This is Newsround, coming to you live from CBBC HQ.

:00:00.:00:00.

On the way: Find out why Devon's top dog.

:00:07.:00:13.

And why temperature is so important to these baby turtles.

:00:14.:00:27.

Today's a big day for space exploration, as a rocket will blast

:00:28.:00:31.

off to try to find out more about the Red Planet,

:00:32.:00:34.

Here's Leah with more on this mission.

:00:35.:00:41.

The Trace Gas Orbiter will blast off from Kazakhstan as the first

:00:42.:00:44.

of a two-part mission that will study the Mars atmosphere.

:00:45.:00:48.

Its mission is to search for signs of life and test

:00:49.:00:51.

equipment needed for a second flight, due to leave Earth in 2018.

:00:52.:00:55.

The main thing the Orbiter will be looking for is methane gas.

:00:56.:00:58.

It is this gas that could show if there

:00:59.:01:02.

It's equipped with tools to sniff out

:01:03.:01:08.

gases from the atmosphere, find water ice, and a camera

:01:09.:01:11.

It also carries a small vehicle, called

:01:12.:01:17.

Schiaparelli, that will land on the planet.

:01:18.:01:18.

This vehicle will enter the atmosphere at over 15,000 mph,

:01:19.:01:21.

a heat shield, parachute and thrusters will help to slow it

:01:22.:01:24.

Schiaparelli is battery powered so will only last a few days

:01:25.:01:34.

on the surface, but it is hoped its weather sensors and camera

:01:35.:01:37.

will be able to get a snapshot of the Martian environment.

:01:38.:01:39.

Scientists think the information sent back may

:01:40.:01:41.

be able to tell us if there was ever life on Mars.

:01:42.:01:46.

Joining me on the sofa now is Professor Tim O'Brien -

:01:47.:01:49.

Tim, that blows my mind just seeing it, but how big is this mission? It

:01:50.:02:06.

is important. Any mission to Mars is important. This is about finding if

:02:07.:02:10.

there's any life on Mars, which is important. It'll be sniffing out

:02:11.:02:18.

methane? Methane on the earth is produced by biological organisms, by

:02:19.:02:25.

life. The question is, whether on Mars the methane BC, is that

:02:26.:02:33.

produced by Blyth? The on Mars? -- microbes. This mission is taken off

:02:34.:02:40.

at 9:30am. How long will it take to reach Mars? The rest of the day, we

:02:41.:02:47.

will be on tenterhooks to see if it reaches the speed it needs to reach

:02:48.:02:52.

Mars. We will find out tonight. It is seven months before it gets

:02:53.:02:59.

there. Will we soon put people on Mars? Every mission to Mars, we

:03:00.:03:03.

learn something new. It will help for people going there. It was only

:03:04.:03:09.

20 or 30 years before we see people walking on the surface. Thank you

:03:10.:03:10.

for coming in. Can you imagine if temperature

:03:11.:03:13.

decided whether you were born a girl Well, that's what happens

:03:14.:03:16.

with turtles. Experts are now worried that rising

:03:17.:03:19.

temperatures could cause problems This team of scientists

:03:20.:03:22.

have crossed deserts, seas and beaches to dig

:03:23.:03:36.

for buried treasure. They've come to the Lacapede Islands

:03:37.:03:38.

in the Kimberley, Western Australia, to find

:03:39.:03:42.

out more about turtles and how climate change

:03:43.:03:43.

will affect their future. We go out into the Kimberley and

:03:44.:03:45.

collect eggs from nesting females. We then bring those eggs back

:03:46.:03:48.

to incubate them at constant temperatures, to find out the switch

:03:49.:03:51.

point where they switch At certain temperatures,

:03:52.:03:53.

these eggs switch from having males For humans and other mammals,

:03:54.:03:58.

whether you are born a boy or a girl is decided

:03:59.:04:02.

by what genes you have. But for some reptiles,

:04:03.:04:04.

like these little turtles, it is actually caused by how hot

:04:05.:04:07.

or how cold the egg gets. For many turtles, if the sand

:04:08.:04:11.

is warmer than 29 degrees, there's a good chance

:04:12.:04:15.

they will be girls. If it is any cooler,

:04:16.:04:18.

it will probably be boys. The problem is, temperatures

:04:19.:04:21.

around the world are going up, and that means too many

:04:22.:04:23.

girl turtles will be hatching. If it keeps getting

:04:24.:04:28.

warmer, there will be more females being produced,

:04:29.:04:32.

and over time, the males will keep dying at a greater

:04:33.:04:34.

rate than they are So it is what we call

:04:35.:04:36.

demographic collapse. Scientists don't believe

:04:37.:04:39.

a population crash will happen right away, but they are concerned that

:04:40.:04:41.

if we don't prepare for it, I don't think turtle populations

:04:42.:04:45.

are at risk of becoming extinct any time soon, they live for a long

:04:46.:04:50.

time, for potentially 120 years females can still be breeding,

:04:51.:04:54.

so the changes are going to be slow, but the point here is that climate

:04:55.:04:59.

change is very rapid compared to what turtles have

:05:00.:05:02.

experienced in the past. Finding a solution is

:05:03.:05:03.

vital, so with research like this, hopefully more of these

:05:04.:05:05.

little hatchlings can look forward to a happy future, even if they do

:05:06.:05:08.

have a few obstacles along the way. A white westie dog called Devon has

:05:09.:05:15.

won the Crufts dog competition. Devon was named Best In Show

:05:16.:05:28.

at the annual dog show It's the first time his breed,

:05:29.:05:32.

a West Highland terrier, has won the top prize at Crufts

:05:33.:05:37.

in the past 26 years. I bet Hacker and Dodge

:05:38.:05:45.

are really jealous. That's all from me,

:05:46.:05:52.

Newsround's back right
