Test match between England and Pakistan. That is on sports day at

:00:00.:00:00.

6:30 p.m.. Now on BBC News, it is time for The Film Review.

:00:00.:00:19.

Hello and welcome to The Film Review on BBC News.

:00:20.:00:23.

To take us through this week's cinema releases is Anna Smith.

:00:24.:00:26.

Suicide Squad, the film everyone on the internet is talking about the

:00:27.:00:34.

moment. DC comics adaptation, super villains trying to save the world.

:00:35.:00:38.

Margot Robbie stars with Will Smith and a host of other stars. Then we

:00:39.:00:47.

The Carer. Ryan Cox plays a man who befriends his care. And finally, not

:00:48.:00:54.

for love. It is a Franco-Belgian film. His digitally shrunk, the

:00:55.:01:00.

actor here, to appear forfeit five. We will get to that in a moment.

:01:01.:01:04.

Suicide Squad, lots of people want to see it. They do. There has been a

:01:05.:01:08.

lot of talk about the fact that a number of critics have hated this

:01:09.:01:13.

film and fans are up in arms. I am in the middle. I found it vaguely

:01:14.:01:15.

disappointing although it has some merits. The setup is this. The

:01:16.:01:24.

Government won't to face up to a new enemy and they go to these super

:01:25.:01:29.

villains who are in high security prisons. Will Smith plays Deadshot,

:01:30.:01:35.

who is one of them. There are laws with superpowers. They are all

:01:36.:01:38.

gathered together and given lots of weaponry and sent off into

:01:39.:01:42.

guaranteed danger. Let's look at the clip.

:01:43.:01:48.

The injection you got is an Alnwick explosive. It is as powerful as a

:01:49.:01:53.

hand grenade. You disobey me and you die. You try to escape, you die. If

:01:54.:02:01.

you otherwise irritate or vex me, guess what, you die. I am knowing to

:02:02.:02:08.

be quite vexing. I am just for warning you. Lady, shut up! This is

:02:09.:02:15.

the deal. You're going somewhere very bad to do something that will

:02:16.:02:19.

get you killed. Until that happens, you're my problem. Is that like a

:02:20.:02:30.

pet? Yes. Grab what you need for a fight. Wheels up in ten.

:02:31.:02:35.

That scene is the dirty dozen with superheroes. You have got it. We

:02:36.:02:41.

have quite a fund set up where we are introduced to each one with

:02:42.:02:45.

their own soundtrack. Unfortunately, this is the point after which it

:02:46.:02:50.

gets quite dull. It gets into long extended action sequences against

:02:51.:02:53.

enemies that seem a bit vague. There is the Enchantress conjuring up

:02:54.:02:56.

armies, played by Cara Delevingne. All a bit odd. What you saw is the

:02:57.:03:01.

best and worst part of this movie, Margot Robbie. She was quite funny

:03:02.:03:05.

in that scene. She's a great actress and very charming. She plays this

:03:06.:03:08.

character called Harley Quinn, a cycle Barbie type. -- cycle Barbie.

:03:09.:03:19.

But she is basically a victim of abuse. With the Joker, played by

:03:20.:03:23.

Jared Leto, she was his psychiatrist and becomes hypnotised and

:03:24.:03:33.

enthralled by him. One of the criticisms is that these bad people

:03:34.:03:38.

just aren't bad enough. They could, with a herbal It is like it was a

:03:39.:03:48.

movie made by committee and what about. To return to the dirty dozen,

:03:49.:03:54.

one of my ten great films, Delhi Savalas and others, they are pretty

:03:55.:04:00.

evil people. It works as a plot idea. -- Telly. It is setup like

:04:01.:04:08.

that and then it is a bit a let down. The Carer, Brian Cox. This is

:04:09.:04:17.

a gentle paste registrar. But it is a certificate 15 with some choice

:04:18.:04:21.

language. He is an ageing thespian who has a carer who is an aspiring

:04:22.:04:27.

actress. The two former Dutch born. The nice thing is that you often see

:04:28.:04:31.

these films with the grand mansion and romance. This is a platonic

:04:32.:04:36.

friendship and a man who is vile to his family, led by Emilia Fox, who

:04:37.:04:43.

is his daughter, but there is a rather sweet friendship developing.

:04:44.:04:51.

Brian Cox is wonderful. Brian Cox is brilliant. One of the best things to

:04:52.:04:55.

come out of Dundee ever. He is excellent. It really is his show.

:04:56.:05:00.

There are some clunky dialogue and obvious expedition in here. Some

:05:01.:05:04.

poor setups. But, you know, he is fantastic. The film is about growing

:05:05.:05:13.

old, which happens to us all. The sort of On Golden Pond, that type of

:05:14.:05:22.

thing, it sometimes gets to me, the sentimentality. It is on the

:05:23.:05:27.

sentimental side. You have to be in an indulgent mood. The first time I

:05:28.:05:35.

saw it... I can forgive Bangkok 's anything. He is terrific. Up For

:05:36.:05:42.

Love. This is almost a shot for shot remake of another film. The main

:05:43.:05:48.

actor plays a man who is four feet five and digitally shrunk. All sorts

:05:49.:05:53.

of techniques, like body doubles, have been used. It is quite

:05:54.:05:59.

distracting. The as a blind date with who is tall. The fault of each

:06:00.:06:03.

other but she is kind of uncertain about it, especially when she

:06:04.:06:07.

introduces him to her family. Let's look at the clip.

:06:08.:07:12.

Of course, the unspoken joke there is that size does matter, actually.

:07:13.:07:22.

It's a matters to her. Yes, and it is quite believe in that it does

:07:23.:07:27.

examine that. She says, I love you but I dreamt that my Prince Charming

:07:28.:07:31.

would look assembly. It transfers the lot of relationships. People

:07:32.:07:34.

thinking, should I be searching for what I imagine in my mind's I should

:07:35.:07:38.

I be compromising or should I not be so prejudiced? Being friendship can

:07:39.:07:42.

be quite un-PC about that. It seems to have more fun when it is not

:07:43.:07:46.

examining that issue, when it is actually having a bit of a laugh at

:07:47.:07:51.

his size in a very affectionate way. It is a very open and one film. The

:07:52.:07:55.

way that it is shot, he is five foot nine, playing forfeit five -- four

:07:56.:08:05.

feet five, is a distracting? He's not always in proportion. It is very

:08:06.:08:10.

difficult with visual effect to keep consistency because they are using a

:08:11.:08:14.

variety of things. Actually, I felt, why not, in the spirit of the film,

:08:15.:08:18.

cast someone who is actually four feet five? If they had a Hollywood

:08:19.:08:25.

remake, beaded English could be -- Peter Ebdon -- Peter Dinklage would

:08:26.:08:36.

be perfect. It is an interesting question. Anyway, The Commune. I

:08:37.:08:42.

love this film. The Danish director who did The Hunt, tremendous

:08:43.:08:49.

director. This is slightly lighter. It is about a commune in the 1970s,

:08:50.:08:53.

and he should not abated because he grew up in one in 70s. A teenage

:08:54.:08:59.

girl represents his character. It is not from her point of view, it is

:09:00.:09:02.

from the point of view of the adults. Some terrific adults, they

:09:03.:09:08.

are playing a couple who inherit this house and are a bit bored and

:09:09.:09:13.

think, let's just have a commune. She's a newsreader, interestingly.

:09:14.:09:17.

They decide to throw the doors open to friends and hippies. But it has

:09:18.:09:21.

its cost. It is a funny and light film in many ways but in terms of

:09:22.:09:24.

the depiction of her relationship with him, it gets quite dark and

:09:25.:09:27.

interesting as she struggles to live up to the ideals that she is trying

:09:28.:09:32.

to live by. This idea of free love. Can she actually do it? Commune with

:09:33.:09:37.

a newsreader... It is my idea of hell. That kind of setting is quite

:09:38.:09:42.

common in North Germany and Denmark in the 1970s. The period to which it

:09:43.:09:47.

relates. It is. It is treated as quite normal. It is an interesting

:09:48.:09:51.

insight into the time. We might think of it now as bed-hopping but

:09:52.:09:54.

actually it is more about communal living. And males sharing their

:09:55.:10:00.

lives together, sharing money. It is a very hippy ideal. The DVD is

:10:01.:10:05.

Mapplethorpe: Look At The Pictures. Mapplethorpe, who was incredibly

:10:06.:10:08.

controversial and eight US in the 70s and 80s because of the subject

:10:09.:10:12.

matter of his pictures. Very exposed. Very exposed pictures. --

:10:13.:10:23.

explicit. Lots of family and friends and former lovers, of which there

:10:24.:10:26.

are many, talk on camera about him. I like the fact that they are not

:10:27.:10:30.

the Reverend. Often you find people being too polite. Nobody is that

:10:31.:10:34.

polite about him. You get a real picture and it is a very ambitious,

:10:35.:10:40.

hedonistic man. Edi Delhi of aids at age 40 two. Extraordinary talent. It

:10:41.:10:44.

raises all question of what is per Lord Rooker, what is art, Brazil

:10:45.:10:49.

away at the heart of this? -- he died early of Aids at the age of 42.
