Good morning, I'm Jenny, live with all the news | :00:00. | :00:00.
Coming up - we'll be speaking to one young carer about her life. | :00:00. | :00:12.
And the paraglider soaring beneath Norway's Northern Lights. | :00:13. | :00:25.
Did you know that around the country right now, | :00:26. | :00:27.
there are thousands of children like you caring | :00:28. | :00:29.
They are called young carers and take on a lot of the jobs around | :00:30. | :00:33.
They do this because their mum or dad is not well enough to do | :00:34. | :00:39.
the jobs themselves - sometimes because they have problems | :00:40. | :00:41.
Charlotte is a young carer who looks after her mum. | :00:42. | :00:44.
One of the first elements I remember about caring for my mum | :00:45. | :00:52.
was that she never really used to be able to do things that other | :00:53. | :00:55.
Every so often, things would get way too much for her and she would just | :00:56. | :01:00.
have to go and lie down or withdraw herself from situations. | :01:01. | :01:03.
And, as a kid, that would make me feel really bad. | :01:04. | :01:06.
So, I would try and make her feel happy or I would try and do things | :01:07. | :01:10.
I would see other mums lifting up their kids and going running | :01:11. | :01:17.
with them and stuff and I would be like, | :01:18. | :01:19.
"Well, why can't mum do that for me?" | :01:20. | :01:23.
It was an absence of this kind of fun loving mum that I used | :01:24. | :01:26.
I don't blame her for that but I knew something wasn't right. | :01:27. | :01:32.
A certain teacher that really helped me realise that | :01:33. | :01:34.
something really was wrong, she was one of the first | :01:35. | :01:37.
people I ever told. And I got the support I needed. | :01:38. | :01:39.
I just broke down in tears. I wasn't sad... | :01:40. | :01:45.
It was just kind of the realisation that that was what's wrong. | :01:46. | :01:49.
And at that point there was just kind of an, | :01:50. | :01:51.
"Oh, my God! THAT'S what's wrong!" And she nodded at me. | :01:52. | :01:56.
And she said, "You know what? That's OK and we're going | :01:57. | :01:59.
It sounds really cliched but at that moment, I really didn't feel | :02:00. | :02:04.
like I was completely alone any more. | :02:05. | :02:06.
There is a lot of experiences to be had and some of them are going to be | :02:07. | :02:10.
That's OK because being a young carer most definitely | :02:11. | :02:13.
Because I wouldn't be half as resilient if I hadn't | :02:14. | :02:17.
I know how to deal with the disappointments | :02:18. | :02:21.
and the anxieties because I've seen my mum got through it for one, | :02:22. | :02:26.
and I've had to go through it with her. | :02:27. | :02:31.
She's joined by Michelle Smith, from the Carers Trust Fylde Coast, | :02:32. | :02:35.
Thanks for sharing your story with us. | :02:36. | :02:43.
Fill the topic there is a ignorance around and it needs to be, a lot of | :02:44. | :02:56.
people don't understand. This is something that should be shared | :02:57. | :02:59.
because it happens in everyday life and it goes on behind closed to | :03:00. | :03:04.
this, whether you know it or not and people need to be educated about it | :03:05. | :03:05.
because it is going on around you. Have you had any problems | :03:06. | :03:07.
in the past by being a young carer? I have had bullying, people that | :03:08. | :03:16.
turn ignorance into, based don't how to react and they are just plain | :03:17. | :03:21.
mean and just take it out on me, like misdirected anger and it is | :03:22. | :03:29.
horrible. A lot of children have to deal with what Charlotte has been | :03:30. | :03:36.
through. That's right. Young people are carrying out additional tasks | :03:37. | :03:42.
every day and often they are missing out on an awful lot of things that | :03:43. | :03:48.
other children are doing. What sort of problems today face? The Carers | :03:49. | :03:53.
Trust did research and the found out that one third of all carers are | :03:54. | :03:58.
caring for a parent with mental health problems. Typically, some of | :03:59. | :04:01.
our young carers will say that money is very sad or does not want to go | :04:02. | :04:06.
out the house and that impact on young people, spending a lot of time | :04:07. | :04:10.
worrying and potentially affecting their mental health. | :04:11. | :04:11.
What would you say to people watching right now | :04:12. | :04:14.
who are going through what you went through? | :04:15. | :04:15.
I can only say there is only good from telling people. I found it hard | :04:16. | :04:29.
to trust people after I first told people but opening up to people is | :04:30. | :04:33.
one of the best things you can do. It is hard and a big wall to break | :04:34. | :04:38.
down but once you have done it, there are online forums and safe | :04:39. | :04:41.
communities where you can share your thoughts and feelings and it is OK. | :04:42. | :04:47.
communities where you can share your What support is out there for young | :04:48. | :04:48.
carers? Carers What support is out there for young | :04:49. | :04:57.
of 87 independent partners who can provide emotional support and | :04:58. | :05:01.
practical support. Thank you for coming in and talking to us. It will | :05:02. | :05:03.
make a difference. More child refugees | :05:04. | :05:07.
from the Middle Eastern country of Syria will be allowed | :05:08. | :05:08.
to come to the UK. The Government has said it will be | :05:09. | :05:11.
offering extra help to children who have lost their families, | :05:12. | :05:14.
and are living in Syria They will work with the United | :05:15. | :05:16.
Nations to decide It's not clear yet how many children | :05:17. | :05:19.
will be coming to the UK. One of the world's top para gliders, | :05:20. | :05:26.
Horacio Llorens, completed the trip The Spanish air acrobat | :05:27. | :05:29.
flew his glider under He had to overcome snow storms, | :05:30. | :05:32.
low visibility, and the wires of his glider freezing, | :05:33. | :05:39.
in sub-zero temperatures. That's all from me. Newsround's back | :05:40. | :05:43.
right here at 4:20pm. | :05:44. | :05:52. |
