Plans for flat demolitions dropped from the Glasgow Games. And, did

First to Ukraine, where the latest developments have made an already

difficult problem even worse. Over the weekend, pro-Russian

demonstrators took over government buildings in the east of the

country. But how did we get to this point?

Back in November many people occupied the centre of the capital

of Ukraine, Kiev. They were unhappy with moves to make the country

closer to Russia than to Europe. Protests broke out and more than 100

people lost their lives and many more were injured. In February,

Ukraine's President, Viktor Yanukovych, who was supported by

Russia, left the country. In March, Russia took over an area of Ukraine

known as Crimea - a place where many Russians live. Now people are

worried the same thing might be happening in Eastern Ukraine. Here's

Ricky with the latest. Pro-Russian protesters raiding a

police station in eastern Ukraine. These demonstrators try to get into

Kharkiv City Hall. In other areas, armed groups have already seized

Government buildings. Is Russia behind this? Countries like America

think so. They think Russian troops are secretly in charge and are

leading the protests to stir up trouble and make Ukraine more weak.

But what would Russia gain from doing this? There's a mix of people

here. Some people speaking in Ukrainian, other people speaking in

Russian. Some of them say they want to be Ukrainian. They cheer for the

Ukrainian football team when it plays. Other people say that they

like Russia, they have family across the border and they want to be

protected by their neighbour. Russia says they have nothing to do with

the takeover but some people don't believe them. Here's the problem. No

one can go up to those troops and look at their name tags because they

haven't got any. They haven't got any badges which identify

themselves. A lot of people think that the only possible organisation

which could do it is the Russian organisation. Today, the British

Prime Minister, David Cameron, along with other world leaders called for

calm in the region. But there's no sign of that happening and the

situation remains extremely tense. You can find out more about what's

Now to Glasgow where a plan to demolish five empty tower blocks

during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games have been

dropped. It's an idea that left thousands of people furious but many

are calling this a victory for people power as Martin reports.

Two years ago, the first of the Red Road tower blocks were demolished.

Now six remain and they're all empty except for one. They have been an

iconic part of Glasgow's skyline for the past 50 years but they've had

their day. There had been plans to demolish five of them live during

the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. Organisers wanted to show

how much Glasgow is changing but last night they announced they had

changed their minds because of safety reasons. The plans had

divided people from the beginning. An online petition calling to stop

the plans got more than 17,000 signatures, claiming it was

disrespectful to people living in the area. The five towers are still

being brought down but at another time.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have paid their respects to the 185

people who lost their lives during two devastating earthquakes in

Christchurch three years ago. In the latest stage of their tour of New

Zealand Prince William praised how well the people there had recovered

since the disaster. William and Kate also had time for a

quick game of cricket. The Duchess, playing in high heels, wasn't too

impressed when her husband made this wild bowl.
