We've got a report on a very special club involved in the FA Cup this

:00:00.:00:00.

weekend, we'll hear from Andy Murray who si still going strong at the

:00:00.:00:08.

US Open and we've got the latest on the driver war at Mercedes as Nico

:00:09.:00:12.

Rosberg says sorry for crashing into Lewis Hamilton.

:00:13.:00:21.

Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.

:00:22.:00:25.

To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode.

:00:26.:00:27.

We have a very mixed bag. We have Mystery Road, an Australian thriller

:00:28.:00:41.

which crosses generic boundaries. We have If I Stay, based on the young

:00:42.:00:48.

adult bestseller by Gail Foreman. And we have Obvious Child, a

:00:49.:00:50.

romantic comedy with a twist which has caused some eruptions in

:00:51.:00:56.

America. Mystery Road and the Australian outback. Mystery Road is

:00:57.:01:01.

a thriller, a murder mystery, a Western. It start Eric Peterson as

:01:02.:01:08.

Detective Joe Swan, he has been away from his hometown in the big smoke

:01:09.:01:12.

he comes back to his hometown where he finds himself investigating a

:01:13.:01:16.

harrowing murder mystery, here is a clip. You know I have had nothing

:01:17.:01:30.

like this. Sooner or later, you were going to get it. I guess today is

:01:31.:01:36.

your lucky day. What can you give me? I've got every spare wheel in

:01:37.:01:44.

the drug squad. Frank's living tomorrow. You're just going to have

:01:45.:01:52.

to write their back for a while `` ride bareback for a while. Things

:01:53.:02:01.

have changed since you've been away. We've got a young girl stuffed onto

:02:02.:02:20.

the highway... I know. I know. I think you can tell the brooding

:02:21.:02:26.

sense of menace. What is interesting is as he starts to investigate this

:02:27.:02:31.

mystery, discovers a widening web of drugs and sexual exploitation but

:02:32.:02:35.

the solution to the crime isn't really the point. The point is a

:02:36.:02:38.

story of a man who is caught between two worlds. Eric Peterson is

:02:39.:02:46.

described as an aborigine copper who turns on his own people. He is also

:02:47.:02:50.

treated with suspicion by the indigenous community who think he

:02:51.:02:53.

has crossed the line and gone over to the other side. The film is about

:02:54.:02:57.

somebody trying to find their own identity between two communities.

:02:58.:03:02.

Generically it is interesting. It takes place in locations like

:03:03.:03:11.

mystery creak and slaughter Hill but actually it is like a very brooding

:03:12.:03:15.

film, interested in cultural, racial, economic politics but very

:03:16.:03:22.

western. The central character wears a Stetson and carries a Winchester.

:03:23.:03:29.

It is playing with Jonah convention. `` genre convention. In the past he

:03:30.:03:35.

has made more experimental films. In this case he has made a generic

:03:36.:03:40.

movie which can be seen as a cross between Chinatown and no country for

:03:41.:03:44.

old men, exploring broiling tensions but within the framework of a murder

:03:45.:03:51.

mystery. I thought it was very impressive some people might have

:03:52.:03:56.

found it too generic, it held my attention and Eric Peterson is

:03:57.:04:00.

terrific as the central conflict it antihero, I thought it was very

:04:01.:04:04.

impressive. Some people have complained that there are loose ends

:04:05.:04:10.

of the murder mystery which are not tied up, but for me that was not the

:04:11.:04:15.

point, it was the wrong detail. If I Stay. It is based on a young adult

:04:16.:04:22.

best seller, featuring a young girl who is this a borrowed `` who's

:04:23.:04:30.

disembodied spirit walks a hospital. She sees herself being visited by

:04:31.:04:33.

her friends and her family after a car crash. During the course of this

:04:34.:04:38.

strange experience, we see her unfolding relationship with a

:04:39.:04:45.

character who loves the rocket are, she loves the cello `` the rock

:04:46.:04:54.

guitar. Obviously there is a degree of mawkish sentimentality. If you

:04:55.:04:58.

think of a record like leader of the pack, there is a great pop culture

:04:59.:05:05.

thing, romance and tragedy. Within those combines it does it better

:05:06.:05:13.

than you think. The script is sharper than you might expect, the

:05:14.:05:17.

lead actress actually looks like she is playing the cello. It is what it

:05:18.:05:26.

is, I think its target audience is the young teen audience, but I think

:05:27.:05:30.

it does what it does rather well. It is not as good as the fault in our

:05:31.:05:34.

stars, which I thought was rather more profound, but it is raised by

:05:35.:05:41.

decent performances and a nice cameo from the grandfather character who

:05:42.:05:46.

lifts the level higher. The third film of the week is Obvious Child.

:05:47.:05:56.

This has divided audiences in the states. A comedian finds herself

:05:57.:06:01.

pregnant and is clear on the course of action she's going to take. I

:06:02.:06:06.

can't believe he walked into the store. That is a sign. Saying? That

:06:07.:06:16.

we should start our beautiful life together. I am not a straight guy

:06:17.:06:22.

but my guess is most of them would hate that gift. You are saying a guy

:06:23.:06:27.

doesn't want a drunk pregnant girl in a box? Maybe you want to tell

:06:28.:06:36.

him. Why? You don't owe him, you don't know him. Maybe he deserves to

:06:37.:06:41.

know that this happened, that I am not a psycho and I'm going to get an

:06:42.:06:45.

abortion. If I got someone pregnant, I would want to know.

:06:46.:06:52.

In America it raised hackles, one commentator says, if America laughs

:06:53.:06:56.

at this, America is the on redemption, because it deals with

:06:57.:07:00.

abortion. That is not the central theme but the fact it deals with it

:07:01.:07:04.

at all is unusual in mainstream cinema. It is more interesting to

:07:05.:07:08.

concentrate on whether it is a good movie and it really is. It has very

:07:09.:07:13.

well drawn characters. Each one has complexities, whether it is mothers,

:07:14.:07:17.

fathers, lovers, friends, they are all drawn in integrates strokes ``

:07:18.:07:23.

intricate strokes. It is up and Frank but not tub thumping, it is

:07:24.:07:29.

clear in its agenda but it is not an agenda movie. The whole thing leads

:07:30.:07:33.

up to Valentine's Day and could save twist on what you would think of as

:07:34.:07:36.

the sentimental, mawkish romantic comedy. I am surprised it has rough

:07:37.:07:44.

at `` has ruffled as many feathers as it has but I thought it was very

:07:45.:07:49.

worthwhile. Let's talk about the one that you would pick out of

:07:50.:07:52.

everything that is out there. The The Cabinet of Dr Caligari has just

:07:53.:07:55.

been released, I imagine you have seen it in the way that everybody

:07:56.:07:59.

has seen it, even if they haven't. It is described as the first ever

:08:00.:08:02.

horror movie which isn't entirely true. It is an expressionist

:08:03.:08:06.

masterpiece from the silent period, a story of a hypnotist who is sent

:08:07.:08:13.

out to do his evil bidding and every single frame is archetypal. Every

:08:14.:08:16.

frame, you have seen echoing through cinema for 100 years since. It

:08:17.:08:21.

doesn't matter if you get colour or sound or 3D, you still see the ghost

:08:22.:08:27.

of Dr Caligari. It is coming out on Blu`ray next month. If you get a

:08:28.:08:30.

chance to see it, check it out because it is worth seeing it

:08:31.:08:33.

projected and it is a beautiful restoration. A strong

:08:34.:08:38.

recommendation. What about if we are sitting at home on the sofa? Same

:08:39.:08:44.

colour diary is a masterpiece is not controversial, saying that

:08:45.:08:46.

Transcendence is worth seeing is slightly more so. `` saying Dr

:08:47.:08:52.

Caligari is a masterpiece is not controversial. I think it is

:08:53.:08:56.

ambitious and interesting 70s inflected science`fiction movie, it

:08:57.:09:01.

looks great. It is not a Johnny Depp film despite the fact he is right

:09:02.:09:04.

there on the front, it is kind of a poor bet any film, it is a film

:09:05.:09:06.

about ideas `` call it is true it does not work for

:09:07.:09:17.

everybody, it kind of failed in cinemas. I think it is really worth

:09:18.:09:22.

giving a second that. If you like Samaras, Silent running,

:09:23.:09:26.

science`fiction films are about something. It does not fit all its

:09:27.:09:30.

target but I like the fact it is ambitious. If it didn't succeed the

:09:31.:09:37.

first time around, maybe it is about to be revived? That assumed critics

:09:38.:09:40.

have any say whatsoever in what people say and I have yet to have

:09:41.:09:46.

that proven! Thank you very much! A quick reminder before we go:

:09:47.:09:55.

reviews from across the BBC online, including all our previous shows.

:09:56.:09:59.

That's it for this week. Thanks for watching. Goodbye.

:10:00.:10:13.

Whether it involves a trip to the cinema or staying at home with a

:10:14.:10:18.

DVD, many of you are making plans and the weather is set fair. A lot

:10:19.:10:24.

of dry weather around this weekend and some good sunny spells as well.

:10:25.:10:29.

Once you are in that sunshine it should feel warm, not desperately

:10:30.:10:30.
