CHEERING

0:04:480:04:52

I know you know the words to this one. It's a popular song

0:04:520:04:55

for many artists out there. This is one of the first songs I recorded

0:04:550:04:58

that really made a big difference for me.

0:04:580:05:00

And give these lovely backing singers, give them a massive round

0:05:000:05:04

of applause out there tonight, cos they're awesome. This whole band!

0:05:040:05:07

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:05:070:05:10

# You know I like my chicken fried

0:05:100:05:12

# And cold beer on a Friday night

0:05:120:05:15

# A pair of jeans that fit just right

0:05:150:05:18

# And the radio up... #

0:05:180:05:22

Whoo!

0:05:230:05:24

Are you ready to party tonight?!

0:05:250:05:26

All right!

0:05:290:05:30

# Well, I was raised up beneath the shade of a Georgia pine

0:05:310:05:35

# And that's home, you know

0:05:350:05:37

# Sweet tea, pecan pie and home-made wine

0:05:370:05:40

# Where the peaches grow

0:05:400:05:42

# And my house It's not much to talk about

0:05:420:05:45

# But it's filled with the love that's grown in a Southern ground

0:05:470:05:50

# And a little bit of chicken fried

0:05:510:05:54

# Cold beer on a Friday night

0:05:540:05:57

# A pair of jeans that fit just right

0:05:570:05:59

# And the radio up

0:05:590:06:02

# I see the sun rise

0:06:020:06:05

# See the love in my woman's eyes

0:06:050:06:07

# Feel the touch of a precious child

0:06:070:06:10

# And know a mother's love

0:06:100:06:13

# It's funny how it's the little things in life

0:06:130:06:17

# That mean the most

0:06:170:06:18

# Not where you live or what you drive

0:06:180:06:21

# Or the price tag on your clothes

0:06:210:06:23

# There's no dollar sign on a peace of mind

0:06:230:06:26

# This I've come to know

0:06:260:06:29

# So, if you agree Have a drink with me

0:06:290:06:31

# Raise your glasses for a toast

0:06:310:06:33

# To a little bit of chicken fried

0:06:330:06:36

# And cold beer on a Friday night

0:06:360:06:38

# A pair of jeans that fit just right

0:06:380:06:41

# And the radio up

0:06:410:06:43

# I see the sun rise

0:06:430:06:46

# See the love in my woman's eyes

0:06:460:06:49

# Feel the touch of a precious child

0:06:490:06:51

# And know a mother's love... #

0:06:510:06:54

Here comes Damien. Oh, yeah!

0:06:540:06:55

# I thank God for my life

0:07:150:07:17

# And for the Stars and Stripes

0:07:170:07:20

# May freedom forever fly

0:07:200:07:22

# So, let it ring

0:07:220:07:25

# Salute the ones who died

0:07:250:07:27

# And the ones that give their lives

0:07:270:07:30

# So we don't have to sacrifice

0:07:300:07:33

# All the things we love

0:07:330:07:35

# Like our chicken fried

0:07:350:07:38

# And cold beer on a Friday night

0:07:380:07:40

# A pair of jeans that fit just right

0:07:400:07:43

# And the radio up

0:07:430:07:46

# A little bit of chicken fried... # Let me hear!

0:07:460:07:49

# And cold beer on a Friday night

0:07:490:07:51

# A pair of jeans that fit just right... #

0:07:510:07:53

You can sing louder than that! Let me see those hands! Come on!

0:07:530:07:56

# Just a little bit of chicken fried

0:07:560:07:59

# And cold beer on a Friday night

0:07:590:08:01

# A pair of jeans that fit just right... #

0:08:010:08:03

That's it!

0:08:030:08:04

# And the radio up

0:08:040:08:07

# I see the sun rise

0:08:070:08:08

# See the love in my woman's eyes

0:08:080:08:12

# Feel the touch of a precious child

0:08:120:08:14

# And know a mother's love... #

0:08:140:08:17

All right!

0:08:170:08:18

CHEERING

0:08:230:08:26

-DANIEL:

-Johnny Brady!

0:08:260:08:29

A-ha! You boy, ya! Well done!

0:08:290:08:31

How's it going, Daniel? Are you well?

0:08:310:08:34

-Fantastic.

-It's great to be here tonight.

0:08:340:08:36

Isn't he fantastic?

0:08:360:08:37

CHEERING

0:08:370:08:39

Great to have you here.

0:08:390:08:40

# Give her all the dreams that she wished for... #

0:08:480:08:51

It was really my uncle Peter and my uncle Paddy

0:09:040:09:06

who really started it off.

0:09:060:09:08

'By the time I was 15, they started me singing.

0:09:080:09:10

'I was playing rhythm and singing with them in the band.'

0:09:100:09:13

They were a two-piece and became a three-piece, with me in it,

0:09:130:09:16

-and I've never looked back since.

-He was more interested in singing

0:09:160:09:19

than he was playing. So, from then, it progressed on. I ended up,

0:09:190:09:22

I was hardly singing at all. He sung everything.

0:09:220:09:25

In '92, I think, I started working there.

0:09:400:09:43

I was only 16 and I started in there as a lifeguard.

0:09:430:09:45

I had to deal with people, and it's probably a great thing

0:09:450:09:48

why I'm good with people now as well,

0:09:480:09:49

'because I was teaching swimming to young kids and adults,'

0:09:490:09:53

sometimes one-on-one with people.

0:09:530:09:56

So, that was a great experience for me.

0:09:560:09:58

# Down by the river... #

0:10:060:10:08

'People are out for a night out. They're out to enjoy themselves

0:10:080:10:11

'and I believe that, if I'm energetic on stage,

0:10:110:10:14

'then the people down on the dance floor are going,

0:10:140:10:17

'"This guy is really enjoying himself,

0:10:170:10:19

'"so I am going to enjoy myself."'

0:10:190:10:20

# Oh, down by the river. #

0:10:200:10:22

Look at my eyes, for a second.

0:10:250:10:27

Me and Toni and the kids always love to spend lots of family time.

0:10:290:10:33

We try to spend as much family time together as possible. Time off.

0:10:330:10:36

It's my most favourite thing to do.

0:10:360:10:39

# I'd take my money and the clothes on my back... #

0:10:390:10:44

Anything can inspire me to write a song,

0:10:440:10:46

but some days I can write a song,

0:10:460:10:48

and some days I might not write anything for maybe a week or two,

0:10:480:10:52

but I'm always thinking about songs, all the time.

0:10:520:10:54

And learning songs gives you ideas

0:10:540:10:56

and watching different people and hearing other people write

0:10:560:10:59

and working with other people always gives me ideas, you know.

0:10:590:11:01

'I have just recorded a song with a great Nashville writer,

0:11:160:11:18

'a guy called Max T Barnes, who is the son'

0:11:180:11:20

of a guy called Max D Barnes.

0:11:200:11:22

Between those guys, they have written 33 number ones,

0:11:220:11:25

so we just recorded a song called The Craic, it's called.

0:11:250:11:28

It's been recorded in Nashville. Dolly Parton's band played on it.

0:11:280:11:31

It's huge for me. It's a dream come true.

0:11:310:11:34

Now, musically, you cover a lot of different types of styles.

0:11:440:11:48

Tell us a wee bit about the stage show you were in some time ago.

0:11:480:11:53

Well, I started out in country music, like I say, with my uncles and stuff,

0:11:530:11:56

and, at that time in the '90s,

0:11:560:11:58

Oasis and all these other bands were kind of cool,

0:11:580:12:00

so I got into doing sort of indie and rock and pop

0:12:000:12:03

and then, by the time I got to the 2000s, I was singing rock

0:12:030:12:06

and I did a stage show with long hair

0:12:060:12:11

and all that kind of stuff,

0:12:110:12:12

wearing a bit of eye-liner and all that.

0:12:120:12:14

It was great fun at the time.

0:12:140:12:16

And I'm a great fan of old rock'n'roll

0:12:160:12:18

and all that kind of thing, so I really, really enjoyed it.

0:12:180:12:21

Then, eventually, came back to my roots, back to country,

0:12:210:12:23

and it's a great thing to be in right now, at the moment,

0:12:230:12:26

with all these young dancers and people out hearing country music.

0:12:260:12:29

We're certainly glad you came back to the country, aren't we?

0:12:290:12:32

CHEERING

0:12:320:12:34

Now, Johnny, you did something that not a lot of us can say -

0:12:340:12:37

you jumped out of a plane with Sharon Shannon.

0:12:370:12:40

I did. I did. I am a huge...

0:12:400:12:43

I've got two Jack Russells at home

0:12:430:12:45

and I'm a huge fan of animals. And this was for AHAR,

0:12:450:12:48

I think it's actually called. And it was a great charity

0:12:480:12:51

for cruelty to animals and stuff like that.

0:12:510:12:53

I was asked to do it and I had never done it before.

0:12:530:12:56

I love doing energy-rush things, so I gave it a go and...

0:12:560:13:00

We would never have guessed(!)

0:13:000:13:02

LAUGHTER

0:13:020:13:04

So, I gave it a go, It was pretty scary at the time.

0:13:040:13:07

No, I really loved it and, who knows, maybe Shannon would have me back

0:13:070:13:10

and we will do it again some time. It was awesome.

0:13:100:13:13

# We're going out for the craic

0:13:190:13:21

# Guitar on my back Gonna sing and dance all night

0:13:540:13:58

0:14:000:14:03

0:14:250:14:28

0:14:280:14:31

# Well, last Saturday night I went out for a pint

0:14:400:14:43

# A good time was had by all

0:14:430:14:45

# And the band played songs and we sang along

0:14:460:14:48

# Right up until last call

0:14:480:14:51

# Then the girls of our dreams Gave her number to me

0:15:540:15:59

# Again... #

0:15:590:16:02

CHEERING

0:16:090:16:10

This is a big task for you, I tell you, to teach me.

0:18:310:18:33

It's a simple little love song,

0:18:330:18:35

and I picked it because I thought that it would marry the two worlds,

0:18:350:18:39

between your kind of style and...

0:18:390:18:41

-The country and the sort of trad world, as such?

-Yeah. Yeah.

0:18:410:18:44

# Do shiulfainn fein i

0:18:450:18:48

# Gconai leat

0:18:480:18:50

# Eibhlin a Ruin... #

0:18:500:18:56

'You know, it's just a really simple love song.'

0:18:580:19:00

"I will drive the cows, or the calves, with you, Eileen, my love."

0:19:000:19:04

"Do shiulfainn fein i gconai leat, Eibhlin a Ruin." -

0:19:040:19:08

"With the hope that I would, one day, be in a marriage with you."

0:19:080:19:10

That's maybe a thing they did back in the olden days, is it?

0:19:100:19:13

-Yeah!

-I'm not sure.

-Nobody bothers getting married these days!

0:19:130:19:16

I don't know if I asked my wife Toni if I would drive the cows for her,

0:19:160:19:19

whether she would be happy or not. She maybe would be!

0:19:190:19:21

TOGETHER: # Gconai leat

0:19:390:19:42

# Eibhlin a Ruin. #

0:19:430:19:49

Beautiful. You have it!

0:19:490:19:51

It gives me great pleasure

0:19:520:19:53

to welcome a very talented young singer here tonight

0:19:530:19:55

and I'm delighted to be singing with her.

0:19:550:19:57

Miss Pauline Scanlon.

0:19:570:19:59

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:19:590:20:02

# Do shiulfainn fein i

0:20:170:20:20

# Gconai leat

0:20:200:20:23

# Eibhlin a Ruin

0:20:230:20:30

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Thank you so much.

Right, left, right.

0:43:360:43:38

Left, right, left.

0:43:380:43:40

Good, we'll get it going to a sound

0:43:400:43:42

to get you back into that swing of things.

0:43:420:43:44

Left, right, left. Super.

0:44:270:44:29

How are you doing, Michilin? Are you well?

0:45:170:45:18

-Hi, Johnny.

-Good to see you. Thanks for coming along.

0:45:180:45:21

-No problem.

-It's lovely to meet you. Thanks for coming.

0:45:210:45:23

Have a wee seat.

0:45:230:45:24

-I've ordered us a coffee, I hope you don't mind.

-Thank you.

0:45:240:45:27

-Is that all right? Do you drink coffee?

-Yeah.

0:45:270:45:28

Where was the first time that you seen myself and the band?

0:45:280:45:31

I think it was at the Mellon, Mellon Country Hotel,

0:45:310:45:33

then at the Allingham.

0:45:330:45:35

I heard that you've translated one of my songs into Irish, is that right?

0:45:350:45:40

Yeah, my favourite song - A Gift From Above.

0:45:400:45:42

I started translating the chorus.

0:45:420:45:45

I think that I could maybe teach you a line.

0:45:450:45:48

I'll try my best. You'll have to treat me

0:45:480:45:50

-like a six-year-old now, that would be the best way to do it.

-One line.

0:45:500:45:54

I'll sing it for you and then we'll try it maybe together, will we?

0:45:540:45:58

-Well, I'll try my best, now.

-Sure, we'll do it slowly.

0:45:580:46:01

That's cool.

0:46:010:46:03

SHE SINGS IN IRISH

0:46:030:46:06

THEY BOTH SING IN IRISH

0:46:060:46:10

-That's not bad.

-That isn't too bad.

-Do I get a high-five for that, do I?

0:46:100:46:13

I reckon you could do that.

0:46:130:46:15

This is a very, very special request for a very, very talented lady

0:46:150:46:18

down there tonight, and a good friend of mine.

0:46:180:46:20

Give me one second.

0:46:200:46:23

She actually translated this song, believe it or not.

0:46:230:46:25

I wrote it in English.

0:46:250:46:26

It's a song that I wrote about family.

0:46:260:46:28

Michilin is there tonight, everybody.

0:46:280:46:31

She's been a great help to me and she's a great fan of country music.

0:46:310:46:34

I'd like you to give her a round of applause down there tonight.

0:46:340:46:36

Thank you so much. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:46:360:46:40

Michilin. This is a song called A Gift From Above.

0:46:400:46:43

Thank you so much.

# I had a plan to marry some day

0:46:550:46:59

# To someone I love

0:46:590:47:02

# In every way

0:47:020:47:04

# To kiss her and hold her

0:47:050:47:07

# To feel the breath on my skin

0:47:070:47:10

# To love her forever

0:47:100:47:12

# To ask for her hand

0:47:120:47:14

# The promise I make her

0:47:180:47:20

# Forever I'll keep

0:47:200:47:22

# I'll stand strong beside you

0:47:220:47:24

# Whatever life brings

0:47:240:47:26

# We'll face things together

0:47:280:47:30

# With peace in our hearts

0:47:300:47:32

# Our love can't be broken

0:47:320:47:34

# Until death do us part

0:47:340:47:38
