Hello, I'm Philippa Thomas, this is Outside Source. | :00:09. | :00:12.
Donald Trump has come under fire from the last Republican politician | :00:13. | :00:15.
to be nominated for the White House - Mitt Romney, who challenged | :00:16. | :00:18.
Now Romney has made this dramatic public criticism of the man likely | :00:19. | :00:22.
The Foley, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump | :00:23. | :00:41.
University. But Donald Trump met in salt with insults, sneering at | :00:42. | :00:44.
Romney's failure to oust President Obama. I am not a fan of Barack | :00:45. | :00:49.
Obama and that was the reason I backed Mitt Romney. I backed him. | :00:50. | :00:54.
You can see how loyal he is coming he was begging for my endorsement. I | :00:55. | :00:57.
could've said, drop to your knees and he would have done. | :00:58. | :01:01.
One of the EU's most senior officials has warned that | :01:02. | :01:03.
economic migrants should not try to come to Europe. | :01:04. | :01:10.
North Korea responds with defiance to new UN sanctions, | :01:11. | :01:12.
by firing a volley of missiles into the sea. | :01:13. | :01:16.
And we have a report from Mexico where our correspondent met one of | :01:17. | :01:20.
the leading politicians vowing to take on the drug lords. | :01:21. | :01:36.
The last official Republican candidate for the US presidency has | :01:37. | :01:39.
said this year's Republican frontrunner Donald Trump would be | :01:40. | :01:41.
very bad for American workers and the American family, | :01:42. | :01:43.
and would plunge the United States into "grave recession". | :01:44. | :01:52.
A foreign policy magazine put it in a tweet: | :01:53. | :02:02.
Mitt Romney said that a Trump presidency would be very bad for | :02:03. | :02:08.
American workers and families. And that it would plunge the United | :02:09. | :02:12.
States into grave recession. Let's listen. If we make the right | :02:13. | :02:19.
choices, America's future will be even better than our past and better | :02:20. | :02:22.
than our present. On the other hand, if we make improvident choices, the | :02:23. | :02:29.
bright horizon I have described will not materialise. And let me put it | :02:30. | :02:34.
plainly, if we Republicans choose Donald Trump is our nominee, the | :02:35. | :02:39.
prospect for a safe and prosperous future is greatly diminished. But as | :02:40. | :02:47.
the Guardian's Paul Thomas got it right when he said this: | :02:48. | :02:54.
Could be. Trump as some high-profile backing. Let's look at this. | :02:55. | :03:05.
Sara Bayman, that is, who was running as vice president in 2008. | :03:06. | :03:13.
Then again, the man who picked as a running mate, McCain, has also been | :03:14. | :03:16.
tearing into Donald Trump, saying: And off a lot flying around. What | :03:17. | :03:41.
has Donald Trump had to say about it all tonight? | :03:42. | :03:59.
I backed him, and you can see how loyal he | :04:00. | :04:02.
is, he was begging for my endorsement. | :04:03. | :04:03.
I could've said, Mitt, drop to your knees and he would have | :04:04. | :04:06.
He was begging me, and did you see... | :04:07. | :04:10.
He said, I'm not big like him, he's a great businessman, | :04:11. | :04:13.
Well, since then I have done much better. | :04:14. | :04:16.
Catty Quay, it just gets more dramatic. What exactly is Mitt | :04:17. | :04:21.
Romney trying to achieve? Just when you thought this campaign could not | :04:22. | :04:25.
get more outlandish, you have these two Republicans, Donald Trump and | :04:26. | :04:30.
Mitt Romney, behaving more like my kids in the school yard. I think for | :04:31. | :04:37.
Mitt Romney, as for the GOP establishment, there is a sense of | :04:38. | :04:43.
panic setting in. What can we do to try to stop Donald Trump from | :04:44. | :04:45.
becoming the nominee? They do not like the guy, they do not like what | :04:46. | :04:48.
he is saying, and more importantly they feel that he cannot beat | :04:49. | :04:51.
Hillary Clinton and that they would lose the White House to the | :04:52. | :04:55.
Democrats for at least four years and any Supreme Court picks along | :04:56. | :05:00.
with that. They see this as an important moment in the political | :05:01. | :05:03.
process and he wants to weigh in on it. The trouble is, Mitt Romney is | :05:04. | :05:08.
not the most ideal messenger because four years ago he said the Donald | :05:09. | :05:11.
Trump was a fabulous businessman who had done great things for the | :05:12. | :05:16.
economy and America. And I can only issue that Mitt Romney laying into | :05:17. | :05:21.
Donald Trump will enrage Trump's supporters even more and they will | :05:22. | :05:24.
rally around him even tighter than they have done. And isn't that the | :05:25. | :05:28.
danger? The Trump narrative is, look, everyone is out to get me and | :05:29. | :05:32.
the establishment hates me, I am not an insider. This could actually | :05:33. | :05:38.
increase his support base. Yes. That specific thing could. The caveat is | :05:39. | :05:44.
that the establishment Republicans, people like John McCain and Mitt | :05:45. | :05:49.
Romney and others who have got together to fund an organisation to | :05:50. | :05:52.
try to stop Donald Trump are now actively pouring in money against | :05:53. | :05:57.
Donald Trump in two of the key states coming up in primary on March | :05:58. | :06:01.
the 15th in Florida and Ohio. The strategy for Republicans want to | :06:02. | :06:08.
stop Trump now seems to be, listen, we will deprive him of the 1237 | :06:09. | :06:13.
delegates he needs to have a majority to be our party's nominee | :06:14. | :06:17.
and we will do that by keeping the other candidates in the race and | :06:18. | :06:20.
letting them chip away at Donald Trump's lead. It is a risky bet but | :06:21. | :06:26.
I think they have not got many other options at the moment. And I guess | :06:27. | :06:31.
they have to take that bet with a thought about the convention in July | :06:32. | :06:35.
which is normally a prime-time coronation of the candidate and it | :06:36. | :06:39.
could look really nasty. Yes. Everyone is talking about chaos in | :06:40. | :06:42.
Cleveland at the moment at the end of July we will all be there. And, | :06:43. | :06:47.
there may or may not be by that stage a clear Republican nominee. If | :06:48. | :06:53.
we get to that stage and Donald Trump does not have the 1200 | :06:54. | :06:56.
delegates he needs, potentially you could have what is called a brokered | :06:57. | :07:02.
or open convention. Then all hell breaks loose because Republicans | :07:03. | :07:04.
have to negotiate over who they want to be a leader to be. And there is a | :07:05. | :07:09.
risk, a real risk for the Republican party that is Donald Trump's very, | :07:10. | :07:14.
very enthusiastic supporters, of whom there are millions in this | :07:15. | :07:17.
country, feel that this nomination has been snatched from them, they | :07:18. | :07:22.
will be furious with the Republican Party and that could lead to the | :07:23. | :07:27.
disintegration of the party. This is a highly volatile, highly risky time | :07:28. | :07:30.
for the Republican Party. You have to feel for Republicans at the | :07:31. | :07:33.
moment because they are watching this and thinking, what is the | :07:34. | :07:36.
future of our party? Katty Kay, thank you very much. | :07:37. | :07:49.
'Don't come to Europe in search of a better life.' That's | :07:50. | :07:51.
what the President of the European Council Donald Tusk | :07:52. | :07:53.
Our correspondent, Danny Savage is on the Greek -- Macedonian -- is on | :07:54. | :08:06.
the Greek and Macedonian border. At the border camp were grease meets in | :08:07. | :08:09.
Macedonia, growing number of people have had enough. They want to move | :08:10. | :08:12.
on but they cannot so today they protested. | :08:13. | :08:30.
This could go one of two ways, either red bricks are peacefully or | :08:31. | :08:36.
the police move in and shift them. My brother is sick and everything | :08:37. | :08:41.
here is disgusting. I do not feel like a human being any more because | :08:42. | :08:47.
I sleep in the middle of nowhere. Most here are Syrians and Iraqis who | :08:48. | :08:52.
say they are refugees fleeing war. But these mainly Moroccan men I met | :08:53. | :08:56.
at a service station are described by EU leaders as economic migrants. | :08:57. | :09:00.
They were told today not to waste their time and money trying to get | :09:01. | :09:05.
to Europe. They agreed. This 26-year-old wanted to remain | :09:06. | :09:13.
anonymous. I would say to the people who would like to come here, don't | :09:14. | :09:17.
come, don't lose your money and time and job. Back at the border, the | :09:18. | :09:23.
demonstration ended peacefully but the primitive living conditions here | :09:24. | :09:26.
are taking their toll. Children especially are falling sick. About | :09:27. | :09:32.
40% of people here are under 15. This Syrian family have a 9-year-old | :09:33. | :09:36.
who is diabetic. And six-month-old twins who they have been told should | :09:37. | :09:40.
not travel any further. They are thinking of going back. A trickle of | :09:41. | :09:47.
people cross the migrant trail, just about keeping hopes alive. But this | :09:48. | :09:54.
crush developed this afternoon with children caught in it. It is | :09:55. | :09:58.
terrible. Everybody just wants to get across so they are just pushing. | :09:59. | :10:04.
It is making it tough for everyone. Discouraging economic meet Prince is | :10:05. | :10:08.
one thing but nearly all of these people do not fall into this | :10:09. | :10:13.
category. They are Europe's problem and current plans to deal with them | :10:14. | :10:16.
are not working. -- discouraging economic migrants is one thing. | :10:17. | :10:20.
Let's turn to North Korea now and its continuing pursuit | :10:21. | :10:22.
We talked yesterday about new international | :10:23. | :10:25.
Well North Korea's response was to fire short-range projectiles | :10:26. | :10:28.
Those missiles were fired from Wosnan and disappeared | :10:29. | :10:33.
Now let's show you Dandong over on the other side of the peninsula | :10:34. | :10:43.
where the enforcement of the sanctions could bite hardest. | :10:44. | :10:49.
That's one of the main routes for trade in and out of North Korea. | :10:50. | :10:53.
John Sudworth has been investigating how it's all kept under scrutiny, | :10:54. | :10:55.
If you want an illustration of the major flaw in all this talk about | :10:56. | :11:06.
tougher sanctions on North Korea, will there is none better than this. | :11:07. | :11:12.
This is a small Chinese port, full of trading boards and barges like | :11:13. | :11:17.
this one mirrored up alongside me. A stones throw from North Korea on the | :11:18. | :11:23.
other side of the watcher. And all day long, we have seen these waters | :11:24. | :11:28.
teeming with boats, many of them carrying North Korean flags and | :11:29. | :11:34.
bringing goods to and from. Just a short distance along the water we | :11:35. | :11:38.
have seen a large shipment of coal being unloaded. That is significant | :11:39. | :11:43.
because coal is a major source of hard cash for the North Korean | :11:44. | :11:48.
economy and it is now, as a result of the UN Security Council boat, | :11:49. | :11:54.
meant to be one of the newly sanctioned items. -- North Korean. | :11:55. | :12:04.
The new sections allow for the import of coal as long as the | :12:05. | :12:07.
proceeds do not go to fund the military but to assess that, you | :12:08. | :12:12.
would need China to have begun the new, tougher inspection regime they | :12:13. | :12:15.
have also promised. But there is little sign of that yet either. We | :12:16. | :12:21.
have even seen North Korean Coast Guard vessels tethered in friendly | :12:22. | :12:25.
embrace with the Chinese barges, exchanging goods. These bags, we're | :12:26. | :12:33.
told, contain some kind of metal were. Brought in from North Korea in | :12:34. | :12:40.
consignments of up to 1000 tonnes of time. -- metal ore. When we ask the | :12:41. | :12:45.
traders if they were worried by the toughened sanctions, one of them | :12:46. | :12:49.
laughed. This, he told us, will never stop. You have to say, if this | :12:50. | :12:54.
is evidence of China getting tough, then North Korea probably doesn't | :12:55. | :12:59.
feel too troubled by what has been decided by the UN Security Council. | :13:00. | :13:02.
The South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been denied | :13:03. | :13:04.
the right to appeal against his conviction for murder. | :13:05. | :13:08.
Prosecutors say that the country's constitutional court ruled | :13:09. | :13:12.
that the former Olympic champion had no chance of successfully | :13:13. | :13:15.
He was found guilty of shooting dead his girlfriend, | :13:16. | :13:18.
Pistorius will return to court in April for sentencing and faces | :13:19. | :13:26.
a minimum of fifteen years in prison for murder. | :13:27. | :13:29.
In a moment, I'll show you a report about a referendum in New Zealand | :13:30. | :13:33.
over a new national flag - but not everyone thinks the vote | :13:34. | :13:36.
A report from the Geneva motor show, where our correspondent says he is | :13:37. | :13:42.
feeling a little bit old. David Cameron has met the French | :13:43. | :13:54.
president in Paris for talks with the upcoming EU referendum the | :13:55. | :14:00.
topics at the top of their agenda. When it comes to terrorism, | :14:01. | :14:05.
security, reporters, I am absolutely convinced we are better off with a | :14:06. | :14:09.
stronger reformed European Union. And I will go on making those | :14:10. | :14:14.
arguments, drawing on my experience, not making hypothetical claims, but | :14:15. | :14:17.
dealing with the reality. And that is the point. People can compare | :14:18. | :14:21.
what we have now and the certainty of what we have nabbed with the | :14:22. | :14:26.
risks of the alternative. And it is simply not good enough for people to | :14:27. | :14:33.
want us to leave the European union not to ask question about what our | :14:34. | :14:35.
security relationship and trading relationships will be, about how we | :14:36. | :14:40.
will work from the outside of the European Union with the countries | :14:41. | :14:43.
inside the European Union. And that is the choice, between the certainty | :14:44. | :14:47.
we have today and risks coming from people who will not answer | :14:48. | :14:48.
questions. This is Outside Source live | :14:49. | :14:56.
from the BBC newsroom. Our lead story is, senior | :14:57. | :14:59.
Republican Mitt Romney has issued a scathing denunciation | :15:00. | :15:01.
of the frontrunner for the party's presidential nomination, | :15:02. | :15:04.
Donald Trump. Mr Romney said that he isn't | :15:05. | :15:05.
fit to be president. Trump says he is relevant. -- key is | :15:06. | :15:09.
irrelevant. Turkish police have shot and killed | :15:10. | :15:16.
two women who attacked officers with gunfire and a | :15:17. | :15:18.
grenade in Istanbul. A militant left-wing Turkish | :15:19. | :15:20.
group said in a statement A Ukrainian helicopter pilot | :15:21. | :15:22.
who is accused of murdering two Russian TV journalists says | :15:23. | :15:30.
she will go on hunger strike. Nadia Savchenko had planned | :15:31. | :15:35.
to deliver her final address to a Russian court today, | :15:36. | :15:39.
but was denied the chance when her BBC Ukrainian has | :15:40. | :15:42.
more details on that. These dramatic pictures | :15:43. | :15:47.
are on the BBC News app. They show at least 10 masked robbers | :15:48. | :15:56.
breaking into a gun store in Texas After pulling down the doors, | :15:57. | :16:00.
they run in, grabbing weapons from cases and stuffing | :16:01. | :16:05.
them into bags. The head of the British chamber of | :16:06. | :16:14.
commerce has said he believes the UK's long-term economic future could | :16:15. | :16:18.
be brighter outside the EU. He says that choosing to leave or not will | :16:19. | :16:22.
be tough. Let's show you what he said. You might say it is a choice | :16:23. | :16:27.
between the devil and the deep blue Sea is how he put it. The chamber of | :16:28. | :16:31.
commerce says it will not officially side with either side of the debate | :16:32. | :16:34.
because its membership is split on the issue. | :16:35. | :16:40.
Anthony Gould remembers the last time Britain voted on membership | :16:41. | :16:46.
of what was then the European Economic | :16:47. | :16:47.
The media entrepreneur from Kent voted yes 40 years ago but this time | :16:48. | :16:52.
he will be dancing to a different tune. | :16:53. | :16:57.
EU membership in the early years, it definitely helped. | :16:58. | :16:59.
But recently, there is so much regulation and difficulties | :17:00. | :17:04.
and that is why unfortunately I have come to the conclusion that it | :17:05. | :17:07.
would be in the interests of our business to | :17:08. | :17:09.
When it comes to the question of the European Union, | :17:10. | :17:16.
At today's conference of leading small | :17:17. | :17:23.
Yes, the majority still believe in is best but out might not | :17:24. | :17:32.
The negotiations the Prime Minister came back with were actually | :17:33. | :17:35.
inadequate and far short of what the BCC wanted. | :17:36. | :17:38.
Actually, on the balance of probabilities now, | :17:39. | :17:39.
Britain could have a bright future outside of the European Union, | :17:40. | :17:46.
as it would have done if we had stayed in with a reformed deal. | :17:47. | :17:49.
Both sides in the referendum debate would love to grab | :17:50. | :17:52.
But although there have been sceptical voices, | :17:53. | :18:01.
for other businesses, the tone is very | :18:02. | :18:02.
Carmaking in the UK employs 800,000 people. | :18:03. | :18:10.
Today, the SMMT trade body said 77% of their members backed Britain | :18:11. | :18:13.
We think being part of a reformed Europe and playing a role | :18:14. | :18:23.
in that reformation is really important for not only Europe | :18:24. | :18:26.
In London today, the German Finance Minister | :18:27. | :18:32.
was asked for his reaction should the UK leave. | :18:33. | :18:39.
LAUGHTER. BUT I HOPE WE WILL NOT. But I hope we will not. | :18:40. | :19:01.
Look, it is the decision of the British people, of course. | :19:02. | :19:03.
Business leaders left tonight after a day dominated by Europe. | :19:04. | :19:08.
Of course, they are also voters and will have their say on June | :19:09. | :19:11.
This is a story we have covered a lot. Apple's continuing battle with | :19:12. | :19:26.
the FBI over the iPhone from the San Bernardino shooter. Just to remind | :19:27. | :19:30.
you, 14 people died when the man and his wife attacked an office in San | :19:31. | :19:36.
Bernardino. Apple has now refused to release data from the phone. Apple's | :19:37. | :19:40.
business rivals have stepped into the fray on their side. It has been | :19:41. | :19:45.
reported that Google, Microsoft and other tech companies will be asking | :19:46. | :19:51.
a judge to support Apple. More now from Michelle Fleury in New York. | :19:52. | :19:57.
This means that all the tech companies are basically on one side, | :19:58. | :20:01.
and they all have this common interest, I suppose. It is | :20:02. | :20:07.
interesting to see competitors, the rest of the time, but on this issue | :20:08. | :20:11.
they are presenting a united front. It shows you the breadth of support | :20:12. | :20:16.
for Apple on this issue. It reads like a Who's Who of the tech world. | :20:17. | :20:21.
You mentioned Google, Twitter, Microsoft, and I can add Whatsapp, | :20:22. | :20:29.
snap chat, and Intel is expected to get involved. It is an amicus brief, | :20:30. | :20:33.
a filing often made by companies that might have an interest in the | :20:34. | :20:38.
outcome of a specific trial, where they can lend a specialist knowledge | :20:39. | :20:44.
to help the judge reach a decision. In this case, we are talking about | :20:45. | :20:49.
Sherry Perma, the judge who will rule on whether or not Apple is | :20:50. | :20:51.
right to appeal the decision that could force it to create a piece of | :20:52. | :20:57.
software that will allow it to disable its own password protection | :20:58. | :21:02.
system. The government says this is needed. They are relying on a | :21:03. | :21:09.
specific law, a fairly old law who will put together an argument that | :21:10. | :21:17.
the law, dating back to 1789, which was treated before the invention of | :21:18. | :21:21.
the light bulb and therefore is not appropriate and should not be used | :21:22. | :21:24.
in this case. I can tell it is going to get more and more obligated. We | :21:25. | :21:32.
brought you some pictures from the Geneva motor show today and we can | :21:33. | :21:37.
update you on a bit of retail therapy going on in there. Here we | :21:38. | :21:41.
are the Geneva motor show and quite frankly it is a great place to come | :21:42. | :21:47.
if, like me, you are getting on bit. Let's have a little bit of a look | :21:48. | :21:51.
around and see if there is anything here that might help me feel young | :21:52. | :21:55.
and energetic again. This might do the trick. The new begat it. Almost | :21:56. | :22:00.
as much power as two Formula 1 cars, with a top speed of 260 mph. But it | :22:01. | :22:06.
does cost 2.4 million euros. Better not. Maybe this is a better bet. The | :22:07. | :22:14.
new Alfa Romeo. It is beautiful, sleek and sporty. But for my | :22:15. | :22:19.
purposes, maybe it is a bit too civilised. | :22:20. | :22:29.
This is more like it. Just look at that styling. Pretty fast, too. But | :22:30. | :22:36.
where would I put the kids? OK, it is beautiful but let's be honest, if | :22:37. | :22:40.
I draw that I would look ridiculous. And I have spoken to my bank manager | :22:41. | :22:44.
and he says the best I could afford is something more like this. But you | :22:45. | :22:48.
can't fault a man for dreaming, can you? But there is something over | :22:49. | :22:59.
here I really like. Mexico's war against drug cartels have claimed | :23:00. | :23:02.
the lives of 160,000 people and a recent report states the authorities | :23:03. | :23:05.
are failing to investigate the brutality and violence of the | :23:06. | :23:10.
cartels. We recently travelled to Mexico to meet one of the leading | :23:11. | :23:13.
politicians who is willing to take them on. | :23:14. | :23:16.
In January of this year, less than 24 hours after taking office as the | :23:17. | :23:25.
mayor of a small-town 100 kilometres from the capital, Mexico City, | :23:26. | :23:28.
Gisela motor was shot dead. Her crime, speaking out against the | :23:29. | :23:49.
drug cartels. She has joined a long list of mayors executed for a very | :23:50. | :23:54.
to take on the cartels. 40 others have also been murdered. This is a | :23:55. | :24:01.
country under siege, traumatised by Joe Vallance. Enter Al Bronco, the | :24:02. | :24:09.
rebel. The new recollected Governor of Mexico's wealthy estate. With a | :24:10. | :24:15.
unique popular style, he has really engaged many disillusioned voters | :24:16. | :24:18.
tired of corrupt party politics. But whilst we are here, we are | :24:19. | :24:44.
offered an interview with a man who claims to be in charge of local | :24:45. | :24:49.
operations for one of the cartels. I am the head of the area, I am the | :24:50. | :24:54.
head of this territory. Have you be headed people? Assassinations? Yes, | :24:55. | :25:07.
yes. Executions? Yes. Extortion? Yes. Do politicians, in order to | :25:08. | :25:14.
survive in this country, work closely with groups like yours? | :25:15. | :25:20.
100%. El Bronco denies any collusion with the cartels and told me he does | :25:21. | :25:24.
not do deals. He is confident that they can be defeated. The rest of | :25:25. | :25:30.
Mexico is closely watching his governorship, hoping for signs of | :25:31. | :25:35.
success. But days after we left, 50 prisoners died in a jail in cartel | :25:36. | :25:42.
related violence. The battle for control of the state is clearly not | :25:43. | :25:52.
over. Stay with us. I will be back in just a few minutes with sport, | :25:53. | :25:57.
including use of a very unusual team being invited to the Rio Olympics. | :25:58. | :26:11.
Good evening and welcome at look -- to look at | :26:12. | :26:13. |
