You're watching Newsround live, with me, Leah. | :00:10. | :00:14.
First, the strongest hurricane to hit the Caribbean in nearly | :00:15. | :00:17.
ten years has battered the country of Haiti. | :00:18. | :00:19.
Hurricane Matthew brought winds of 145 miles per hour and heavy | :00:20. | :00:22.
rain, leading to floods and worries of mudslides. | :00:23. | :00:26.
Roads have been blocked and homes have been destroyed, | :00:27. | :00:28.
with thousands of people living in shelters. | :00:29. | :00:30.
Haiti is one of the world's poorest countries, and is still recovering | :00:31. | :00:36.
from a huge earthquake six years ago. | :00:37. | :00:38.
Hurricane Matthew could drop as much as three feet of rain and we are | :00:39. | :00:51.
seeing evidence of Flash flooding already. The conditions here are | :00:52. | :00:57.
absolutely atrocious. To step outside is to become drenched in | :00:58. | :00:58.
seconds. It's the last day of the biggest | :00:59. | :00:59.
ever meeting of the world's countries, in South Africa, | :01:00. | :01:02.
to talk about how to better protect Thousands of them are being | :01:03. | :01:05.
illegally killed every year Jenny has been to meet some people | :01:06. | :01:08.
who protect these Elephants, eating, playing, is safe. | :01:09. | :01:26.
This is the environment experts say they need, space to move away from | :01:27. | :01:33.
humans who can be dangerous to them in many ways. These beautiful | :01:34. | :01:37.
elephants were not so easy to find. I have come to the north-east of | :01:38. | :01:42.
South Africa, far away from the big cities and home to the famous Kruger | :01:43. | :01:47.
National Park. We are setting off this morning for a game of hide and | :01:48. | :01:51.
seek with a safari guide and a car and we have to be very patient, | :01:52. | :01:56.
which I am finding quite difficult. It is a massive area where South | :01:57. | :01:59.
Africa's wild animals can live as they have always. But strangely no | :02:00. | :02:10.
sign of the one creature we had come looking for. We are back at the camp | :02:11. | :02:14.
now and we have been out all day long and we have seen loads of | :02:15. | :02:20.
animals, giraffes, lions, Buffalo, warthog, even crocodiles, but no | :02:21. | :02:27.
elephants. But the next morning... We found them, finally, hurray! I | :02:28. | :02:32.
can't believe it! Getting so close to incredible elephants like this is | :02:33. | :02:38.
one of the most important ways South Africa believes it can protect them. | :02:39. | :02:42.
It gives people a thrill and helps them really understand how nature | :02:43. | :02:50.
needs elephants. For me, personally, elephants play a big role in the | :02:51. | :02:54.
ecosystem, especially clearing thick bush and as they walk with their big | :02:55. | :02:58.
bodies they clear pathways and make the Bush more open. It is a really | :02:59. | :03:03.
good example where you can see elephants the barking tree and you | :03:04. | :03:06.
can see a beautiful task market and how they use the tasks to take off | :03:07. | :03:10.
the bar. This will fall down eventually and create a whole new | :03:11. | :03:13.
ecosystem for a lot of other animals. One of the ways people hope | :03:14. | :03:18.
to stop the illegal hunting and killing of elephants is to catch the | :03:19. | :03:24.
people doing it, poachers. These are super sniffing dogs. They definitely | :03:25. | :03:29.
are not pets. They are trained to snaffle out trouble and catch | :03:30. | :03:33.
poachers. Once they are experts these dogs will be set out on patrol | :03:34. | :03:39.
to protect animals in the wild or find stolen ivory. The poaching | :03:40. | :03:43.
problem in Africa as a whole is huge. It is all over Africa and | :03:44. | :03:47.
elephant populations are suffering big time but the use of these | :03:48. | :03:52.
working canines, working dogs, the poachers know we can track them and | :03:53. | :03:55.
we will indicate the presence of them at night. They can't hide away | :03:56. | :04:00.
from us. Without anti-poaching efforts in Africa we will lose all | :04:01. | :04:07.
of our wildlife, never mind just the elephant which is getting hammered | :04:08. | :04:10.
now, but we will lose everything. Anti-poachers and Rangers together | :04:11. | :04:15.
hope to stop the crisis and keep these awesome creatures around for | :04:16. | :04:16.
generations to come. And finally, in sport, | :04:17. | :04:19.
England captain Wayne Rooney has been speaking to the media | :04:20. | :04:21.
at a press conference ahead of the World Cup qualifiers | :04:22. | :04:24.
against Malta and Slovenia. Rooney will remain captain | :04:25. | :04:26.
after Sam Allardyce's dismissal last week, | :04:27. | :04:29.
while temporary manager And Rooney is a big fan | :04:30. | :04:30.
of his new boss. Again I think he has done a very | :04:31. | :04:43.
good job with the under 21 is and he has an opportunity now to show what | :04:44. | :04:47.
he can do at the senior level and we have to buy into his ways and try | :04:48. | :04:51.
and take his ideas on board. | :04:52. | :04:53. |
