Good afternoon and welcome to Newsround with me, Naz.

:00:11.:00:12.

Today is the last day of the biggest ever meeting of the world's

:00:13.:00:15.

countries to talk about how to better protect wildlife,

:00:16.:00:18.

Jenny is in South Africa and sent us this.

:00:19.:00:23.

There has been a lot of attention on this big meeting

:00:24.:00:27.

to protect elephants, and that's because each

:00:28.:00:30.

year thousands of them are being illegally killed

:00:31.:00:32.

I went to meet some of the people trying to protect them and to see

:00:33.:00:39.

these incredible creatures for myself.

:00:40.:00:45.

This is the environment experts say they need,

:00:46.:00:53.

space to roam away from humans, who can be dangerous

:00:54.:00:57.

These beautiful elephants were not so easy to find.

:00:58.:01:04.

I have come to the north-east of South Africa, far away

:01:05.:01:07.

from the big cities and home to the famous Kruger National Park.

:01:08.:01:12.

We are setting off this morning for a game of hide-and-seek

:01:13.:01:14.

with a safari guide and a car and we have to be very patient,

:01:15.:01:19.

It is a massive area where South Africa's wild animals

:01:20.:01:25.

But strangely no sign of the one creature we had come looking for.

:01:26.:01:38.

We are back at the camp now and we have been out all day long

:01:39.:01:42.

and we have seen loads of animals, giraffes, lions, buffalo, warthog,

:01:43.:01:45.

Getting so close to incredible elephants like this is one

:01:46.:02:02.

of the most important ways South Africa believes

:02:03.:02:04.

It gives people a thrill and helps them really understand how

:02:05.:02:09.

For me, personally, elephants play a big role in the ecosystem,

:02:10.:02:17.

As they walk, with their big bodies, they clear pathways and make

:02:18.:02:23.

It is a really good example where you can see elephants

:02:24.:02:28.

de-barking a tree and you can see a beautiful tusk mark,

:02:29.:02:32.

and how they use the tusks to take off the bark.

:02:33.:02:35.

This will fall down eventually and create a whole new ecosystem

:02:36.:02:38.

One of the ways people hope to stop the illegal hunting and killing

:02:39.:02:44.

of elephants is to catch the people doing it, poachers.

:02:45.:02:49.

They are trained to snaffle out trouble and catch poachers.

:02:50.:02:58.

Once they are experts these dogs will be sent out on patrol

:02:59.:03:01.

to protect animals in the wild or find stolen ivory.

:03:02.:03:07.

The poaching problem in Africa as a whole is huge.

:03:08.:03:09.

It is all over Africa and elephant populations are suffering

:03:10.:03:13.

big time but the use of these working canines,

:03:14.:03:15.

working dogs, the poachers know we can track them

:03:16.:03:18.

and we will indicate the presence of them at night.

:03:19.:03:22.

Without anti-poaching efforts in Africa we will lose

:03:23.:03:27.

all of our wildlife, never mind just the elephant

:03:28.:03:29.

which is getting hammered now, but we will lose everything.

:03:30.:03:34.

Anti-poachers and rangers together hope to stop the crisis and keep

:03:35.:03:38.

these awesome creatures around for generations to come.

:03:39.:03:48.

Today is the last day of this big meeting here in Johannesburg.

:03:49.:03:51.

Everyone wants to help protect elephants but they can't always

:03:52.:03:54.

One suggestion, to put all elephants in the top group

:03:55.:04:00.

of protected animals, didn't happen as most

:04:01.:04:02.

countries didn't think that was the right idea.

:04:03.:04:05.

But one big announcement was a call for a ban on the buying

:04:06.:04:08.

and selling of all ivory, not just between countries

:04:09.:04:11.

Countries don't have to obey that, but elephant charities are really

:04:12.:04:17.

pleased this has happened, so some progress has been made

:04:18.:04:20.

but getting everyone to agree on the best way to save elephants

:04:21.:04:23.

and to stop poaching definitely isn't easy.

:04:24.:04:27.

Make sure you go online for our guide on everything

:04:28.:04:30.

about elephants and to see a baby elephant.

:04:31.:04:32.

So, from everyone here in Johannesburg, goodbye.

:04:33.:04:42.

Thanks, Jenny. Also on the website, you can check out the other stories,

:04:43.:04:48.

including the latest on hurricane Matthew in the Caribbean, and more

:04:49.:04:53.

on this massive dinosaur footprint found in the Gobi desert in Asia. We

:04:54.:04:58.

are back at 7:40am tomorrow. See you then. Bye-bye.
