Many of us in recent days asking the question, where has summer gone,

0:00:030:00:06

not only in the UK, but also across Europe,

0:00:060:00:08

where it's been particularly stormy as well.

0:00:080:00:11

As we move towards the weekend, things quieten down.

0:00:110:00:14

The Mediterranean looks consistent and promising,

0:00:140:00:16

but in Central Europe,

0:00:160:00:17

even the showers easing in intensity, potentially.

0:00:170:00:20

Still a few showers across the Ukraine and into parts of Hungary

0:00:200:00:23

and the Balkans, but for the bulk of Central and Southern Italy,

0:00:230:00:26

fine, settled and sunny.

0:00:260:00:28

The same, too, for Corsica and Sardinia.

0:00:280:00:31

Promising for the French Riviera

0:00:310:00:33

and consistent, really, through Portugal and Spain.

0:00:330:00:36

That's where the settled summer sunshine can still be found.

0:00:360:00:39

Inland, we're seeing temperatures close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

0:00:390:00:42

So, for many of our cities, perhaps, across the Mediterranean,

0:00:420:00:46

it's a promising weekend, if that's what you're after.

0:00:460:00:48

Settled summer sunshine on offer.

0:00:480:00:51

Now, if we move out of Spain and Portugal, across the Pyrenees,

0:00:510:00:54

into Western France,

0:00:540:00:55

an improving picture here in comparison to earlier on in the week.

0:00:550:00:59

We've lost the intense sharp thundery downpours.

0:00:590:01:01

A few showers to the East of Paris, moving into the Low Countries

0:01:010:01:05

and perhaps affecting parts of Holland as well.

0:01:050:01:09

So, certainly for our cities here, a little more cloud

0:01:090:01:13

and a fresher feel, but better than it has been in London and Paris.

0:01:130:01:16

We pick up some sharper showers,

0:01:160:01:17

particularly for Amsterdam and Brussels, from Sunday onwards.

0:01:170:01:21

Now, we've seen some real stormy weather in recent days

0:01:210:01:23

across the Eastern seaboard of North America,

0:01:230:01:26

particularly for New York State,

0:01:260:01:28

where we've had a month's worth of rain in one storm system.

0:01:280:01:31

So, the weekend looks certainly an improvement. Dry, settled and sunny.

0:01:310:01:36

In fact, there's not that much in the way of stormy weather

0:01:360:01:38

generally across North America for the weekend.

0:01:380:01:41

So, Saturday certainly the best day for many of our Eastern cities.

0:01:410:01:45

A few showers into New York and Washington for Sunday.

0:01:450:01:48

Further West, where LA still under drought conditions

0:01:480:01:51

and, in some ways, desperate for rain,

0:01:510:01:52

it still remains dry and settled.

0:01:520:01:54

The rain easing in Dallas, with a few sharp showers in Houston, Texas.

0:01:540:01:59

Now, certainly across Australia, things are starting to change

0:01:590:02:02

after some significant weather in Western Australia.

0:02:020:02:05

I'll come onto that in just a moment.

0:02:050:02:07

Across the Northern Territory, it's fine, settled and sunny.

0:02:070:02:10

East Coast not too bad.

0:02:100:02:12

Cooler and showery down into that Southeastern corner.

0:02:120:02:15

Temperatures in Canberra at 11 degrees. Better across Tasmania.

0:02:150:02:19

The rain easing, but a coolish feel.

0:02:190:02:21

It's been really disappointing and cold across New Zealand of late.

0:02:210:02:24

We've got some rain into the far South of the South Island.

0:02:240:02:28

But generally speaking, pleasant enough further North.

0:02:280:02:31

11 to 14 degrees. Not as cold as it has been.

0:02:310:02:33

And for Western Australia, where we saw 30 degrees,

0:02:330:02:36

quite unusual for their winter period,

0:02:360:02:38

temperatures starting to fall away.

0:02:380:02:40

Now, for the UK, it's also an improving picture,

0:02:400:02:43

so I am the bearer of good news.

0:02:430:02:44

Fewer showers around and more in the way of sunshine and warmth.

0:02:440:02:47

One of the reasons why it'll feel warmer

0:02:470:02:49

is we've lost the strong breeze.

0:02:490:02:51

Sunny spells, particularly along the coastline.

0:02:510:02:55

A chance of a few isolated showers developing into the afternoon.

0:02:550:02:58

But for holiday-makers across the West Country

0:02:580:03:01

and for the bulk of Wales, it will be a lovely afternoon.

0:03:010:03:04

Pleasant enough. Temperatures into the high teens.

0:03:040:03:07

The risk of a few sharp showers close to the Welsh Borders,

0:03:070:03:10

but you'll be able to get out across the coastline of Northern Ireland

0:03:100:03:13

for a pleasant walk here, with lighter winds and some sunny spells.

0:03:130:03:16

And despite a disappointing feel to the far North and West of Scotland,

0:03:160:03:20

14 degrees, disappointing for the middle of August,

0:03:200:03:23

nevertheless, a good deal of dry weather on offer.

0:03:230:03:25

Potential for a few showers across the Lake District

0:03:250:03:28

and through the Pennines.

0:03:280:03:29

Worth bearing in mind if you're going to be hill walking.

0:03:290:03:31

Some of those showers could even be still quite thundery as well.

0:03:310:03:35

But down into the Southeast corner, a few showers for Essex and Kent,

0:03:350:03:38

but largely fine and dry.

0:03:380:03:40

All change again by Saturday, though.

0:03:400:03:43

We see gales picking up into the far Northwest,

0:03:430:03:45

certainly worth bearing in mind

0:03:450:03:46

if you're on a sailing holiday, across Scotland,

0:03:460:03:49

with plenty of sharp showers coming through.

0:03:490:03:51

Similar story as we move into Sunday. It stays cool and breezy.

0:03:510:03:55

Top temperatures in the South 21 degrees.

0:03:550:03:57

So, all in all, it looks as though it stays a little unsettled.
