Hello, there. I'm Rosamund.

0:00:070:00:09

Have you ever heard a noise that sounds quite scary at first

0:00:090:00:12

and then turns out to be something quite exciting?

0:00:120:00:16

Would you like to hear a story about a noise like that?

0:00:160:00:19

You would? That's great.

0:00:190:00:21

Well, this story is called The Big Splash

0:00:210:00:24

and it's by AH Benjamin and Jon Lycett-Smith.

0:00:240:00:28

All was quiet in the woods.

0:00:290:00:31

Hare was enjoying a nibble, not far from his house,

0:00:320:00:36

when... Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp!

0:00:360:00:41

-The ground shook and shuddered.

-RUMBLE

0:00:410:00:44

Trees trembled, rocks rattled.

0:00:440:00:47

It was a terrible noise!

0:00:470:00:49

"It's Shaggybody!" gasped Hare, his long ears quivering nervously.

0:00:490:00:55

He didn't even bother to hide and he sprinted off.

0:00:550:00:59

Meanwhile, down by the river,

0:00:590:01:02

Beaver was admiring the new dam he'd just built, when...

0:01:020:01:06

Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp!

0:01:060:01:10

-The ground shook and shuddered.

-RUMBLE

0:01:100:01:13

Trees trembled, rocks rattled.

0:01:130:01:17

It was a terrible noise!

0:01:170:01:20

"It's B-B-B-Boulderhead!" stammered Beaver,

0:01:200:01:23

teeth chattering ten to the dozen.

0:01:230:01:25

He was off in a flash, his flat tail bobbing up and down.

0:01:250:01:30

A little further away, Skunk was frolicking in a flower field

0:01:300:01:34

to freshen herself up, when...

0:01:340:01:36

Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp!

0:01:360:01:40

-The ground shook and shuddered.

-RUMBLE

0:01:400:01:43

Trees trembled, rocks rattled.

0:01:430:01:46

It was a terrible noise!

0:01:460:01:48

"It's R-R-R-Redhorns!" spluttered Skunk, shaking like a leaf.

0:01:480:01:53

Scattering flowers left and right,

0:01:530:01:56

she scampered off as fast as she could.

0:01:560:01:59

Deeper in the woods, Raccoon was practising

0:01:590:02:02

hanging upside down from his favourite tree, when...

0:02:020:02:06

Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp!

0:02:060:02:08

-The ground shook and shuddered.

-RUMBLE

0:02:080:02:11

Trees trembled, rocks rattled.

0:02:110:02:14

It was a terrible noise!

0:02:140:02:16

"It's Fire-Nostrils!" wailed Raccoon,

0:02:160:02:21

falling from the tree with surprise - bomp -

0:02:210:02:24

but he quickly scrambled back to his feet and ran like mad.

0:02:240:02:29

Not too far away,

0:02:290:02:31

Fox was busy storing food in his secret hideout, when...

0:02:310:02:36

Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp!

0:02:360:02:40

The ground shook and shuddered.

0:02:400:02:42

-Trees trembled, rocks rattled.

-RUMBLE

0:02:420:02:45

It was a terrible noise!

0:02:450:02:47

"It's Thunderhooves!" cried Fox, frozen to the spot.

0:02:470:02:53

But not for long. Forgetting his precious food,

0:02:530:02:56

he bolted off.

0:02:560:02:58

Soon, Hare, Beaver, Skunk, Raccoon and Fox

0:02:580:03:02

were running together.

0:03:020:03:04

Suddenly, they came to a dead end.

0:03:040:03:07

"What do we do now?" they shouted, panicking.

0:03:080:03:12

It was too late to turn back.

0:03:120:03:14

Meanwhile, the noise grew louder and more terrible.

0:03:140:03:20

Da-domp, da-domp, da-domp!

0:03:200:03:24

Then, from around the bend, appeared a huge, shaggy creature.

0:03:240:03:31

His head was the size of a boulder.

0:03:310:03:34

His horns were dreadfully long and sharp.

0:03:340:03:38

Steam spurted out of his nostrils like fire

0:03:380:03:42

and he pawed the ground with thunder-like hooves.

0:03:420:03:46

"Hello, everyone!" boomed Buffalo, cheerfully.

0:03:460:03:52

I thought I'd never catch up with you.

0:03:520:03:55

They all stayed quiet.

0:03:550:03:57

"Come on, let's do it!" grinned Buffalo.

0:03:570:04:02

"W-W-W-We don't want to." they all stammered.

0:04:020:04:08

"We saw you do it. It...it...it's scary!"

0:04:080:04:12

"It's all right," Buffalo reassured them. "It's fun, you'll enjoy it."

0:04:120:04:20

They all looked at each other, thinking long and hard.

0:04:200:04:24

At last, they plucked up enough courage.

0:04:250:04:29

"Oh, all right, then," they finally agreed.

0:04:290:04:34

One by one, they climbed onto Buffalo's back

0:04:340:04:38

and then, they were off, at a tremendous gallop -

0:04:380:04:42

da-domp, da-domp, da-domp!

0:04:420:04:45

Past Fox's secret hideout they zoomed.

0:04:450:04:47

Under Raccoon's favourite tree they whooshed.

0:04:470:04:51

Through Skunk's flower field they ploughed.

0:04:510:04:54

Across Beaver's new dam they thundered.

0:04:540:04:57

Over Hare's house they bounded,

0:04:570:04:59

and still they kept going.

0:04:590:05:01

"We're nearly there!" said Buffalo, at last.

0:05:010:05:05

"Hold on tight, everyone."

0:05:050:05:08

One moment, they were running on the ground

0:05:080:05:11

and the next, they were sailing through the air.

0:05:110:05:15

Then there was a big...

0:05:160:05:19

splash!

0:05:190:05:21

Shrieks of delight followed

0:05:230:05:25

as they splashed happily in the warm water of the lake.

0:05:250:05:29

"It was scary at first," they shouted excitedly,

0:05:290:05:34

"but fun afterwards!"

0:05:340:05:36

"I told you so," laughed Buffalo.

0:05:360:05:40

"Shall we do that again?"

0:05:400:05:42

"Yes, please!" they all cried.

0:05:420:05:46

I hope you enjoyed that story, which was called The Big Splash.

0:05:480:05:53

All the animals had lots of fun in the end, didn't they?

0:05:530:05:56

Now, it's time for you to pull up your duvet

0:05:560:06:00

and drift off to a woodland full of some of those animals, maybe -

0:06:000:06:04

but definitely full of starlight and dreams.

0:06:040:06:08

Night-night. Sleep well.
