A mass shooting at a nightclub in Florida claims the lives

:00:00.:00:07.

It's the worst attack of its kind in modern US history.

:00:08.:00:23.

It happened in the early hours at a crowded gay club in Orlando.

:00:24.:00:30.

The president said it was an attack on all Americans.

:00:31.:00:33.

This was an act of terror and an act of hate.

:00:34.:00:36.

As Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage and in resolve

:00:37.:00:38.

The gunman has been named as Omar Mateen -

:00:39.:00:44.

a US citizen of Afghan descent - who was already known to the FBI.

:00:45.:00:51.

The FBI first became aware of Mateen in 2013 when he made

:00:52.:00:52.

inflammatory comments to co-workers, alleging possible terrorist ties.

:00:53.:00:56.

We'll have the latest from Orlando and Washington,

:00:57.:00:58.

following claims from Islamic State that it was responsible.

:00:59.:01:00.

And it might have been a washout but it turned out nice again

:01:17.:01:23.

President Obama has declared the mass shooting

:01:24.:01:49.

at a gay nightclub in Florida, in which 50 people died,

:01:50.:01:53.

as an act of terror and an act of hate.

:01:54.:01:55.

It happened in the early hours of the morning

:01:56.:01:57.

when a man opened fire in the crowded nightclub in Orlando.

:01:58.:02:02.

The so-called Islamic State group has issued a statement,

:02:03.:02:04.

The gunman, named as Omar Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent,

:02:05.:02:10.

had come to the FBI's attention three years ago.

:02:11.:02:14.

Our North America editor, Jon Sopel, is in Orlando with the latest.

:02:15.:02:22.

A new name for an inglorious list. First of all you had Virginia Tech

:02:23.:02:35.

then Sandy Hook elementary school, the Charleston shootings, the list

:02:36.:02:42.

goes on and on. Now this one. The nightclub is 100 yards down the road

:02:43.:02:46.

behind me and it is the worst of them all in terms of fatalities. 50

:02:47.:02:48.

people killed on a night out. Gunshots at the Pulse nightclub in

:02:49.:02:58.

Orlando. It is too in the morning. Inside, a lone gunman with an

:02:59.:03:02.

assault rifle and revolver is systematically shooting at the

:03:03.:03:09.

partygoers. Oh, my God! He takes hostages and three hours elapse

:03:10.:03:13.

before a police SWAT team forces its way in and kills him. By then, 50

:03:14.:03:20.

are dead. No one knew what was going on until they saw people on the

:03:21.:03:25.

ground screaming and heard the commotion. One mother received a

:03:26.:03:30.

text from her son trapped inside saying he thought he was going to

:03:31.:03:34.

die. Another struggles to find out if her son is still alive. No one

:03:35.:03:40.

can town me where my son is, if he has been shot or is dead. No one

:03:41.:03:44.

knows. They tummy there are fatalities. The gunman, Omar Mateen,

:03:45.:03:52.

is of Afghan descent and had beyond FBI radar as a possible sympathiser.

:03:53.:03:58.

There was a fear of booby traps at the scene. It had been a deeply

:03:59.:04:04.

traumatic night. To look into the eyes of officers told the whole

:04:05.:04:09.

story. They were all shaken by this incident, by what they saw inside

:04:10.:04:14.

the club. They did an unbelievable job with courageous efforts in

:04:15.:04:20.

rescuing many, many hostages. In Washington, Barack Obama is

:04:21.:04:25.

reworking a script he has delivered all too often during his presidency.

:04:26.:04:33.

We know enough to say this was an act of terror and an act of hate. As

:04:34.:04:39.

Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage, in resolve to defend our

:04:40.:04:45.

people. Then, on to be issued at the most powerful man in the world has

:04:46.:04:48.

been able to make simply no progress on. This massacre is a further

:04:49.:04:54.

reminder of how easy it is full someone to get their hands on a

:04:55.:04:59.

weapon that shoots people in a school or a house of worship, or a

:05:00.:05:04.

movie theatre, or in a nightclub. And we have to decide if that is the

:05:05.:05:10.

kind of country we want to be. The motive was clear. Omar Mateen rang

:05:11.:05:14.

police from inside the nightclub and said he had been inspired by

:05:15.:05:19.

so-called Islamic State. Another home-grown jihadists willing to kill

:05:20.:05:23.

at random, in a society where getting hold of the most powerful

:05:24.:05:27.

and lethal weaponry is as easy as easy can be.

:05:28.:05:31.

As we heard, the so-called Islamic State group has said one

:05:32.:05:34.

of its "fighters" was responsible for the atrocity.

:05:35.:05:36.

Earlier, Omar Mateen's father claimed the attack had nothing

:05:37.:05:38.

But the FBI has acknowledged that it first became aware

:05:39.:05:41.

of Mateen in 2013, following reports that he'd

:05:42.:05:43.

talked about possible links with terror groups.

:05:44.:05:47.

Our security correspondent Gordon Corera has the latest.

:05:48.:05:55.

Omar Mateen seen here in pictures from his own social media account.

:05:56.:06:01.

His family was from Afghanistan that he was born in New York. Today his

:06:02.:06:08.

house, an hour and a half from Orlando, was being searched. Those

:06:09.:06:14.

who knew him expressed their shock. Outgoing, a regular young kid. He

:06:15.:06:17.

was younger than me. It is crazy. I do not know. Omar was cool, calm and

:06:18.:06:25.

collected. I never saw him in a fist fight. What led Omar Mateen to

:06:26.:06:31.

attack a gay club? His father said he was not motivated by religion but

:06:32.:06:38.

was angry at seeing a gay couple embracing in front of his family. In

:06:39.:06:42.

the last few hours, so-called Islamic State issued this message

:06:43.:06:45.

describing him as one of their fighters. It is not the from this

:06:46.:06:51.

whether they had direct contact with him or inspired him to act and are

:06:52.:06:57.

now claiming credit. -- not clear. The FBI had said he had been

:06:58.:07:01.

investigated and cleared twice, once for possible links to a suicide

:07:02.:07:06.

bomber and once for concerned at work. The FBI first became aware of

:07:07.:07:11.

Mateen in 2013 when he made inflammatory comments to co-workers,

:07:12.:07:16.

alleging possible terrorist ties will stop the FBI investigated the

:07:17.:07:21.

matter could including interviews with witnesses, physical

:07:22.:07:25.

surveillance and records checks. Bombs targeting the Boston Marathon

:07:26.:07:30.

in 2013 make clear the threat of home-grown terrorism in America was

:07:31.:07:34.

increasing. Killings in San Bernardino last year more closely

:07:35.:07:39.

resemble events in Orlando. Then a married couple pledged allegiance to

:07:40.:07:44.

ISO 40 a gun attack in their workplace. The FBI will now be

:07:45.:07:50.

scouring every detail of Omar Mateen's life. As the FBI tries to

:07:51.:07:56.

understand what mix of hatred and ideology drove him, they'll be

:07:57.:07:57.

fearful of what more is to come. In a moment, the latest

:07:58.:08:02.

from the scene with Jon Sopel. But first to Nick Bryant

:08:03.:08:05.

at the White House. We're entering a crucial phase in

:08:06.:08:12.

the presidential campaign. Just wondering what you think might be

:08:13.:08:16.

the impact of these events on that campaign. Within hours of the

:08:17.:08:23.

Orlando massacre, it was being politicised, but front and centre in

:08:24.:08:26.

the battle for the White House. Donald Trump went on to Twitter and

:08:27.:08:31.

thanked people for congratulating him about being right about radical

:08:32.:08:37.

Islam, as he put it. He said he did not want congratulations, he wanted

:08:38.:08:40.

toughness and vigilance. The last few minutes he has released a

:08:41.:08:43.

statement, calling on President Obama to resign and Hillary Clinton

:08:44.:08:47.

to drop out of the race because they will refuse to use the term radical

:08:48.:08:52.

Islam. President Obama has not used it because he thinks it implies that

:08:53.:08:59.

America is at war with a religion. Hillary Clinton has announced she is

:09:00.:09:04.

postponing what would be her first joint appearance with President

:09:05.:09:08.

Obama later in the week. Donald Trump clearly believes that Orlando

:09:09.:09:12.

will help him, as did Paris, as did San Bernardino. There are many

:09:13.:09:17.

people who will think that trying to score political points on a day like

:09:18.:09:19.

this is gross insensitivity. Lets join John in Orlando. In a

:09:20.:09:29.

statement, he said straightaway, he raised the issue of gun control

:09:30.:09:33.

immediately. Does that mean this could see another attempt in that

:09:34.:09:40.

area? You know, it is not even 12 hours since the SWAT team is kind of

:09:41.:09:44.

managed to force their way into that nightclub and rescue the few

:09:45.:09:49.

hostages that had survived. Already, as Nick was describing, we are in a

:09:50.:09:53.

political dogfight and all those kind of questions are coming up. Gun

:09:54.:09:59.

control, hate crimes, and what to do about Islamic extremists that are

:10:00.:10:02.

home-grown. I'm sure Barrick Bama would love to make progress for the

:10:03.:10:07.

end of his presidency but people are deeply entrenched in this country on

:10:08.:10:14.

the question of gun rights. Likewise on Islamic extremism and what is the

:10:15.:10:18.

right approach. I think what will happen is it will reinforce the

:10:19.:10:20.

views of those people who are already held -- who have already

:10:21.:10:28.

held deep convictions on these matters.

:10:29.:10:31.

A vote to leave the European Union could bring more cuts

:10:32.:10:34.

in public spending and affect the state pension.

:10:35.:10:35.

That's the latest warning from David Cameron,

:10:36.:10:37.

who said the British economy would experience a "lost decade"

:10:38.:10:40.

The Prime Minister said it was his duty to spell out

:10:41.:10:43.

the risks but Vote Leave said it was taking scaremongering

:10:44.:10:46.

to new levels, as John Pienaar reports.

:10:47.:10:55.

Cue camera five, the Prime Minister. Today ) Gary warning of the date may

:10:56.:11:04.

be the scariest so far. -- today's scary warning. You could lose out on

:11:05.:11:10.

your state pension. We could meet that by putting up taxes on

:11:11.:11:14.

hard-working people or by going back to borrowing more and putting our

:11:15.:11:19.

economy at risk. Or it could be cut. Cuts do things like pensions, or

:11:20.:11:23.

health, or other things. We do not have to vote for that and risk it.

:11:24.:11:31.

Yes, he did say pensions. How old are you? If you are as old as him,

:11:32.:11:34.

you will have found a big increase in your old age pension. Pensioners

:11:35.:11:39.

rights have been revered for years. In the latest escalation of threats

:11:40.:11:44.

and promises, the state pension protection has been dragged into

:11:45.:11:47.

doubt. It is called the triple lock. It always goes up with earnings,

:11:48.:11:54.

inflation by 2.5%. Benefits like free bus passes are protected. The

:11:55.:11:57.

Prime Minister has said in the next Parliament all of that could be

:11:58.:12:03.

threatened. It came as news to ministers in the capital to leave

:12:04.:12:06.

camp you would expect to be part of a policy statement like that. One I

:12:07.:12:11.

spoke to earlier said they did not like the surprise. The levels of

:12:12.:12:19.

fear had been amplified. Effectively, the Prime Minister is

:12:20.:12:26.

undermining our own manifesto promise on pensions. Another leader

:12:27.:12:30.

's message, if Britain wants out, do not worry if the pound wobbles. Even

:12:31.:12:36.

if sterling were to fall a few percentage points after Brexit, so

:12:37.:12:40.

what? We have a floating currency and it will be good for exports. The

:12:41.:12:45.

sharpest warning today were streamed up in Downing Street. Statistics can

:12:46.:12:50.

seem a moat to everyday life. The talk of the NHS budget losing

:12:51.:12:54.

protection can seem general. The idea that pensioners could see state

:12:55.:12:59.

pensions pegged back is personal. If it sounded worrying to millions of

:13:00.:13:05.

older voters, it is meant to. Today, the Prime Minister took the debate

:13:06.:13:09.

and turned it into a dark choice for voters in what is becoming a bitter

:13:10.:13:11.

and tense campaign. One of the most prominent Leave

:13:12.:13:20.

campaigners, Michael Gove, the Justice Secretary,

:13:21.:13:22.

has told the BBC he believes ministers are actively working

:13:23.:13:24.

towards Turkey joining the EU, despite David Cameron's repeated

:13:25.:13:27.

assertions that Turkey won't be Mr Gove, whose father worked

he's campiagning to Leave. Laura Kuenssberg went

what I would be doing I remember when I was at university,

:14:23.:14:29.

I remember feeling that some of the debates weren't rooted in real

people's experiences. There was a lot of airy

Marseille's clean-up operation began with English fans left to reflect on

:19:13.:19:19.

behaviour which has been deplorable and embarrassing, it has been at

:19:20.:19:22.

that level. A lot of details need to be understood. The British and

:19:23.:19:26.

French police are working at seeing what has happened. The violence

meted out is at a different level. Supporters are moving out of their

As instructed, they went on the attack.

Northern Ireland leave Nice despondent but

We tried everything to get something out of

the game and we just did not manage to create anything of real

We have to be honest and say that the better

A few years ago, Northern Ireland would never

have imagined they would be on a stage like this, playing in their

But they know they will need to improve

if they are to keep their dream alive and get something from the

A giant street party outside Buckingham Palace

:21:51.:21:52.

has ended three days of events celebrating the Queen's

:21:53.:21:54.

Her Majesty and other members of the royal family attended

:21:55.:21:59.

the patron's lunch, which involved many of the charities

:22:00.:22:01.

associated with the years of the Queen's reign.

:22:02.:22:05.

Our royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell, sent this report.

:22:06.:22:10.

When the mallard ducks from St James's Park look at home

:22:11.:22:15.

among the puddles on The Mall, a local resident may well have

:22:16.:22:17.

if the British weather would spoil one's street party.

:22:18.:22:24.

For hours as the 10,000 guests arrived, it very nearly did.

:22:25.:22:28.

By the time the festivities were launched by the band

of the Royal Marines, the rain was easing off.

:22:39.:22:45.

it had stopped, and the principal guests were clearly in the mood

And so, in double quick time, the Queen found herself

:22:56.:23:04.

on the podium, listening to a tribute from her grandson, William.

:23:05.:23:10.

I hope you don't mind if I say a personal thank you to the Queen

:23:11.:23:14.

and to do so on behalf of all her grandchildren

:23:15.:23:16.

Granny, thank you for everything you've done for your family.

:23:17.:23:21.

We could not wish you a happier birthday.

:23:22.:23:26.

And then from the Queen herself, this.

:23:27.:23:30.

To everyone here today, and to those holding

:23:31.:23:33.

street parties elsewhere, I would like to say thank

:23:34.:23:36.

you for the wonderful support and encouragement that

:23:37.:23:40.

How I will feel if people are still singing happy birthday

There was a parade with reminders from her reign.

This was a model of the royal yacht, Britannia, but above all a day

which had begun under grey skies but finished in sunshine had one
