Hi, Martin here.

0:00:120:00:14

Today is Safer Internet Day - and all day online and on TV -

0:00:140:00:17

we've been asking what you think about social media and online

0:00:170:00:20

bullying.

0:00:200:00:21

So, how safe do you feel when you're using a phone or tablet?

0:00:210:00:24

In a survey carried out for Newsround, more than one in five

0:00:240:00:27

10-12 year olds who use social media said they'd been trolled

0:00:270:00:30

or bullied online.

0:00:300:00:34

You've told us bullying is something you're really worried about.

0:00:340:00:38

Online, there are our Top Tips on what to do

0:00:380:00:41

if you're being bullied.

0:00:410:00:44

Plus loads more advice and information.

0:00:440:00:47

Leah went to meet some year sevens in Sunderland

0:00:470:00:50

to hear their experiences.

0:00:500:00:51

Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

0:00:510:00:53

Some of the world's most successful online companies.

0:00:530:00:57

So for those of you who use social networks, what experience have

0:00:570:00:59

you had on them, both good and bad?

0:00:590:01:04

I have come along to this school in the north-east of England

0:01:040:01:07

to find out.

0:01:070:01:09

Well, I use Instagram, because it is really easy to get

0:01:090:01:12

in touch with your friends.

0:01:120:01:15

I have YouTube to just research videos and watch videos and stuff.

0:01:150:01:20

The main ones I like are Instagram, Facebook and things like that.

0:01:200:01:25

I signed up to Facebook because I wanted to talk

0:01:250:01:27

to my friends outside of school if I couldn't see them in person.

0:01:270:01:30

I looked at Instagram because it is kind of what everyone does.

0:01:300:01:36

A Newsround survey found a massive 78% of 10-to-12-year-olds

0:01:360:01:40

have a social media account, despite rules saying you have to be

0:01:400:01:43

13 or over to sign up.

0:01:430:01:49

Even though the survey found more than 70% of you are happy

0:01:490:01:52

using social networking sites, it also found that many of you don't

0:01:520:01:55

always have a great time.

0:01:550:02:00

More than one in five 10-to-12-year-olds with a social

0:02:000:02:02

media account said they had been bullied or trolled online.

0:02:020:02:08

I have experienced it, but it has been in private messages

0:02:080:02:11

and I showed my mum.

0:02:110:02:15

I said I was leaving it.

0:02:150:02:17

One of my friends has been quite badly bullied on a social network

0:02:170:02:20

and it affected her quite bad, she has never been on it since.

0:02:200:02:23

One of my friends had a YouTube account and I looked on the comments

0:02:230:02:27

and I saw swearing, abusive language.

0:02:270:02:33

I have never really seen any bullying going on and I have

0:02:330:02:36

never been bullied.

0:02:360:02:38

I haven't seen anyone but I know it can happen and it can be really

0:02:380:02:42

bad, it can really hurt people.

0:02:420:02:46

Are the social networks doing enough themselves to prevent bullying

0:02:460:02:48

on their sites?

0:02:480:02:51

They all have places where you can report bullying.

0:02:510:02:53

But more than a third of you said the companies don't take

0:02:530:02:56

bullying seriously enough.

0:02:560:03:00

So what do the social media companies have to say?

0:03:010:03:05

Snapchat wouldn't do an interview nor would Instagram,

0:03:050:03:08

But they did tell us "Keeping the community safe on Instagram

0:03:080:03:11

is our number one priority and we spend a lot of time

0:03:110:03:14

thinking about it".

0:03:140:03:16

YouTube also wouldn't talk but stressed it's for 13s and over.

0:03:160:03:18

And Facebook agreed to do an interview as long as we didn't

0:03:180:03:21

ask them about under 13s, which of course

0:03:210:03:23

we wouldn't agree to.

0:03:230:03:28

Well, we've been asking you all day for your ideas about how to make

0:03:280:03:31

the online world a safer and friendlier place.

0:03:310:03:34

Lots of you have got in touch with your suggestions.

0:03:340:03:36

Sonia from Bristol says tell your parents if you're

0:03:360:03:38

being bullied because if someone types something bad,

0:03:380:03:40

they will sort it out.

0:03:400:03:43

Jess from Bournemouth would look closer at the comments

0:03:430:03:46

on her friends' pictures to make sure no-one is being mean.

0:03:460:03:48

Great advice, guys, thanks.

0:03:480:03:52

I went out to see what advice children in Manchester can give.

0:03:520:03:57

If I was giving advice to someone that had just started social media,

0:03:570:04:00

I would say to put it on private.

0:04:000:04:02

My advice is to not let bullies get you down,

0:04:020:04:06

tell the parent, and if it is that bad tell the police.

0:04:060:04:10

I think that social media sites could make the privacy better

0:04:100:04:13

by including a tutorial on how to put privacy through.

0:04:130:04:17

Don't add people you don't know.

0:04:170:04:20

I'm quite open with my mum and dad about everything I do

0:04:200:04:23

on social networking sites.

0:04:230:04:25

I tell them everything that's going on and if there's ever any

0:04:250:04:28

problems I go to them straight away and they can help me

0:04:280:04:35

help me with everything.

0:04:350:04:39

My advice would to just be nice to people

0:04:390:04:41

because you wouldn't want that happening to you and it's not nice

0:04:410:04:44

doing hurtful things.

0:04:440:04:46

And go online to see Tim Peake's amazing lightning shots

0:04:460:04:48

from the International Space Station.

0:04:480:04:51

Ricky's back tomorrow, so don't miss Newsround.
