reporting these sorts of offences is not that they are not encouraged to | :00:00. | :00:00.
do so. Quite the reverse, they are. We need to make sure those lessages | :00:00. | :00:00.
are clear. Questions to the Minister for Women and Equalities, Vhcky | :00:07. | :00:10.
Foxcroft. Question number one, Mr Speaker. | :00:11. | :00:18.
Thank you, Mr Speaker. We w`nt to provide all young people with a | :00:19. | :00:27.
curriculum that prepares thdm to succeed in modern Britain, that is | :00:28. | :00:31.
why we want to make sure th`t sex and relationship education really is | :00:32. | :00:34.
fit for the world the children live in today and I agree we need to look | :00:35. | :00:38.
at how schools deliver high,quality and age-appropriate sex and | :00:39. | :00:41.
relationship education. We `re carefully considering all the | :00:42. | :00:45.
options including updating our guidance and I will give an update | :00:46. | :00:49.
shortly. The women's and eqtalities select committee has recommdnded | :00:50. | :00:53.
that the government and meant that keeping children safe in edtcation | :00:54. | :00:57.
guidance, to include the issue of sexual harassment and sexual | :00:58. | :01:00.
violence in schools. When does the government plan to release the | :01:01. | :01:04.
updated guidance? And will the government consults with spdcialists | :01:05. | :01:09.
working in the field of sextal harassment and violence agahnst | :01:10. | :01:09.
women and girls? I agree we need to look at how we | :01:10. | :01:17.
make sure this guidance is up-to-date. From my perspective the | :01:18. | :01:21.
key thing is making sure our young people have the right inforlation | :01:22. | :01:23.
that they need, that they gdt the right advice. And that throtgh this | :01:24. | :01:28.
guidance and quality of teaching we have in schools, we have thd right | :01:29. | :01:32.
attitudes of a young generation growing up in our country. She is | :01:33. | :01:35.
absolutely right to highlight the need to get that done effectively. | :01:36. | :01:41.
That is what I intend to do. The select committee report the | :01:42. | :01:44.
honourable lady referred to uncovered a shocking truth that most | :01:45. | :01:50.
girls in secondary education had suffered physical or verbal sexual | :01:51. | :01:54.
abuse. Four select committeds are now calling for sex and rel`tionship | :01:55. | :01:58.
education to be made compulsory what more evidence is the mhnister | :01:59. | :02:04.
looking for? Minister. Again, I don't disagree with the points she | :02:05. | :02:09.
makes. The women and equality select committee report into this `rea was | :02:10. | :02:13.
an excellent report that will - we will shortly be responding to. I | :02:14. | :02:17.
talked about the nature of what we will need to look at. There are also | :02:18. | :02:22.
questions in relation to wh`t this comprises, how it is taught, high | :02:23. | :02:27.
quality, and how she suggests, where it is taught and the breadth of | :02:28. | :02:32.
schools we expect it to be taught in. Nine out of ten secondary school | :02:33. | :02:36.
teachers say they have seen children bullied in relation to sexu`l | :02:37. | :02:41.
harassment. It is totally unacceptable. But we do need to make | :02:42. | :02:44.
sure that as we take the next step forward on this that we do ht in a | :02:45. | :02:48.
thoughtful, measured approach that responds to today's problem. Thank | :02:49. | :02:51.
you Mr Speaker, I would likd to thank the women parliamentarians and | :02:52. | :02:55.
campaigners that come beford us to get equality and justice in this | :02:56. | :02:59.
country. I am sure all of us want to take this forward. Good. Thd | :03:00. | :03:04.
secretary of state has an Adam Rumble record in her support of sex | :03:05. | :03:08.
and relationship education `nd I welcome the comments today ,- has an | :03:09. | :03:09.
admirable record. Having healthy friendships hs the | :03:10. | :03:16.
cornerstone, with others, in preventing a abuse, hate crhme and | :03:17. | :03:22.
violence. This is supported by five separate committees and all of the | :03:23. | :03:27.
leading charities. Could be secretary of state tell us when she | :03:28. | :03:29.
will introduce sex and relationship education for all children, from Key | :03:30. | :03:33.
stage one, regardless of whdre they are educated? | :03:34. | :03:37.
I would like to welcome her to her role, particularly as she is the MP | :03:38. | :03:44.
who represents my hometown of Rotherham, and I can assure her it | :03:45. | :03:49.
is important we make sure the different ages that children need to | :03:50. | :03:52.
start understanding about relationships, means that what we | :03:53. | :03:57.
are teaching them in schools is age-appropriate. It is mand`tory for | :03:58. | :04:02.
all maintained secondary schools to do sex and relationship education. | :04:03. | :04:06.
Primary schools have more flexibility, but she is right to | :04:07. | :04:09.
highlight that if we want to get this right, we need to look at | :04:10. | :04:20.
starting at an earlier age. Some women might be forgiven for thinking | :04:21. | :04:23.
that every day is actually International Men's Day. But this | :04:24. | :04:30.
year, it is in fact on the 09th of November and the theme is m`king a | :04:31. | :04:33.
difference for men and boys. This year, there will be focused on the | :04:34. | :04:39.
important issue of men's suhcide. It will be up to backbenchers to bid | :04:40. | :04:44.
for Parliamentary time on this, I would encourage them to do this and | :04:45. | :04:50.
support any initiatives to support gender equality. The absolute she | :04:51. | :04:58.
has no plans. Perhaps, her department should take International | :04:59. | :05:02.
Men's Day as seriously as the Prime Minister does. The Prime Minister | :05:03. | :05:06.
says, I recognise the importance of this event, including men's suicide, | :05:07. | :05:13.
men's health and under underperformance of boys in schools. | :05:14. | :05:18.
Why is International Men's Day not as important to the equalithes | :05:19. | :05:22.
minister as it is to the Prhme Minister? He is being a little bit | :05:23. | :05:27.
unfair in his comments. The role of the government equalities office is | :05:28. | :05:31.
to tackle inequality where dver we find it and as parents of sons are | :05:32. | :05:36.
condoned this country, incltding myself, will all be concerndd about | :05:37. | :05:41.
these issues, but I am award that there are parts of the world where | :05:42. | :05:47.
girls are routinely subjectdd to genital mutilation, forced larriage | :05:48. | :05:51.
and sexual violence and for me, equality is not a 0-sum gamd. Would | :05:52. | :05:56.
the Minister agree with me that International Men's Day would give | :05:57. | :05:59.
an opportunity for men who were fathers and daughters to express | :06:00. | :06:03.
concerns such as mothers datghters might have to wait another 30 years | :06:04. | :06:08.
for equal pay or to give melber platform to express concerns as to | :06:09. | :06:11.
why there continues to be a problem in this country and abroad of | :06:12. | :06:16.
violence against women and girls? He is absolutely right, but | :06:17. | :06:21.
International Men's Day in the UK does take a very gender inclusive | :06:22. | :06:24.
approach and therefore belidves that issues affecting women and girls are | :06:25. | :06:29.
also resolved. He makes an hmportant point about the gender pay gap and | :06:30. | :06:33.
we welcome reports that the gender pay gap has fallen again and is at | :06:34. | :06:38.
the lowest rate it has ever been. But he is right to say that, while | :06:39. | :06:42.
focusing on the important issues that International Men's Dax | :06:43. | :06:45.
reasons, we must never forgdt all the women around the world who are | :06:46. | :06:51.
suffering every single day. In seeking ways to celebrate | :06:52. | :06:55.
International Woman's Day, no doubt the Minister has looked at countries | :06:56. | :06:59.
around the world to see how they do that best. Which countries celebrate | :07:00. | :07:03.
International Men's Day best and will she take the example? There are | :07:04. | :07:12.
many countries that celebrate International Men's Day and there | :07:13. | :07:15.
are various different ways they do that, focusing on health and | :07:16. | :07:18.
well-being, highlighting tstnami screaming Asian against men and | :07:19. | :07:22.
promoting gender equality. This creates a safer world for everybody | :07:23. | :07:30.
and it is always to be commdnded. -- high racing discrimination `gainst | :07:31. | :07:42.
men. Women are killed by thdir partners every week and we need | :07:43. | :07:46.
action to tackle inequality. Does the Minister agree that we need | :07:47. | :07:51.
campaigns to tackle misogynx and sexist attitudes and that mdn have | :07:52. | :07:57.
crucial roles to play in thhs? She is absolutely right to point out | :07:58. | :08:02.
that last year, 81 women were killed by violent partners are ex-partners | :08:03. | :08:06.
and in fact, 19 men were killed by violent partners are ex-partners as | :08:07. | :08:11.
well. That is why this government is absolutely committed to tackling | :08:12. | :08:14.
violence against women and girls. We have put more money into thhs than | :08:15. | :08:18.
ever before and we will not rest until this happens. The govdrnment | :08:19. | :08:30.
will make no further changes to the pension age or pay financial redress | :08:31. | :08:35.
in lieu of pension. ?1.1 billion has already been committed to ldssen the | :08:36. | :08:39.
impact of changes on those who will be most affected so that no one will | :08:40. | :08:43.
experience a change of more than 18 months. It is clear that thd pension | :08:44. | :08:48.
campaigning women and the m`ny supporters agree that the government | :08:49. | :08:55.
has not done enough. Will you publish the impact of these changes | :08:56. | :09:00.
and any transitional changes at the time of the 2011 act and in the | :09:01. | :09:07.
period since? This government has made ?1.1 billion worth of | :09:08. | :09:09.
transitional arrangements available because of these changes. It is | :09:10. | :09:14.
really important to recognise that this is about and doing a hhstoric | :09:15. | :09:19.
unfairness, equalising the state pension age. I think that is | :09:20. | :09:22.
something both men and women should be welcoming. The SNP commissioned | :09:23. | :09:31.
independent research which found that the inequality is facing many | :09:32. | :09:39.
women could be rectified if the UK implements the recommendations in | :09:40. | :09:43.
this report for the sum of 8 billion, rather than the UK | :09:44. | :09:47.
Government previously cited 30 billion. Will seek out her | :09:48. | :09:50.
colleagues in the Treasury to private roads this ahead of the | :09:51. | :09:57.
Autumn Statement? There havd been a range of potential options put | :09:58. | :10:00.
forward by a number of diffdrent campaigns. What is clear is that | :10:01. | :10:07.
hasn't been anything signifhcantly aims at those who are suffering | :10:08. | :10:12.
under the changes. None of these have been affordable at unacceptable | :10:13. | :10:20.
costs of the taxpayer. We h`ve said we will issue a public constltation | :10:21. | :10:27.
on how best to provide legal protection against caste | :10:28. | :10:31.
discrimination later this ydar. I know my honourable friend t`ke this | :10:32. | :10:35.
seriously and has representdd his position as a's views in thhs. Thank | :10:36. | :10:41.
you. In excess of 85% of Brhtish Hindus consider having castd as a | :10:42. | :10:49.
protected characteristic in equality legislation unnecessarily, hll | :10:50. | :10:52.
considered and divisive. But he confirmed that in the forthcoming | :10:53. | :10:58.
legislation, you will look `t all measures, including abolition of | :10:59. | :11:04.
caste? This will be an open consultation. We know and understand | :11:05. | :11:09.
how very sensitive and emothve this subject areas and also that there | :11:10. | :11:12.
are very strong opinions on either side of it, so we need to look at | :11:13. | :11:17.
how we can provide the best and the necessary level of legal protection | :11:18. | :11:22.
against caste discrimination. That result will help us in form what we | :11:23. | :11:27.
do to provide the appropriate legal protection. Within the procdss, can | :11:28. | :11:31.
the Minister further outlind what steps have been taking | :11:32. | :11:35.
diplomatically to combat caste discrimination and is there an | :11:36. | :11:37.
explanation of how successftl these steps have been? My own Dep`rtment | :11:38. | :11:44.
for International Development, working hand-in-hand with the | :11:45. | :11:48.
Foreign Office, does huge work not only to advocate, but also take | :11:49. | :11:52.
action on the ground to help groups who are fighting for equality, | :11:53. | :11:56.
including fighting against caste discrimination. We do that hn | :11:57. | :12:00.
countries where it is most prevalent. As he will be aw`re, | :12:01. | :12:04.
these are generational issuds that take time to slowly shift, but we | :12:05. | :12:15.
are aware we need to keep ptshing. A diverse boardroom that refldcts its | :12:16. | :12:19.
customers and wider society is likely to perform better and make | :12:20. | :12:24.
better decisions. The government is supportive of the private ldd | :12:25. | :12:26.
initiative cheered by Sir John Parker, who is currently considering | :12:27. | :12:32.
how to increase ethnic diversity in FTSE 100 companies and we expect the | :12:33. | :12:35.
group to report on their findings next month. Less than 4% of | :12:36. | :12:44.
directors in 150 FTSE largest companies have ethnic minorhty | :12:45. | :12:47.
background. Other government support a target of increasing the | :12:48. | :12:51.
percentage of board members or directors with BAME backgrotnds to | :12:52. | :13:02.
10% by 2021? My honourable friend is right to point out this unsdttling | :13:03. | :13:07.
statistic, but as with the fantastic work to get more women on board we | :13:08. | :13:12.
support the principles of increasing the ethnic diversity of FTSD largest | :13:13. | :13:19.
companies. We think there is a really strong business keys were | :13:20. | :13:21.
better board diversity, but we need to tackle the root cause, which is | :13:22. | :13:26.
why we have established a rdview to look at the obstacles faced by | :13:27. | :13:33.
business in developing BAME talent across the board. It is a lhttle | :13:34. | :13:41.
disappointing that the government hasn't put as much resources into | :13:42. | :13:50.
developing the review, but there has been a significant drop in diversity | :13:51. | :13:53.
on board since the government commissioned the Park Review. Many | :13:54. | :13:58.
organisations, such as execttive leadership Council, has board | :13:59. | :14:06.
members of ethnic minorities ready to hit the board running. Whll the | :14:07. | :14:10.
Minister work with me to reverse the trends? We're happy to work with | :14:11. | :14:15.
anybody who wants to see grdater board diversity, but greater | :14:16. | :14:19.
diversity in business right the way through the pipeline. The government | :14:20. | :14:22.
is clear we want absolutely everybody to reach their full | :14:23. | :14:26.
potential in life, no matter what background, gender or race they come | :14:27. | :14:30.
from. Valuing diversity in the workplace is it's just the right | :14:31. | :14:34.
thing to do, our economy can afford to waste the talents of any | :14:35. | :14:43.
individual. Increasing the number of women in STEM industries isn't just | :14:44. | :14:47.
vital for our economic growth, is also part of our mission to | :14:48. | :14:53.
eliminate the gender pay gap, so we supporting girls to choose STEM | :14:54. | :14:56.
subjects and careers, by improving the quality of teaching of STEM Star | :14:57. | :15:01.
projects and also raising awareness of just how exciting and valuable | :15:02. | :15:08.
STEM careers can be for our young people, through STEM ambass`dors and | :15:09. | :15:14.
publish online guidance to xour daughters' future. The East Coast | :15:15. | :15:19.
energy internship is a new scheme supported by the Royal Acaddmy of | :15:20. | :15:23.
engineering. As a result of undertaking one of their | :15:24. | :15:29.
internships, Felicity, a sttdent at Lowestoft sixth form Collegd, is now | :15:30. | :15:33.
pursuing a career in offshore renewables. Would she agree that | :15:34. | :15:38.
such schemes should be promoted more widely, so that everyone, rdgardless | :15:39. | :15:42.
of gender and background, c`n realise their career ambitions? I | :15:43. | :15:46.
strongly support what he has just said and done well aware of all the | :15:47. | :15:50.
work that has been going on in his local community to encouragd girls | :15:51. | :15:56.
to get into STEM, and his own constituents, who is a shinhng | :15:57. | :15:59.
example of the great steps girls can make ones they follow this path I | :16:00. | :16:03.
agree with them and will be promoting a range of fantastic | :16:04. | :16:07.
opportunities to encourage lore young people, particularly girls, to | :16:08. | :16:14.
follow her example. Men continue to dominate fields with the best | :16:15. | :16:22.
earning potentials. In 2013, nearly 13,000 men started engineerhng | :16:23. | :16:23.
apprenticeships, while only 400 women did. Will the Minister commit | :16:24. | :16:35.
to achieving 50% of girls for STEM apprenticeships? We have sedn an | :16:36. | :16:42.
improvement in getting girls to take STEM subjects at GCSE. It's only get | :16:43. | :16:48.
to a level that we see boys still do more maths and girls. We nedd to | :16:49. | :16:54.
make sure we improve those statistics but also make sure that | :16:55. | :16:58.
the careers advice girls ard getting that can encourage them to follow | :16:59. | :17:09.
these parts is strengthened as well. The UK the government continues to | :17:10. | :17:20.
spend ?50 million a year to support sick and disabled people. This is | :17:21. | :17:23.
more than other countries stch as Germany, France and the USA. There | :17:24. | :17:30.
has been no publication on ` long-awaited Green paper to map out | :17:31. | :17:34.
what employment support will be made available for those with | :17:35. | :17:38.
disabilities, therefore, can the Minister provide an expirathon for | :17:39. | :17:40.
this continued delay and dods she agree that this does not look like | :17:41. | :17:44.
the actions of the government providing, and I quote, an dconomy | :17:45. | :17:51.
that works for everyone. As he will know, we are soon publishing the | :17:52. | :17:54.
Green paper that will explore a whole range of options for long term | :17:55. | :17:59.
reform across different sectors The disabilities Minister is working | :18:00. | :18:02.
hard to make sure that is coming soon. We're going to target the | :18:03. | :18:06.
factors that contribute to the disability employment gap and engage | :18:07. | :18:11.
with disabled people, their representative organisations and a | :18:12. | :18:14.
wide range of stakeholders. There will be the opportunity for members | :18:15. | :18:17.
to feed into the consultation process and I urge them to do so. | :18:18. | :18:23.
Thank you. Disabled people `re twice as likely to live in povertx as a | :18:24. | :18:28.
result of their condition, lade worse by this government's ?28 | :18:29. | :18:35.
billion Social Security cuts, to 3.7 million disabled people since 2 12. | :18:36. | :18:39.
Sick and disabled people ard more likely to be hit by Social Security | :18:40. | :18:46.
sanctions and forced to use food banks, as Ken Loach's latest film | :18:47. | :18:50.
has shown. The link between the punitive sanctions and the rise in | :18:51. | :18:55.
food bank use has been shown. What action is the Minister taking the | :18:56. | :18:59.
DWP colleagues to tackle thdse injustices? As she knows, this | :19:00. | :19:06.
government is committed to providing support for people who need it, | :19:07. | :19:12.
reflected in the fact that spending in this TV will be higher in real | :19:13. | :19:19.
terms every year by 2020 th`n in 2010. She raises the subject of the | :19:20. | :19:24.
film, and I have to say my first visit as minister was to a job | :19:25. | :19:28.
centre in Newcastle. I have seen the film and the people I met at the job | :19:29. | :19:32.
centre, the front line workdrs, they have no recognition of the portrayal | :19:33. | :19:38.
in the film. It raises important issues, which we shall debate, but I | :19:39. | :19:44.
actually think we have to rdmember that was a dramatic interprdtation | :19:45. | :19:47.
and I have to say I recognise none of the portrayal is of the DWP staff | :19:48. | :19:51.
shown. Number one, Mr Speaker. Mr Speaker, | :19:52. | :20:04.
this government has been cldarly want to build a country that works | :20:05. | :20:07.
for everyone and that is whx we are determined to close the gender pay | :20:08. | :20:11.
gap. I am very pleased that the office for National statisthcs has | :20:12. | :20:13.
released figures recently showing that the gender pay gap has narrowed | :20:14. | :20:20.
significantly from 19.3% to 18. %. It reflects the hard work on this by | :20:21. | :20:24.
so many people, not least the business community itself. Ht | :20:25. | :20:28.
reminds us that if we will be closing the gap and closes | :20:29. | :20:32.
completely, and to drive forward more progress. We have extended | :20:33. | :20:38.
flexible working, a new system of parental leave and we are | :20:39. | :20:41.
introducing a mandatory gender pay gap reporting for large employers | :20:42. | :20:48.
from April next year. Barondss as and painful injury councils to be | :20:49. | :20:54.
abolished because of the unfair way people are treated. Will thd | :20:55. | :20:58.
government support and Cox `nd make sure that Muslim women enjox the | :20:59. | :21:03.
same protection under the l`w that other women do and do not fdel | :21:04. | :21:07.
pressurised to having their cases determined by a sharia council | :21:08. | :21:12.
rather than a court? I want to reassure him that this is of the | :21:13. | :21:17.
utmost importance. Now therd are concerns about sharia counchls | :21:18. | :21:22.
including those raised by v`n Cox. We take and Sam Suzi -- by Baroness | :21:23. | :21:30.
Cox. We will continue to consider the issue. You will be award the | :21:31. | :21:36.
review was launched in May by the previous Home Secretary, now Prime | :21:37. | :21:42.
Minister. Mr Speaker, figurds just out from NHS digital have found that | :21:43. | :21:46.
28% of women aged 16-24 havd a mental health condition. Al`rmingly, | :21:47. | :21:51.
the faults of self harm amongst this age group have travelled between | :21:52. | :21:59.
2007-2014, to 20% -- have trebled. A survey of 35 mental health trust, | :22:00. | :22:06.
Harry -- carried out by Agenda show that just one of them had a very | :22:07. | :22:10.
specific women's only mental health strategy, what action is thd | :22:11. | :22:15.
Minister taken to address this issue? All of us as constittency MPs | :22:16. | :22:21.
perceive these issues locally. It is actually why I think it is very | :22:22. | :22:23.
worthwhile that the house is having a backbench debate later on the | :22:24. | :22:27.
broader topic of young people and mental health. We have a long | :22:28. | :22:32.
journey to go on this country in delivering on this ambition that we | :22:33. | :22:35.
all have of making sure that mental health provision is on a par with | :22:36. | :22:39.
the rest of our health care provision in this country. @s she | :22:40. | :22:43.
highlights, that will include understanding the specific, | :22:44. | :22:47.
different levels of mental health challenges the different part of our | :22:48. | :22:51.
communities face. Women and girls being 50% of that. Thank yot, Mr | :22:52. | :22:55.
Speaker. Report this week indicate that e-mail entrepreneurs stch as | :22:56. | :23:01.
clover Lewis struggled to access start-up capital where as m`le | :23:02. | :23:06.
entrepreneurs the bar to 90$ of all start-up funding available. The | :23:07. | :23:10.
entrepreneurs' return on investment is much better than men on `verage, | :23:11. | :23:16.
what steps are -- is she taking to address this anomaly? Thank you Mr | :23:17. | :23:22.
Speaker, am pleased that Clover Lewis was mentioned, she grdets | :23:23. | :23:25.
swimwear for women who have undergone surgery as a result of a | :23:26. | :23:29.
mastectomy that she creates for Amaya. We are committed to | :23:30. | :23:31.
supporting women growing, businesses. -- that she cre`tes | :23:32. | :23:40.
swimwear. Start-up loans colpany, 40% of those loans have givdn being | :23:41. | :23:47.
given to women, providing ftnding to 13,500 women and over ?30 mhllion. | :23:48. | :23:54.
Will the Secretary of State welcome the women into tech initiathve, | :23:55. | :23:56.
which shows how many women can get into business in Iraq? Will she help | :23:57. | :24:03.
our campaign to improve the humorously girls and young women? -- | :24:04. | :24:10.
improve the humorously. That is you get. You numeracy. You have a | :24:11. | :24:17.
question about STEM, making sure that girls do those sorts of | :24:18. | :24:22.
subjects. It is not just important for engineering, these are subjects, | :24:23. | :24:27.
in particular, that open up all sorts of tools for that is what it | :24:28. | :24:33.
is initiatives have thought of that are in place to live on those | :24:34. | :24:46.
aspirations are seen as a l`ck of progress in gender violence across | :24:47. | :24:48.
the scientific community in business and academia. What are you `nd your | :24:49. | :24:50.
department doing to remove barriers faced by women and to make short | :24:51. | :24:55.
work is integrated with ongoing efforts in the university sdctor, | :24:56. | :24:59.
particularly if the Lynn Sw`nn? He is right. Business needs to work | :25:00. | :25:06.
hand-in-hand with government on this business Council has been enhanced | :25:07. | :25:10.
by this government now incltdes representatives and memberships in | :25:11. | :25:11.
science, engineering and construction industries. Th`t is | :25:12. | :25:16.
linked in with not only my departments of the Department for | :25:17. | :25:20.
business energy and industrhal strategy. We particularly wdlcome | :25:21. | :25:23.
the silver finish this like Athena SWAN. They doing so much to steadily | :25:24. | :25:26.
and progressively move agenda forward. Gypsies and travellers | :25:27. | :25:31.
suffer physically ill outcoles across a whole range of measures | :25:32. | :25:35.
that too many government departments and agencies are still not | :25:36. | :25:39.
recognising them as distinct ethnic groups in accordance with the 2 11 | :25:40. | :25:43.
census categorisation. What can the secretary of state do to encourage | :25:44. | :25:46.
the use of the 2011 categorhsation right across government, national | :25:47. | :25:53.
Honourable Lady is really lhke to Honourable Lady is really lhke to | :25:54. | :25:57.
raise is really important issue I know that the Women and Equ`lities | :25:58. | :26:01.
select committee has announced they will look at this precise issue and | :26:02. | :26:04.
they will do it with their customary vigour and intensity. We look very | :26:05. | :26:09.
forward very much to and wh`t they come up with. On my misogynx and | :26:10. | :26:13.
other use of online behaviotr is damaging young people's self-esteem | :26:14. | :26:16.
and has undermined their mental health. Does the Minister agree with | :26:17. | :26:20.
neither social media platforms must face up to their responsibilities to | :26:21. | :26:21.
keep young users safe onlind? The honourable gentleman makes an | :26:22. | :26:30.
absolutely excellent point, something all parents worry about | :26:31. | :26:32.
and social media platforms lust take some responsibility for this. We | :26:33. | :26:38.
invested almost half ?1 million in the safe internet Centre to provide | :26:39. | :26:40.
advice on how to keep children safe from this year. We are developing | :26:41. | :26:42.
cyber bullying guidance to schools cyber bullying guidance to schools | :26:43. | :26:47.
which will be published shortly The Secretary of State may be aware of | :26:48. | :26:51.
the closure of the UK LGBT showers, Broken Rainbow in August thhs year, | :26:52. | :26:59.
mirroring his company -- LGBT charity. Will she worked with me to | :27:00. | :27:03.
put pressure on the public administration committee and the | :27:04. | :27:05.
charities commission to havd a full review of this and make surd that | :27:06. | :27:09.
the LGBT community in this country have access to domestic abuse | :27:10. | :27:13.
support? I am sure I am verx happy to talk to the honourable l`dy | :27:14. | :27:16.
further about the specific hssue that she has just raised, which is | :27:17. | :27:24.
of concern. Last night I was at the Pink News awards which celebrates a | :27:25. | :27:27.
huge amount of work going on on LGBT writes. This work can continue. | :27:28. | :27:34.
The new head of John Lewis, the head of the National crime agencx, the | :27:35. | :27:40.
Prime Minister as with any luck the next president of the United States | :27:41. | :27:43.
of America, all women at thd top of their field. With my honour`ble | :27:44. | :27:48.
friend agrees with strong women at the head of organisations is one of | :27:49. | :27:52.
the best ways to encourage women into professions and what is she | :27:53. | :27:56.
doing to promote this? -- would my honourable friend agrees. I am | :27:57. | :27:59.
delighted to do so, we cannot overestimate the value of all models | :28:00. | :28:03.
at every level and sexy filhng girls and the women to follow. We now have | :28:04. | :28:07.
more women on board than evdr before -- every level and offering girls | :28:08. | :28:12.
and women. Thank you, Mr Speaker. Coming back | :28:13. | :28:25.
to the STEM subjects and thd fantastic work in west Cumbria to | :28:26. | :28:27.
encourage women into the media industry. If you recognise ht as an | :28:28. | :28:37.
absolutely level and I am the only woman in the room, sometimes only | :28:38. | :28:41.
one or two of us. What can xou encourage women to do to get the | :28:42. | :28:45.
senior level? It is about btilding the ladder at all levels. Wd talked | :28:46. | :28:49.
about the importance of STEL subjects of the National College, | :28:50. | :28:52.
one of them will be focusing on skills for the nuclear industry in | :28:53. | :28:55.
particular, that is the next stage of. Many of us have these mdetings | :28:56. | :29:01.
where we are one of the onlx women sat around the table. As has just | :29:02. | :29:06.
been set, used to play our role as role models encouraging that next | :29:07. | :29:10.
generation to aim high. Questions to the leader | :29:11. | :29:11. |
