As a short truce between Israel and Hamas ends tonight,

:00:00.:00:07.

the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza rises to more than 1,000.

:00:08.:00:11.

the first family members arrive at the site - where investigations into

:00:12.:00:35.

The first female commander of a front line Royal Navy warship

:00:36.:00:40.

faces allegations of an affair with one of her crew.

:00:41.:00:43.

And at the Commonwealth Games - the first gold for Wales

:00:44.:00:46.

A truce between Israel and Hamas ended this evening,

:00:47.:01:09.

with more rockets being fired from inside Gaza.

:01:10.:01:12.

During the few hours of the ceasefire, Palestinian

:01:13.:01:15.

rescuers recovered more than 130 bodies from the rubble of buildings,

:01:16.:01:17.

That brings the total number of Palestinians killed

:01:18.:01:22.

in the conflict to 1,033 - according to the Gaza Health ministry.

:01:23.:01:30.

42 Israelis have also been killed - most of them soldiers.

:01:31.:01:43.

Our international affairs correspondent Ian Pannell reports

:01:44.:01:44.

Some viewers may find his report distressing.

:01:45.:01:51.

At 8am this morning the guns fell silent and people poured onto the

:01:52.:01:59.

streets. Towards homes they had left because of the conflicts between

:02:00.:02:06.

Hamas and Israel. The scars of the bombardments ever deeper as they

:02:07.:02:07.

walked in. But no one bombardments ever deeper as they

:02:08.:02:13.

imagined what they were about to see. One week ago this was a

:02:14.:02:25.

bustling neighbourhood. Home to thousands of people. Now, crushed

:02:26.:02:33.

beyond recognition by intense Israeli shelling. We saw Hassan

:02:34.:02:41.

weeping on a mound of rubble. This had been his home. It was his life

:02:42.:02:48.

savings that went into it. Today it's all gone. It feels like my

:02:49.:02:52.

heart is full of knives, he says. Dozens of bodies were pulled from

:02:53.:03:07.

the rubble today. Another killed with one of her children. And the

:03:08.:03:13.

desperation of her sons trying to release them. Many heeded Israeli

:03:14.:03:20.

warnings to get out. But the stench of death marks those unable or

:03:21.:03:30.

unwilling to. And for this man the grief of finding his son's body was

:03:31.:03:40.

simply too much. This district lies within clear sight of the border.

:03:41.:03:45.

Israel says attacks were planned here and dozens of tunnels used by

:03:46.:03:50.

militants have been unearthed. We have come to the very eastern part

:03:51.:03:55.

of Gaza where it borders Israel. You can just see over there, literally

:03:56.:04:00.

about 400 metres away, an Israeli tank. This entire area has been

:04:01.:04:05.

literally bulldozed down with huge damage to the buildings either side.

:04:06.:04:08.

The mood remains very tense. We've heard at least one tank shell come

:04:09.:04:13.

and the sound of automatic gunfire as Israeli drones constantly hover

:04:14.:04:18.

overhead. Like everyone else she came here to collect her things

:04:19.:04:23.

today but it wasn't possible. TRANSLATION: I can't find my house.

:04:24.:04:29.

Where is it? I could not see anything. Nothing is left. The house

:04:30.:04:39.

is gone. Everything is gone. Fatima also came hoping to grab a few

:04:40.:04:45.

possessions. The family had five houses right here, but their homes

:04:46.:04:50.

have been bulldozed. An Israeli official told us that Hamas tunnels

:04:51.:04:56.

had been found in the area. TRANSLATION: I don't know why they

:04:57.:05:04.

have demolished the houses. Why? I swear, not one bullet has been fired

:05:05.:05:08.

from here. No one attacked the border. Now the Israeli cease-fire

:05:09.:05:15.

has ended, and Hamas has already fired across the border. So, while

:05:16.:05:19.

people here may pray for lasting peace, few expect it.

:05:20.:05:26.

Our Middle East correspondent Orla Guerin is in the Israeli city of

:05:27.:05:29.

Tel Aviv, where sirens have been sounding this evening.

:05:30.:05:34.

More Hamas rockets were fired this evening. What is Israel's response

:05:35.:05:40.

likely to be? Hamas has fired about a dozen rockets so far this evening,

:05:41.:05:45.

by their own account. This happened after the temporary cease-fire for

:05:46.:05:48.

human Terry and reasons ended about four hours ago. In the last ten

:05:49.:05:52.

minutes we had an update from senior Israeli officials, who told the BBC

:05:53.:05:56.

they have agreed to a demand, or a request I should say, from the

:05:57.:06:01.

United Nations, to extend the temporary cease-fire by 24 hours.

:06:02.:06:05.

They have told us: The Army will take action if this cease-fire is

:06:06.:06:11.

breached. But during this further humanitarian pause the Army will

:06:12.:06:15.

continue to, as they put it, neutralise the terror tunnels and

:06:16.:06:19.

also the Cabinet will convene tomorrow to discuss continuing the

:06:20.:06:22.

operation. Israel made it clear tonight this is a further temporary

:06:23.:06:25.

pause. And it would last until tomorrow evening. We have not had

:06:26.:06:30.

any response from Hamas, but the indications from them in the last

:06:31.:06:34.

few hours was that they would not agree to any further truce. They say

:06:35.:06:39.

Israel is using any truce, any pause in hostilities, to prepare further

:06:40.:06:43.

attacks. They also say the scale of the destruction caused by Israel is

:06:44.:06:47.

now clear and a Hamas spokesman said that was a game change. The Israelis

:06:48.:06:50.

will once again be concerned that more rockets are coming in and they

:06:51.:06:54.

will have to be retreating to shelters. Most of the people in Gaza

:06:55.:06:59.

can only hope for a temporary lull. Thank you for joining us.

:07:00.:07:02.

A team of military police officers has arrived in eastern Ukraine to

:07:03.:07:07.

help search for the remains of victims of the Malaysian airliner

:07:08.:07:10.

They're negotiating with the Ukrainian parliament

:07:11.:07:16.

and pro-Russian rebels before they can travel to

:07:17.:07:18.

Amongst the blackened debris of Flight MH17, the parents of one of

:07:19.:07:32.

the victims. George did in ski and his wife Angela travelled from

:07:33.:07:37.

Australia to be here where there water Fatima and so many others

:07:38.:07:41.

died. We have promised our daughter we would come here. But actually as

:07:42.:07:48.

soon as the, there was a time factor. We should have come here

:07:49.:07:50.

soon as the, there was a time minute it happened,

:07:51.:07:57.

soon as the, there was a time investigation at the crash site in

:07:58.:07:59.

rebel controlled territory will not begin for any other remains and

:08:00.:08:02.

belongings of passengers still here are recovered. And Dutch police say

:08:03.:08:08.

they will not start doing that before next Thursday. That's because

:08:09.:08:14.

while fighting continues nearby between government forces and the

:08:15.:08:19.

rebels the Dutch want their presence in a conflict zone approved by

:08:20.:08:23.

Ukraine's Parliament. We believe this footage is genuine and was

:08:24.:08:27.

filmed around Donetsk, which is now a focal point of this war. Back in

:08:28.:08:31.

the government-controlled city of Kharkiv, why a memorial for the

:08:32.:08:37.

victims, we asked this senior Dutch police officer the decision to wait.

:08:38.:08:43.

We are guests in this country. This is not our country. We are guests

:08:44.:08:47.

and everything we do here we need Ukrainian support to do so. But

:08:48.:08:52.

while the operation in Ukraine now appears to be on hold progress in

:08:53.:08:57.

the Netherlands. Today the final coffins at containing the victims'

:08:58.:09:00.

remains collected by rebels in eastern Ukraine several days ago.

:09:01.:09:13.

The Foreign Office has advised against travel to Libya and anyone

:09:14.:09:16.

they should leave the country. It follows intense fighting

:09:17.:09:20.

in the capital Tripoli The United States has also called

:09:21.:09:22.

on its citizens to leave The first female commander

:09:23.:09:26.

of a British warship is understood to have left her vessel

:09:27.:09:29.

after allegations Commander Sarah West, who's 42, was

:09:30.:09:31.

coming to the end of a seven-month Our correspondent Philippa Thomas

:09:32.:09:36.

joins us now from the Ministry Philippa, what do we know about

:09:37.:09:52.

this? Commander Sarah West first made headlines two years ago when

:09:53.:09:54.

she became the first woman to command a front-line warship in the

:09:55.:09:58.

Navy's centuries of history, describing that as the highlight of

:09:59.:10:02.

her 16 year career. We understand she was chosen because she

:10:03.:10:06.

demonstrated leadership, moral courage and sound judgement. Now, at

:10:07.:10:13.

the moment she is, we are told, on annual leave and her

:10:14.:10:15.

second-in-command is now in charge of the ship. We have to say we have

:10:16.:10:20.

no confirmation that Commander West, who is single, has had an

:10:21.:10:24.

inappropriate relationship that the MoD says the department is treating

:10:25.:10:27.

seriously an allegation that there has been a breach of what is called

:10:28.:10:30.

a code of social conduct on board the ship. It adds that anyone who is

:10:31.:10:37.

found to fall short of the Royal Navy's high standards can expect to

:10:38.:10:40.

face appropriate action. I should stress this code does not forbid

:10:41.:10:45.

personal relationships, that it can been as misconduct relationships

:10:46.:10:48.

which are found to damage operational effectiveness, or team

:10:49.:10:54.

cohesion, and sanctions can range from informal advice to disciplinary

:10:55.:11:00.

action. Only in the case of persistent, serious, social

:11:01.:11:03.

misconduct, as they put it, will an officer be sacked.

:11:04.:11:09.

20 local councils in England are asking the government for new

:11:10.:11:12.

They say ?400 million could be raised - and used to help

:11:13.:11:16.

Ministers say it could lead to higher food prices.

:11:17.:11:19.

Our business correspondent, Rob Young reports.

:11:20.:11:26.

Wakefield in West Yorkshire, one of the places where the high street is

:11:27.:11:31.

under pressure. Discount stores and empty shops abound. John Parker is

:11:32.:11:37.

still here, though, having run this newsagent for 30 years. I've seen so

:11:38.:11:43.

many changes with the multiples taking over the high streets. They

:11:44.:11:47.

are taking the lifeblood out of the town centre. We have got this

:11:48.:11:51.

doughnut like effect where are the big retailing is taking place around

:11:52.:11:55.

the perimeter of the town centres and the centre itself is becoming a

:11:56.:12:00.

voided area. So what is the state of the British high street? One in

:12:01.:12:03.

seven stores like this one are vacant. The losers are newsagents

:12:04.:12:09.

and shops selling women's clothing. Those that are opening our

:12:10.:12:15.

discounters and charity stores. Some councils in England are blaming

:12:16.:12:18.

supermarkets, so they want to levy a new tax on large stores to help

:12:19.:12:23.

smaller retailers. The supermarket levy is working successfully in

:12:24.:12:25.

Northern Ireland and Scotland already. If introduced in England it

:12:26.:12:29.

would enable councillors to bring in income, which they can then ploughed

:12:30.:12:34.

back into supporting small businesses and improving public

:12:35.:12:37.

services. Supermarkets are likely to resist the tax, arguing they pay

:12:38.:12:41.

enough already and provide lots of jobs. This business consultant

:12:42.:12:45.

carried out a review into high streets. He says a new tax will not

:12:46.:12:49.

help revive them. It is a laudable aim to improve town centres but the

:12:50.:12:54.

mechanism for doing it is questionable in terms of targeting

:12:55.:12:57.

one specific group, questionable in terms of whether the money will

:12:58.:13:01.

actually be used to rejuvenate town centres. I'm Mary Porter as and I

:13:02.:13:05.

want to find out whether our traditional high streets have

:13:06.:13:08.

reached the end of the road. The government accepts there is a

:13:09.:13:11.

problem and asked the retail expert to come up with a plan. Her

:13:12.:13:15.

suggestion, such as relaxing some regulations, are being tried out.

:13:16.:13:19.

Today, ministers want a new supermarket tax would push up food

:13:20.:13:23.

prices are so there do not seem to be any easy answers to improving the

:13:24.:13:25.

high Street. Now, with the day's big sports news

:13:26.:13:26.

- here's Katie Gornall at It's been a busy day at the

:13:27.:13:29.

Commonwealth Games here in Glasgow. There were 29 gold medals won -

:13:30.:13:36.

including two for Wales - their first of these games - in

:13:37.:13:39.

the rhythmic gymnastics and judo. But it's the host nation who have

:13:40.:13:41.

dominated the judo today with their flag bearer Euan Burton

:13:42.:13:45.

sparking a gold rush for Scotland. With more on the day's events,

:13:46.:13:48.

here's our sports correspondent His report does contain

:13:49.:13:51.

some flash photography. It is one of sport's ultimate fairy

:13:52.:14:04.

tale endings. Wales's Frankie Jones in triumph and in tears. The ribbon

:14:05.:14:09.

event was the last of her entire gymnastics career. She had gone into

:14:10.:14:12.

it with a remarkable five silver medals here in Glasgow, but no

:14:13.:14:17.

gold. This was her final chance, and how she took it. COMMENTATOR: What a

:14:18.:14:23.

competition she has had, whatever the result. After an agonising wait

:14:24.:14:29.

gold was eventually and emotionally confirmed. Jones could retire a

:14:30.:14:34.

Commonwealth champion. The last routine was for me and I was like

:14:35.:14:37.

I'm going to go more Dancy and Smylie and dans my heart out because

:14:38.:14:42.

it's my last thing ever. And that's the best way it could ever have

:14:43.:14:46.

finished. Around Glasgow, meanwhile, it was a day where fans flocked by

:14:47.:14:50.

any means possible. This is one of the busiest days of the entire

:14:51.:14:55.

Games, and some have even sailed here. This flotilla of 250 boats

:14:56.:14:59.

journeyed up the River Clyde, and once again for the home teams there

:15:00.:15:04.

has been plenty to cheer. For one sporting couple there were mixed

:15:05.:15:08.

fortunes. England's Gemma Gibbons lost her judo final to Wales's

:15:09.:15:13.

Natalie Powell, before watching her husband Euan Burton take gold.

:15:14.:15:18.

Burton was Scotland's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Barely a dry

:15:19.:15:22.

eye in the house. I've been nervous all day to be honest. The crowd is

:15:23.:15:27.

expected and you are carrying the flag in front of your team. You are

:15:28.:15:31.

expected to do something so I'm pleased I was able to. There was

:15:32.:15:35.

more Scottish success in the velodrome. Neil Fachie and Craig

:15:36.:15:40.

McClayne charge into their second gold in Para cycling. It was a good

:15:41.:15:45.

day for England too, Zoe Smith weightlifting and back flipping her

:15:46.:15:51.

way to gold. While in the pool Adam Peaty beat Scotland's Ross Murdoch

:15:52.:15:55.

in the 100 meter breaststroke. And after three days of sunshine a

:15:56.:16:00.

lightning bolt. Usain Bolt's arrival spiking predictable excitement. The

:16:01.:16:04.

Games biggest name is finally in town.

:16:05.:16:06.

Let's move away from the games now to Formula One

:16:07.:16:08.

where Lewis Hamilton's troubles in qualifying continued.

:16:09.:16:11.

His engine burst into flames which means he'll start tomorrow's

:16:12.:16:13.

Hungarian Grand Prix from the pitlane.

:16:14.:16:17.

His team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg took pole.

:16:18.:16:27.

And Vincenzo Nibali is on course to be crowned Tour de

:16:28.:16:31.

The Italian survived today's individual time trial

:16:32.:16:36.

and finished in fourth place to extend his overall lead.

:16:37.:16:38.

And the tradition of the yellow jersey not being attacked

:16:39.:16:40.

on the final day has practically confirmed him as the winner.

:16:41.:16:43.

The stage itself was won by world time trial champion Tony Martin.

:16:44.:16:47.

And that is all the sport, back to you.

:16:48.:16:55.

Tomorrow morning at eight on BBC1 Andrew Marr speaks to

:16:56.:16:58.

the labour leader, Ed Miliband on his public image and policies.

:16:59.:17:00.

and Wales but further North Northern Ireland is starting to see a change

:17:01.:17:20.

to something cooler. We will see cooler conditions in the next few

:17:21.:17:23.

days with temperatures down to the seasonal norm. Some sunshine around

:17:24.:17:28.

but also some rain in the forecast. In the
