All that and much more at 6:30pm. Now it is time for the Film Review.

:00:00.:00:19.

Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.

:00:20.:00:22.

To take us through this week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode.

:00:23.:00:25.

Well, as I'm sure you must have noticed, there is a new Bridget

:00:26.:00:37.

Jones movie, Bridget Jones's baby. Very different, we have The Clan, an

:00:38.:00:42.

Argentinian crime thriller. And something very unusual, Hunt For The

:00:43.:00:49.

Wilderpeople from New Zealand. Bridget Jones won, I liked, Bridget

:00:50.:00:55.

Jones two, no. How is Bridget Jones three? It is somewhere in the

:00:56.:00:59.

middle. Bridget Jones is back older but not necessarily wiser. We start

:01:00.:01:07.

with her 43rd birthday and we wonder how she gets here again? Then fate

:01:08.:01:13.

throws not one but two men in her path. One is Colin Firth's Mark

:01:14.:01:19.

Darcy for whom she still holds a flame but then Patrick Dempsey's

:01:20.:01:22.

online dating magnate who she meets at a muddy festival and she spends

:01:23.:01:33.

the night in a glamping yurt. Then, it is not a plot spoiler because it

:01:34.:01:36.

is the title, she finds out she's pregnant that is not sure which of

:01:37.:01:41.

the two is the father. Here is the clip. You are single,

:01:42.:01:49.

right? I suppose so. How did you two meet?

:01:50.:01:58.

LAUGHTER It is sort of a funny story, sort

:01:59.:02:06.

of! You see, a few months ago, on the fourth of the month I met Jack

:02:07.:02:12.

at a music festival. Right. And we got on very well. And sort of, had,

:02:13.:02:18.

relations. And the next thing, that is to say on the 11th of the month,

:02:19.:02:25.

at Jude's baby's christening, to be precise, following the consumption

:02:26.:02:29.

of a lot of alcohol, Mark and I had similar relations. And this is the

:02:30.:02:34.

funny part. Owing to these relations, the resulting life form

:02:35.:02:38.

currently residing in my tummy could in fact be either of yours.

:02:39.:02:47.

I love the Italian waiter. You laughed three times in that clip! Is

:02:48.:02:53.

a comedy makes you laugh six times it counts as a comedy so that easily

:02:54.:02:57.

passed. The screenplay is co-written by Emma Thomson who has given

:02:58.:03:00.

herself the best lines. Every time she is on screen it is relief funny

:03:01.:03:05.

and almost every line she delivers is funny. Elsewhere, it is not so

:03:06.:03:10.

even. It is very broad comedy, some gags work and some don't. Some are

:03:11.:03:16.

past their tell by date. There is a routine about the gangland style

:03:17.:03:23.

dance and a joke about cats which look like Hitler. That goes back to

:03:24.:03:28.

the birth of the Internet. There is a funny scene with a revolving door.

:03:29.:03:32.

And there is a huge amount of goodwill towards this character.

:03:33.:03:37.

People do want this character, they root for the character of Bridget

:03:38.:03:42.

Jones. Colin Firth looks spectacularly anguished in that

:03:43.:03:45.

quite British way that he does or through the film. It is not great,

:03:46.:03:50.

it is uneven. Every minute Emma Thompson is on screen, it is

:03:51.:03:54.

terrific and for the rest of it, it is good enough. It is quite a relief

:03:55.:03:59.

that it is not two posh British Loucks fighting for her, there is a

:04:00.:04:06.

token American? Yes but there are is nothing you have not seen before. --

:04:07.:04:12.

British blokes. It is a bit like meeting an old friend. Sometimes it

:04:13.:04:18.

is awkward and sometimes it is different. But McDonald's has the

:04:19.:04:23.

same hamburger every day. I am not sure you want to liken this to a

:04:24.:04:29.

fast food chain! I just threw my pen across the table! Shall we move onto

:04:30.:04:36.

The Clan? The story, which is rooted in reality is about the Puccio

:04:37.:04:46.

family. This family hides this hideous kidnapping and murder.

:04:47.:04:50.

Essentially, what the film does is counter pose scenes of Thomas the

:04:51.:04:54.

city with scenes of really grim and grisly violence. -- domesticity.

:04:55.:05:04.

This is done by the director using upbeat pop music counter exposed

:05:05.:05:16.

with scenes of grim violence. There is the sense that this microcosm

:05:17.:05:23.

represents something much larger and more sleeping corruption. And there

:05:24.:05:29.

is an absolutely terrific performance by the lead actor who is

:05:30.:05:42.

the white-haired steely eyed father, played by Guillermo Francella. He

:05:43.:05:45.

keeps saying I am doing this for you. It is genuinely uncomfortable

:05:46.:05:51.

viewing as it is meant to be but razor sharp stylistically. It is one

:05:52.:05:54.

of those films you never relax into the Cusiter such -- you never relax

:05:55.:06:02.

into because it is such a hard-hitting story. In those

:06:03.:06:08.

Argentinian films the government is generally the bad guy in the

:06:09.:06:12.

background. It is absolutely background noise all the way

:06:13.:06:17.

through. The television and radio is on. It is rooted very clearly in its

:06:18.:06:22.

time period. All the time you get the sense you are watching a small

:06:23.:06:27.

version of something which is much wider. There is one section when a

:06:28.:06:32.

colleague says the faces of the boss has changed but give it a while and

:06:33.:06:36.

everything will go back to normal, and normal means quite terrible.

:06:37.:06:41.

There are moments which are genuinely bone chilling. Now the

:06:42.:06:54.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople. You said wilder people. I thought it was

:06:55.:06:57.

wilder people but it is more like wildebeest. It is a hit which

:06:58.:07:04.

deserves to do well in cinemas here. It is the story of a young orphan,

:07:05.:07:11.

Ricky, played by Julian Denison who is sent to live on a rural farm with

:07:12.:07:15.

foster parents a lap and uncle Ted. Here a clip which gives you a taste

:07:16.:07:23.

of the tone of the film -- aren't a la and uncle Ted. I will need to

:07:24.:07:27.

inspect your property to make sure it is up to our high standard. Fine.

:07:28.:07:36.

What do you think? Yes, cool. We will come in in eight weeks or so

:07:37.:07:43.

just to check on... Who is that Crocodile Dundee Guy? That is my

:07:44.:07:51.

husband Hector. He is giving the pig at AD back. I see he has a rifle.

:07:52.:07:59.

Just keep it away from this little guy. Who knows what he is capable

:08:00.:08:06.

of? So he is all yours. No returns! Just joking! You have got my number

:08:07.:08:12.

so give me a call. Goodbye, Ricky. Goodbye, Ricky.

:08:13.:08:20.

I laughed six times! It is more consistently funny than Bridget

:08:21.:08:23.

Jones but it is also more consistently poignant. What happens

:08:24.:08:30.

is the young boy and Hec played by Sam Neill who you saw coming out of

:08:31.:08:35.

the wilderness, they go into the wilderness tomorrow. The film is

:08:36.:08:40.

about their relationship and the way they bicker and bond. It is really

:08:41.:08:45.

poignant and really moving. It is often funny but in that strange

:08:46.:08:51.

off-kilter, something is to do with the timing. It has a wonderful

:08:52.:08:56.

rhythm to it. The scenery is fantastic but the film focuses in on

:08:57.:09:00.

the central relationships with the characters. It does that thing you

:09:01.:09:05.

want all movies to do, you end up caring about them. You end up caring

:09:06.:09:09.

what happens and wanting things to work out for them. I saw this with a

:09:10.:09:16.

bunch of different people and young and old alike all really enjoyed it.

:09:17.:09:20.

They all got something out of it. Is it a bit like the animation Up? A

:09:21.:09:26.

grumpy, overweight guy and a young kid, they should not get on but they

:09:27.:09:33.

do. Until you mentioned that, that had not occurred to me but now I

:09:34.:09:37.

will not be able to get it out of my head! What I will say is go and see

:09:38.:09:40.

it, it is really terrific and really different. It is quite a good week.

:09:41.:09:47.

Your Best of the week? Captain Fantastic. It is about a family

:09:48.:09:53.

living in the forest. Is he the best father in the world or the worst

:09:54.:09:58.

father in the world? They have to go into civilisation for a funeral. It

:09:59.:10:04.

is terrific performances by the entire ensemble, particularly George

:10:05.:10:08.

Mackay who continues to be one of our brightest rising stars and a

:10:09.:10:12.

great central performance by the go Mortenson. And Green Room is your

:10:13.:10:22.

recommendation? This is out on DVD. This is a story about a punk band

:10:23.:10:28.

who end up playing in a rural road house which turns out to be full of

:10:29.:10:33.

neo-Nazis led by Patrick Stewart. They then get trapped in the Green

:10:34.:10:37.

Room after something terrifying happens. It is a really stripped

:10:38.:10:53.

down siege/ stroke movie. It has really great performances. I did not

:10:54.:10:59.

know which way it was going. It was a bit like Assault on Precinct 13,

:11:00.:11:08.

meets River's Edge, via Deliverance. Any of those films I would go and

:11:09.:11:15.

see. Probably starting with Hunter the wilder people. That really

:11:16.:11:21.

deserves your patronage. Mark, thank you. -- Hunt For The Wilderpeople.
