It's Friday, you're with Newsround, and BBC One just got even better. | :00:20. | :00:25.
Yep, you've got Leah and Ricky here tonight, dream-team material. | :00:25. | :00:31.
Coming up, we meet the little girl making big waves. And calls for | :00:31. | :00:34.
Hamilton and Button to pull out of the Grand Prix in Bahrain as the | :00:34. | :00:40.
trouble increases. First to some good news in the fight against | :00:40. | :00:43.
famine and drought in Africa. We've all got used to seeing these | :00:44. | :00:47.
sorts of images over the years as the continent battles with the | :00:47. | :00:48.
problems caused by a lack of fresh water. | :00:49. | :00:51.
But today scientists have announced an exciting new discovery, as I've | :00:51. | :00:55.
been finding out. The devastating effects of drought | :00:55. | :01:02.
and famine, something we're all used to seeing in Africa. The lack | :01:02. | :01:05.
of clean drinking water has been a problem there for decades, and it's | :01:05. | :01:10.
still effecting tens of millions of lives. It's a particular problem | :01:10. | :01:14.
right now for the central African country of Niger. The people there | :01:14. | :01:17.
face severe famine, because they lacked the water to grow enough | :01:17. | :01:22.
food. Water is vital to survival, and in many parts of Africa you | :01:22. | :01:28.
can't just turn on the tap to get it. But it turns out there might be | :01:28. | :01:32.
a solution deep under the ground. Up until recently, little was known | :01:32. | :01:35.
about what lies beneath Africa's soil, but research led by British | :01:35. | :01:39.
scientists has shown that there are huge water reservoirs underneath | :01:39. | :01:49.
:01:49. | :01:49. | ||
How work shows that there is potentially enough groundwater | :01:49. | :01:53.
across Africa to support small- scale drinking water supplies for | :01:53. | :02:01.
millions of people with careful exploration. The findings come on | :02:01. | :02:04.
the same day the UN announced their global targets for supplying clean | :02:04. | :02:07.
drinking water around the world are not being met. This could radically | :02:07. | :02:10.
change all that. The question is how to get to the water to the | :02:10. | :02:17.
places that need it most. Groundwater will be within 50 | :02:17. | :02:21.
metres of the surface, so it can be accessed by drilling down into the | :02:21. | :02:26.
ground and fitting a hand pump on to the top of the bore holes, which | :02:26. | :02:33.
people can pump themselves to bring water to the surface. The results | :02:33. | :02:36.
of the study could potentially mean fresh drinking water for over 300 | :02:36. | :02:39.
million people, so that could mean a solution to one of Africa's | :02:39. | :02:41.
biggest problems could lie just beneath their feet. | :02:41. | :02:44.
Next to the latest from Bahrain, where there's been calls for top | :02:44. | :02:47.
British drivers to pull out of this weekend's Formula One race. A group | :02:47. | :02:50.
of UK politicians want the race to be cancelled because of continued | :02:50. | :02:53.
violence in the country. Last night, there were tear-gas attacks on | :02:53. | :02:55.
protestors angry at the way the country is run. The government | :02:55. | :02:58.
there say everything will be OK. Here's what the racing drivers | :02:58. | :03:06.
think. At the moment, it is business as normal, we are here to | :03:06. | :03:10.
race, and I want to be part of it. It is difficult to answer, I'm here | :03:10. | :03:15.
as a racing driver, not 18 spokesman. I think we are here for | :03:15. | :03:20.
a reason, to race. We have a federation working to give safety | :03:20. | :03:25.
for everybody. I trust them. Now to computers that can recognise | :03:25. | :03:28.
our emotions. Scientists in America are working on the idea and, as Joe | :03:28. | :03:31.
has been finding, they'll be putting the gadgets to very good | :03:31. | :03:39.

could work out what mood you are in. Scientists in America are trying to | :03:47. | :03:52.
train computers to do just that. It is all done through looking at our | :03:52. | :03:55.
faces and expressions changed depending on how we are feeling, | :03:55. | :03:58.
and gradually the computer learns which expressions go with which | :03:58. | :04:07.

can really tell our emotions, but thanks to these high-tech | :04:50. | :04:53.
developments, we should one day be able to tell the world how we are | :04:53. | :05:02.
feeling by looking at the screen. Is this thing working? Come on! | :05:02. | :05:05.
Something big has been happening in Liverpool today. Three puppets on a | :05:05. | :05:09.
giant scale have been roaming the streets. It's all to mark 100 years | :05:09. | :05:19.

since the Titanic sunk, and I was The story begins here in France, | :05:28. | :05:37.
something magical has been taking shape inside this building. Actors, | :05:37. | :05:41.
acrobats and inventors are putting together a production on a titanic | :05:41. | :05:49.
scale. Inside the workshop, giant puppets have been created for a | :05:49. | :05:59.
:05:59. | :06:00. | ||
Meet the little giant. She has been brought all the way to Liverpool to | :06:00. | :06:04.
star in a three-day events to mark the 100th anniversary of the | :06:04. | :06:09.
Titanic disaster. The inspiration behind the production is a young | :06:10. | :06:13.
girl from Liverpool wrote a letter to her father, who was on board the | :06:13. | :06:19.
ship when it sank. Earlier today, the big crowds waited for the | :06:19. | :06:23.
little giant. Finally, she has made her way into a heart of Liverpool. | :06:23. | :06:28.
Thousands of people have turned up to see her. The puppet is about | :06:28. | :06:32.
nine metres in height. She is made out of wood and operated by about | :06:32. | :06:38.
30 people. It is quite an impressive sight. My mummy and | :06:38. | :06:43.
daddy thought that I look like it. What did you think of the puppet? | :06:43. | :06:49.
Yeah. These events will continue over the weekend. A quarter of a | :06:49. | :06:53.
million people are expected to watch their inaction. | :06:53. | :06:57.
That looks amazing. Now let us show you some of the world's newest | :06:57. | :07:01.
gadgets before we go. They're on show at an exhibtion in Switzerland. | :07:01. | :07:04.
Some of the gadgets on display include a robotic claw and a water | :07:05. | :07:11.
wheel. But there was also a super low-tech hands-free umbrella. Well, | :07:11. | :07:15. |
