It is Friday afternoon and you are watching newsround. We have plenty | :00:00. | :00:11.
to tell you about. I am finding out how to stay safe | :00:12. | :00:15.
around dogs. And find out why scientists are | :00:16. | :00:19.
giving praying Mantis is the glasses! | :00:20. | :00:22.
But first, the RSPCA says it's concerned about the rising number of | :00:23. | :00:24.
children in England being taken to hospital because of dog bites. The | :00:25. | :00:28.
animal charity says more should be done to teach people, particularly | :00:29. | :00:31.
young kids, how to behave around dogs. Leah has more. | :00:32. | :00:39.
Dogs can be loads of fun. They can feel like our friends, be great to | :00:40. | :00:43.
play with and can even become part of the family. But, sometimes if we | :00:44. | :00:47.
don't know what we're doing around them - things can go wrong. Over the | :00:48. | :00:52.
past five years in England, the number of people going into hospital | :00:53. | :00:56.
for dog bites and injuries has gone up. Getting a serious bite from a | :00:57. | :00:59.
dog is still really rare, but it's kids aged nine and under who are | :01:00. | :01:10.
most at risk. I was walking with my friends and the dog ran after me. | :01:11. | :01:16.
You should ask owners before you/ them. I was on my bacon and this dog | :01:17. | :01:22.
chased me around the park. The order call it back but it scared me. If | :01:23. | :01:27.
you/view. It may not be very friendly and it could make you. Many | :01:28. | :01:32.
children don't know how to react around dogs, the cab pick-up at the | :01:33. | :01:39.
dog is anxious. Think the dog is smiling when in fact it is a warning | :01:40. | :01:44.
sign that the dog is getting into attack mode. What advice would you | :01:45. | :01:50.
give to children? Do not panic. Don't make any big movements. Like | :01:51. | :01:55.
running or approach the dog. Stay still. Do not look the dog in the | :01:56. | :02:01.
eye and back off very slowly. With summer in the way more and more of | :02:02. | :02:04.
us will be out and about so it is more important that we learn how to | :02:05. | :02:07.
behave around our funny friends. Next, the UK is to get one of the | :02:08. | :02:10.
biggest, most advanced polar research ships in the world, it's | :02:11. | :02:13.
been announced today. Costing ?200 million, it'll be a major upgrade | :02:14. | :02:16.
over Britain's two current icebreakers like this one. It'll | :02:17. | :02:19.
have a helipad, onboard laboratories, and the ability to | :02:20. | :02:23.
send out submarines. But why is this so important? Is a big investment | :02:24. | :02:34.
but it is important because the polar regions are changing so fast | :02:35. | :02:38.
at that matters to all of us goes this can affect the weather, the | :02:39. | :02:43.
level of the sea, wildlife, it can create new shipping routes across | :02:44. | :02:47.
the roof of the world. To understand that you can just use the | :02:48. | :02:50.
satellite, any ships to get in there. | :02:51. | :02:52.
Next, it's looking less and less likely that anyone will be able to | :02:53. | :02:55.
climb the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, this year. An | :02:56. | :02:58.
avalanche last week killed sixteen local guides, known as Sherpas and | :02:59. | :03:01.
it's started big argument over safety on the mountain, and how much | :03:02. | :03:04.
Sherpas are paid. Now teams are starting to come down from Base | :03:05. | :03:08.
Camp, saying it's not safe to attempt to reach the summit. Having | :03:09. | :03:16.
been there and seeing the conditions myself and seeing the repeated | :03:17. | :03:21.
avalanches again and again, that is not snow but face, greasy and | :03:22. | :03:25.
speaking of her coming down. I know for certain that those conditions | :03:26. | :03:29.
are not safe. Club legend Ryan Giggs has given his | :03:30. | :03:32.
first press conference as stand-in manager of Manchester United. Giggs | :03:33. | :03:36.
is in temporary charge for the rest of the season, after David Moyes was | :03:37. | :03:39.
sacked this week. He says taking charge of the club he's supported | :03:40. | :03:43.
since he was a boy, was the "proudest moment" of his life. | :03:44. | :03:51.
I would like to just say I am very proud to be managing for the | :03:52. | :03:56.
remaining four games. The club that I supported all my life. I have been | :03:57. | :04:03.
associated with it for 2526 years so it is a proud moment for me. One | :04:04. | :04:06.
that I will enjoy. This right here is a praying mantis, | :04:07. | :04:09.
with a difference. Because this little guy is wearing the world's | :04:10. | :04:12.
smallest 3D glasses! They're the only invertebrates able to see in | :04:13. | :04:15.
three dimensions - other insects only see in 2D. So scientists at | :04:16. | :04:19.
Newcastle University are studying mantises to find out how other | :04:20. | :04:23.
creatures developed 3D vision. They hope it'll help create new robotic | :04:24. | :04:26.
technology in future. But just how do you get five millimetre glasses | :04:27. | :04:40.
onto an insect? We fix them on to deeply in Mantis | :04:41. | :04:46.
using beeswax so we melt the glasses on to the Mantis and after we are | :04:47. | :04:49.
finished with the experiment we can melt the wax and remove the glasses. | :04:50. | :04:53.
They are detachable. More on that story on the website, make sure you | :04:54. | :04:57.
check it out. We are back tomorrow. Goodbye. | :04:58. | :04:59. |
