Good afternoon, I'm Ayshah. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
On Newsround today, we're talking about some major news to do with | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
the Hillsborough Disaster of 1989. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:15
Today is a huge day for the city of Liverpool, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
and football supporters across the UK. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
It's because of a disaster that happened at a football stadium | 0:00:25 | 0:00:25
called Hillsborough in 1989. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
In a minute, we'll find out about what's been going on today. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
But first, let's look back at what happened 27 years ago. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:39
On Saturday the 15th of April, 1989, Liverpool fans arrived | 0:00:39 | 0:00:43
at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium to watch the FA Cup semi-final. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:49
Too many fans were let into the stadium, and many of them | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
got caught up in a crush. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:56
96 people died and hundreds more were injured. | 0:00:56 | 0:01:01
Because of this disaster, football stadiums have changed. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
Fans all have seats and there are no longer metal fences | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
between the pitch and the stands. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:12
This has made football grounds much safer, so a disaster like this | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
could never happen again. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Since the disaster, families of the victims have been | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
searching for answers to what happened at Hillsborough. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
For the past two years, an inquest has been | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
trying to find the truth. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
And today, the decisions have been made. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:33
The BBC's Judith Moritz was at the inquest | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
and sent this report for Newsround. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
An inquest is where you find out how and why somebody died. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
And at Hillsborough, very sadly, 96 people died. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
So there's a lot to find out and, also, it happened nearly 30 years | 0:01:43 | 0:01:48
ago - it's taken a really long time to get the answers. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:53
Well, today, it was decided that the Liverpool fans who died, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
they died because the policeman who was in charge of | 0:01:56 | 0:02:02
the game they were at made a really big mistake. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
He allowed too many people to go inside the football ground, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
and there was a crush. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
Well, the families of the people who died say they are really pleased | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
to find out at last what's happened, but they also say they really | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
miss their relatives very much. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
And if you go to Newsround online, you can find our full guide | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
on the Hillsborough Disaster, which includes what happened | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
in 1989, why it's still important today, and more | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
about today's decisions. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
And there's also advice on what you should do | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
if anything in the news upsets you. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
To find out more about why today's decision does matter so much, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:46
Ricky has been to a school in Merseyside to talk to | 0:02:46 | 0:02:51
students there about Hillsborough. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
I've grown up with the story. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
It's always been something that's bothered us all. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
It's always been fresh in our mind. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
I think it definitely should be talked about, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
it should be remembered, because it was one of | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
the most significant events in football history. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
Because a lot of them were young, and they had their lives ahead | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
of them, and it was really unfair that their lives were just cut short | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
just because they went to a football game. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
My dad was actually at the match in 1989 and he was actually | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
evacuated out of the ground as it was happening, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
and he actually knew what went on. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
I've been to the Memorial at Anfield every year | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
for as long as I can remember. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
My mum takes me, and the atmosphere there is something that I can't | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
describe, because it's so... | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29
It's so different and it's so heartbreaking. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
It affected everyone. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
There was 96 people with families and most of them had nieces, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
nephews, sons and daughters that they'll never get to meet. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:41
The Hillsborough Disaster may have happened 27 years ago, but people | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
are still talking about it today, especially in and around Liverpool. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
One of the boys who died at the football match in 1989 | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
came to this school. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
Kevin was just 15 years old and there is a memorial | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
here to remember him. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
Well, I've come here to find out what the kids here think | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
about today's decision. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:04
I think it's the result that everybody wanted to hear. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
We spent so long waiting for a result, and we finally | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
got it, and it's hopefully what everybody wanted. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
Definitely, there will be a big relief in Liverpool, | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
because it kind of brings everyone in Liverpool together as a community | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
and knowing that such a good outcome has came from it, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
that's kind of the outcome everyone's hoped for and everyone's | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
wanted justice for so long, | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
so everyone will be thrilled with it. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
Since I've been growing up, Hillsborough's always been | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
a question over what happened, and I think today is really | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
going to be a bit of a relief to people that they actually know | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
really what actually happened, rather than it being a question | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
of how did it happen, why and who was responsible? | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
I think it's important to remember it, so it won't happen again, | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
and it is a lesson, so that mistakes can't be repeated, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:56
so I think it's appropriate that it is still in the news, | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
but some of the families can finally find peace | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
now that they have justice. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
They will feel that... | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
They will feel relieved and I reckon they will be able to take a step | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
forward, but they will never be truly able to forget those | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
that they have lost. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
Now that they've got the result that they were unlawfully killed, | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
then they can mourn the dead and grieve the way that they should | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
have been able to do 27 years ago. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
Thanks, Ricky, for that report. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
That's all from the team today. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29
We're back on TV tomorrow morning. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
Hope you have a good evening. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:38
I'll | 0:05:38 | 0:05:38 | |
I'll see | 0:05:38 | 0:05:38
I'll see you | 0:05:38 | 0:05:38
I'll see you soon, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:38
I'll see you soon, goodbye. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:39 |
