Hello and welcome to a special edition of Songs of Praise

0:00:030:00:07

from our home in MediaCity in Salford.

0:00:070:00:10

As we celebrate some of the best musical moments

0:00:100:00:13

and memorable stories from the past year.

0:00:130:00:17

We also have a special performance by West End star Shaun Escoffery.

0:00:170:00:21

We'll discover how one man's faith helped him find forgiveness.

0:00:210:00:25

As soon as I got hold of his hand,

0:00:250:00:28

there was something passed between us.

0:00:280:00:30

I can only say it was the Lord working.

0:00:300:00:33

And after singing Abide With Me in front of 90,000 people

0:00:330:00:37

at the FA Cup Final at Wembley,

0:00:370:00:39

our Fans Choir reunites to relive one of the biggest days of their lives.

0:00:390:00:43

It's good talking to other members that were in the choir

0:00:430:00:46

because I think family and friends back home

0:00:460:00:48

are getting fed up with me going on about it now!

0:00:480:00:50

Of course, as well as our highlights,

0:00:570:01:00

we'll have a rich mix of hymns and worship songs from around the UK.

0:01:000:01:04

And as I'm from Wales, I'm pleased to say we're starting in Cardiff.

0:01:040:01:08

We've had the most incredible year of music

0:03:320:03:35

with nearly 100 special guest performances

0:03:350:03:38

alongside hymns and songs from more

0:03:380:03:40

than 80 churches, cathedrals and worship halls across the UK.

0:03:400:03:46

It's been quite a year.

And from one incredible musical montage to a powerful performance

0:06:120:06:15

of a seasonal favourite

0:06:150:06:17

from West End star Shaun Escoffery.

0:06:170:06:20

# A ray of hope flickers in the sky

0:06:200:06:26

# A tiny star lights up way up high

0:06:280:06:33

# All across the land Dawns a brand-new morn

0:06:350:06:41

# This comes to pass When a child is born

0:06:410:06:47

# A silent wish sails the seven seas

0:06:490:06:54

# The wind of change Whispers in the trees

0:06:560:07:01

# All the walls of doubt Crumble tossed and torn

0:07:030:07:09

# This comes to pass When a child is born

0:07:090:07:15

# A rosy hue settles all around

0:07:160:07:22

# You've got the feel You're on solid ground

0:07:230:07:29

# For a spell or two No-one feels forlorn

0:07:310:07:37

# This comes to pass When a child is born

0:07:370:07:44

# It's all a dream, an illusion now

0:07:470:07:55

# It must come true Sometime soon somehow

0:07:550:08:02

# All across the land Dawns a brand-new morn

0:08:020:08:08

# When a child is born

0:08:180:08:26

# When a child is born. #

0:08:260:08:33

As well as wonderful singing from all four corners of the UK,

0:08:410:08:44

we've met a whole range of extraordinary people

0:08:440:08:47

with some truly inspirational stories.

0:08:470:08:50

Nick Vujicic is an internet sensation whose antics have gone viral

0:08:530:08:57

as he refuses to let severe disability stand in his way.

0:08:570:09:01

They call it phocomelia which means a baby being born without limbs

0:09:010:09:05

with no medical reason.

0:09:050:09:07

When I was 15 years old, I read John chapter 9 - a man was born blind,

0:09:070:09:11

and no-one knew why he was born that way

0:09:110:09:13

and I'm like, "Oh, I can relate to that!"

0:09:130:09:16

And Jesus said it was done

0:09:160:09:17

so that the works of God would be revealed through him.

0:09:170:09:21

And I thought, wow,

0:09:210:09:22

if Jesus had a plan for a blind man then he has a plan for me.

0:09:220:09:26

One man's devout faith was at the heart of another remarkable story.

0:09:260:09:30

In 1979, Michael Ho faced starvation after being stranded

0:09:300:09:36

at sea for 17 days with nearly 80 other Vietnamese boat people

0:09:360:09:41

including a mother and her newborn baby.

0:09:410:09:43

I said, "If you save the baby, Lord,

0:09:440:09:47

"I promise you, I will be a good man."

0:09:470:09:49

And suddenly, I looked out in the ocean.

0:09:510:09:54

A British cargo ship from nowhere suddenly appeared from the ocean.

0:09:540:10:01

Michael later became a priest and 36 years on was finally reunited

0:10:010:10:06

with his British rescuers, Ian and Jenny McBain.

0:10:060:10:10

Nice to meet you again. Thank you for saving our lives.

0:10:120:10:16

HE SNIFFS

0:10:160:10:18

One of the most extraordinary stories actually came

0:10:210:10:24

from one of our viewers.

0:10:240:10:26

David Hinkins wrote to Songs of Praise to tell us

0:10:260:10:29

how his father, George,

0:10:290:10:30

sacrificed his life to save crew members of a British aircraft carrier

0:10:300:10:35

when it was attacked by a Japanese kamikaze pilot.

0:10:350:10:39

I was quite amazed to find out that I had a father that was a hero

0:10:390:10:46

but at the same time, I missed him, definitely.

0:10:460:10:49

I still do.

0:10:490:10:51

David's attempts to find out more about the pilot drew a blank,

0:10:510:10:54

but a Japanese TV team heard his story

0:10:540:10:57

and, amazingly, managed to trace the pilot's brother

0:10:570:11:00

and brought a video message to play to David.

0:11:000:11:02

After the story was broadcast on Songs of Praise,

0:11:100:11:13

David accepted an offer from an anonymous businessman to travel

0:11:130:11:17

to Japan to meet the brother of the kamikaze pilot, Yoshinari Kurose.

0:11:170:11:22

When we met in the tea garden, as soon as I got hold of his hand,

0:11:230:11:28

there was something passed between us.

0:11:280:11:30

I can only say it was the Lord working.

0:11:300:11:33

And we just had a mutual understanding.

0:11:330:11:38

I wanted to offer forgiveness and reconciliation,

0:11:410:11:47

erm, which he accepted.

0:11:470:11:50

And everything came together. It was the Lord's timing.

0:11:520:11:56

He knew when it was right to do this and we just got on and did it.

0:11:560:12:01

Coming up, we'll betaking a look back at some high-profile stories

0:14:520:14:56

of faith which really made an impact.

0:14:560:14:59

First though, another musical highlight, this time

0:14:590:15:02

from Keswick with worship leader, composer and singer Stuart Townend.

0:15:020:15:06

As we're all too familiar,

0:18:080:18:10

2015 has been a year dominated by the refugee crisis and acts of terrorism,

0:18:100:18:15

and whether it be in Paris, Tunisia or the Jungle in Calais,

0:18:150:18:20

on Songs of Praise, we've aimed to reflect the mood of the nation

0:18:200:18:23

as some of these events have unfolded and touched all our lives.

0:18:230:18:27

The threat of terrorism was a subject His Royal Highness Prince Charles

0:18:290:18:33

focused on during a special interview with Diane Louise Jordan in February.

0:18:330:18:38

I find it heartbreaking that these sort of things should happen.

0:18:380:18:42

The frightening part is that people can be so radicalised

0:18:420:18:46

either through contact with somebody else or through the internet

0:18:460:18:50

and the extraordinary amount of crazy stuff that is on the internet.

0:18:500:18:56

I think the secret is we have to work harder to build bridges and

0:18:560:19:01

we have to remember that our Lord taught us to love our neighbour.

0:19:010:19:06

To do to others as you'd have them do to you and just

0:19:080:19:14

to go on despite the setbacks and despite the discouragement,

0:19:140:19:18

to try and build bridges and to show justice and kindness to people.

0:19:180:19:25

And faith was very much in focus

0:19:270:19:29

in the midst of one of the year's other headline stories,

0:19:290:19:32

the migrant crisis affecting Europe.

0:19:320:19:35

In August, Sally visited Calais

0:19:350:19:37

and, in particular, the camp known as the Jungle.

0:19:370:19:41

So this is the church. It's surrounded by rubbish.

0:19:440:19:49

It's clearly makeshift and temporary, but it is a church and...

0:19:490:19:55

there's something rather striking about it and it clearly

0:19:550:19:57

brings a lot of comfort to many of the Christians who live here.

0:19:570:20:02

Inside, it was clear just how important this church

0:20:020:20:06

was to its worshippers.

0:20:060:20:07

It seems that a lot of effort and care has gone into this.

0:20:080:20:12

All of us just... We love this church.

0:20:120:20:15

More than ourselves, you know?

0:20:150:20:16

Despite the huge controversy surrounding the very existence

0:20:190:20:23

of the camp, UK Christian volunteers were clear

0:20:230:20:26

about the importance of their mission to support the people there.

0:20:260:20:31

A lot of people at home where you come from are unhappy

0:20:310:20:34

about helping migrants, feel they shouldn't be here

0:20:340:20:37

and if they are here, they shouldn't be encouraged.

0:20:370:20:39

That's very sad, really, that people feel that way.

0:20:390:20:44

But that's not how the church feels.

0:20:440:20:46

That's what the church is here for, to reach the lost, the poor,

0:20:460:20:50

and the hopeless.

0:20:500:20:52

More recently, in November,

0:20:540:20:56

the people of Paris drew on their faith and solidarity

0:20:560:21:00

as multiple terrorist attacks left the whole country

0:21:000:21:04

and the wider world stunned.

0:21:040:21:06

The leaders of the Anglican and Catholic churches

0:21:060:21:09

spoke exclusively to Songs of Praise.

0:21:090:21:12

My wife and I lived in Paris for five years

0:21:130:21:17

and it was one of the happiest places we've lived

0:21:170:21:20

and to think of a place of such celebration of life...

0:21:200:21:24

..seeing such suffering is utterly heartbreaking.

0:21:260:21:29

I just kept thinking of people who had gone out for a drink,

0:21:290:21:32

who had gone out for a meal, gone out to a football match

0:21:320:21:35

and were not coming home. Had just been slaughtered.

0:21:350:21:39

The terrorists, of course,

0:21:390:21:40

believe they're doing all this to glorify their god.

0:21:400:21:43

Just because someone believes something deeply wrong,

0:21:430:21:47

it doesn't mean that they're right in some strange way

0:21:470:21:51

because they put God in it.

0:21:510:21:52

The perversion of faith is one of the most desperate aspects

0:21:540:21:57

of our world today.

0:21:570:22:00

I think their intention is completely distorted

0:22:000:22:05

in terms of any claim over religious motive,

0:22:050:22:09

and, as Pope Francis has said, their actions are a blasphemy against God.

0:22:090:22:14

# Deep peace Of the running wave to you

0:22:190:22:27

# Deep peace Of the flowing air to you

0:22:280:22:36

# Deep peace Of the quiet Earth to you

0:22:380:22:46

# Deep peace Of the shining stars to you

0:22:470:22:55

# Deep peace Of the gentle night to you

0:22:570:23:06

# Moon and stars Pour their healing light on you

0:23:060:23:14

# Deep peace of Christ

0:23:160:23:24

# The light of the world

0:23:240:23:33

# Of the world to you

0:23:330:23:39

# Deep peace of Christ

0:23:410:23:50

# To you. #

0:23:500:24:02

Still to come, we'll be catching up

0:24:050:24:07

with the Songs of Praise FA Cup Fans Choir,

0:24:070:24:09

to relive some of the best moments from their big day out

0:24:090:24:12

at the Cup Final at Wembley.

0:24:120:24:14

But first, another musical treat from London.

0:24:140:24:18

Now, as you know, we love hearing choirs on Songs of Praise.

0:26:450:26:50

Perhaps our most memorable musical moment of 2015

0:26:500:26:54

was when our FA Cup Fans Choir sang Abide With Me

0:26:540:26:58

alongside 90,000 fans at the Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in May.

0:26:580:27:03

The FA Cup is one of sport's biggest events,

0:27:050:27:08

watched by a global audience of around 500 million people.

0:27:080:27:12

To celebrate this amazing event,

0:27:120:27:14

Songs Of Praise decided to put together a choir like no other

0:27:140:27:18

for our biggest ever sing-along.

0:27:180:27:21

64 football fans, each one from a football club that made it

0:27:210:27:25

to the third round, descended on Wembley.

0:27:250:27:28

I'm from Bradford. I'm from Chelsea.

0:27:280:27:30

We played each other a couple of months back.

0:27:300:27:31

And Aled Jones was there to meet them.

0:27:310:27:34

Anyone excited about singing in Wembley? Yes! Yes.

0:27:340:27:38

Our budding Cup choristers found it daunting at first

0:27:380:27:41

and some struggled to hit the right note.

0:27:410:27:45

Now, I can hear I'm going to have to work with a few of you.

0:27:450:27:48

HE SINGS OFF-KEY

0:27:480:27:50

But with help from conductor Steve Thompson,

0:27:500:27:53

and a few slightly unusual warm-up techniques,

0:27:530:27:57

our own FA Cup team soon found that they were not only pitch-ready

0:27:570:28:01

but were forging some unexpected friendships too.

0:28:010:28:04

All the best. All the best to you too next season!

0:28:040:28:08

Together, they faced the Wembley crowd

0:28:090:28:11

and with singing star Alfie Boe leading them on,

0:28:110:28:14

inspired 90,000 spectators

0:28:140:28:17

to deliver an iconic rendition of this classic hymn.

0:28:170:28:20

# Abide with me

0:28:200:28:25

# Fast falls the eventide

0:28:250:28:33

# The darkness deepens... #

0:28:330:28:40

Seven months later, the choir are back

0:28:400:28:42

and it's like time hasn't passed.

0:28:420:28:45

Musical director, Steve Thompson, has responded to a Christmas appeal

0:28:450:28:48

from the people of Totton near Southampton.

0:28:480:28:51

They said, "Steve, would you come and switch the lights on?"

0:28:510:28:54

I said, "I'd be honoured to do that."

0:28:540:28:55

But I thought for one moment,

0:28:550:28:57

could I possibly bring the FA Cup choir back together

0:28:570:29:00

to help me put the lights on?

0:29:000:29:02

So I sent out a gentle Facebook message and it was unanimous -

0:29:020:29:06

"Steve, we'll come and do it."

0:29:060:29:07

'Not only switching the lights on...'

0:29:080:29:11

CHEERING

0:29:110:29:14

550 kids have made these lanterns

0:29:140:29:17

and they're going to have a parade through the streets.

0:29:170:29:20

So the choir's going to be a part of the parade,

0:29:200:29:22

then later on in the evening, we're going to do a concert

0:29:220:29:25

where they'll perform five songs.

0:29:250:29:26

Here's one that we can all sing along to!

0:29:260:29:28

O Come All Ye Faithful. Together!

0:29:280:29:30

# O come all ye faithful

0:29:300:29:35

# Joyful and triumphant... #

0:29:350:29:38

Whether there's two of us or there's 64, in some ways, it doesn't matter.

0:29:380:29:42

But because there's that great bond, it's wonderful to see everybody.

0:29:420:29:47

And it's good talking to other members that were in the choir

0:29:470:29:49

because I think family and friends back home

0:29:490:29:51

are getting fed up with me going on about it now!

0:29:510:29:54

In July, I'm getting married

0:29:550:29:57

and I've asked Vicky to be one of my bridesmaids

0:29:570:30:01

because we've become really good friends.

0:30:010:30:03

Putting God centre stage at the Wembley FA Cup Final was

0:30:050:30:08

so important for me

0:30:080:30:10

because I got ordained a month later.

0:30:100:30:12

Well, I've got a tattoo of the FA Cup on my arm.

0:30:140:30:18

I wanted to get a Christian tattoo anyway,

0:30:180:30:20

and I wasn't quite sure what to get, so I just thought, "That's it."

0:30:200:30:24

Some great memories of a choir
