In a survey carried out for Newsround, 37%

of 10-12-year-olds with a social media account said they'd made

friends online that they've NOT met in person.

You've told us that you hear in school that you should never

friend strangers online, so why are many children

Leah's been to ask some of you about your experiences.

I was just messaging my friends and a notification popped up.

It was this random person requesting to follow us.

I declined it and so they kept trying to follow us over and over

Any friends that do approach us, I do say yes because I know

I only follow people that I like, celebrity wise, and my friends

I'm all right if it's friends from friends...

Have you ever been approached by someone you completely don't know?

If it's someone that I'm not actually sure about,

I look at their account to see if I actually know this person.

If I do get messages off random people, I know for a fact that I'd

stop it, report it and then I know it won't happen again.

What are your tips for staying safe online so you can enjoy it?

Don't friend random people because it's dangerous.

It's fun to make new friends online, but what do you do to make sure

One of the key things is not to share personal details. Things like

your address, where you go to school. It's better to keep those to

yourself. And not friending people you don't know in real life. There

are different ways to make sure you definitely know that person and if

you don't know them, ignore their request. If they keep trying, block

them. What else should people think

about when they post things online? I always check what I'm going to

post and always think about it before I click send just make sure I

would be happy for people to see it. You spend a lot of time on the

Internet. Have you ever had people being mean to you all saying nasty

things? I have and it doesn't make you feel very good. The best thing

to do is just ignore those comments. Most of the time the people who say

nasty things don't mean it, they just want a reaction. If you don't

give a reaction you don't win. Is it important to talk about these

things? Absolutely. The more we talk about it the more we know what's

safe and what is the best thing to do.
