At Wimbledon it's the start of men's semi-finals day!

All this week we've been examining the results of a special Newsround

survey into aspirations - our hopes and dreams

for the future - and now I've turned my attention to Hollywood.

At this year's Oscars ceremony, one of the big talking points was

British film director Steve McQueen winning a major award.

He's the first director from a black background to pick up

But he's told us he had a hard time at school, and that

suggests that black and Asian children were least likely to say

that their teachers would describe them as clever or ambitious.

I've been to meet Steve in London to find out more.

Hollywood, home of the biggest movies,

the brightest and most talented stars, and it hosts some of the

British film director Steve McQueen is one of the most popular people

Earlier this year he won an Oscar, one of the most important film

And it's the first time that someone from a black background has won

But when Steve was at school in the UK,

There was this situation where black children were not deemed

as intelligent or deemed to be able to go on to do anything

And it was because of people who believed in me, like my mother and

my father, and it was a situation where I was very determined.

In our Newsround survey, black and Asian children were less likely

than white children to feel like their teachers would describe

Steve went to school in the 1970s and thinks that not

The circle has to be broken, it's upsetting to think that it?s not.

I'm sitting here with you now and I left school nearly 30 years ago

and it's still the same rubbish that goes on.

So what does he think needs to be done to make children from

an ethnic-minority background feel they can succeed in this country?

It's about that belief, filling people's lungs with ambition

When you narrow people's possibilities then they become

narrow, when you open their possibilities they become open, and

give them the idea that things are possible, because it's the truth.

Steve is working on a new project with American President Barack Obama

aimed at helping disadvantaged children do better in school.

And it's Steve's dream to bring the project here to the UK and give

children the support that they need to have the job of their dreams.

Next, we're nearing the end of Wimbledon,

and the line-up for the women's final is set with Eugenie Bouchard

and 2011 champion Petra Kvitova ready to battle it out on Saturday.
