, through South Wales and south of the M4 corridor, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
it's likely to be rain. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
But it's a cold feel to the day, particularly when you | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
factor in the wind and particularly on those exposed north-west coasts. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:52
Now, as we go through the overnight period, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
it'll be a case of almost spot the difference. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
There'll be plenty of showers, some of those turning wintry at lower | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
levels across the Peaks and Pennines, maybe the North midlands. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
So it'll be a cold start to Wednesday morning, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
but I suspect sheltered eastern areas may well see some | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
decent dry, sunny weather conditions. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
And in comparison to the cloudy, grey story of late, that might | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
come as welcome news. Fewer showers, generally, on Wednesday. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
Still wintry, though, the further north and west you come. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
The change comes later on Wednesday into Thursday, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
a really deep area of low pressure on the southern flank of that low. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
We're likely to see gales or severe gales for a time, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
and on the leading edge, across central and southern Scotland, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
there's the potential for some snow. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
So keep watching the weather forecast, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
really, for the early hours of Thursday morning. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Severe gales and some snow across southern Scotland | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
could cause some disruption. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
But the good news is that it's moving at quite a pace, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
and it'll rattle through quite early on on Thursday, so for the | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
bulk of Thursday, not a bad day, with some sunshine coming through | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
and perhaps just a tad milder in the south-east for at least a time. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
The wind direction's still coming from the north-west, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
and still plenty of isobars on the chart through Friday, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
so still a cold feel, particularly in any exposure. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
And we're still likely to see a few enhanced showers with that | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
north-westerly flow across Northern Ireland and Western Scotland - | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
rain, sleet and snow not out of the question here. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
But there will be some sunny spells. Temperatures will struggle, though, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
two to six or seven degrees at the very best. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
Now, as we move out of Friday into Saturday, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
we see these weather fronts just drifting to the south of us | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
and this ridge of high pressure building, so things quietening down, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
and the winds will be a little bit lighter as we move into the weekend. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
So, some sunshine, four to eight degrees - | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
again, still not particularly warm - and overnight frosts could be | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
an issue, something that we've not seen of late. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
So as we go into the weekend, a cold and quieter theme. Will it last? | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
Probably not. The high pressure is likely to slip off | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
into the near Continent, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:55
allowing low pressures to move back in from the Atlantic. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
And on top of that, it looks as though the jet stream is set to | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
intensify right across the UK, and that may well drive in low | 0:03:01 | 0:03:06
pressures from the Atlantic and keep things pretty unsettled. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
So, if we're looking further ahead, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
the longer six-to-ten-day period, it does look as though it's | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
going to be a pretty unsettled story, windy with gales at times. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
Temperatures pretty much where they should be for this time of year. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
A lot to take in, I know. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
I'll be back with you same time, same place tomorrow. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28 |
