I can help. Because I'm going to be delving

into the lives of these megastars

to see who has what it takes to win the ultimate prize in pop.

That's right, it's the Ambo!

There's only one way to win the Ambo

and that's by gaining as many of my Ambo points as possible.

I'll be dishing them out over three slamming rounds of popocity...

..where I meet the people who knew stars back in the day...

..then I check out how hard they've been working...

..and finally, I scrutinise their style.

All before the big moment.

Beyonce is amazing. She's my favourite artist.

She's got a really unique voice.

We're on Team McBusted because they are just amazing.

And we were big fans of Busted and even bigger fans of McFly,

so this is like a dream come true.

So who is going to win the Ambo? It's a tough one.

I mean, Beyonce is a global pop sensation.

It doesn't get much bigger than her.

But there's only one Beyonce and there are six guys in McBusted,

and they are all awesome.

Well, there's only one way to decide.

That's right, it's time for Pop Slam!

Round One - Pop Potential. This is all about how our stars made it big.

First up...

Beyonce has been one of the world's biggest super stars

for over a decade.

But before falling Crazy In Love with fame,

she was a kid growing up right here in Houston, Texas!

It's hard to imagine it now,

but Beyonce was once just an average American kid

living in this very house.

Not only that, she was quite shy and didn't have many friends.

So how did she become one of the biggest megastars on the planet?

Well, pay attention.

When Beyonce was six years old, she started having dance lessons.

No big deal, right?

Er, actually, huge deal,

because it was her dance teacher that changed her life for ever.

And I get to meet her. So excited!

This is Darlette.

She is responsible for making Beyonce a star

and still teaches dance here in Houston today.

Now, talk to me about Beyonce. When did you first meet her?

Well, they brought her for dance classes.

She was about six years old.

And the most beautiful little girl you ever laid eyes on.

Very shy.

But when she stepped on the stage, she became someone else,

even as a little girl.

# I think I'm bad

# And Beyonce's my name... #

-And how much did she love dance back then?

-It was her life.

I think, back then, dance was more important than her singing,

because I don't think she realised what voice she had.

When did you first hear Beyonce sing?

Well, she was in the studio.

And I'm just singing and she finished a note

and hit the highest note, and I screamed.

I scared her, so she froze.

And I said, "Baby, sing it again."

And she wouldn't sing, because she was very quiet and shy.

She wouldn't sing it. And I told her I'd give her a dollar.

A dollar! And she sang it again and I was just jumping around.

I was so excited about this child with this voice.

And when her parents came, I told them, "She can sing.

"Let me put her in some talent shows."

They allowed me, and she blew everything away.

Darlette entered Beyonce

into Houston's biggest talent competition, the Sammy Awards.

And a seven-year-old Beyonce won her category. It was a huge deal!

So what do you think when you see Beyonce now,

on TV doing her thing?

It is so surreal. Everybody in every country knows my Beyonce.

And I can say... I can say, "I was her dance teacher. I was there."

No-one else can say that, but I can say that.

And it's priceless.

Two Ambo Points to Beyonce for getting a dance teacher

who helped her find her pop potential.

After Darlette uncovered Beyonce's pop potential,

she went from strength to strength and, in 1990,

she joined a rap, dance group called Girls Tyme.

That's Tyme with a Y.

They weren't Girls Tyme-with-a-Y for long.

They had loads of different names.

There was Something Fresh, Cliche, Dolls and Destiny,

before they finally decided on Destiny's Child.

You might have heard of them.

Destiny's Child was the band that made Beyonce a mega star,

but to make it big, the girls had to work hard.

They spent hours and hours

practising their singing and dancing,

and played tons of small gigs around Houston.

All their hard work finally paid off.

In 1996, Destiny's Child were signed to Columbia Records.

Whoo! They made it!

Well, maybe not quite.

They released their first album in 1998,

but it only got to number 67 in the US charts.

Awkward. But the girls didn't give up,

and in 1999 they released their second album,

The Writing's On The Wall.

And it got to number five in the charts.

Not only that, but this song...

..got them their first US number one.

The girls had finally made it.

It was deffo worth sticking at it, girls!

and becoming one of the biggest girl bands ever.

Destiny's Child had made it to the big time

and would go on to dominate the charts, on and off, for six years.

But soon, Beyonce would go solo,

and that's when she would become bigger than ever.

But more on that later.

Now let's head back to the UK to see how McBusted hit the big time.

It seems weird now, but not long ago, there was no McBusted.

But back in November 2013, there was one of the biggest announcements

that the UK had ever heard.

Two bands - McFly and Busted,

would join forces to form a super group called...McBusted.

Oh, yeah.

# Get up, get over it

# Get up and get over it... #

OK, people, listen closely. Bring it in.

This gets all gets pretty complicated,

so we need to go right back to the very beginning,

right back to 2001.

# It's what I go to school for

# Even though it is a real bore

# You can call me crazy

# But I know that she craves me

# That's what I go to school for... #

First, there was Busted,

who was originally made up of James Bourne and Matt Willis.

They both sang and played the guitar,

but they needed more than just the two of them

if they were going to make it big.

So they held auditions and found one Mr Charlie Simpson.

Oh, and this is important,

they also auditioned a guy called Tom Fletcher,

who didn't make it in in the end, but more on him later.

Busted released their first single in 2002

and they were instantly massive.

Like, really. They were, like, the 5SOS of the early noughties.

# I asked you to dance at the disco

# But you said no... #

They were one of the most successful pop rock bands the UK had ever seen.

In fact, so many record labels wanted to sign them

that they actually turned down Simon Cowell as a manager.

Take two Ambo points for that one!

Busted went from massive to humongously huge

and spent the next three years selling millions of records,

playing to huge shows and releasing killer tunes.

All was going really well, until January 2005, when...

Charlie left the band.

Nooooooooooo!

I am here to tell you that I have quit Busted.

I've had the most amazing three years.

And these two have been absolutely amazing.

Charlie, how could you?

James and Matt were gutted, and they couldn't go on without Charlie,

so they decided to call it a day.

Mega sad times!

But while Busted had been hitting the big time,

bubbling away were a band called McFly

who had been supporting Busted on tour.

Here we had Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter, Harry Judd and...

Tom Fletcher. Huh? You remember him.

# She's got a lip ring and five colours in her hair... #

So what's going on here then?

After Tom tried to get into Busted, he had ended up

A - writing some songs for them,

and B - starting up his own band, McFly.

But he wasn't the only connection between the two bands.

James "Busted" Bourne did some writing for McFly,

Harry "McFly" Judd did a bit of drumming for Busted,

and Tom "McFly" Fletcher and Matt "Busted" Willis

had both attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School.

But back to the story.

With Busted out of the picture,

McFly were becoming more and more successful.

So I've come to Bolton to meet Vicky, Danny Jones's sister,

to get all the goss.

Vicky is also a singer and musician, and I'm meeting her in a pub

where she and Danny used to perform together when they were growing up.

You're Danny's sister. Was he always singing around the house?

No, that was me! He really wasn't.

He really wasn't singing round the house.

He was playing the guitar.

Like, he'd be on the toilet with the guitar.

He'd be in bed with the guitar. Like, it was me always singing.

Singing was something that he pushed forward with

when he was a little bit older and then he would get up here and sing

and everyone went crazy for him

and he realised that he could do it and he was pretty good.

# You never asked me to stay... #

Do you have any quirky facts about Danny?

If you go up to Danny and you hold your hand out in a fist,

he'll put his nose in it. Without fail, every time.

-What do you mean?

-Like... Cos it's comfy. Try it.

But it is! It's dead comfy.

So how proud are you of your little brother?

I'm hugely proud of him. It's amazing.

It is really amazing and, obviously, I see how much he loves it,

I see how much passion he has for it, and it's amazing.

Good on you, Danny "McFly" Jones.

That's two Ambo points for making the family proud.

McFly were doing great.

Number ones, tours...

Things couldn't get any better for the boys.

Or could it?

In May 2013, McFly were playing a gig in Manchester

and who should be there hanging out?

Friend of the band and ex-Busted member James Bourne.

Yeah!

Out of the blue, McFly got him up on stage

to perform the epic Busted song, Year 3000,

and, BOOM! The crowd went wild.

# He said I've been to the year 3000

CROWD: # Not much has changed but they live under water

# And your great-great-great granddaughter

# Is pretty fine

# Pretty fine... #

This got them thinking...

McFly, Busted. Busted, McFly.

So close for so long. Could they come together to form a union?

Of course they could!

# I tried karaoke

# But they told me I was only OK

# I guess I never should have sang Beyonce... #

And so a few months later, Busted - minus Charlie - and McFly,

announced that they would be joining together to form...McBusted.

And that brings us to the end of Round One.

Beyonce and McBusted have both worked super hard

to make it big, but by my reckoning,

McBusted are just in the lead.

We've seen how our stars made it.

Now let's see how hard they've been working.

It's time for Round Two.

Round Two - Pop Success.

This is all about what our stars have been up to

to make sure that they stay at the top of the charts.

First up...Beyonce.

Beyonce's band Destiny's Child were epic.

They had eight top-ten hits in the USA, ten top tens in the UK,

not to mention the rest of the world.

They were so far off the hook, they couldn't even see it.

# I'm not gon' stop I'm gon' work harder... #

Destiny's Child were massive.

But Beyonce wanted more and decided to try going solo.

# Baby boy, you stay on my mind... #

She released her debut solo album, Dangerously In Love, in 2003.

Did the album do well?

Well, Dangerously In Love sold 11 million copies

and won five Grammys.

Now, I don't know how high your standards are,

but I'd say it did pretty well.

Have two Ambo points for a slamming debut solo album.

But the success didn't stop there.

Queen B went on to release a further four number-one albums

and 13 top-five singles.

Incredible! Have another three Ambo points.

But Beyonce isn't the only big hitter...

So far, McBusted have only released one album.

But Busted and McFly separately,

wow, now that is a whole 'nother story.

These guys are like a one-stop hit shop. Nice.

Busted have had eight top-ten hits

and McFly have 19!

But what else have our stars been up to?

Beyonce has nailed the world of singing,

but not only that, she's also a business girl.

She's been in films, has her own clothing label,

a perfume range, and as if that's not enough, she has also created

some of the most iconic dance routines of all time.

The McBusted boys also like doing some extra-curricular activities.

James and Dougie have their own clothing labels,

James has also written a musical for the West End

and Dougie and Tom have even written children's books.

But, hey, it doesn't stop there.

Those McBusted boys have also been totally owning it

in the world of reality television.

In 2011, McFly drummer Harry Judd won Strictly Come Dancing.

Busted bassist Matt Willis won I'm A Celebrity in 2006.

-Crocodile eyes.

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

-OK. That's fair enough, that.

Then, five years later,

McFly bassist Dougie Poynter was also crowned King of the Jungle.

These guys are reality TV winners.

Beyonce might not have been on a reality show,

but when it comes to her live shows, she is unbelievable.

Beyonce has performed at some of the biggest arenas across the world,

Beyonce is totally killing it when it comes to her fashion.

So to learn more, I've come to talk to pop stylist Aiyshat.

How important is Beyonce's style to her as an artist?

It's very important to her,

because I think people buy into the brand that is Queen B,

and everything that that encompasses.

I would almost say she doesn't have a style, she has styles.

So she's quite a chameleon. She likes to change it up.

So one minute, she's quite '50s rockabilly,

then she's quite tomboyish with a cap and trainers,

yeah, she does that really well.

-Has her style evolved at all?

-Yeah, I would say so.

Even when you look back, far back, to Destiny's Child,

I think she's definitely the most stylish she's ever been right now.

That is some serious style.

I'm going to dish out four Ambo points to Beyonce.

So she has glam taste in fashion,

but Beyonce's taste in food is a bit more down to earth.

This is Frenchy's Chicken in Beyonce's home town of Houston.

It may not look like a pop-star hangout,

but this place is apparently still

one of her all-time favourite restaurants.

Way to keep it real, girlfriend.

But what about McBusted?

Credit where credit's due, the six McBusted man-oids

also have some pretty impressive styles of their own.

Matt - extreme hair.

In May 2012, Tom Fletcher married his girlfriend Giovanna,

He later up loaded it to YouTube

and it went viral, getting nearly 15 million views.

And Tom's not the only romantic one.

A few months later, in December 2012, Harry Judd also got married

and, making use of his Strictly training,

performed a sensational American Smooth with his new wife, Izzy.
