Police in Turkey widen their search for a gunman who opened fire

:00:00.:00:07.

at an Istanbul nightclub, killing at least 39 people.

:00:08.:00:11.

Caught on camera - CCTV footage of the moment

:00:12.:00:14.

the gunman launched his attack on partygoers celebrating

Moments earlier, revellers were welcoming in 2017,

:00:37.:00:39.

Tonight, five men have been arrested.

:00:40.:00:49.

And a spectacular launch for Hull as it begins its year

:00:50.:00:51.

Good evening, and welcome to BBC News.

:00:52.:01:12.

Police in Turkey are hunting for a gunman who opened fire

:01:13.:01:15.

at a nightclub packed with New Year revellers, killing

:01:16.:01:17.

Another 69 people were wounded - four of them critically -

:01:18.:01:23.

in what Istanbul's governor described as a terrorist attack.

:01:24.:01:26.

Officials say some 15 foreign nationals were killed

:01:27.:01:29.

in the shooting, at one of the city's most

:01:30.:01:31.

The attack marks a bloody end to a year which saw Ankara

:01:32.:01:36.

and Istanbul targeted by several attacks carried out by the so-called

:01:37.:01:39.

Islamic State group and, separately, Kurdish rebels.

:01:40.:01:41.

one of Istanbul's top nightclubs, Reina, counting down to 2017.

:01:42.:01:54.

They expected a night of joy, a fresh start - not this.

:01:55.:02:03.

Less than two hours into the New Year,

:02:04.:02:05.

bullets ricocheting as he shot a policeman and a civilian.

:02:06.:02:11.

Another camera showed people cowering as the attacker struck,

:02:12.:02:13.

Inside, his killing spree continued - Turks and foreigners murdered,

:02:14.:02:20.

others jumping into the freezing Bosporus to escape.

:02:21.:02:25.

Dozens more were injured, some critically.

:02:26.:02:28.

my husband suddenly told me to get on the floor.

:02:29.:02:39.

A man ran inside, two or three people started firing,

:02:40.:02:42.

until special forces took us out of there.

:02:43.:02:51.

They shot randomly, there were bodies lying on the floor.

:02:52.:02:53.

Today, the scene was heavily guarded -

:02:54.:02:55.

too late for the victims of last night's security breach.

:02:56.:02:57.

There's still no word of who was behind it.

:02:58.:02:59.

to what was one of Turkey's most renowned nightclubs,

:03:00.:03:04.

which has become a scene of mass murder.

:03:05.:03:07.

Turkey is now worryingly accustomed to these attacks,

:03:08.:03:10.

and, as perhaps the most turbulent year in its modern history ends,

:03:11.:03:13.

another begins, yet again marked by terror.

:03:14.:03:18.

At the mortuary, they counted up the bodies.

:03:19.:03:20.

Mohammad Razzaq from Iraq told us one of his friends was killed

:03:21.:03:28.

"We'd come here on holiday," he said.

:03:29.:03:32.

"Now we are taking our friend's body home."

:03:33.:03:36.

Visiting the wounded, the Prime Minister sounded defiant,

:03:37.:03:38.

but after more than 20 attacks in the past year,

:03:39.:03:41.

killing almost 400, many will see his words as empty.

:03:42.:03:45.

TRANSLATION: Terror cannot intimidate us.

:03:46.:03:49.

We will continue to fight against it.

:03:50.:03:55.

Our biggest insurance is to see our people standing in

:03:56.:03:57.

solidarity and supporting our resolve.

:03:58.:04:01.

Turkey now faces huge security threats.

:04:02.:04:05.

Kurdish militants have bombed soldiers and police

:04:06.:04:11.

in a worsening insurgency, recently targeting a football

:04:12.:04:13.

And, as Turkish forces became more embroiled

:04:14.:04:16.

in Syria, so-called Islamic State have hit back, attacking Istanbul

:04:17.:04:18.

Since Turkey launched a ground offensive against

:04:19.:04:24.

IS and Kurdish militias in Syria, it's more vulnerable than ever.

:04:25.:04:27.

And so, a scene that's becoming almost routine here.

:04:28.:04:33.

Today they bid farewell to Ayhan Arik - a brother, husband, father.

:04:34.:04:40.

After driving tourists to the nightclub,

:04:41.:04:42.

They grieved for him and for a country they once called safe,

:04:43.:04:49.

as they're left to wonder - what has happened to Turkey?

:04:50.:04:53.

The Queen missed the annual New Year's Day church service

:04:54.:05:00.

in Sandringham this morning, because of a lingering heavy cold.

:05:01.:05:03.

She was also absent from the Christmas Day service

:05:04.:05:05.

at her Norfolk estate because she was unwell.

:05:06.:05:07.

Buckingham Palace says the Queen has been up and about in recent days,

:05:08.:05:11.

but is still recuperating, as our royal correspondent,

:05:12.:05:12.

For a second time during the holiday season, the Royals headed to church.

:05:13.:05:20.

For a second time, the Queen was a notable absentee.

:05:21.:05:23.

Her 95-year-old husband, who's also been ill,

:05:24.:05:26.

did attend and was described by one observer as "chipper".

:05:27.:05:30.

Protected from rain and walking alongside her husband, Anne,

:05:31.:05:32.

a princess in purple, told someone in the crowd her mother

:05:33.:05:35.

During these security-conscious times, the Windsors over Christmas

:05:36.:05:41.

are an attraction for the dedicated, who, despite the weather, gather

:05:42.:05:44.

Once again, the 90-year-old monarch wasn't on display.

:05:45.:05:50.

A little bit disappointed, because the Queen wasn't there,

:05:51.:05:52.

but that is understandable at 90 years of age.

:05:53.:05:56.

She's in the best place, yes, and I wish her

:05:57.:05:59.

Obviously, if she's not well, then you don't want to see her come

:06:00.:06:05.

out in this weather, do you, you know?

:06:06.:06:07.

At Christmas, our attention is drawn to the birth of a baby

:06:08.:06:10.

The Queen, who recorded her Christmas Day message early

:06:11.:06:15.

in December, will not have taken the decision to miss church lightly

:06:16.:06:18.

- the Supreme Governor of the Church of England has

:06:19.:06:21.

But in her tenth decade, and on the advice of her doctor,

:06:22.:06:26.

the monarch is exercising caution in the face of a heavy cold she's

:06:27.:06:29.

The Queen has been laid low and left feeling pretty miserable at the end

:06:30.:06:36.

of yet another significant year in her long reign.

:06:37.:06:39.

As well as celebrating her landmark birthday, she's started

:06:40.:06:41.

to acknowledge her advancing age and reduce her workload.

:06:42.:06:47.

Just last month, the Queen severed her links to 25

:06:48.:06:49.

organisations she'd been patron of for decades.

:06:50.:06:52.

Palace officials insist the Queen is up and about and she hasn't been

:06:53.:06:55.

As head of state, she continues to deal with the government

:06:56.:07:00.

The Queen is clearly doing all she can to get rid

:07:01.:07:04.

of a lingering cold, rather than make it worse.

:07:05.:07:06.

Peter Hunt, BBC News, Buckingham Palace.

:07:07.:07:10.

Five men have been arrested in Oldham after two girls

:07:11.:07:13.

from the same family were killed in an apparent hit-and-run,

:07:14.:07:16.

leaving one dead and the other fighting for her life in hospital.

:07:17.:07:19.

12-year-old Helina Kotlarova was killed when crossing the road

:07:20.:07:21.

Eye-witnesses said the girls were holding hands at the time.

:07:22.:07:25.

Today's family gathering should have been a celebration.

:07:26.:07:35.

The flowers laid here are for 12-year-old Helina Kotlarova,

:07:36.:07:41.

killed in an apparent hit-and-run crash last night, a crash that also

:07:42.:07:45.

left her 11-year-old cousin critically ill.

:07:46.:07:50.

The girls had crossed it to buy some crisps from the local shop.

:07:51.:07:57.

They were with a bigger group, more cousins and sisters,

:07:58.:08:00.

but they'd already made the return journey.

:08:01.:08:01.

The two girls held hands and stepped into the road.

:08:02.:08:06.

She was on the floor, she had blood all over her face,

:08:07.:08:10.

and I was touching her, I was trying to see if she's

:08:11.:08:12.

going to breathe or something, but she couldn't breathe or nothing.

:08:13.:08:16.

And I've seen her face, this face was all, you know, bleeding and...

:08:17.:08:19.

This evening, Greater Manchester Police confirmed they'd arrested

:08:20.:08:34.

five men on suspicion of dangerous driving.

:08:35.:08:36.

All remain in custody for questioning.

:08:37.:08:37.

For the family, no news will soften the grief.

:08:38.:08:39.

It's just hard to believe that she's gone, because she was too

:08:40.:08:42.

young and she still have, like, life still.

:08:43.:08:46.

Tonight, tributes continue to be laid at the scene -

:08:47.:08:49.

a reminder of one life cut tragically short and prayers

:08:50.:08:51.

Syrian activists say government forces have again bombarded

:08:52.:09:02.

a rebel-held area north-west of the capital, Damascus.

:09:03.:09:05.

Opposition groups warned yesterday that they would abandon

:09:06.:09:07.

the ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey three days ago

:09:08.:09:09.

There have been delays in attending to emergency ambulance calls

:09:10.:09:19.

across London after the service's computer system crashed on one

:09:20.:09:22.

Staff in the London Ambulance control room had to log calls

:09:23.:09:26.

using pen and paper for nearly five hours overnight.

:09:27.:09:28.

New Year's Eve, hundreds of thousands of people pour

:09:29.:09:39.

onto the streets of the capital, creating the busiest

:09:40.:09:42.

night of the year for the London Ambulance Service.

:09:43.:09:46.

Its control room keeps watch over more than 600 square miles

:09:47.:09:48.

and 7 million people, using a sophisticated

:09:49.:09:50.

But, just after midnight, that system failed.

:09:51.:10:00.

The computer crash meant that all call details

:10:01.:10:02.

Call handlers couldn't see where the ambulances were.

:10:03.:10:06.

They had to use radios to contact paramedics.

:10:07.:10:09.

We do deal with the most critically ill and seriously ill patients

:10:10.:10:16.

first, and we continued to do that last night.

:10:17.:10:19.

Obviously, I'd like to apologise to any patients who did

:10:20.:10:22.

have a slightly extended waiting time while we were dealing

:10:23.:10:24.

The London Ambulance Service says because it has no computer record,

:10:25.:10:30.

it doesn't know exactly how many calls it dealt with last night.

:10:31.:10:34.

These were some of the incidents they attended, but there

:10:35.:10:37.

If the system fails at a time when there is huge pressure

:10:38.:10:44.

on the system, when, for example, there was a major

:10:45.:10:46.

disaster or a terrorist attack, we're going to be in really serious

:10:47.:10:49.

trouble, so we've really got to make sure, the London Ambulance Service

:10:50.:10:52.

has got to make sure, that this system

:10:53.:10:54.

Emergency call handlers here are trained to dispatch

:10:55.:10:59.

Extra staff had already been drafted in for the New Year celebrations.

:11:00.:11:06.

But the failure of their multi-million pound computer system

:11:07.:11:10.

on the busiest night of the year is now the subject of

:11:11.:11:13.

The system was restored by 5:30 this morning and is now working normally,

:11:14.:11:19.

but it may be a while before we know how many patients didn't get

:11:20.:11:23.

care when they needed it because ambulances couldn't get

:11:24.:11:25.

The Government's announced that the new 12-sided ?1 coin

:11:26.:11:34.

It replaces the current round coin which will cease to be

:11:35.:11:39.

It's being changed to protect it from counterfeiters.

:11:40.:11:43.

New designs have also been unveiled for the ?2 coin

:11:44.:11:45.

has been issued for Scotland, Northern Ireland, the north

The Met Office are warning of a cold snap that will bring ice

With all the sport, here's Ollie Foster

There were two matches in the Premier League,

:12:11.:12:14.

highlights of all the weekend's games are on Match of the Day 2

straight after the news but, if you want to know today's results

:12:18.:12:20.

Olivier Giroud scored a wonder goal to help Arsenal beat Crystal Palace

:12:21.:12:27.

The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger called it a work of art.

:12:28.:12:32.

The French striker's flying backheel was the first in a 2-0 win that sees

:12:33.:12:35.

them moves up to third in the table.

:12:36.:12:38.

Tottenham are a point behind Arsenal in fourth after beating Watford

:12:39.:12:41.

Harry Kane and Dele Alli scored two goals each.

:12:42.:12:45.

They face leaders Chelsea in their next match on Wednesday.

:12:46.:12:52.

In rugby union's Aviva Premiership, Champions Saracens are one point

:12:53.:12:54.

behind the leaders Wasps after they beat Leicester

:12:55.:12:56.

Sarrie's Owen Farrell scored all their points.

:12:57.:13:00.

The Tigers defeat was compounded by another injury for Manu Tuilagi.

:13:01.:13:03.

He has been ruled out of England's Six Nations training camp.

:13:04.:13:05.

Here's our sports correspondent Katie Gornall.

:13:06.:13:16.

How many premiership teams would like to listen in on this? Saracens

:13:17.:13:21.

are the envy of many, a team that has conquered all, both at home and

:13:22.:13:26.

in Europe. But Welford Road is Lester's fortress. Watching was

:13:27.:13:30.

Eddie Jones, and, with the Six Nations looming, much of his

:13:31.:13:34.

attention was focused on Tuilagi. But the injury prone centre made

:13:35.:13:40.

little more than a cameo, another come back cut short. In a first half

:13:41.:13:46.

dominated by the boot, they traded penalties, with Owen Williams

:13:47.:13:49.

putting Leicester level, 6-6 at the break. Neither side really looked

:13:50.:13:53.

like scoring a try, but maybe that was part of Owen Farrell's plan to

:13:54.:13:57.

spring a surprise. With one tin of his foot, the stage was clear. It

:13:58.:14:02.

was a dominant performance from the fly-half, who would go on to score

:14:03.:14:07.

all of Saracens' wants. Better news for the boss. The Tigers will try to

:14:08.:14:13.

claw their way back, but Saracens's defence held firm for a rare win at
