Video sharing online has revolutionised the way

0:00:040:00:07

-we connect with each other for ever.

-This is mental!

0:00:070:00:10

Now everybody can share anything and everything with anyone.

0:00:100:00:14

Let's talk about the G spot!

0:00:140:00:16

And it's given birth to a new breed of celebrity.

0:00:160:00:19

That looks good. Can you do that on here?

0:00:190:00:23

By simply turning the camera on themselves, vloggers -

0:00:230:00:26

video bloggers - have billions of people watching them online.

0:00:260:00:30

You feel like you know them even though you haven't met.

0:00:300:00:33

They're sticking two fingers up to the old media establishment.

0:00:330:00:36

This is so cool!

0:00:360:00:38

They sell out stadiums and have fan bases boy bands would kill for.

0:00:380:00:42

SCREAMING

0:00:420:00:45

With jet-set lifestyles, record-breaking book and DVD sales,

0:00:450:00:49

they're mixing with Hollywood A-listers

0:00:490:00:51

-and have the ear of the world's most powerful people.

-Michelle Obama!

0:00:510:00:55

This new media landscape has the power to transform lives,

0:00:550:00:59

-but there's also a darker side.

-That is harassment, violation, assault.

0:00:590:01:04

I was miserable.

0:01:040:01:06

Vloggers are now amongst the most influential people on the planet.

0:01:060:01:10

# ..We are your friends... #

0:01:140:01:18

This is the Rise Of The Superstar Vloggers.

0:01:180:01:23

Hello, best friends. Here I am vlogging, filming my YouTube channel stuff.

0:01:230:01:26

I'm here at Jamie Oliver's kitchen. Here he is.

0:01:260:01:28

Today's been mental. That was a fun flight, wasn't it?

0:01:280:01:31

It's going to be a good day today.

0:01:310:01:32

'I'm Jim Chapman and I make a living by filming my everyday life

0:01:320:01:36

'and uploading it to the internet.'

0:01:360:01:38

Yeah, should be really, really fun.

0:01:390:01:41

'I film anything, from my weekly shop, to my dog Martha.'

0:01:410:01:46

Go on, then!

0:01:460:01:47

'It started for me five years ago.

0:01:470:01:49

'My sisters were posting videos online which were gaining

0:01:490:01:52

'in popularity, so I thought I'd give it a try.'

0:01:520:01:55

Hi, YouTube.

0:01:550:01:56

Erm, so this video is basically based on the mistakes that

0:01:560:02:01

I made whilst camping at a festival.

0:02:010:02:03

This is the first video that's actually on my channel.

0:02:030:02:06

So at 22, I think I was when I was doing this,

0:02:060:02:09

I didn't really have many friends.

0:02:090:02:11

If you haven't watched it yet, go back and watch it now.

0:02:110:02:14

Just really wasn't happy. In fact, I'd go as far as to say I was miserable.

0:02:140:02:17

I mean, when I first started, really,

0:02:170:02:21

it's kind of like an antisocial way of the social, because you're

0:02:210:02:24

just talking to a camera, you're not talking to actual people.

0:02:240:02:27

Straight away I knew I loved it.

0:02:270:02:28

Welcome to Everyday Jim.

0:02:280:02:30

'I became obsessed with vlogging.'

0:02:300:02:33

Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to another airport.

0:02:330:02:35

My name is Jim Chapman, I'll be your host today.

0:02:350:02:37

'Over time, I grew in confidence, developed a particular style

0:02:370:02:41

'and built a following.

0:02:410:02:43

'Whatever it is I'm doing, people are watching and engaging.

0:02:430:02:46

'Now my videos have been viewed almost 200,000,000 times

0:02:460:02:51

'and no-one's more surprised than me.'

0:02:510:02:53

The question I get asked most by everyone is, why you?

0:02:530:02:58

Why have you got all these subscribers and all these views?

0:02:580:03:01

Honestly, I think it's kind of impossible to quantify.

0:03:010:03:04

You can't write it down, you can't put numbers on it.

0:03:040:03:06

It's just something that comes across on camera.

0:03:060:03:08

There's a relationship between myself and my audience

0:03:080:03:12

erm...and I think you can't make sense of it.

0:03:120:03:16

It just sort of happens.

0:03:160:03:17

If you try and define the single thing

0:03:170:03:20

that makes a vlogger successful,

0:03:200:03:22

I think it's an impossible task.

0:03:220:03:24

Having a great personality, being funny, being engaging,

0:03:240:03:27

being relatable - you've got to connect with people

0:03:270:03:30

on a personal level millions and millions of times over,

0:03:300:03:34

as well as having that secret sauce

0:03:340:03:36

that puts you head and shoulders above the rest.

0:03:360:03:38

'And people are liking what they see,

0:03:380:03:40

'no matter how trivial or everyday the content is.'

0:03:400:03:44

Why don't you come along? Let's enjoy the day.

0:03:440:03:46

Vlogging has become a global phenomenon, adopted

0:03:460:03:49

by millions of others who have a desire to share their stories too.

0:03:490:03:54

Telling stories about our lives is a basic human instinct

0:03:540:03:57

and need that we have to relate to other people.

0:03:570:03:59

We've done it when we sat around the campfires as cavemen and women,

0:03:590:04:03

we do it through soap operas, we do it through talk shows and reality TV

0:04:030:04:07

and vlogging is really the next stage of that.

0:04:070:04:10

Ten years ago, YouTube was launched.

0:04:100:04:12

All right, who is watching YouTube?

0:04:120:04:16

Increasing availability of the internet and cheap technology

0:04:160:04:19

meant uploading videos became widely accessible and easy to do.

0:04:190:04:23

Vlogging was born.

0:04:240:04:26

I find your videos strangely compelling.

0:04:300:04:32

Video creators began uploading anything

0:04:320:04:35

from the insane to the mundane.

0:04:350:04:38

People are watching me vlog and probably think I'm nuts.

0:04:380:04:41

Nothing was off-limits.

0:04:410:04:43

BABY CRIES

0:04:430:04:44

A fascinating place to go to see all the videos

0:04:440:04:47

young people have produced.

0:04:470:04:50

After four years, YouTube introduced adverts, making it

0:04:500:04:54

possible to earn big money from shared revenue and endorsements.

0:04:540:04:58

The internet became flooded with people showing their talents,

0:04:580:05:01

sharing tips or promoting products.

0:05:010:05:04

I like to use her mask.

0:05:040:05:07

The superstar vloggers began to emerge.

0:05:070:05:11

I'm going to meet some of the biggest names in the vlogging world

0:05:110:05:14

to discover what vlogging means to them.

0:05:140:05:17

Why do they stand out and what does it say about all of us?

0:05:170:05:21

Good morning, guys!

0:05:260:05:29

How are you doing?

0:05:290:05:31

Alfie Deyes and his vlogging girlfriend Zoella are internet royalty.

0:05:310:05:36

When visitors to London's Madame Tussauds were asked

0:05:360:05:38

who should be this year's addition to their waxwork Hall of Fame,

0:05:380:05:42

Zoe and Alfie received more votes than any other celebrity.

0:05:420:05:46

We're here, we're in Madame Tussauds in London,

0:05:460:05:49

because today is the official launch,

0:05:490:05:51

like, party evening of Zoe and I.

0:05:510:05:55

Oh, my God!

0:05:550:05:59

It's so weird.

0:05:590:06:02

Starting when he was only 16,

0:06:020:06:04

Alfie's videos have now clocked up three quarters of a billion views.

0:06:040:06:09

What have you been up to today?

0:06:090:06:11

I've been putting fake tattoos all over my arm.

0:06:110:06:14

I need to get to the gym.

0:06:140:06:15

This morning, I've just been doing house chores and jobs.

0:06:150:06:20

His videos are about anything,

0:06:200:06:22

from yoga to sausages to helicopter rides.

0:06:220:06:25

So cool.

0:06:250:06:26

I've known Alfie since we were both starting out as a vloggers.

0:06:320:06:36

I wanted to find out

0:06:360:06:37

when he first realised making videos could be more than just a hobby.

0:06:370:06:41

I was working like four hours a week,

0:06:420:06:44

just like a weekend job in a clothes shop in town

0:06:440:06:48

and the first time my YouTube earnings

0:06:480:06:51

earned me more than the clothes shop, I went into work the next day

0:06:510:06:54

and just handed in my notice, which a normal person would be like,

0:06:540:06:56

"Cool, I earned double - I earned at YouTube and I earned at the clothes shop."

0:06:560:07:00

I was just like, "OK, if I sack the clothes shop, then I can put double

0:07:000:07:03

"the time into my YouTube," so I just did that.

0:07:030:07:06

Life for you has kind of gone a bit crazy recently, right?

0:07:070:07:12

You're a wax figure in Madame Tussauds.

0:07:120:07:15

My hair looks better than real life. No, that looks good.

0:07:150:07:18

Can you do that on here?

0:07:180:07:20

Yeah, I think all of us have been offered

0:07:200:07:23

and done some crazy stuff that we never ever expected.

0:07:230:07:27

I'm in bloomin' Madame Tussauds. I'm in Madame Tussauds.

0:07:270:07:31

Like, I've got a wax figure of me and you can go and see it in London.

0:07:310:07:35

That is insane.

0:07:360:07:37

That is actual concrete evidence of the level at which you are.

0:07:370:07:42

Genuinely at that level, in the same room as Kim Kardashian

0:07:420:07:45

and David Beckham and the Queen and the leader of the Free World.

0:07:450:07:50

It's crazy to think that people have voted for you to be

0:07:500:07:55

-in the same company as those people, immortalised for ever in wax.

-Yeah.

0:07:550:07:59

That's...

0:07:590:08:00

I can't even get my head around

0:08:000:08:02

how far this has come in the last five years.

0:08:020:08:05

Alfie's fans love to watch him vlogging his real life,

0:08:050:08:08

but I wanted to know

0:08:080:08:09

just how authentic HE feels he is in his videos.

0:08:090:08:13

-I think I'm hopefully exactly the same.

-Yeah.

-Like,

0:08:130:08:15

I went to hospital recently and had like two biopsies

0:08:150:08:20

taken from my chest, I filmed all of that.

0:08:200:08:22

As soon as they had finished the procedure, I was vlogging

0:08:220:08:25

in the hospital bed, showing them everything.

0:08:250:08:27

I like to just try and be completely real.

0:08:270:08:30

How much control do the audience have over what your end product is?

0:08:300:08:35

I think quite a lot. I think it's quite positive.

0:08:350:08:38

I think it's such a strong relationship.

0:08:380:08:41

Like, these people know me better than like some of my friends maybe.

0:08:410:08:44

They know everything about me and I love that.

0:08:440:08:47

But there is a growing backlash against hugely popular

0:08:470:08:50

vloggers constantly sharing every detail of their lives.

0:08:500:08:53

Alfie was recently singled out in a VICE magazine article.

0:08:530:08:58

-I think the headline was something like, "Vain and Inane."

-Yeah.

0:08:580:09:02

How does that feel for you?

0:09:020:09:03

They don't care about the person at the other side.

0:09:030:09:05

Luckily, I'm really strong, I don't take any of that in

0:09:050:09:08

and I'm just like, "Cool, you can waste your time writing about me.

0:09:080:09:11

"I'm not even going to look at it."

0:09:110:09:12

Part of it is because... a lack of understanding,

0:09:120:09:15

like, just not knowing the form of media that YouTube is

0:09:150:09:18

and the thing that I think is the most important thing to

0:09:180:09:21

remember is that as soon as I tick upload, or you tick upload,

0:09:210:09:25

or whoever puts upload on their video, that's it,

0:09:250:09:28

we're not making people watch it.

0:09:280:09:30

People are spending their time clicking on my channel,

0:09:300:09:32

clicking on my videos cos they want to watch it.

0:09:320:09:34

We're not making them do that, they're choosing to do that

0:09:340:09:37

and I think that's the most powerful thing.

0:09:370:09:39

Global fame now means it's virtually impossible for Alfie to

0:09:410:09:45

walk the streets without being recognised.

0:09:450:09:47

-Oh, my God!

-What's your name?

0:09:470:09:49

Nice to meet you. Bless you.

0:09:520:09:55

-Can I take a picture?

-Yeah, of course you can. Sure.

0:09:550:09:57

JIM LAUGHS

0:09:570:09:59

OK, ready? One, two, three.

0:09:590:10:02

-There you go.

-It's lovely to meet you.

0:10:030:10:06

-Did you enjoy it?

-Yeah.

0:10:110:10:14

-See you later.

-See you later.

-Have a nice day. Bye-bye.

0:10:140:10:18

Often they know so much about me from uploading every single day that

0:10:180:10:22

-it's just like chatting to a friend.

-Yeah.

0:10:220:10:25

Hello. How are you doing?

0:10:250:10:27

No way!

0:10:290:10:31

-You got it?

-That's so awesome. Have a lovely day.

0:10:310:10:34

What do you see for yourself? For the rest of us,

0:10:340:10:36

for vlogging in general in the next five, ten years?

0:10:360:10:40

I think it's just going to grow and grow. Like, there is so much more

0:10:400:10:43

than just, "Oh, I like this person's videos," now.

0:10:430:10:46

They're buying books to do with us,

0:10:460:10:48

they're buying, like, merchandise, it's like turning up to events

0:10:480:10:51

to meet you, coming up to us in the street.

0:10:510:10:53

It's so much more than simply watching the videos.

0:10:530:10:55

Alfie really loves what he does. He has a real passion for it.

0:10:550:10:59

He consumes so much vlogging but also has a real passion

0:10:590:11:02

for creating it too and he sees what he does as legitimate.

0:11:020:11:06

He dismisses the critics and has confidence in the media

0:11:060:11:10

he works within and knows it's of value.

0:11:100:11:12

He also sees a future for vlogging in general.

0:11:120:11:15

He knows that it's just getting bigger and bigger.

0:11:150:11:18

And here they are,

0:11:200:11:21

fresh from their triumphant appearances in the United States.

0:11:210:11:24

Throughout the decades, from The Beatles to the Spice Girls to

0:11:240:11:28

One Direction, individuals have been plucked from obscurity

0:11:280:11:31

and propelled to superstardom.

0:11:310:11:34

But this is not the music industry.

0:11:340:11:36

It's people simply documenting and sharing their ordinary lives.

0:11:360:11:40

And when Alfie and I started vlogging from the safety of our bedrooms,

0:11:400:11:44

we had no idea that putting videos online would lead to money and fame.

0:11:440:11:50

And the wealth and stardom that can come from uploading videos is

0:11:550:11:58

potentially enormous.

0:11:580:12:01

KSI is the biggest British internet superstar.

0:12:010:12:05

I don't know what I'm doing!

0:12:050:12:07

The shy kid from Watford developed a larger-than-life on-screen

0:12:070:12:11

personality, which attracted a huge following.

0:12:110:12:14

I'm going to see if I can try

0:12:140:12:16

and wake myself up on the whole of my journey, so let's do this.

0:12:160:12:20

OK, so I'm in with Tyson! Tyson is driving! How's it going, man?!

0:12:200:12:24

-Good, good, good.

-Awesome! So let's go to the airport!

0:12:240:12:27

I'm on a plane!

0:12:270:12:29

Starting by filming himself playing and commenting on video games,

0:12:290:12:33

he now vlogs, acts, makes comedy skits and raps.

0:12:330:12:37

-RAPS:

-# ..Got rocks on my wrist that you can't resist

0:12:370:12:40

# Cash flow greater... #

0:12:400:12:42

At 22 years old, he's a one-man entertainment channel,

0:12:420:12:45

being watched 24/7 around the globe.

0:12:450:12:48

To be successful you have to be passionate.

0:12:480:12:50

You have to be extremely passionate about your art.

0:12:500:12:53

Every video that I've done, like, I've crafted it to the way

0:12:530:12:55

I've wanted it to be and I've wanted it to be entertaining

0:12:550:12:59

and I wanted for it to work and for people to laugh at this certain bit.

0:12:590:13:02

You have to be passionate, you have to love what you do.

0:13:020:13:05

If you don't love it, then...stop.

0:13:050:13:07

He has 11 million subscribers on his main channel alone.

0:13:070:13:12

He makes money from endorsements and the ads placed around his videos.

0:13:120:13:17

But this level of success didn't happen without extreme dedication.

0:13:170:13:21

A lot of people think YouTube is quite easy when it just isn't.

0:13:220:13:25

Like, I've been doing YouTube for six years now

0:13:250:13:28

and I'd say the hardest years were definitely the first three

0:13:280:13:31

or four years. Like, you have to constantly put up

0:13:310:13:35

content that is good, you know, just to make people come back to

0:13:350:13:39

your channel and I work every single day just to try and expand my brand.

0:13:390:13:44

I have, literally, been so busy doing stuff...

0:13:440:13:48

KSI's enthusiasm for whatever he's doing

0:13:480:13:50

is matched by his armies of fans.

0:13:500:13:54

Today, tickets for his live music gig go on sale.

0:13:540:13:57

Real quick, it's six o'clock, so I've just said, "Preordered tickets

0:13:570:14:00

"are up for the show. Check your e-mails."

0:14:000:14:02

We're going to check to see if...

0:14:020:14:06

the people are buying tickets right now.

0:14:060:14:08

-Oh, my God! It sold out.

-HE GIGGLES

0:14:080:14:12

It sold out in two minutes. Mental.

0:14:120:14:15

But in spite of his wealth, money isn't his main motivation.

0:14:150:14:18

Yeah, I'll take money. Like, I'm not stupid.

0:14:180:14:21

Like, money makes my life easier and I'm much happier with money

0:14:210:14:26

but, I mean, I'm just doing what I love,

0:14:260:14:30

so I don't really care, essentially.

0:14:300:14:33

It's like, cool, all right, I'm getting this money on the side,

0:14:330:14:36

but I'm still going to be doing the thing that I enjoy,

0:14:360:14:38

because I just enjoy it.

0:14:380:14:39

What all superstar vloggers have in common is a true

0:14:390:14:43

passion for making content.

0:14:430:14:44

That love of what they do transfers onto screen

0:14:440:14:47

and becomes infectious and clickable.

0:14:470:14:50

In the last couple of years,

0:14:530:14:54

vloggers are increasingly moving beyond their online platforms

0:14:540:14:58

with their own product lines, books and films.

0:14:580:15:01

Some of the talent are breaking through into mainstream media,

0:15:010:15:04

just because the amount of interest in them has kind of peaked to

0:15:040:15:07

a point where people at newspapers and TV networks are interested.

0:15:070:15:11

Vlogger Joe Sugg has more than seven million subscribers who

0:15:110:15:14

regularly send him challenges, which he then films and posts online.

0:15:140:15:18

Now he's created his first graphic novel.

0:15:180:15:20

We'll talk to him in just a moment.

0:15:200:15:22

-Morning, Joe.

-Hello.

-Thatcher Joe even.

0:15:220:15:24

Only two years ago, Zoella's brother Joe was still working for his

0:15:240:15:28

uncle as a roof thatcher in Somerset and making videos in his spare time.

0:15:280:15:33

I was still on a roof for like five days a week and I'd get home

0:15:330:15:35

and then make a video and then... It was very much like a side thing,

0:15:350:15:39

but then I was so worried about doing it full-time,

0:15:390:15:41

because even back then,

0:15:410:15:42

-YouTube wasn't...

-No.

-It wasn't a big thing

0:15:420:15:46

and so I was thinking, if I do do it full-time,

0:15:460:15:48

I'm so worried that there's not going to be enough for me to do.

0:15:480:15:50

Obviously I can keep making videos, but I was worried that

0:15:500:15:53

it's not like proper, like a proper thing,

0:15:530:15:55

as opposed to what I was doing.

0:15:550:15:56

But having seen his sister and Alfie's careers take off,

0:15:560:16:00

Joe was convinced vlogging could be a way to make a living.

0:16:000:16:03

It got to the point where I was being summoned to London

0:16:030:16:06

like three times a week to do, like, these amazing things with brands,

0:16:060:16:10

just amazing opportunities, and so I had to ask my uncle,

0:16:100:16:14

"Is it all right if I, you know, go up to London three times this week?"

0:16:140:16:17

He's like, "Well, we've got a whole roof to do. We need to get it done before Christmas."

0:16:170:16:20

I was like, "Yeah, but it's kind of like, it's a big deal."

0:16:200:16:23

Now he's the man of the moment.

0:16:230:16:25

His DVD, a road movie with fellow vlogger Caspar Lee,

0:16:250:16:28

tops the pre-order chart.

0:16:280:16:31

And his graphic novel is breaking all sales records.

0:16:310:16:35

What is interesting is we're kind of experiencing

0:16:350:16:38

what is like a new kind of fame.

0:16:380:16:40

Like, on the internet we're very, very well-known,

0:16:400:16:42

but in terms of traditional media and stuff, we're not known at all

0:16:420:16:45

and it's really exciting to see, like, how people react to that,

0:16:450:16:48

because there's a lot of people that are scared of what we do,

0:16:480:16:51

there's a lot of people that are terrified of what we do,

0:16:510:16:53

and there's a lot of people that are very, very excited about us,

0:16:530:16:56

because we're these new people that have come out of nowhere,

0:16:560:16:59

who have these massively huge, engaged audiences.

0:16:590:17:02

Just we're our own people, we're making the videos in our bedroom,

0:17:020:17:05

no massive production, all that kind of stuff,

0:17:050:17:08

and we're just like getting crazy, crazy engaged views.

0:17:080:17:11

-Ready?

-Yep.

0:17:110:17:14

OH!

0:17:140:17:15

On top of his everyday vlogs, he also films challenges and pranks,

0:17:150:17:20

and has a channel dedicated to gaming.

0:17:200:17:23

His videos have been watched over half a billion times.

0:17:230:17:26

-Do you ever feel pressure or like stress?

-Er...yes.

0:17:260:17:31

Yeah, I'd be lying if I said I didn't.

0:17:310:17:32

You forget that you're making

0:17:320:17:35

videos for an audience of five million people.

0:17:350:17:38

With fan numbers so huge,

0:17:380:17:40

there's an insatiable demand both on the internet and beyond.

0:17:400:17:44

These people are creative people.

0:17:440:17:46

They're entertainers and they can entertain on other platforms

0:17:460:17:49

as well, because that's their talent.

0:17:490:17:51

So if you take someone that has ten million subscribers on YouTube

0:17:510:17:54

and they write a novel, those ten million people that subscribe to that person

0:17:540:17:58

on YouTube are going to be interested in the contents of the novel as well.

0:17:580:18:02

Today, I'm doing my big London signing.

0:18:020:18:05

-SCREAMING

-Oh, my God.

0:18:050:18:07

I'll be down in a second, down in a second. Hang on.

0:18:090:18:11

At the launch of Joe's graphic novel,

0:18:110:18:13

1,000 dedicated fans queued for hours just for a hug and a selfie.

0:18:130:18:19

SCREAMING

0:18:190:18:20

Gives you like, makes the hairs go up on the back of your neck,

0:18:230:18:26

that kind of feeling. It's cool.

0:18:260:18:28

-There you go. Thank you so much for waiting.

-Have a good day.

-You too.

0:18:280:18:31

I just love him cos he makes me laugh when I watch his videos, they're fun.

0:18:310:18:34

I've been a Sugglette since 2011

0:18:340:18:36

and he's just so funny.

0:18:360:18:39

I always love Sundays because that's when he uploads a new video.

0:18:390:18:43

It was amazing. It was worth waiting,

0:18:430:18:45

-all those hours standing up.

-And he's hot.

-Yeah.

0:18:450:18:50

What you're talking about here is really young people starting out

0:18:500:18:53

in their careers and being propelled to global superstar status.

0:18:530:18:59

With millions of followers,

0:19:020:19:03

vloggers are being courted by the mainstream media.

0:19:030:19:06

Alfie, Zoe and Joe were part of the Band Aid single.

0:19:060:19:10

KSI is selling out music venues

0:19:100:19:13

and Zoe appeared on the Great Comic Relief Bake Off.

0:19:130:19:17

But for me, being comfortable with my celebrity status

0:19:170:19:20

in the virtual world doesn't necessarily translate to

0:19:200:19:22

being confident with fame in the real world.

0:19:220:19:24

I'm really nervous right now.

0:19:240:19:26

I'm about to go to Leicester Square to host the red carpet

0:19:260:19:29

of the premier of Matt Damon's new film called

0:19:290:19:32

The Martian and because this is kind of like a new avenue for me,

0:19:320:19:35

I don't often do a lot of live stuff to an audience that

0:19:350:19:39

isn't really mine, it always is terrifying.

0:19:390:19:42

HE EXHALES

0:19:470:19:49

My car's on its way.

0:19:490:19:52

I'm really nervous.

0:19:530:19:55

I haven't eaten anything, I can't keep still,

0:19:550:19:58

I'm just really freaking out. I hope it'll be OK.

0:19:580:20:01

I don't know what I'll be able to film when I get there.

0:20:010:20:04

I might not catch up with you till afterwards, so...wish me luck.

0:20:040:20:08

Now I think about it, it's very odd that I talk to this thing

0:20:080:20:12

and then post it on the internet, but the end result is really lovely.

0:20:120:20:16

It's a community at the other end watching and participating

0:20:160:20:20

and leaving comments.

0:20:200:20:21

They're really involved in my life

0:20:210:20:23

and I think it's brilliant that I can reach them whenever I want to,

0:20:230:20:27

however I want to, just by talking and saying what's on my mind.

0:20:270:20:30

Vlogging is not about a single person in front of a camera,

0:20:300:20:33

like broadcasting content.

0:20:330:20:35

It really is about that interaction with the audience,

0:20:350:20:37

the other person also reacting,

0:20:370:20:39

the people who are viewing reacting to what they do, giving them

0:20:390:20:42

that sense of support and that what they're doing is appreciated.

0:20:420:20:45

See, that's a much better job. I could just do that instead.

0:20:550:20:57

-I love bubbles. Look how much joy he's bringing.

-Hello!

-Hello.

0:20:570:21:01

Oh, I love you too. What's your name?

0:21:010:21:03

'I started vlogging in my bedroom because I found meeting people

0:21:030:21:06

'out in the real world incredibly difficult,

0:21:060:21:08

'but being the focus of attention has become a big part of my job.'

0:21:080:21:12

Welcome, everyone, for the amazing,

0:21:140:21:16

very exciting premiere of The Martian.

0:21:160:21:20

'Whilst vlogging has become second nature,

0:21:210:21:24

'the pressure of live broadcast makes the adrenaline kick in.'

0:21:240:21:28

It's the one and only Matt Damon!

0:21:280:21:31

Thank you. This is incredible. You guys are amazing.

0:21:310:21:36

-Do you ever get used to this reaction from the crowd?

-No, never!

0:21:360:21:39

I love you, Jim!

0:21:390:21:40

'And the crowds haven't only come for the Hollywood stars.'

0:21:400:21:43

Jim, it's my birthday!

0:21:430:21:45

It's so weird to think that just four and a half,

0:21:480:21:52

five years ago I was really, really shy. Now I'm on the red carpet

0:21:520:21:56

interviewing Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain,

0:21:560:21:58

and it's just a very odd experience.

0:21:580:22:00

Hello, everyone. Welcome to a very rainy day in Norwich.

0:22:060:22:09

Norwich is obviously where I'm from,

0:22:090:22:10

it's my hometown and I'm here today with the BBC.

0:22:100:22:13

Look, here's Trevor. He's filming me filming stuff,

0:22:130:22:15

it's kind of like Inception.

0:22:150:22:17

'When vlogging's your job,

0:22:170:22:18

'you're constantly looking for an opportunity to film something.'

0:22:180:22:21

I guess I will keep you updated with things as they happen.

0:22:210:22:24

I think first stop is to see my sisters.

0:22:240:22:27

'My sisters inspired me to start vlogging.

0:22:270:22:30

'They've seen me go from filming videos in my bedroom to

0:22:300:22:33

'hosting live red-carpet events.'

0:22:330:22:35

-Lovely to see you.

-You too!

-Come on.

-Thanks very much.

0:22:350:22:39

'I wanted to hear their thoughts

0:22:390:22:40

'on the impact that vlogging has had on all of us.'

0:22:400:22:43

-Hello. You all right?

-Yeah, I'm very well. How are you?

0:22:430:22:46

I'm good. Just making a tea.

0:22:460:22:47

What is this thing that you're doing today?

0:22:480:22:51

So, we are investigating the phenomenon of vlogging, so where it

0:22:510:22:56

started, where it is now and where it's going to go in the future.

0:22:560:22:59

-I want to know where it's going to go in the future.

-Me too.

0:22:590:23:02

But I think you probably are more pertinent to where it all started,

0:23:020:23:05

-because...

-We're like future-proof.

0:23:050:23:07

Yeah, well, you were kind of the originals.

0:23:070:23:09

-We're the grandmothers of YouTube.

-Yeah.

-Been there since...

0:23:090:23:11

-Well, it had been going two years before we joined.

-Two or three.

0:23:110:23:14

But I think, out of everyone, you're probably the ones who have...

0:23:140:23:17

There's been people who have come and gone,

0:23:170:23:19

-but I think you have maintained the entire time.

-Oh, it's hard!

0:23:190:23:22

-Believe me, it's hard.

-Yeah, but it's interesting.

0:23:220:23:25

-Shall we go?

-Yes.

0:23:250:23:26

-Hi, guys. Hi, guys.

-Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Pixiwoo.

0:23:260:23:29

Today, I'm going to do a Rachel Weisz tutorial.

0:23:290:23:32

Sam and Nic were already professional make-up artists

0:23:320:23:34

when they started posting video tutorials.

0:23:340:23:38

Just take a small amount, just dab it on.

0:23:380:23:40

The finish is slightly different I would say.

0:23:400:23:43

Now they have 1.9 million subscribers

0:23:430:23:46

and have used their popularity to build a global beauty product range.

0:23:460:23:50

Not bad given that they only discovered vlogging by accident,

0:23:500:23:54

when a friend asked Sam for some make-up advice.

0:23:540:23:57

I just decided to film it rather than bullet point it in an e-mail,

0:23:570:24:01

so I just filmed it in the little camera in the MacBook,

0:24:010:24:04

-stuck it on YouTube.

-Was it for one person?

0:24:040:24:06

I didn't even know that other people could watch it.

0:24:060:24:09

It was just a way to get the video to her

0:24:090:24:11

and then loads of other people watched it and requested videos.

0:24:110:24:13

Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Pixiwoo.

0:24:130:24:16

Today's video that we've got for you is our favourite foundations.

0:24:160:24:20

Sam and Nic weren't interested in sharing their lives or entertaining.

0:24:200:24:24

Their uploads were simply a way of passing on expertise.

0:24:240:24:28

It was the responses we got from people saying, "Oh, my God.

0:24:280:24:31

"That changed my life. That video." And it was make-up,

0:24:310:24:33

do you know what I mean? It's something so...

0:24:330:24:36

You think it's insignificant,

0:24:360:24:37

but it's a massive deal to a lot of people.

0:24:370:24:39

I know, for me, it was kind of a confidence thing,

0:24:390:24:42

-because you know before I started, I was really shy.

-Yeah.

0:24:420:24:44

It was doing videos that actually made me realise that

0:24:440:24:47

I didn't have to be shy there, because I was shy in public,

0:24:470:24:51

but in my private domain, I just happened to have a camera there.

0:24:510:24:54

-I could be...

-You.

-..what I wanted to be. You know, kind of confident

0:24:540:24:58

and a sufficient human being, as opposed to someone who's kind of

0:24:580:25:01

crippled with anxiety about social interactions.

0:25:010:25:03

It's like vlogging has given you the confidence to be this person.

0:25:030:25:06

In 2014, my sisters uploaded a video that was very

0:25:070:25:12

unlike their usual make-up tutorials.

0:25:120:25:14

It was about events that had a big impact on our family

0:25:140:25:17

when we were growing up.

0:25:170:25:18

-So, a lot of you will recognise our mum.

-Hi, everybody.

0:25:180:25:22

And today, we're going to be talking about domestic violence.

0:25:220:25:26

The first instance was he pulled me down the stairs by my hair.

0:25:260:25:30

Yeah, I was shocked and I was frightened and, you know...

0:25:300:25:34

just didn't know.

0:25:340:25:35

You know, you're frightened that you're actually going to be killed.

0:25:350:25:41

You're frightened for your children.

0:25:410:25:43

I know it was a really tough time

0:25:430:25:46

and I know it has affected me mentally.

0:25:460:25:48

You know, I've seen a therapist about it,

0:25:480:25:51

because it's really kind of done something.

0:25:510:25:54

In the whole time I've done YouTube, I've never once

0:25:540:25:57

mentioned, you know, my history with dad.

0:25:570:25:59

I don't really want it to define me.

0:25:590:26:01

I don't want people to think, "Oh, there's that kid.

0:26:010:26:03

"The reason he's done well is because he made that video about his dad."

0:26:030:26:06

That's so interesting that you would say that when we're doing it

0:26:060:26:09

so, you know, we change what it was.

0:26:090:26:13

It definitely doesn't have to define you.

0:26:130:26:16

-We did it to show that it's completely opposite of defining you.

-Yeah.

0:26:160:26:21

The chat with my sisters brought up memories I wasn't expecting

0:26:230:26:27

and it's reminded me of the power vlogging can have.

0:26:270:26:30

It's not just about entertainment.

0:26:310:26:34

It's a medium that allows anyone to share their story.

0:26:340:26:37

It's the day after we had to go to hospital

0:26:380:26:41

to get my dad's next set of test results.

0:26:410:26:44

Obviously, it's terminal cancer.

0:26:440:26:46

He will still die from this, but it's like...

0:26:460:26:50

..it's like someone's fucking pulled a pin on a grenade.

0:26:520:26:55

I'm a brother, I'm a son, I'm a friend...

0:26:550:27:00

..and I also happen to be a heroin addict.

0:27:020:27:05

I've been thinking long and hard and contemplating

0:27:050:27:09

whether to post this video,

0:27:090:27:11

and I was and I wasn't and I was and I wasn't.

0:27:110:27:14

I finally decided, after a lot of thinking,

0:27:140:27:17

that, yeah, I need to do it.

0:27:170:27:19

It's for me and my children. I need to raise awareness.

0:27:190:27:23

With vlogging, the creator-to-viewer relationship

0:27:260:27:29

is intimate and intense.

0:27:290:27:32

Fans not only feel like they know their favourite vloggers,

0:27:320:27:35

they can contact them directly, commenting on videos

0:27:350:27:38

in a public space, but this can have positive and negative consequences.

0:27:380:27:43

One vlogger who felt the impact of viewer comments is Sammi Maria.

0:27:430:27:47

Hey, guys. It's Sunday morning and I'm back.

0:27:470:27:51

So, I've just been kind of watching a few YouTube videos,

0:27:510:27:55

looking at your comments and everything.

0:27:550:27:57

Sammi Maria is a fashion and style vlogger with her own clothing range.

0:27:570:28:02

In many ways, Sammi is living the dream,

0:28:020:28:04

but when the relationship with her vlogger boyfriend ended,

0:28:040:28:07

online speculation grew to such an extent,

0:28:070:28:10

she felt compelled to publicly respond.

0:28:100:28:13

I didn't want to do this video for a long time, because for one,

0:28:150:28:18

why bring it up again? It's been ages.

0:28:180:28:21

What became one of Sammi's most-watched videos

0:28:210:28:24

was not her usual kind of content.

0:28:240:28:26

I went through domestic abuse, so physical abuse, emotional, mentally.

0:28:260:28:31

When you go through it, you're almost in a denial, to be honest.

0:28:310:28:34

I wanted to ask Sammi why she decided to reveal

0:28:340:28:38

details about her private life online.

0:28:380:28:41

Because on social media I was getting a lot of like assumptions

0:28:410:28:46

about what might or what might not have happened

0:28:460:28:49

and I just felt very...

0:28:490:28:51

I just felt like I really wanted to stand up for myself, I think.

0:28:510:28:54

So it was probably the most difficult thing that

0:28:540:28:58

I've filmed, I think.

0:28:580:28:59

I don't want to bring it all up afresh again, because, for me,

0:28:590:29:02

it's horrible. Like, I don't want to relive it again.

0:29:020:29:05

Do you regret it at all? Do you think it was a good decision?

0:29:100:29:13

Yeah. No, I don't regret it actually.

0:29:130:29:15

Like, when I was filming it, I said, "I don't know if I'll keep this up."

0:29:150:29:18

There was such an overwhelming amount of comments

0:29:180:29:20

and e-mails of girls that actually had gone through it as well

0:29:200:29:24

and that really made me want to keep it up there,

0:29:240:29:27

and it like solidified that it was the right choice.

0:29:270:29:30

If they could watch this

0:29:300:29:32

and know that you can get out of something and you can...

0:29:320:29:35

Like, there are people who will, like, value you.

0:29:350:29:39

It's hard to know what to share and when to share it

0:29:390:29:44

and what you can say and how it can affect other people.

0:29:440:29:47

Yeah, it felt like a big responsibility to have

0:29:470:29:50

so many different types of people that may see it as well,

0:29:500:29:54

-and if anyone was searching for something to help or...

-Sure.

0:29:540:29:57

..you know, something like that on the internet,

0:29:570:29:59

then, it's there for them.

0:29:590:30:01

I know with my family that it was an issue when I was young,

0:30:010:30:04

and it was kind of swept under the rug

0:30:040:30:06

until my sisters actually made a video on it with my mum.

0:30:060:30:09

I loved watching the video as well, that Sam and Nic did.

0:30:090:30:12

It made me feel better as well.

0:30:120:30:14

And anyway, I know a lot of people that will comment

0:30:140:30:16

and still say I'm a liar and still call me this and that.

0:30:160:30:20

Whatever, like, I know the truth.

0:30:200:30:22

Confessional videos about personal issues

0:30:220:30:24

often get high viewing figures.

0:30:240:30:26

Sammi's domestic-abuse video has been seen many more times

0:30:260:30:30

than her average vlogs.

0:30:300:30:31

'I wondered if this had been part of Sammi's motivation for sharing

0:30:310:30:34

'something so private.'

0:30:340:30:36

Do you think in a weird kind of contradictory type way,

0:30:360:30:39

it's almost elevated your channel?

0:30:390:30:42

-Did you expect that? Did you know it was going to happen at all?

-No.

0:30:420:30:45

I wasn't thinking about anything really, then,

0:30:450:30:47

just wanting to talk and get it out, so, yeah,

0:30:470:30:51

I think, only afterwards I noticed the views and things like that, but

0:30:510:30:55

there's no part of me that's wanted to keep it up

0:30:550:30:59

to keep views or anything.

0:30:590:31:00

Because it's such an emotional, personal thing, that's all it is.

0:31:000:31:04

Sharing details of your private life in public is risky.

0:31:040:31:08

What you choose to upload can end up defining you.

0:31:080:31:12

At a certain point you might make the decision to write or to record

0:31:120:31:17

a confessional vlog, because it is part of who you are

0:31:170:31:19

and you're a public personality at that point,

0:31:190:31:22

you are putting your life out there.

0:31:220:31:23

There's no going back though. Once you've done it, you've done it.

0:31:230:31:26

It's out there and people are going to see you in that light as well.

0:31:260:31:29

They're going to see that as an identifying moment.

0:31:290:31:31

It can be really hard, you know, to figure out what is correct.

0:31:310:31:36

We are still in this world where we're trying to develop

0:31:360:31:38

an etiquette for how to behave online and that we don't have

0:31:380:31:42

yet established, so vloggers, at this moment, are pioneers.

0:31:420:31:45

I've come to LA, the vlogging capital of the United States.

0:31:500:31:54

And here, the world's biggest vloggers are shaking things up,

0:31:560:31:59

elbowing out the old stars

0:31:590:32:01

and establishing themselves as the new glitterati,

0:32:010:32:04

none more so than my good friend Tyler Oakley.

0:32:040:32:08

Well, hello, everybody!

0:32:080:32:09

My name is Tyler Oakley and I have had the best day ever.

0:32:090:32:14

With over half a billion views, enormous global success

0:32:140:32:17

and his face splashed across billboards all over America,

0:32:170:32:21

Tyler is a sensation in the vlogging world and way beyond.

0:32:210:32:25

-Hey!

-Hey! How are you doing?

-How are you?

-I'm all right, thank you.

0:32:250:32:30

-Good to see you. Welcome to America.

-Thank you.

0:32:300:32:33

From the outset, Tyler's background

0:32:330:32:35

and sexuality have been subjects he's been happy to share.

0:32:350:32:39

Hey, everyone. My name is Tyler Oakley and this is my life.

0:32:390:32:42

My parents were divorced when I was a toddler,

0:32:420:32:44

so I've always had two families.

0:32:440:32:46

Between my sisters and my stepbrothers and my stepsisters

0:32:460:32:49

and my half-brother and my in-laws, I have 12 siblings total.

0:32:490:32:52

When I was 14, a freshman in high school,

0:32:520:32:54

I decided to tell everybody the truth about who I was.

0:32:540:32:57

Although some family was not supportive of me being openly gay,

0:32:570:33:01

I was lucky enough to have so many friends and family that were.

0:33:010:33:04

Tyler vlogs about popular culture and more serious social comment,

0:33:040:33:08

regularly using his fame to promote LGBT causes.

0:33:080:33:12

To me, National Coming Out Day signifies a moment where we can

0:33:120:33:15

take some time to appreciate the courage and the braveness that

0:33:150:33:19

it takes to truly be yourself, no matter what yourself may be.

0:33:190:33:23

Now, alongside vlogging, Tyler has his own documentary,

0:33:230:33:27

he's on network TV

0:33:270:33:28

and he's even advising on health policy in the White House.

0:33:280:33:32

But he's not your traditional megastar.

0:33:320:33:35

Tyler chooses to live without any of the usual trappings of fame.

0:33:350:33:39

Do you want tea? Erm... Oh, this looks English.

0:33:390:33:43

That'll do. Yeah, great. You put the teabag in...

0:33:430:33:46

Oh, my God, you've literally not even opened this, have you?

0:33:460:33:49

-Why would I...? I'm not British.

-I made you tea once.

0:33:490:33:52

-Oh, yeah, you don't make good tea.

-It's loose-leaf tea.

0:33:520:33:54

-Have you got like a strainer?

-No.

-No, I didn't think so.

0:33:540:33:58

-I'll have water, please.

-You want water?

-Yeah, that'll be great.

0:33:580:34:01

-I'm going to get you a bottle of water. I can do that.

-I'll put this back.

0:34:010:34:04

I think you are probably the most influential gay guy

0:34:050:34:12

-probably on the internet.

-Maybe. OK.

0:34:120:34:14

-Which I think is fair to say.

-Sure. OK.

0:34:140:34:16

I'm assuming it didn't happen on purpose. You didn't expect this would be a thing.

0:34:160:34:19

I never wanted to be some type of role model, or something, or you know.

0:34:190:34:23

It's a missed opportunity if you don't consider that you might be

0:34:230:34:26

a role model for somebody, or you might help somebody

0:34:260:34:29

feel less alone in the world.

0:34:290:34:30

It's a missed opportunity if you don't realise that.

0:34:300:34:33

When you were growing up, did you have any gay icons that you

0:34:330:34:37

kind of aspired to be like?

0:34:370:34:38

Nobody that I really, like, I guess, connected with or saw myself in,

0:34:380:34:43

and I think that's because, I guess, traditional media is very much

0:34:430:34:47

a gatekeeper of who you can see

0:34:470:34:49

and the type of people you can connect with in media.

0:34:490:34:53

Now, with YouTube, anybody that wants to have their voice

0:34:530:34:57

be heard, at least now has a platform and...

0:34:570:35:00

that didn't really exist before without going through

0:35:000:35:03

a casting process and now it's like the consumer is casting themselves.

0:35:030:35:09

Let me tell you, when I was younger, I was obsessed with

0:35:090:35:11

Chris O'Donnell in the Batman movies when he played Robin.

0:35:110:35:14

I was, like, in love. I was nine years old

0:35:140:35:17

and I was, like, "Oh, my God! I'm gayer than shit!"

0:35:170:35:20

Coming to his modest apartment, it was clear that personal wealth

0:35:200:35:24

doesn't motivate Tyler, so I wanted to know what does.

0:35:240:35:27

What drives you to work as hard as you do?

0:35:270:35:32

I don't know. I mean, I... I...

0:35:320:35:36

want to do well, I guess? You're making me, like, question it all.

0:35:360:35:41

I think I make stuff also to figure out family stuff or identity stuff.

0:35:410:35:46

I can see myself working through it over the years,

0:35:460:35:49

you know what I mean? Obviously, I'm still halfway through.

0:35:490:35:52

Do you think it's kind of therapy?

0:35:520:35:56

I think, given anybody's upbringing,

0:35:560:35:58

whether it's good or bad, or difficult or relatively easy,

0:35:580:36:02

or if you come from privilege or not, whatever,

0:36:020:36:05

everybody wants to be seen and heard and, like, understood and gotten.

0:36:050:36:10

So when I make a video, even if it's stupid,

0:36:100:36:14

even if it's, like, trivial...

0:36:140:36:17

I think the basis of anybody making content

0:36:170:36:19

and sharing it is wanting the other person on the receiving end

0:36:190:36:23

to be like, "I get you, I see you.

0:36:230:36:26

"Like, I get what you're trying to do."

0:36:260:36:28

-So yeah, for me, it's like, feeling like people get me.

-Mm-hm.

-Yeah.

0:36:280:36:34

Tyler is clearly very, very driven

0:36:360:36:38

and what I found fascinating is that when I asked him, he put his

0:36:380:36:42

motivation down to a need that we all have to be heard and understood.

0:36:420:36:49

And, actually, the internet is the perfect place for this

0:36:490:36:51

because anybody can upload anything and I think that's why more

0:36:510:36:54

and more people are turning to vlogging - to understand

0:36:540:36:58

others and also be understood themselves.

0:36:580:37:01

Tyler has always used vlogging to be open about himself,

0:37:040:37:07

but for others it hasn't been as simple.

0:37:070:37:09

The fear of losing acceptance, viewers and popularity

0:37:110:37:14

can mean that famous vloggers take a long time to

0:37:140:37:17

admit to their audience who they really are.

0:37:170:37:20

-Hello. How are you doing?

-I'm great. How are you?

0:37:200:37:23

-Very well. Good to see you.

-Good to see you!

0:37:230:37:26

-What a place!

-Welcome!

0:37:260:37:28

I'm visiting my friend Ingrid Nilsen who recently surprised me

0:37:280:37:32

and 4.5 million of her subscribers by making an announcement.

0:37:320:37:36

-I haven't watched it since I posted it.

-Let's watch it together.

0:37:360:37:40

Oh, my God.

0:37:400:37:41

So I am sitting here today because I care about you guys.

0:37:410:37:45

You have been a part of my life for the past, you know, almost six years

0:37:450:37:50

and this is a really big part of my life.

0:37:500:37:55

Ingrid's videos normally focus on fashion and beauty tips,

0:37:550:37:59

and with an average video getting half a million views,

0:37:590:38:03

she's a well established beauty and lifestyle vlogger,

0:38:030:38:06

but her biggest video was seen an incredible 13 million times.

0:38:060:38:11

This was...something that was really difficult to do,

0:38:110:38:17

but also something I desperately...

0:38:170:38:20

-What?

-I'm coming closer. Let's watch it.

0:38:200:38:24

Erm, I guess I am just going to get right to it.

0:38:240:38:31

Erm...there is something that I want you to know.

0:38:310:38:37

And...that something is...

0:38:390:38:43

..I'm gay.

0:38:440:38:46

How does it feel going back to it now?

0:38:460:38:48

It's a really emotional experience, because seeing myself here,

0:38:480:38:53

it's like this is somebody that I used to know.

0:38:530:38:58

The last time I watched this video I was in a really different place

0:38:580:39:02

and to just think about now being on the other side of all of that,

0:39:020:39:08

it's just...

0:39:080:39:09

I'm proud of who I am and I'm not going to apologise.

0:39:090:39:17

It feels so incredible to feel like now I have this deeper relationship

0:39:170:39:24

with not only the people in my life, but with my community as well.

0:39:240:39:29

Ingrid's coming-out video revealing herself at her most vulnerable

0:39:300:39:34

provoked a particularly strong response from viewers.

0:39:340:39:38

So do you think you coming out online has been

0:39:400:39:43

kind of like a reciprocal,

0:39:430:39:44

two-way sort of conversation with your audience?

0:39:440:39:48

Yeah, definitely.

0:39:480:39:49

I feel closer to all of them than I ever have,

0:39:490:39:55

because I think what happens when you accept

0:39:550:40:00

something like this that is an important part of your life

0:40:000:40:04

and then choose to share it with people,

0:40:040:40:08

you break down these walls and because you're giving

0:40:080:40:12

more of yourself, you in turn get more back.

0:40:120:40:17

After uploading the video,

0:40:170:40:19

Ingrid's channel was flooded with supportive comments.

0:40:190:40:22

But it's only when you meet people face-to-face that you fully

0:40:220:40:25

realise how it's making a difference.

0:40:250:40:29

Jess, Mel and Cat are volunteers for the Los Angeles LGBT centre.

0:40:290:40:34

-Hi!

-Hello!

-Hello, everyone. Good afternoon.

0:40:340:40:39

I'm really excited about this,

0:40:390:40:40

because to be able to talk with a small, intimate group of people

0:40:400:40:45

is something that I don't get to do that much.

0:40:450:40:48

What's weird is like I kind of feel like I already know you,

0:40:480:40:52

seeing everything from like the past few years

0:40:520:40:54

and doing a vlog every day.

0:40:540:40:56

We've played your coming-out video in our youth space

0:40:560:41:00

and we all watched it.

0:41:000:41:02

So do you think that vlogging now is kind of a way for people to be

0:41:020:41:06

diverse and also have access to people that they identify with too?

0:41:060:41:10

What I really like about vlogging is that it's having people who

0:41:100:41:14

watch, like, your videos, for example,

0:41:140:41:17

for beauty tips and then you come out and they're like,

0:41:170:41:20

"Whoa! I've never met a gay person in my life."

0:41:200:41:23

You're giving them an access point to a community they may

0:41:230:41:26

otherwise not know anything about and I think that's really awesome.

0:41:260:41:30

So when I saw you come out, it just made me

0:41:300:41:32

really happy to see not only that you are part of the beauty

0:41:320:41:36

and lifestyle community,

0:41:360:41:38

it's just like to see more of LGBT representation.

0:41:380:41:41

If I had seen that when I was younger,

0:41:410:41:43

it probably would've changed so much for me.

0:41:430:41:46

I think it's awesome, because it's a medium you can be real and be vulnerable.

0:41:460:41:51

Like, you can have your beauty ones, but then you can also have one where

0:41:510:41:55

you come out, or you talk about what's going on in your life

0:41:550:41:57

and I think that everything in between, it's OK,

0:41:570:42:00

you're brave enough to put that on camera

0:42:000:42:02

and you're showing kids that they can be that brave.

0:42:020:42:06

Being able to see everyone flourish on YouTube and

0:42:060:42:09

it's so accessible for someone, like, that helped me a lot.

0:42:090:42:13

It's like, right now I don't have my family on my side.

0:42:130:42:16

It's like really sucky, but I can turn on YouTube and it's like,

0:42:160:42:21

people are putting... Sorry.

0:42:210:42:24

Are there napkins? No?

0:42:260:42:28

Oh. There we go.

0:42:280:42:30

I feel like I find someone to identify with and be like,

0:42:300:42:34

"I'm not alone in this."

0:42:340:42:35

We're taking steps and we're getting there

0:42:350:42:38

and kids and future generations aren't even going to have to think

0:42:380:42:42

about the things that we've had to think about and that's so amazing.

0:42:420:42:46

I feel really privileged to have been part of that conversation.

0:42:470:42:51

I think on a friendship, personal note with Ingrid,

0:42:510:42:54

I'm really proud of the video she's made.

0:42:540:42:57

The fact that she was open and honest

0:42:570:43:00

and brave enough to put it out there on the internet and millions

0:43:000:43:02

of people have seen it is something that I think is to be commended.

0:43:020:43:06

Vlogging allows for a new kind of relationship

0:43:100:43:14

between those on screen and those watching.

0:43:140:43:17

For fans, able to communicate directly with their idols,

0:43:170:43:20

it can feel intense.

0:43:200:43:22

But this illusion of closeness is also open to abuse.

0:43:220:43:26

It's causing concern amongst high-profile vloggers.

0:43:260:43:30

We've seen examples of guys not understanding

0:43:300:43:33

the level of responsibility and the risk involved in that.

0:43:330:43:37

When there's people who are emotionally connecting with you

0:43:370:43:40

on such a high level, then you basically have the power to

0:43:400:43:42

manipulate them and it can get really ugly.

0:43:420:43:45

Hi, everybody!

0:43:460:43:48

Mike Lombardo was a successful musician and YouTube star.

0:43:480:43:51

One fan, allegedly manipulated by him,

0:43:530:43:55

turned to vlogging to highlight her negative experience.

0:43:550:43:58

In 2011, when I had just turned 15 years old,

0:43:580:44:03

Mike Lombardo very suddenly took an interest in me.

0:44:030:44:06

So he texted me and immediately, right off the bat, he was just being

0:44:060:44:11

very aggressive and kept trying to bring the conversation back to sex.

0:44:110:44:16

He asked me for nudes and offered to send me some of his.

0:44:160:44:20

Mike Lombardo was convicted on child pornography charges

0:44:200:44:23

and sentenced to five years in prison.

0:44:230:44:26

And there have been other accusations of vloggers

0:44:260:44:29

abusing their celebrity status.

0:44:290:44:31

I went to a meeting group of a very popular YouTuber.

0:44:310:44:34

After the meeting group it became apparent that the YouTuber was

0:44:340:44:37

attracted to me and asked me to go to the cinema the next day.

0:44:370:44:40

Later on in the film he tried to put his hands on and near various parts

0:44:400:44:43

of my body that I wasn't comfortable with, so I moved them away.

0:44:430:44:47

He then tried to move my hands onto different parts of his body.

0:44:470:44:50

I was taken advantage of, both as a minor and as a fan.

0:44:500:44:53

The person I had this experience with was Sam Pepper

0:44:530:44:57

and whilst I haven't let it

0:44:570:44:58

define me, and I don't want it to

0:44:580:45:00

define me as a person online,

0:45:000:45:02

it's become evident from his recent

0:45:020:45:04

videos that he hasn't changed.

0:45:040:45:06

So today I'm going to see how open

0:45:100:45:12

people are about making out with me.

0:45:120:45:15

He's made a name for himself by posting contentious videos.

0:45:160:45:21

And increasingly other vloggers are targeting members of the public

0:45:230:45:27

with dubious exploits, looking to increase their viewing figures.

0:45:270:45:31

But there is a reaction against this behaviour.

0:45:330:45:35

At the end of the day, regardless

0:45:350:45:37

of what you call it, a prank,

0:45:370:45:39

an experiment, awareness raising,

0:45:390:45:41

when you touch someone without consent,

0:45:410:45:44

when you force them to be sexual with you, when you pressure

0:45:440:45:46

them on camera like that, that is harassment, violation, assault.

0:45:460:45:50

Laci Green is a prominent sex-education activist

0:45:500:45:54

with her own YouTube channels and MTV series.

0:45:540:45:57

Masturbation, self-pleasure is actually totally normal.

0:45:570:46:00

Do you know what I find kind of weird?

0:46:000:46:02

The idea of a single sex talk.

0:46:020:46:05

Done!

0:46:050:46:07

'I've come to Venice Beach,

0:46:100:46:12

'where Sam Pepper made his kissing video, to meet Laci.

0:46:120:46:15

'I wanted to talk to her about her fight against the growing

0:46:160:46:20

'problem of sexual harassment as entertainment.'

0:46:200:46:23

This is the video I think which caused most controversy.

0:46:240:46:27

Today I'm going to be pinching girls' bums with my secret hand.

0:46:270:46:32

Do you know where the Apple Store is?

0:46:320:46:34

-Like... I don't know if it's that way.

-I don't know.

0:46:340:46:36

I'm not really from here.

0:46:360:46:38

You can see the woman in these shots are quite uncomfortable.

0:46:410:46:44

What the fuck was that?!

0:46:440:46:46

I think that little old lady pinched your bum. Anyway, nice to meet you.

0:46:460:46:49

There's no way that I could have ignored this.

0:46:540:46:56

It was blaring, it was right in front of me.

0:46:560:46:58

It's in my own community, it's in my own home.

0:46:580:47:01

Here's the bottom line, this is disgusting, this is wrong

0:47:010:47:03

and it needs to stop.

0:47:030:47:05

Sam Pepper and anyone who behaves like Sam Pepper needs

0:47:050:47:08

to be held accountable.

0:47:080:47:10

OK, so a bit further down there and then...

0:47:100:47:12

-Are you touching my butt?!

-I would not do that. Come on!

0:47:140:47:17

What's interesting is that there's an advert before this,

0:47:170:47:20

-so this generated a lot of revenue.

-Yeah.

0:47:200:47:23

And people are definitely able to make a lot of money doing

0:47:230:47:26

this sort of thing.

0:47:260:47:27

For me, what's most upsetting about this is the message that it's

0:47:270:47:32

sending to so many young people,

0:47:320:47:34

that this is a normal, acceptable thing.

0:47:340:47:37

But there's still a lot of people like, you know,

0:47:370:47:39

imitators of Sam Pepper, who do the same exact thing

0:47:390:47:41

and there's really no accountability.

0:47:410:47:44

I like your boobs.

0:47:440:47:46

-My boobs?

-Marry me.

0:47:460:47:49

I donated my clothes to charity.

0:47:490:47:51

When this sort of stuff happens,

0:47:530:47:54

-if you see it going on, say something about it.

-Mm-hm.

0:47:540:47:57

This is an ongoing issue for me, is that I'm expected to say

0:47:570:48:00

something about every single thing that's on there. I'm the only one.

0:48:000:48:03

You know, I get e-mails all the time, "I've found this, I've found that."

0:48:030:48:06

"I can't believe that this is on YouTube."

0:48:060:48:08

"I can't believe this has as many views." And I'm alone.

0:48:080:48:10

It's like, where is everyone else?

0:48:100:48:12

Why aren't people talking about this?

0:48:120:48:14

It's not entirely surprising that we see real-world behaviours,

0:48:140:48:18

real-world problems, bleeding in onto the platform.

0:48:180:48:21

-But we have a real opportunity to change that.

-Yeah.

0:48:210:48:23

We have a real opportunity to make it a better place

0:48:230:48:25

and we're figuring it out.

0:48:250:48:27

And I think we need to keep pushing that forward

0:48:270:48:29

and having that conversation.

0:48:290:48:31

'And vloggers are beginning to speak out.'

0:48:310:48:33

I think recently people have been taking

0:48:330:48:35

fan-created relationship dynamics more seriously.

0:48:350:48:38

That's something that's really great.

0:48:380:48:39

I do think people like YouTube, they aren't just a platform,

0:48:390:48:42

they are trying to foster a community. So they need to take

0:48:420:48:44

responsibility for what happens within that community.

0:48:440:48:47

So with people like Laci who are not only stepping up

0:48:470:48:51

and being a voice but also saying,

0:48:510:48:55

"Hey, I don't need to be the only one here."

0:48:550:48:58

"Let's all speak up."

0:48:580:49:00

The best thing that other YouTubers can do in the event of other

0:49:000:49:03

people being awful, is to educate their audiences.

0:49:030:49:07

As the reach and power of vlogging grows ever bigger,

0:49:090:49:11

brands are desperate to exploit its influence.

0:49:110:49:15

This can be extremely lucrative for prominent social-media stars.

0:49:150:49:20

We've been working with EE for something very cool.

0:49:200:49:23

Tommy Hilfiger invited me to come to their New York Fashion Week show.

0:49:230:49:28

I wanted to show you a few items from the Body Shop's

0:49:280:49:31

Vitamin E range.

0:49:310:49:33

It's my own personal Krave. KSI's Krave!

0:49:330:49:36

So sometimes these people start, let's call it, relatively

0:49:360:49:39

innocently in talking about something that they're passionate

0:49:390:49:42

about and then slowly that changes into something

0:49:420:49:44

that they realise is marketable.

0:49:440:49:47

Because there are people out there who are interested in their

0:49:470:49:49

expertise and experiences and they can associate that with products.

0:49:490:49:52

But it's not just merchandise they're advertising.

0:49:520:49:55

Vloggers are selling their lifestyles, too.

0:49:550:49:58

And being your own brand can create its own pressure.

0:49:580:50:01

I have an insight into a world of social media that I believe not

0:50:010:50:05

many people are aware of in terms of how it works in advertisements.

0:50:050:50:09

I know a lot of other social-media personalities

0:50:090:50:12

and just how fake it all is.

0:50:120:50:15

Essena O'Neill was a teenage model and Instagram star,

0:50:150:50:19

who recently quit all forms of social media.

0:50:190:50:21

I had the dream life.

0:50:210:50:24

I had half a million people interested in me

0:50:240:50:25

on social media... On Instagram, sorry.

0:50:250:50:28

I had over 100,000 views on most of my videos on YouTube.

0:50:280:50:31

To a lot of people, I'd made it.

0:50:310:50:33

Everything I was doing was edited and contrived

0:50:330:50:36

and to get more value, and to get more views.

0:50:360:50:40

And then here at nearly 19, with all of these followers,

0:50:400:50:44

I don't even know what is real or what is not

0:50:440:50:47

because I have let myself be defined by something that is so not real.

0:50:470:50:51

But there are people who choose to share their lives online,

0:50:510:50:55

whose content is very real indeed.

0:50:550:50:58

I've been making plans for my suicide.

0:50:580:51:02

And, as a result,

0:51:040:51:08

I'm going back into hospital.

0:51:080:51:10

'Jonny Benjamin's vlogs are some of the most honest

0:51:110:51:14

'and raw I have ever seen.

0:51:140:51:16

'For Jonny, vlogging is a matter of life and death.

0:51:160:51:21

'A few years ago he had to be talked out of taking his own life.'

0:51:210:51:25

The point of this video is to...

0:51:250:51:27

First of all, if you're having suicidal thoughts

0:51:300:51:34

and feelings, to let you know that it's OK.

0:51:340:51:39

It's more normal than you think.

0:51:390:51:40

'Sharing his recovery online has become an essential

0:51:400:51:43

'part of his battle against the stigma of mental illness.'

0:51:430:51:48

Vlogging built up my confidence to go out there

0:51:480:51:50

and talk about mental health.

0:51:500:51:52

And it was through talking to other people online,

0:51:520:51:55

through my YouTube channel, that people were telling me

0:51:550:51:58

that they'd had bad experiences with the mental-health system.

0:51:580:52:01

That's what got me campaigning.

0:52:010:52:03

I was like, we need to make a difference here, you know?

0:52:030:52:06

'Now Jonny is a prominent mental-health campaigner.

0:52:060:52:09

'He lobbies politicians, he makes documentaries and he's convinced

0:52:090:52:12

'that recording and sharing his struggles

0:52:120:52:14

'has a powerful impact on others.'

0:52:140:52:17

I've had people message me to say that they've watched my stuff and

0:52:180:52:21

it's stopped them from taking their lives or they've gone and got help.

0:52:210:52:26

Do you think there's any danger maybe

0:52:260:52:28

in individuals turning to individuals like you

0:52:280:52:31

because obviously you're not...

0:52:310:52:34

you're not a professional?

0:52:340:52:36

I guess there's always a risk but then...

0:52:360:52:38

You know, I've had people message me

0:52:380:52:40

and that's the first time they've ever opened up

0:52:400:52:42

about their mental health.

0:52:420:52:44

And also I can tell them, from personal experience, it gets better.

0:52:440:52:47

When you're in that dark place,

0:52:470:52:48

just knowing that someone else has been in that place

0:52:480:52:51

and has got better, it can make all the difference.

0:52:510:52:55

'Jonny's campaigning is changing attitudes online.

0:52:560:52:59

'And he uses his experience to spread the word about the potential

0:52:590:53:02

'benefits of vlogging.'

0:53:020:53:04

Today he's holding a workshop for other people

0:53:040:53:07

who are passionate about changing attitudes to mental health.

0:53:070:53:11

It was easier to talk to the camera, which was, kind of,

0:53:110:53:14

non-judgmental, you know? It was just there.

0:53:140:53:17

I could say anything to it and I knew I wouldn't be judged.

0:53:170:53:20

So I called it my Recoverlogs.

0:53:200:53:23

It's just a horrible existence to

0:53:230:53:27

just constantly struggle.

0:53:270:53:31

The worst thing of all is doing it in silence.

0:53:310:53:35

Even watching that, I can feel the power emanating from it.

0:53:350:53:38

In that room there's seven other people

0:53:380:53:41

who it will mean a lot more to than me.

0:53:410:53:44

And that's a room in London. Imagine that across the entire globe.

0:53:440:53:47

It's just really incredible.

0:53:470:53:49

Again, it always comes up, I was basically told I need to love myself

0:53:490:53:53

and accept myself. And...

0:53:530:53:55

I need to do that now.

0:53:570:53:58

It's kind of good to see...

0:53:580:54:01

I don't know if any of you keep journals or blogs or things

0:54:010:54:04

but it's kind of nice to look back, when you've been through

0:54:040:54:06

a bad period and just know that you've overcome it.

0:54:060:54:09

We all know keeping it to yourself is just the worst thing possible.

0:54:090:54:13

Having that outlet to share

0:54:130:54:15

and express what's going on up here makes a massive difference.

0:54:150:54:19

For me, that's through vlogging.

0:54:190:54:21

'Jonny's workshop has inspired some of the group to'

0:54:210:54:23

vlog about challenges they've faced themselves.

0:54:230:54:27

Just to warn you, this camera is much bigger than

0:54:270:54:29

anything I ever use.

0:54:290:54:30

So if you can do it in front of this,

0:54:300:54:32

you can do it in front of anything.

0:54:320:54:33

Yeah, my first vlog. It's actually quite a nerve-racking thing to do.

0:54:330:54:38

To be honest, I'm shitting myself at being a mum

0:54:380:54:42

with an existing mental-health problem.

0:54:420:54:45

In 2011 I just couldn't cope any more and so tried

0:54:450:54:50

to end my life.

0:54:500:54:52

I found it lovely. I really, really enjoyed it today.

0:54:520:54:55

I definitely want to do another one.

0:54:550:54:58

Very, sort of, nerve-racking and...

0:54:580:55:00

Yeah, but it was good.

0:55:000:55:02

And it's hopefully, sort of...

0:55:020:55:03

Also talking about it will hopefully help other people

0:55:030:55:07

with mental-health problems to ask for help.

0:55:070:55:10

There's a whole world of people out there that vlogging can reach too.

0:55:100:55:13

I think it definitely is the way forward.

0:55:130:55:15

Weird, I found it easy to listen to that because I, kind of,

0:55:150:55:20

relate to, on a very small level,

0:55:200:55:22

because obviously I don't have those experiences...

0:55:220:55:25

But I know what vlogging is like and how it feels to do it.

0:55:250:55:30

It's kind of really hard to put myself in that situation.

0:55:300:55:33

But I know on my level I find talking things through

0:55:330:55:36

really helpful.

0:55:360:55:39

I think having individuals be the voice for other individuals,

0:55:390:55:43

you know, and other people listening

0:55:430:55:45

I think is genuinely changing the way

0:55:450:55:47

people can see the world.

0:55:470:55:49

I think for the next generation, the people who are watching

0:55:490:55:51

and the people who will be creating content soon,

0:55:510:55:54

I think it's actually a really positive outlook.

0:55:540:55:57

Vlogging can make us laugh and it can make us cry.

0:56:010:56:05

-Just too overwhelming.

-It has the power to change minds.

0:56:050:56:09

Right now we have an opportunity to fucking change the world.
