High pressure and the position of high pressure

is going to play a crucial role in the forecast

for the next ten days,

but on Thursday, it was low pressure

that gave us quite a few showers

across the UK.

Some heavy and thundery downpours

around there as well,

but that low pressure there is moving away

and we've got this bump of high pressure coming in,

settling things down ahead of everything

then beginning to come in from off the Atlantic.

The upshot is that Friday should be a decent day.

Very few showers left by the morning,

the cloud a little more reluctant

to break across central and eastern England,

but otherwise a fine dry day with light winds,

some good spells of sunshine,

probably clouding over a bit more

in Northern Ireland later on

ahead of some rain coming in from the Atlantic.

Temperatures, not bad -

seven, eight, maybe even nine degrees.

A bit chillier in Scotland

because we'll have a frosty start.

That rain that's coming in from the Atlantic

on that weather front there just sort of fizzles out.

It gets swamped by a big low coming in south of Iceland

and a more active weather front,

that warm front there,

and this is the weather front

that will bring most of the rain.

That's arriving on Saturday.

There could be some heavier rain

together with some stronger winds,

particularly across some western hills,

but the rain becomes lighter and more patchy

as it pushes its way eastwards

and eventually some sunshine

particularly across Scotland

and Northern Ireland, but it will be windy,

drawing in some mild air, mind you,

so temperatures on Saturday will be higher

than we're expecting on Friday.

Some windy weather, though,

across northern parts of the UK

as that low pressure moves very close by

and then we've got another system

coming in from the Atlantic,

a very flat sort of wave here,

a little area of low pressure on that weather front.

It means most of the rain will be across western Scotland.

Some other hills could see

a little rain and drizzle.

A lot of cloud around.

It'll be windy out there as well,

but if you break up the cloud

to the east of high ground,

then temperatures could be even higher than that,

possibly 14 or 15 degrees.

Even in the cloud, it's a mild, but rather windy day.

It'll stay quite windy, actually, overnight,

that area of low pressure

takes the rain away from Scotland

and this cold front,

this weather front moves its way southwards

during Monday so we'll see some rain

spilling slowly southwards into England and Wales.

Behind it, we'll get into some slightly colder air.

There'll be some sunshine around,

but there'll be some stronger winds

across northern Scotland again

and there may be one or two showers.

We've still got that rain across the south

and it could be still affecting

southern parts of England, perhaps even on Tuesday.

A bit of uncertainty about that.

Otherwise, some bright weather and some sunshine,

but there's more rain arriving in the north-west

later on in the day

and as we head into

the middle part of next week,

it looks like an area of low pressure

will trundle across the UK,

pushing rain eastwards,

picking up the winds

and changing the wind direction,

so we'll start to draw in a colder

north-westerly wind.

Probably only for a while

because mild air is not far away.

Now, we had this scenario

with high pressure building up more

across the western side of the UK,

allowing us to get into

some colder winds.

Now, that scenario is less likely.

What's more likely

is for the high pressure

to build in a slightly different way

so it's going to be more flat.

It's going to be a flatter high pressure,

more across the southern half of the UK,

allowing areas of low pressure

to get steered to the north.

Now, what does that mean?

Well, it means,

as we head into the outlook

across the south,

it's going to be drier.

Close to high pressure, of course,

but with light winds,

there may be some frost and fog.

For northern parts of the UK,

we're going to find spells of rain

and some showers. Much more changeable

because it's often going to be windy

with the chance of some gales.
