To have him still with me is amazing to be quite honest. They tried to | :01:03. | :01:07.
taken straight from birth. Do this without? No. Without you I couldn't | :01:08. | :01:17.
do it. Because there was no point, is there. There is no point without | :01:18. | :01:19.
you. Welcome to the programme, | :01:20. | :01:28.

use the hashtag Victoria LIVE and If you text, | :01:58. | :02:00.
you will be charged More former footballers | :02:01. | :02:02.
have come forward to say they were sexually abused by youth | :02:03. | :02:09.
coaches in the game - Most of the claims still involve | :02:10. | :02:12.
the former Crewe Alexandra youth coach Barry Bennell, | :02:13. | :02:16.
but there are fears that paedophiles may have preyed on youngsters | :02:17. | :02:18.
at other clubs. We'll be speaking exclusively to two | :02:19. | :02:20.
more former players who've waived their anonymity to tell us | :02:21. | :02:22.
they were abused as children. With each day more former | :02:23. | :02:25.
players are coming forward to tell their stories of alleged | :02:26. | :02:29.
abuse by football coaches At the centre of the allegations | :02:30. | :02:31.
is Barry Bennell, a former coach at Crewe Alexandra in the '80s | :02:32. | :02:35.
and '90s, who served three separate prison sentences for | :02:36. | :02:39.
abusing young boys. Last week the former Crewe player | :02:40. | :02:43.
Andy Woodward broke his silence to tell of the abuse he suffered | :02:44. | :02:48.
at the hands of Bennell, and this morning two more former | :02:49. | :02:51.
youth players told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme | :02:52. | :02:56.
their stories of alleged abuse These allegations are sending shock | :02:57. | :03:04.
waves through British football, with claims that hundreds | :03:05. | :03:11.
of youngsters could have been affected, and questions over how | :03:12. | :03:13.
many coaches may have been involved. This morning another unnamed player | :03:14. | :03:16.
has told the Guardian newspaper that he was abused by a different | :03:17. | :03:18.
coach while he was in the youth A hotline set up the NSPCC yesterday | :03:19. | :03:22.
received more than 50 calls The England captain Wayne Rooney, | :03:23. | :03:29.
who is an ambassador for the charity, has encouraged | :03:30. | :03:33.
others who have been affected to come forward, | :03:34. | :03:36.
saying they don't need Annita is in the BBC | :03:37. | :03:37.
Newsroom with a summary A scathing report has accused | :03:38. | :03:43.
Britain's biggest police force of putting children at risk | :03:44. | :03:50.
because of "serious failings" in the way it deals | :03:51. | :03:52.
with child abuse. The Inspectorate of Constabulary | :03:53. | :03:54.
found that three-quarters of cases investigated | :03:55. | :03:56.
by the Metropolitan Police were dealt with "inadequately" | :03:57. | :04:01.
or needed improvement. It said there was an "indefensible" | :04:02. | :04:03.
lack of leadership in child protection, with no single | :04:04. | :04:06.
officer in charge. Scotland Yard has apologised, | :04:07. | :04:08.
and said it will make changes. UK shoppers are expected | :04:09. | :04:17.
to spend a record ?2 billion Retailers predict that more | :04:18. | :04:20.
than three-quarters of spending will take place online - | :04:21. | :04:27.
a 16% increase on last year. Some Black Friday deals have already | :04:28. | :04:30.
been running for more than a week. Fresh doubts has been cast on | :04:31. | :04:43.
Britain's abilities to start formal Brexit negotiations come March. | :04:44. | :04:46.

A manhunt is underway in the south of France for an armed man | :04:54. | :04:56.
who killed a woman in a retirement home where about sixty | :04:57. | :04:59.
The hooded man burst into the home near the city of Montpellier, | :05:00. | :05:03.
She managed to escape and alert police but when they arrived | :05:04. | :05:07.
they found the body of another woman. | :05:08. | :05:09.

against the supermarket chain Iceland in a trademark dispute | :05:15. | :05:18.
The Nordic nation says it wants to ensure the right of Icelandic | :05:19. | :05:22.
companies to use the word 'Iceland' without facing | :05:23. | :05:24.

backing to the bill, which gets its second | :05:52. | :05:53.
The nominations for the BBC Music Awards album of the year | :05:54. | :05:57.
Rick Astley's comeback album '50' is among those shortlisted. | :05:58. | :06:03.
It will go up against the latest releases by Adele, | :06:04. | :06:05.
There's been some surprise that David Bowie's Blackstar didn't gain | :06:06. | :06:10.
a spot on the list which is chosen by the Radio 2 playlist committee. | :06:11. | :06:16.
That's a summary of the latest BBC News - more at 9.30am. | :06:17. | :06:27.
We're going to talk to four men in just a moment or two. Two who were | :06:28. | :06:35.
already spoken publicly about the abuse they suffered at the hands of | :06:36. | :06:39.
their former youth coach. And two more men who are speaking for the | :06:40. | :06:43.
first time today about the abuse they experienced as young boys. | :06:44. | :06:45.
Thank you The clubs have such a hold on the | :06:46. | :06:59.
young boys, that boys and parents will do anything to make sure they | :07:00. | :07:05.
are still in favour. This is a breeding ground for abuse when one | :07:06. | :07:08.
side has so much power over the young boys. That was a tweet. This | :07:09. | :07:14.
message from Wendy, it is so brave the these men to come forward living | :07:15. | :07:18.
with that awful secret must have been hell will stop let's get some | :07:19. | :07:27.
sport now, with Hugh. It was a fantastic | :07:28. | :07:27.
night the Wayne Rooney with Manchester United wasn't it? Wayne | :07:28. | :07:39.
Rooney said he didn't even go into the wedding where it was alleged he | :07:40. | :07:43.
was strong, nearly a fortnight ago. But that shouldn't detract from his | :07:44. | :07:47.
great performance in Manchester united's euro per league win. He | :07:48. | :07:57.
scored the opener in a 4-0 victory. The result means a point in their | :07:58. | :08:02.
final group match will take Jose Mourinho's men into the knockout | :08:03. | :08:06.
stages. Agnew is the Southhampton, beating one nil. That means they | :08:07. | :08:14.
will still need a goalless draw or win in their final group game in two | :08:15. | :08:21.
weeks' time. Plenty of work for the British clubs. | :08:22. | :08:23.
Staying with football and one of the games greats is now planning | :08:24. | :08:26.
Indeed, what a career for Steven Gerard, the former England captain | :08:27. | :08:36.
has called it a day after leaving LA Galaxy. He will be most remembered | :08:37. | :08:40.
for his stellar career whilst at Liverpool. He made over seven | :08:41. | :08:49.
careers for the club. He also and constant 40 England caps. The | :08:50. | :08:53.
question is, what is next for Stevie G? In the future eye of dreams and | :08:54. | :09:01.
aspirations of having a go of the management, or assisting the manager | :09:02. | :09:04.
and being back in bold and the dressing room. But, you know where | :09:05. | :09:10.
the many years to do that. And we say goodbye to another sporting | :09:11. | :09:14.
British great, he says goodbye to a sport he loves as well. After 17 | :09:15. | :09:18.
years behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. Jenson button says this will | :09:19. | :09:26.
be his last Grand Prix. We're not sure whether he will take up new | :09:27. | :09:31.
challenges in motorsport or not. He will do a lot more try our full on, | :09:32. | :09:37.
he was well champion in 2009. He leads the sport having taken part in | :09:38. | :09:41.
305 races. He says he will step away happy with what he has achieved and | :09:42. | :09:46.
is life. Now. Best of luck to him as well. | :09:47. | :09:52.
This morning, how widespread was historical sexual abuse in football? | :09:53. | :09:55.
Three former youth players exclusively tell us about the abuse | :09:56. | :09:57.
they say they suffered at the hands of their former coach Barry Bennell, | :09:58. | :10:00.
Since Andy Woodward told us last week in his first broadcast | :10:01. | :10:04.
interview that he'd been raped hundreds of times by Bennell whilst | :10:05. | :10:06.
at Crewe Alexandra - in total six other players | :10:07. | :10:09.
have now come forward to waive their right to anonymity. | :10:10. | :10:11.
And we can speak to three of them now... | :10:12. | :10:19.
Chris Unsworth says he was raped between 50 and 100 times by Bennell | :10:20. | :10:25.
at Man City and Crewe youth teams, he didn't tell a single | :10:26. | :10:27.
person about the abuse for over thirty years until in fact | :10:28. | :10:30.
he saw our interview with Andy Woodward last week. | :10:31. | :10:39.
Jason Dunford says he was abused once by Bennell | :10:40. | :10:41.
at the Manchester City youth team - and when he told him | :10:42. | :10:44.
to 'get off him' - Bennell effectively forced him out | :10:45. | :10:46.
Neither of them turned professional - in part they say | :10:47. | :10:50.
because of Bennell's abuse - they're both speaking publicly | :10:51. | :10:52.
Steve Walters says he was repeatedly abused by Bennell whilst | :10:53. | :10:59.
at Crewe Alexandra - this is his first TV interview | :11:00. | :11:01.
And with them is Andy Woodward - the player whose revelations have | :11:02. | :11:04.
inspired others to speak out at last. | :11:05. | :11:06.
As you'd expect our conversation with them will be frank and open - | :11:07. | :11:09.
and will cover details of sexual abuse. | :11:10. | :11:13.
First of all thank you for coming on the programme today. I will start | :11:14. | :11:20.
with Chris. When you first watch the interview with Andy, lastly, what | :11:21. | :11:26.
effective have a new? Massive, really. Just watching Andy on TV, I | :11:27. | :11:34.
was just at home with my girlfriend, who actually watched the TV | :11:35. | :11:42.
interview and brought it home. We sat down and watched it. I didn't | :11:43. | :11:47.
say anything apart from I knew Andy, at least to play with Andy. -- I | :11:48. | :11:54.
used to play with auntie. We had a chat and she asked me about was OK. | :11:55. | :11:59.
I came at home I sat at home and thought about this. I thought, I | :12:00. | :12:05.
have got to come forward. I've got to come forward and help everyone. | :12:06. | :12:14.
You had never told a soul? Know. I never told anyone. I kept it locked | :12:15. | :12:18.
away right in the back of my head and still I really living things. | :12:19. | :12:24.
Having a chat with the boys and reliving it. I never told a soul. | :12:25. | :12:34.
You were first introduced to the now when he was a scout at Manchester | :12:35. | :12:42.
city, how did the use again? Used to pick me up, I was probably one of | :12:43. | :12:47.
the closest lads that lived to his house. In the Peak District? Yes. He | :12:48. | :12:56.
used to pick me up and the abuse started in the car. He used a torch. | :12:57. | :13:03.
We used to play games in the car. -- he used to torture. That is when all | :13:04. | :13:11.
started. On the way to training? Ayes he used to touch. And then he | :13:12. | :13:17.
invited you over to his house? That happened a little bit later, not | :13:18. | :13:24.
long after. At first there was two or three or four lads that used to | :13:25. | :13:30.
stay there. There was always two or three in the bed. Right, I'm going | :13:31. | :13:40.
to ask you what he did to you. At first it started, the games used to | :13:41. | :13:45.
start and it was hands everywhere. Down the pants and later it got more | :13:46. | :13:54.
serious in the bedroom, where there was penetration, things like that. | :13:55. | :14:05.
What age will you? I was about nine. And what did you, as a little boy, | :14:06. | :14:10.
think was going on? I didn't know what was going on, to be fair. I | :14:11. | :14:17.
just knew I wanted to get and I thought, this is obviously what I | :14:18. | :14:22.
have to go through. Did you know it was wrong? I knew it was wrong, but | :14:23. | :14:29.
I just went with it. I just went with it. Did you ever consider | :14:30. | :14:39.
telling a friend, a team-mate, another adult? No, never. Why? It | :14:40. | :14:48.
wasn't the in thing to do. You set your goals where you want to get to | :14:49. | :14:58.
and it was never brought up, never. He's stopped after a few years as | :14:59. | :15:03.
she got older. Yes, when you get a bit older you know you are growing | :15:04. | :15:10.
up you are a young adult. Your body changes. That is when your time is | :15:11. | :15:23.
it with him. He's onto a fresh boy. To a younger boy. Guest to younger | :15:24. | :15:30.
boys. When you got to 1516, you turned your back on football? I did, | :15:31. | :15:37.
yes I turn my back on football. I was lucky, is that the right word? I | :15:38. | :15:44.
had other sports to tissue. I turned to be a professional golfer. -- add | :15:45. | :15:50.
other sports to push you. I had a ball. And that was my escape route. | :15:51. | :15:56.
And you turned your back on football because you associated it with this | :15:57. | :16:01.
horror? Yes, somebody asked me that yesterday. At the time I don't know. | :16:02. | :16:09.
Was I good enough, I don't know. Looking back, I would say yes I | :16:10. | :16:19.
probably timed, football, I had had enough. That was it. I can't imagine | :16:20. | :16:24.
what it is like for young boy growing up through adolescence into | :16:25. | :16:25.
adult hood, and for decades keeping I chatted with my friend the other | :16:26. | :16:47.
night about this. And you just get on with your life and you forget | :16:48. | :16:51.
everything that has happened. As I say luckily I had my golf to go to | :16:52. | :17:00.
and that guided me through I think. Both my parents have died. And that | :17:01. | :17:11.
hurts me. Not telling them. Does it? Yes. I don't know if it's a good | :17:12. | :17:16.
thing that I did not tell them because they would have blamed | :17:17. | :17:22.
themselves, so... Chris, thank you for telling us. Such personal, | :17:23. | :17:29.
intimate and also horrific details. I want to bring in Steve, if I may. | :17:30. | :17:37.
I wonder, Steve, what the effect on you has been of revealing this | :17:38. | :17:38.
secret? Reading about Andy, how brave he | :17:39. | :18:22.
was, in the Guardian, I picked up the phone, because I was upset but | :18:23. | :18:26.
in a way it was like the biggest relief, like I said to Andy, like | :18:27. | :18:35.
100 tonnes lifted off my shoulders. Carrying this all my life, my career | :18:36. | :18:40.
has been ruined, my relationships have been ruined. I just had to get | :18:41. | :18:54.
it out there, I've got children, this can never happen to any more | :18:55. | :18:59.
children. You had a reputation as being one of the finest young | :19:00. | :19:03.
footballers in the country, as a teenager. That's right, people ask | :19:04. | :19:09.
me, what happened to you, Steve. In a football environment, that's full | :19:10. | :19:17.
of bravado, we've all met last night, our stories, we are all the | :19:18. | :19:28.
same. I can't believe how brave, we've all been there, it's just... | :19:29. | :19:36.
You think that he effectively snatched your footballing career | :19:37. | :19:40.
away from you? Yes, that's what happens. What has disappointed me | :19:41. | :19:51.
really is that Crewe Alexandra, I come from Plymouth, my dad is dead | :19:52. | :19:57.
now but he ended up working at Crewe as well. My parents put trust into | :19:58. | :20:04.
that football club. And basically they have let us down. All of us. | :20:05. | :20:11.
Can you explain to our audience, Steve, why you were afraid to tell | :20:12. | :20:19.
anyone? I have had problems with relationships with men. Because I | :20:20. | :20:24.
have always thought, you know, am I gay? What's happened to us, he has | :20:25. | :20:34.
made us feel like that. That's not right, you know. Every single | :20:35. | :20:43.
relationship I have had with anybody, it is just so hard to | :20:44. | :20:51.
explain. So difficult, honestly. In the early 1990s the police did talk | :20:52. | :20:56.
to you, didn't they, when they started to investigate Barry | :20:57. | :20:59.
Bennell? They came to my house on three separate occasions. I got told | :21:00. | :21:06.
that I would never play football again. Somehow I managed to carry on | :21:07. | :21:14.
and I ended up playing in the Conference but I still had that | :21:15. | :21:19.
dream, I wanted to fight this and beat this. If I did, if it did come | :21:20. | :21:30.
out, would people believe you? Back in that day and age, if you came out | :21:31. | :21:36.
with this sort of accusations so to speak would anybody believe you and | :21:37. | :21:40.
would you get the support we have had at the moment? Back then you | :21:41. | :21:49.
just did not know. I'm going to read some messages from our audience. Are | :21:50. | :21:56.
you all right, Andy? Yes, I'm just a bit emotional. Katie says, I want to | :21:57. | :22:00.
praise these high-profile footballers are coming forward and | :22:01. | :22:03.
being so brave to speak openly about the terrible things that happened to | :22:04. | :22:08.
them. I hope that it will help to bring the culprits to justice. A | :22:09. | :22:14.
tweet from scissors, watching Victoria Live, four brakeman on the | :22:15. | :22:18.
programme. My heart goes out to these men, it takes incredible | :22:19. | :22:23.
courage to speak to anyone about this, let alone tell the nation. | :22:24. | :22:28.
Roxy says, incredible bravery being shown by these players on your | :22:29. | :22:32.
programme, the epitome of courage, my heart goes out. This, from | :22:33. | :22:37.
Steven, really brave man. Thank you all for your courage, guys. There | :22:38. | :22:44.
are so many of these. David says, it's essential, get access to | :22:45. | :22:47.
talking Canterbury, either individually or as a group. Victor | :22:48. | :22:51.
says, respect for the courage of these men. I think, in your case, | :22:52. | :22:59.
Steve -- get access to talking therapy. Barry Bennell was saying, | :23:00. | :23:05.
stick with me and I will get you playing for England. That's correct, | :23:06. | :23:14.
he made all these. Ron Mrs. -- he made all these false promises. His | :23:15. | :23:20.
coaching skills was something we had never seen in this country before. | :23:21. | :23:25.
He could do things with the football and we hadn't seen. He said he could | :23:26. | :23:31.
produce that into the game, showed these tricks and flicks, promise you | :23:32. | :23:38.
this and that. It was just all grooming, wasn't it? Since you spoke | :23:39. | :23:46.
to the Guardian newspaper this week, Steve, do you think you have had | :23:47. | :23:50.
enough support from the football world, from former professionals who | :23:51. | :23:53.
are high profile? Have you had enough support from those kind of | :23:54. | :23:59.
people? I would like a little more, really. A lot of high-profile team | :24:00. | :24:06.
mates are out there, but still think, there is this bravado thing | :24:07. | :24:14.
in football that needs to be sorted out. They have been successful in | :24:15. | :24:22.
their careers, we have all had our lives and careers snatched away from | :24:23. | :24:30.
us. We all need support from anybody and everybody out there. Clearly in | :24:31. | :24:35.
your case, Steve, and renewals, Chris, you are speaking of this for | :24:36. | :24:39.
the first time after all these decades, so what happened to you was | :24:40. | :24:43.
not part of the evidence against Barry Bennell when he was jailed in | :24:44. | :24:47.
the late 1990s. What do you want to happen now? Justice, now. The | :24:48. | :25:00.
thought of Barry Bennell being out on the streets, for example, coming | :25:01. | :25:10.
here our train was unfortunately terminated at Milton Keynes last | :25:11. | :25:13.
night and that is where he is. We had to get off the train, and I said | :25:14. | :25:21.
to my wife,... It's all right, it's all right. He could be here now! I | :25:22. | :25:38.
just want justice. All this has got to be rectified as soon as possible. | :25:39. | :25:45.
I'm going to bring in Jason, if I may. Thank you, Steve. Jason, | :25:46. | :25:52.
compared to Andy, Steve and Chris, you describe yourself as "Lucky". | :25:53. | :25:58.
Explain why? I feel that I am lucky because at the moment, what is | :25:59. | :26:04.
determined now as sexual assault, I told him where to go. I confronted | :26:05. | :26:10.
him. As I told the boys last night I will never forget the deathly still. | :26:11. | :26:16.
And this was in his house? Negative, negative, this was in a holiday | :26:17. | :26:26.
camp, at Butlins. - No, No. I will never forget that is there, but from | :26:27. | :26:30.
that day forward I knew that my life would be really difficult with this | :26:31. | :26:34.
guy. Because you told him where to go. I told him to F off. I remember | :26:35. | :26:47.
physically hitting him. There was no retaliation from the guy. As a | :26:48. | :26:53.
13-year-old boy, almost 14, I was the same as every boy on the sofa. | :26:54. | :26:58.
By dreams of being a footballer. And every child who has a dream, to me, | :26:59. | :27:05.
should be able to try to achieve that dream without having to go to | :27:06. | :27:10.
sexual abuse or being around sexual predators. Barry Bennell, to me, was | :27:11. | :27:18.
not only a dangerous man, you still is a dangerous man. -- he still is a | :27:19. | :27:26.
dangerous man. But most of the lads who were involved in his coaching | :27:27. | :27:29.
and in the squad is that he coached over the years, they'll find this | :27:30. | :27:35.
very difficult, and hopefully, by what is going on, we are going to | :27:36. | :27:42.
get some results. When you told him where to go he then started the mind | :27:43. | :27:46.
games. He would tell you that he was going to play you and then he would | :27:47. | :27:50.
drop you, you would turn up at the game, your mother would drive, how | :27:51. | :27:54.
many miles, you would be standing on the sidelines and never get on. That | :27:55. | :27:58.
was the start of him trying to isolate you, what else did he do? He | :27:59. | :28:04.
detached me from the group by playing mind games. Like the lads | :28:05. | :28:07.
have said, because you are following the dream you are prepared to go | :28:08. | :28:12.
through with it. Why I feel different to these lads is that I | :28:13. | :28:16.
was not prepared to put up with that. I love the game of football. I | :28:17. | :28:22.
thought to myself, there are other ways around this. Barry Bennell is | :28:23. | :28:26.
not the be all and end all of getting me where I want to go and if | :28:27. | :28:30.
I have to go around the houses I will go to another team, I'll try | :28:31. | :28:34.
something a bit different. As he tried to detach me from the group by | :28:35. | :28:43.
fabricating stories of me amongst my team-mates,... He said that you had | :28:44. | :28:46.
stolen money from one of your team-mates? Yeah. And he talk us to | :28:47. | :28:54.
Norfolk for tournament, my father was working class and we went to the | :28:55. | :29:04.
tournament, when we came back there was no trophy, the team had been | :29:05. | :29:08.
dropped, defeated, my father said, why have you not played? Do you | :29:09. | :29:13.
really want to tell your parents that you have been accused of being | :29:14. | :29:18.
a thief? I had to make up a story for my parents. In my mother's head, | :29:19. | :29:25.
she was just looking at the football side of it. Like every single parent | :29:26. | :29:33.
that worked hard taking their children to the football, for those | :29:34. | :29:40.
parents out there who are kicking themselves, don't be guilty. To not | :29:41. | :29:45.
be guilty. Because this man was playing games, not only with the | :29:46. | :29:48.
children, he was playing games with the parents heads as well. Let me | :29:49. | :29:53.
read some more messages before we take a break for the news and sport, | :29:54. | :30:01.
on Twitter, this tweet, to those guys must overcome and know that | :30:02. | :30:04.
millions of people are supporting you. Rachel says, such bravery from | :30:05. | :30:07.
the guys, massive respect to them for speaking out. This is | :30:08. | :30:12.
heartbreaking seeing these grown men talking about what happened to them | :30:13. | :30:14.
as children. True courage. speaking out about abuse is vital. | :30:15. | :30:28.
There's a few more I will read. And then I will bring in and day. Here's | :30:29. | :30:31.
the latest news headlines. More former football players have | :30:32. | :30:34.
alleged that they were sexually abused in the sport's youth system | :30:35. | :30:36.
during the 1980s and 90s. Jason Dunford and Chris Unsworth | :30:37. | :30:39.
have waived their right to anonymity to tell this programme | :30:40. | :30:41.
that they were targeted by the former Crewe Alexandra | :30:42. | :30:43.
coach, Barry Bennell. A total of seven former footballers | :30:44. | :30:54.
have now spoken out publicly about how they were abused. | :30:55. | :30:58.
A mob of 30 schoolchildren have attacked two police officers | :30:59. | :31:03.
after they tried to search a suspect for a knife. | :31:04. | :31:06.
and repeatedly kicked in the head, while his colleague was punched | :31:07. | :31:14.
in the jaw when she tried to rescue him in New Cross | :31:15. | :31:16.
Three quarters of cases were dealt with in adequately or needed | :31:17. | :31:36.
improvement. That is a summary of the latest BBC News, Moore at ten | :31:37. | :31:42.
o'clock. Here's Hugh with the latest sports news. Good morning, Wayne | :31:43. | :31:45.
Rooney is a perfect player and should be shown more respect. Rooney | :31:46. | :31:51.
became United's record goal-scorer in Europe in their 4-0 win. They are | :31:52. | :31:57.
yet to reach the knockout stages, though. The same is true of | :31:58. | :32:05.
Southampton at about 1-0 game. Just Butler will replace Ben Duckett the | :32:06. | :32:11.
England's third test against India. The match starts in the early hours | :32:12. | :32:16.
of tomorrow morning. That is all the sport now, I will be back in about | :32:17. | :32:18.
half an 's time. Good morning. We are talking to | :32:19. | :32:27.
these three men who have spoken about the abuse they have | :32:28. | :32:31.
experienced as young boys. Football is loving the game of football. | :32:32. | :32:38.
Chris and Jason speaking publicly for the first time today. Steve, in | :32:39. | :32:44.
his first TV interview has explained what happened to him. All of them | :32:45. | :32:49.
have spoken because of what Andy Woodward did a week ago. Andy is | :32:50. | :32:55.
here too and is very emotional which is completely understandable. I want | :32:56. | :33:00.
ask, you guys if Andy hadn't spoken out, would you have ever come | :33:01. | :33:07.
forward? Not in a million years. I keep telling him this, what he has | :33:08. | :33:16.
done is so brave, inspirational, in my opinion, in our opinion, for what | :33:17. | :33:22.
he has done is absolutely fantastic. So brave, you know. He is like my | :33:23. | :33:32.
new brother. What would you say Chris? It was locked way back in my | :33:33. | :33:40.
mind and I had forgotten about it. I would never have come forward if I | :33:41. | :33:45.
hadn't seen him on telly. What was it about him speaking about his | :33:46. | :33:50.
experiences that inspired you to do the same? Just because I know what | :33:51. | :33:55.
he has been through. I have been through exactly the same in all the | :33:56. | :33:59.
lads have been through the same. This has got to stop. The only way I | :34:00. | :34:07.
could help was to come forward. You seem quite strong, Chris, if you | :34:08. | :34:12.
don't mind me saying? A lot of people have said that, but I do know | :34:13. | :34:15.
that I'm not strong. Deep down I don't think I am. I am now a funeral | :34:16. | :34:22.
director, I see lots of horrible things, so that is made me a little | :34:23. | :34:26.
bit stronger than the rest of the lads, probably. What would you say | :34:27. | :34:30.
the anti-? I love Andy to bits, I'm here because of him. Andy, you have | :34:31. | :34:39.
done a quite remarkable thing, you know? I'm totally overwhelmed. Last | :34:40. | :34:45.
week I was on here are my own. I was so scared. I knew that they were | :34:46. | :34:54.
here. Honest to God, Victoria I can't thank the public enough. And | :34:55. | :34:58.
in media and more importantly the lads for backing me up. I am totally | :34:59. | :35:09.
overwhelmed. I want to ask you all, about parents, your payment letting | :35:10. | :35:17.
you stay over at coaches' house. I would like to think that would never | :35:18. | :35:20.
happen today. What was different about back then? From my | :35:21. | :35:28.
perspective, I have said it before in other interviews, the parents | :35:29. | :35:36.
didn't know. They didn't know. They are also victims in this. My mum and | :35:37. | :35:42.
dad were in tears last night because they are actually realised for the | :35:43. | :35:46.
first time that they are victims as well in this. And they are. Is it, | :35:47. | :35:55.
feasible that other adults at the time really didn't know what was | :35:56. | :36:02.
happening? Impossible. The football clubs, I did believe it for one | :36:03. | :36:06.
minute. I believe there was a conspiracy there was a paedophile | :36:07. | :36:11.
ring. And there were people at those football clubs that had duty to look | :36:12. | :36:17.
after the welfare of young boys coming through their system. This is | :36:18. | :36:23.
their potential future stars, and they are being sexually abused and | :36:24. | :36:28.
assaulted. And by member of their staff. Steve, what do you think is a | :36:29. | :36:31.
possible other adults really didn't know? I don't honestly know. Until | :36:32. | :36:45.
Bennell's arrest? I honestly don't know, really. To be honest review. | :36:46. | :36:50.
Chris? I think members of the club knew what was going on they knew. It | :36:51. | :36:58.
was just swept under the carpet. You are talking about senior players? | :36:59. | :37:03.
Senior players, senior management and the top as well. Is this as big | :37:04. | :37:15.
as Jimmy Savile? I think Southall's looks like a choir boy competitor | :37:16. | :37:18.
this fella and what is going on right now. As I said on Channel 4 | :37:19. | :37:29.
last night, I will tell you a story, this is chilling, this. Somebody | :37:30. | :37:33.
rang me up and said he remember going to grand Canary's I did it | :37:34. | :37:38.
myself. There were seven of us that went away. He said, we went for | :37:39. | :37:45.
seven days with seven others and he had won every night. Oh God! Do you | :37:46. | :37:53.
know why you didn't talk to each other as boys? It wasn't the thing | :37:54. | :38:00.
to be done, was it lads? From 11 years of age she didn't discuss | :38:01. | :38:03.
things like that because your dream would have burst. -- you didn't | :38:04. | :38:09.
discuss things like that. Lads just concentrated on improving football. | :38:10. | :38:14.
There was one, just to show you, this is how was. I remember being on | :38:15. | :38:20.
a train at the age of 13 and I've spoken to this lad. 25 years since | :38:21. | :38:27.
he is come out, we're sat on the training he asked whether I | :38:28. | :38:32.
remembered. He looked at me and I look to him and we both knew. We | :38:33. | :38:40.
hike contact. -- we had eye contact. He said you knew, and I said I knew. | :38:41. | :38:45.
But the rest didn't talk to each other. Could it have been prevented? | :38:46. | :39:01.
Yes. Chris? I think, yes it could have been prevented, but way back | :39:02. | :39:05.
then there was no laws. You just went with it. You just went with it. | :39:06. | :39:10.
Do you think it could have been prevented, Steve? Looking back now, | :39:11. | :39:21.
yes. As I've said before, I lived in Plymouth so I had no choice but to | :39:22. | :39:28.
stay... You moved up. I had to stay somewhere, as was my parents were | :39:29. | :39:33.
concerned they put the trust into the football club. Surely they | :39:34. | :39:40.
should have vetted and made sure that the person that was looking | :39:41. | :39:53.
after orders was a normal person. Could it happen now? I don't think | :39:54. | :40:00.
so. Recently I've been involved with the professional football club, | :40:01. | :40:06.
looking at the boys are age. And, the football club I was at | :40:07. | :40:12.
everything they safeguarded. Everyone is protected. It is just a | :40:13. | :40:20.
different world now. Thankfully, for our young children, Mr was about | :40:21. | :40:24.
children. And some boys at football club. -- most of us have children. I | :40:25. | :40:32.
am more confident now that this wouldn't happen. Do you want to see | :40:33. | :40:36.
these historic claims of sexual abuse in football brought into the | :40:37. | :40:41.
wide ranging national sexual appreciating quite the? It is a | :40:42. | :40:49.
difficult question what went on in the past, like I said to you. I was | :40:50. | :40:56.
just focusing on now. If it helps but orders to all now move forward | :40:57. | :41:00.
in football, then it is going to help safeguard and safeguard | :41:01. | :41:06.
everyone in sport. Then, that is fine, yes. The issue is, | :41:07. | :41:15.
professional football clubs, it is tied, it is bring fenced. In | :41:16. | :41:22.
grassroots up for when there is small clubs where parents are | :41:23. | :41:26.
managers and they are struggling to get the funding in everything else. | :41:27. | :41:31.
These managers out there. It is an easy target because they are | :41:32. | :41:36.
struggling to get managers that will look after the team. But you still | :41:37. | :41:42.
have to get checks in order to be a coach, don't you? They pick a better | :41:43. | :41:45.
time to come through. You are supposed to, but when you don't have | :41:46. | :41:48.
a manager and you are struggling to these kids. Victoria, can I do is | :41:49. | :41:55.
comment. Up until 1990, when he was first arrested if you would have | :41:56. | :42:01.
done a background check in those days, he might have been OK. Because | :42:02. | :42:08.
he wasn't caught. So, what we're saying is we have a system in place | :42:09. | :42:14.
at the moment whereby one of trust, until you become an offender, which | :42:15. | :42:21.
carries victims, then you can get away with whatever you want to do. | :42:22. | :42:29.
After Bennell's conviction and another one in 2002, the Newcastle | :42:30. | :42:34.
United connection. As far as I can see there was no effort made by any | :42:35. | :42:38.
club or the FA to investigate whether there were any more victims, | :42:39. | :42:44.
alleged victims, or whether there were offenders. What you think of | :42:45. | :42:50.
that? I think it is shocking. Everything that we've been through | :42:51. | :42:55.
is being pushed under the carpet. This is why we are here today. To | :42:56. | :42:59.
bring it out and make people aware and hopefully others will come out | :43:00. | :43:08.
and joiners. Steve, what do you think about the fact that there was | :43:09. | :43:12.
no wider enquiry from those with in football to try and find out if | :43:13. | :43:19.
others have been affected? To be honest, I'm gobsmacked. All the | :43:20. | :43:25.
organisations are supposed to be responsible for football and looking | :43:26. | :43:33.
after children. They have a key to protect others. So, all the | :43:34. | :43:38.
appropriate authorities down to the police, everybody, the whole of | :43:39. | :43:45.
football needs ripping apart. -- they have a duty to protect others. | :43:46. | :43:53.
This could never happen to any young footballer again. That is for those | :43:54. | :44:00.
who've been brave enough to come out now. We are all going through a lot | :44:01. | :44:08.
of pain at the moment. But we can prevent anything happening to other | :44:09. | :44:13.
young children. I will personally die a happy man. I'm going to | :44:14. | :44:19.
introduce you to Sara who's been watching you this morning, she is | :44:20. | :44:22.
one of our viewers who has been abused in the past. Hello, Sara. | :44:23. | :44:28.
Hello, good morning. What you want said these gentlemen this morning? | :44:29. | :44:35.
Looking at the cheap one of you I can see the debt of your pain -- | :44:36. | :44:40.
looking at each one of you. I know what it takes to come forward. You | :44:41. | :44:45.
are so brave and are doing such an amazing thing that so many people | :44:46. | :44:49.
and for yourselves. I hope your own pain would gradually ease and you | :44:50. | :44:55.
will have as many good things in your life as you possibly can. You | :44:56. | :45:00.
are very brave and courageous. Thank you very much your very much helped | :45:01. | :45:08.
me as well. Thank you very much. Let me read you more messages. Johnny | :45:09. | :45:14.
says this must have to be the most emotional interview I've ever seen, | :45:15. | :45:18.
massive respect. Georgina echoes that, my heart goes out to them. | :45:19. | :45:24.
Adam says, this story about paedophilia in football is | :45:25. | :45:30.
heartbreaking. These poor guys, really moving testimony. Sarah says, | :45:31. | :45:35.
heartbreaking abuse victims need a voice, we need to be heard when we | :45:36. | :45:40.
speak up. Andy, please any footballer come out and support | :45:41. | :45:44.
these brave guys who've come forward. Becky, so many butty guys | :45:45. | :45:51.
are being driven round -- football guys will stop being driven around | :45:52. | :46:02.
without checks. savage Mac what do you want to happen now, Andy? I have | :46:03. | :46:10.
this endeavour to go with this. Buy spoken to the FA, it is a passion | :46:11. | :46:14.
inside my stomach, I will do everything I can to help those young | :46:15. | :46:18.
kids and I won't stop. It's like Steve said. I will die a happy man | :46:19. | :46:24.
now. And I am going to do everything I can possibly do help people. If | :46:25. | :46:32.
all you ever do in your life is to help people... Man for me as well | :46:33. | :46:36.
I'm so emotional because last week I was sitting here are my own and now | :46:37. | :46:40.
I've got these guys. I've got so many people. I have worked so hard | :46:41. | :46:46.
this last week and so encouraged, I know that there are more out there, | :46:47. | :46:50.
Victoria, and they can do it. They really can do it. You know. I'm | :46:51. | :46:56.
going to thank you all so much. Thank you Andy, Chris, Steve, Jason. | :46:57. | :47:02.
You have been incredibly dignified. Thank you. Thank you very much. | :47:03. | :47:08.
There are so many messages. You'll be able to see them on Twitter | :47:09. | :47:11.
afterwards. Most of them talking about your courage for speaking out | :47:12. | :47:17.
on the programme today. I want to give you the number of the new 24 | :47:18. | :47:21.
hour NSPCC Hotline if you want to talk to someone about abuse. | :47:22. | :47:24.
The new hotline is available 24 hours a day on 0800 023 2642. | :47:25. | :47:31.
This number opened yesterday morning. Thank you again. | :47:32. | :47:47.
This morning - exclusive access to the UK's only rehabilitation | :47:48. | :47:50.
and treatment centre where mothers can overcome a drug or alcohol | :47:51. | :47:52.
addiction whilst living with their children. | :47:53. | :47:54.
Three babies on average are born addicted to drugs in England every | :47:55. | :47:56.
I've been addicted to heroin for 13 years. | :47:57. | :48:10.
I started with recreational drugs, party drugs, and | :48:11. | :48:15.
it led to harder drugs, crack and heroin. | :48:16. | :48:19.
I had a very, very nasty, nasty habit when I came here. | :48:20. | :48:27.
Her son was born addicted to drugs, but | :48:28. | :48:30.
living here means she can keep him with her. | :48:31. | :48:32.
Do you feel a bit calmer now you've got it? | :48:33. | :48:36.
So knowing that you can do this and... | :48:37. | :48:43.
Still have my little man is brilliant. | :48:44. | :48:44.
Often mums like Louise would have their children taking into | :48:45. | :48:54.
Often mums like Louise would have their children taken into | :48:55. | :48:56.
This is the only rehab centre in the country where she can live | :48:57. | :49:00.
I mean waking up with this little chap | :49:01. | :49:05.
To have him still with me is amazing, | :49:06. | :49:09.
Because they tried to take him straight from | :49:10. | :49:13.
Do you think you could do this without him? | :49:14. | :49:19.
Around 20 women enter these gates every year. | :49:20. | :49:36.
We've got to keep the | :49:37. | :49:38.
location secret because many are fleeing domestic violence. | :49:39. | :49:39.
They'll have to follow a strict drug and | :49:40. | :49:41.
The hope is they'll leave here in around | :49:42. | :49:50.
It is an expensive programme and many like this have been closed | :49:51. | :50:10.
down. Every single mother here says to us that she would not be able to | :50:11. | :50:14.
do recovery without her child. She would not be able to focus on what | :50:15. | :50:18.
you needed to do and for the child to be separated they would either be | :50:19. | :50:21.
in the care system, they might be with family members but they | :50:22. | :50:25.
wouldn't be with their mum so keeping them together is better for | :50:26. | :50:31.
the mother and their child. What does that say? Amat was a heroin | :50:32. | :50:36.
addict, she is now clean and she still has her twins. Do you like the | :50:37. | :50:42.
Penguin? I just think it's heartbreaking that so many people | :50:43. | :50:46.
like me are just written off, you are a drug addict so you can't have | :50:47. | :50:56.
your child. -- Emma was a drug addict. Something has to change. The | :50:57. | :51:02.
women that I have met in this place are phenomenal. You know, some of | :51:03. | :51:06.
the stories I've heard, some of the things that some of these women have | :51:07. | :51:09.
been through, you wouldn't imagine it in your darkest nightmares. They | :51:10. | :51:17.
didn't deserve that. People deserve a chance. They deserve help. They | :51:18. | :51:22.
deserve a chance, the children deserve it. You know, like, some of | :51:23. | :51:32.
the things my friends here have told me, it has happened to them. It's | :51:33. | :51:37.
not their fault, they did not ask to be abused, and mistreated. Hello! | :51:38. | :51:51.
What do you want? He hit me, he made me hold out my hand while he tried | :51:52. | :51:56.
to cut my finger off with a knife, for ten years we had domestic | :51:57. | :52:00.
violence, I would be over drugged, or because there were no drugs... | :52:01. | :52:07.
Rachel was abused by her partner, she turned to heroin, now off the | :52:08. | :52:12.
drugs she is here with her son. You know you are carrying a baby but you | :52:13. | :52:16.
still do it. It is that lifestyle. You wake up and you realise, though, | :52:17. | :52:22.
my God, I've got a habit. And then there is the stigma attached to | :52:23. | :52:27.
that, if you admit to a professional that you have a habit that they will | :52:28. | :52:32.
take away your child, so I had it. You went through a hell of a lot | :52:33. | :52:39.
when you were younger. I don't blame my partner, I don't blame him for | :52:40. | :52:47.
anything that happened throughout my life, I take responsibility for it | :52:48. | :52:52.
because I made the choice to take drugs. You had four children running | :52:53. | :53:02.
around and you took heroin, did you not feel guilty? I feel guilty every | :53:03. | :53:15.
day of my life, I will never forgive myself for what I put my kids | :53:16. | :53:23.
through. Living in the past. It put me back to square one, I'm looking | :53:24. | :53:31.
forward to a future without drugs. I'm coming! I haven't forgotten | :53:32. | :53:36.
about you, don't worry! Back to Louise and her baby boy. Her other | :53:37. | :53:42.
children are in care. What did it feel like when your daughter was | :53:43. | :53:54.
taken from you? I just wanted to kill myself. I did attempt it | :53:55. | :54:01.
numerous times but now I am better. Can we carry this on later? The bell | :54:02. | :54:08.
means it is time for group therapy. I am giving you the gift of | :54:09. | :54:12.
strength, and of courage because you are a strong woman. It is emotional. | :54:13. | :54:19.
They have written letters to their abusers. | :54:20. | :54:21.
Louise is graduating from the course. | :54:22. | :54:23.
What have you learned from this last 12 weeks of freedom | :54:24. | :54:26.
But it doesn't mean she'll definitely keep | :54:27. | :54:30.
Louise has just gone into one of the most important meetings | :54:31. | :54:39.
She'll be meeting with her key workers and her | :54:40. | :54:42.
social workers to first of all find out how she's getting on, and, more | :54:43. | :54:45.
importantly, find out how her little boy's getting on and whether they'll | :54:46. | :54:48.
There is still not 100% chance that I'll be able to keep him. How does | :54:49. | :55:09.
that feel? Right now I'm still pretty shocked to be told that I | :55:10. | :55:15.
could lose my son. Sorry. That is the reality here. Not everyone keeps | :55:16. | :55:20.
their children. Katie relapsed after leaving the centre. She can only see | :55:21. | :55:25.
her son for visits. She is fighting to get him back. This is the worst | :55:26. | :55:30.
thing that's ever happened to me, being separated from my son. It is | :55:31. | :55:34.
like my heart has been ripped out, that is what it feels like on a | :55:35. | :55:40.
daily basis when I am not with him. It's a horrible, horrible feeling | :55:41. | :55:47.
like you are this terrible mum. If someone is struggling you help them. | :55:48. | :55:51.
You help them up. You don't beat them down. That is what happens in | :55:52. | :55:57.
society. To see children remain with their mum, I say that as a mother, I | :55:58. | :56:02.
think being a mother is one of the hardest jobs you can do but also one | :56:03. | :56:06.
of the most rewarding and to see children being able to stay with | :56:07. | :56:12.
their mum, that is really what it is all about. Noone this is the only | :56:13. | :56:24.
service of its kind in the country and it only has ten places. Where | :56:25. | :56:29.
would these women be without this service? They have all told me the | :56:30. | :56:34.
same thing. Dead, definitely. Because when they took my kids I | :56:35. | :56:40.
just did not care any more. My reason for living was gone. Put | :56:41. | :56:47.
yourself in dangerous places, with dangerous people, doing silly | :56:48. | :56:56.
things. So it saved my life really. Late in the programme we will be | :56:57. | :56:59.
talking to the people behind the rehab centre. | :57:00. | :57:07.
The serial killer Stephen Port will be sentenced this morning, | :57:08. | :57:10.
after he was found guilty of killing four men he met on dating websites. | :57:11. | :57:25.
Footage has emerged of a mob of schoolchildren | :57:26. | :57:35.
after they tried to search a suspect for a knife. | :57:36. | :57:38.
Our correspondent Richard Lister is here. | :57:39. | :57:46.
this incident happened on November nine but the Met only released | :57:47. | :57:54.
details of it this week. They are appealing for mobile phone footage | :57:55. | :57:57.
and this is one thing that has prompted this footage to come to | :57:58. | :58:07.
life. What happened is, this gang of schoolchildren were apparently | :58:08. | :58:12.
waiting to see a fight between two girls in New Cross and South East | :58:13. | :58:16.
London when these two officers on a routine patrol noticed that one of | :58:17. | :58:19.
the young boys in the crowd seemed to be concealing a knife. They went | :58:20. | :58:26.
to try and search and as you can see one of the officers is pinned to the | :58:27. | :58:36.
car. As he falls to the ground he is kicked in the head repeatedly and | :58:37. | :58:40.
badly bruised. He later had to go to hospital. His colleague is trying to | :58:41. | :58:45.
move the crowd back and eventually manages to pull him to safety but he | :58:46. | :58:50.
is badly dazed and she is also hit repeatedly in the face. The crowd | :58:51. | :58:54.
moves away but the police are anxious to contact anyone who might | :58:55. | :58:58.
have been about incident and can describe who was involved or call | :58:59. | :59:02.
has mobile phone footage. The of 15 was arrested and they are out on | :59:03. | :59:10.
bail at the moment. Police believe others were involved. Thank you. | :59:11. | :59:14.
Coming up, the news and sport, before that the weather with Darren. | :59:15. | :59:24.
Good morning, certainly more sunshine in the UK than in the last | :59:25. | :59:29.
couple of days, folk across Northern Ireland is lifting into low cloud, | :59:30. | :59:32.
is sunshine around, some stubborn fog patches around Glasgow, across | :59:33. | :59:37.
northern Scotland and Atlantic wind is bringing in more cloud and | :59:38. | :59:41.
keeping up temperatures. A bit of cloud in parts of Yorkshire and | :59:42. | :59:44.
Lincolnshire although on the whole lot of St John, double temperatures | :59:45. | :59:47.
in the south although feeling cold and the strength of those easterly | :59:48. | :59:52.
winds, they will ease overnight, and eventually we will see more cloud | :59:53. | :59:56.
coming into the South, some foggy patches further north with low cloud | :59:57. | :59:59.
pushing from the north which will shrink our area of frosty and foggy | :00:00. | :00:05.
weather in the night. Either side of that, something milder. The fog will | :00:06. | :00:10.
lift although it will be a great and gloomy morning across most of the | :00:11. | :00:14.
UK. Some low cloud in the south for a while, a bit of sunshine, hard to | :00:15. | :00:19.
find, generally more cloud and temperatures struggling after that | :00:20. | :00:22.
chilly start in southern Scotland and northern England. | :00:23. | :00:24.
Hello it's Friday, just after 10, I'm Victoria Derbyshire, | :00:25. | :00:26.
welcome to the programme if you've just joined us... | :00:27. | :00:29.
4 former footballers tell this programme about the abuse they say | :00:30. | :00:31.
and 1990s by youth code, Barry Bennell. Last week I was on here, I | :00:32. | :00:47.
was on my own and I was so scared, but I knew that they were here. | :00:48. | :00:54.
Honest to God, Victoria, I can't thank the public and North and the | :00:55. | :00:59.
media and more importantly the lads for backing me up. I am just totally | :01:00. | :01:02.
overwhelmed. I sat at home and thought about | :01:03. | :01:21.
this, and I thought I have to come forward. I have to do and help | :01:22. | :01:31.
everybody. You had never told a soul? No. Never told anyone. Kept it | :01:32. | :01:37.
locked away right in the back of my head. All four of the men we spoke | :01:38. | :01:44.
to this morning said they would abused by Barry Bennell, in the 90s | :01:45. | :01:48.
and 80s. They fear there could be many more victims. | :01:49. | :01:55.
Is this as big as Savile? I think Sabo looks like a choir boy compared | :01:56. | :02:02.
to this fella and what is going on now. -- I think Saville looks a | :02:03. | :02:06.
choir boy. And - exclusive access to the UK's | :02:07. | :02:08.
only rehabilitation and treatment centre for mothers and babies | :02:09. | :02:11.
addicted to drugs and alcohol To have him still with me is amazing | :02:12. | :02:22.
because they try to taken straight from Bath. The thing you could do | :02:23. | :02:29.
this without? No. -- straight from birth. Without you I couldn't do it, | :02:30. | :02:33.
because there is no point, is there, there's no point without you. | :02:34. | :02:35.
The serial killer Stephen Port will be sentenced this morning | :02:36. | :02:38.
after he was found guilty of killing four men he met on dating websites | :02:39. | :02:41.
We will bring you that sentence as soon as it happens. | :02:42. | :02:51.
Here's the BBC Newsroom with a summary of today's news. | :02:52. | :02:55.
Two more former football players have waived their right to anonymity | :02:56. | :02:58.
to speak exclusively to this programme about the sexual abuse | :02:59. | :03:01.
Jason Dunford and Chris Unsworth have been explaining how | :03:02. | :03:07.
they were targeted by the former Crewe Alexandra coach, | :03:08. | :03:10.
They had chosen to speak out after hearing the pester me of another | :03:11. | :03:24.
former player, Andy Woodward. -- having heard the testimony. | :03:25. | :03:25.
A total of 7 former footballers have now spoken out publicly | :03:26. | :03:28.
More video footage has emerged of an attack on a pair of police | :03:29. | :03:38.
officers by a group of up to thirty schoolchildren in South East London. | :03:39. | :03:41.
The officers had been trying to search a suspect for a knife. | :03:42. | :03:44.
One of them was beaten to the ground and kicked in the head, | :03:45. | :03:47.
while his colleague was punched in the jaw when she tried | :03:48. | :03:50.
A scathing report has accused Britain's biggest police force | :03:51. | :03:53.
of putting children at risk because of "serious failings" | :03:54. | :03:55.
in the way it deals with child abuse. | :03:56. | :03:57.
The Inspectorate of Constabulary found that three-quarters | :03:58. | :03:59.

She managed to escape and alert police but when they arrived | :04:12. | :04:16.
they found the body of another woman. | :04:17. | :04:18.
Authorities say it is too early to suggest a motive. | :04:19. | :04:29.

There's been some surprise that David Bowie's Blackstar didn't gain | :04:56. | :04:59.
a spot on the list which is chosen by the Radio 2 playlist committee. | :05:00. | :05:02.

This e-mail from John who's watching the interview with the four | :05:12. | :05:18.
gentlemen. He says we need to hear from the football clubs about how | :05:19. | :05:21.
they police their youth organisations now. We have cleared | :05:22. | :05:28.
the interviews with Crewe Alexander and Manchester city and they have | :05:29. | :05:33.
said no. Another e-mail, absolutely heartbroken and in tears watching | :05:34. | :05:37.
these guys. A friend of mine was abused as a young footballer in the | :05:38. | :05:41.
XML is never told soul. He told me one night when he was drunk. -- in | :05:42. | :05:48.
Wrexham. I hope this will mean he will have the courage to tell what | :05:49. | :05:51.
happened when he was a little boy hoping to follow his dream. Then he | :05:52. | :05:57.
can start healing. Yasmin said, healing the footballers minded me of | :05:58. | :06:03.
the day I used to prosecute abuses. I've told parliament there is a lot | :06:04. | :06:09.
of abuses, particularly of young boys. So many messages. We are | :06:10. | :06:14.
absolutely overwhelmed, we're going to read them all, we really | :06:15. | :06:17.
appreciate them and the four men will see them all. Do get in touch | :06:18. | :06:19.
with those, use the hatch tag. Wayne Rooney expect frustration at | :06:20. | :06:42.
his night off during England duty. He scored the opener in a 4-0 | :06:43. | :06:48.
victory at Old Trafford. Jesse Lingard came off the bench to round | :06:49. | :06:54.
off the scoring, late on. This means that a .40 dues a Mourinho's men | :06:55. | :07:01.
into the knockout stages. It is amazing achievement, obviously it | :07:02. | :07:05.
would be even better if you can help to bring to the club, the only | :07:06. | :07:10.
competition that the club never won in history which is that Europa | :07:11. | :07:12.
League. It is not the biggest competition. It is just one at | :07:13. | :07:20.
Manchester United's history doesn't have. Let's track that push. Sub | :07:21. | :07:32.

the England test team for the third test in India tomorrow. He blazes | :07:41. | :07:47.
Ben Duckett, he went replace Jonny Bairstow as wicketkeeper it will | :07:48. | :07:51.
give a second first-class game but Butler in the last 30 months. | :07:52. | :08:00.
Playing this way is slightly unusual, but Johnny is in great | :08:01. | :08:04.
form. The batter 's been outstanding for other over a year now is that | :08:05. | :08:09.
Gibbs is a bit more chance to bat, in one said. -- give others a bit | :08:10. | :08:15.
more chance. What we have had on this tour, is the fact that we've | :08:16. | :08:19.
had no practice, we haven't moaned about it. Bangladesh was a massive | :08:20. | :08:25.
Test series but we haven't had a chance to get on with practice. | :08:26. | :08:32.
Sebastien Coe's four-year spell as the chairman of the British Olympic | :08:33. | :08:37.
Association has come to an end. His time in charge most famously saw the | :08:38. | :08:42.
successful running of London 2012. In his only broadcast interview he | :08:43. | :08:46.
is told as others about the challenges that will face his | :08:47. | :08:50.
successor Sir Hugh Robinson. There are clearly going to be pressure | :08:51. | :08:54.
point of public expenditure, we have got to continue to remind government | :08:55. | :09:00.
that sport plays a R more important role than just a medals table. -- a | :09:01. | :09:09.
far more important role. It can be a conduit for community cohesion, | :09:10. | :09:11.
particularly in radical as communities. The big challenge is | :09:12. | :09:16.
helping, or allowing sport to help in that big agenda around health, | :09:17. | :09:25.
well-being and physical inactivity in particular. All the sports of | :09:26. | :09:31.
now, but just say Lewis Hamilton is having a good start as Formula 1 | :09:32. | :09:36.
weekend. We'll be back with more sport at 1030, and an | :09:37. | :09:37.
This morning two more former players have spoken to this programme | :09:38. | :09:42.
for the first time about the abuse they say they suffered at the hands | :09:43. | :09:46.
In their first ever interview Chris Unsworth and Jason Dunford | :09:47. | :09:49.
told us they were inspired to speak out after hearing Andy Woodward | :09:50. | :09:56.
Just watching Andy on TV, I was just at home with my girlfriend, who | :09:57. | :10:11.
actually watched the TV. She brought it home. We sat down and watched it | :10:12. | :10:20.
I didn't say anything. I just said I knew Andy and I used to play with | :10:21. | :10:26.
him. We had a little chat, she asked me I was OK. Then, I came home and I | :10:27. | :10:32.
sat at home and thought about this and I thought, I have to come | :10:33. | :10:39.
forward. I've got come forward, and help. | :10:40. | :10:52.
thought historical abuse was in football. I keep telling Andy this, | :10:53. | :11:03.
what he's done is so brave, inspirational, in my opinion, in an | :11:04. | :11:13.
opinion, for what he's done is absolutely fantastic. So brave. He | :11:14. | :11:24.
is like my new brother. Would you say, Chris? It was locked way back | :11:25. | :11:30.
in my mind and I had forgotten about it. I would never have come forward | :11:31. | :11:35.
if I hadn't seen him on telly. What was it about him speaking about his | :11:36. | :11:41.
experiences that inspired you to do the same? Just because, I know what | :11:42. | :11:46.
he has been through, because I've been to exactly the same in all the | :11:47. | :11:53.
lads have. This has got to stop. The only way that I could help is to | :11:54. | :11:58.
come forward. You seem quite strong, Chris if you don't mind me saying. A | :11:59. | :12:04.
lot of people have said that, but I do know about and that strong. Deep | :12:05. | :12:11.
down I don't think I am. I'm if funeral director and icy lots of | :12:12. | :12:14.
horrible things so that would be made me a bit stronger than the rest | :12:15. | :12:20.
of the lads. -- I see a lot of horrible things. I love Andy qubits, | :12:21. | :12:26.
I am here because of him. You have done quite a remarkable thing, you | :12:27. | :12:33.
know. I'm totally overwhelmed, last week I was on here on my own and I | :12:34. | :12:39.
was so scared, but I knew that they were here. Honest to God, Victoria, | :12:40. | :12:46.
I can't thank the public enough and the media and more importantly the | :12:47. | :12:54.
lads are backing me up. I'm just totally overwhelmed. -- the lads for | :12:55. | :13:01.
backing me up. I want to ask you all about, parents, your parents letting | :13:02. | :13:07.
you stay over at a coach's house. I like to think that wouldn't happen | :13:08. | :13:11.
today, what was different about back then? From my perspective, I have | :13:12. | :13:21.
said it before in other interviews. The parents didn't know, they didn't | :13:22. | :13:29.
know and they are also victims in this. My mum and dad were in tears | :13:30. | :13:35.
last night because they actually realised, for the first time, that | :13:36. | :13:38.
they are actually victims as well in this. And they are. Is it feasible | :13:39. | :13:47.
that other adult at the time really didn't know what was happening? | :13:48. | :13:55.
Impossible. The football clubs, I don't believe it for one minute. I | :13:56. | :13:58.
think there was a conspiracy, paedophile ring. There were people | :13:59. | :14:07.
but had duty to look after the welfare of young boys, coming | :14:08. | :14:12.
through their system. This is their potential future stars, and their | :14:13. | :14:16.
future stars are being sexually abused and sexually assaulted by a | :14:17. | :14:17.
member of their staff. The FA is urgently looking into | :14:18. | :14:33.
those abuse claims. A seven footballer came forward in The | :14:34. | :14:40.
Guardian. The FA chair Greg Clark met Andy Woodward and pledged full | :14:41. | :14:46.
support to adult victims of sexual abuse. I'd then know how the | :14:47. | :14:51.
football Association responded at the time. There was no response? I | :14:52. | :15:01.
believe you. If there was no response at the time then that is | :15:02. | :15:02.
appalling. This is the former coach who four | :15:03. | :15:18.
players toured us this morning abuse them, he has been jailed before for | :15:19. | :15:28.
historical sexual offences, he was found guilty of an offence against a | :15:29. | :15:33.
12-year-old boy committed on a football pitch. Police in Florida | :15:34. | :15:38.
said he had an insatiable appetite for young boys coming he said | :15:39. | :15:42.
himself he was a monster when he gave evidence in court, this was a | :15:43. | :15:45.
monster when he gave evidence in court, this wasn't talking to the | :15:46. | :15:49.
BBC when he was a youth coach at Crewe. They are learning all the | :15:50. | :15:55.
time and we do a lot of talking to them as well as showing them skills, | :15:56. | :16:01.
we explain that that is more to it than coming here one hour a week. We | :16:02. | :16:10.
give them homework. Bennell remains permanently suspended from football. | :16:11. | :16:16.
England captain Wayne Rooney is encouraging any player who has | :16:17. | :16:19.
experienced abuse in their careers to call the helpline so they no | :16:20. | :16:27.
longer suffer in silence. The number is 0800 0232642. | :16:28. | :16:34.
We can speak now to three former players, Peter Shilton, | :16:35. | :16:37.
England's most capped footballer, John Scales, the former Liverpool | :16:38. | :16:39.
and England defender and Michael Bennett, | :16:40. | :16:41.
a former Charlton player who's now the Professional | :16:42. | :16:43.
Football Associations, head of player welfare. | :16:44. | :16:45.
John, I know you saw the interview with the four guys earlier, what did | :16:46. | :16:59.
you think? Like everyone I thought the courage and bravery they should | :17:00. | :17:04.
is incredibly powerful and moving. The emotional shock that we all felt | :17:05. | :17:10.
watching that is nothing compared with the trauma that they are going | :17:11. | :17:16.
through right now, in revealing all that they are but years and years of | :17:17. | :17:20.
living with fat and locking it away and not being able to process it all | :17:21. | :17:28.
go through therapy, that long, long process which in many ways is | :17:29. | :17:31.
starting now, it was difficult watching, very moving. As a | :17:32. | :17:37.
professional footballer I have seen things in the dressing room, verbal | :17:38. | :17:44.
and physical abuse, too few of those stories of what those young players | :17:45. | :17:47.
went through was quite shocking and disturbing. Whichever way you want | :17:48. | :18:06.
to respond, it is a long process for them to respond to, the steps ahead, | :18:07. | :18:20.
all the relevant authorities should come together and make sure it is as | :18:21. | :18:24.
good a process as possible and that we can make sure that this kind of | :18:25. | :18:26.
thing doesn't happen again, that brings it on to this whole issue of | :18:27. | :18:32.
where does it drive paedophiles who have been prevalent in the game in | :18:33. | :18:44.
the past, the figures we have of keeping our children safe. Peter, | :18:45. | :18:56.
how do you respond? Terrific response from the lads, very brave, | :18:57. | :19:00.
to come out and talk about the abuse, you can't think of anything | :19:01. | :19:04.
much worse to happen to you and hopefully by doing what they have | :19:05. | :19:09.
done because obviously they have suppressed it for years and years, | :19:10. | :19:15.
hopefully bringing it out into the open hopefully they will gain some | :19:16. | :19:19.
benefit from Ed first of all but I think it is a society thing. We have | :19:20. | :19:25.
seen it in so many other areas recently, entertainment especially, | :19:26. | :19:28.
it is a society think but when it comes into sport I think we have | :19:29. | :19:35.
tended to turn a blind eye. I think that what happens is that young | :19:36. | :19:39.
footballers, talking about football, they really want to become | :19:40. | :19:44.
footballers, when they are young it is their dream, their parents dream | :19:45. | :19:50.
of it and in some ways they will do anything, in one sense, to try to | :19:51. | :19:58.
achieve that, they won't want to upset coaches, so it is a license | :19:59. | :20:04.
for paedophile coaches to do what they want to do. It has not been | :20:05. | :20:09.
good enough in the past, in terms of bringing it out and having areas | :20:10. | :20:15.
where coaches are checked, was one of the lads said earlier, some of | :20:16. | :20:22.
the checks would be great and when it gets into that situation what can | :20:23. | :20:26.
you do? All you can do is give an area where the parents can ring and | :20:27. | :20:34.
let people know what is going on. So overall great credit to the boys and | :20:35. | :20:38.
hopefully from this it will be a springboard to a lot of other things | :20:39. | :20:44.
happening. Michael, you've been involved in helping Andy and others | :20:45. | :20:47.
who have been abused, what is the nature of the help? When individuals | :20:48. | :20:52.
come forward we've got a triage system so we can find the support | :20:53. | :20:57.
they need and get the process underway. Andy came to us in October | :20:58. | :21:04.
last year, and has been going through the therapy, and this has | :21:05. | :21:07.
come out from that and has given him the strength to come forward and | :21:08. | :21:10.
share what he has gone through with other people. The catalyst for Chris | :21:11. | :21:16.
and Jason to come forward as well. That was the process. Do you think | :21:17. | :21:24.
it could happen now? I am hoping not with the safeguards and things we | :21:25. | :21:27.
have in place now. It is very tightly done. I honestly don't think | :21:28. | :21:34.
it could happen now. Should we have in law mandatory referral so if you | :21:35. | :21:39.
suspect as an adult that anything inappropriate is happening, you | :21:40. | :21:44.
should be compelled to report it? I think so. I think it gives the | :21:45. | :21:47.
individual that freedom to express what they are going through and have | :21:48. | :21:52.
a sauce to go through, to do that. I think that will make life easier for | :21:53. | :21:58.
an individual to show what they having counted. John, what do you | :21:59. | :22:04.
think about this idea that you should be compelled by legislation | :22:05. | :22:08.
to report something if you suspect it? My concern is that you have to | :22:09. | :22:15.
create an environment where people feel safe and confident that the | :22:16. | :22:24.
institutional rigour will be there to back that up and as we have seen | :22:25. | :22:28.
in the Independent inquiry into child sexual abuse, confidence can | :22:29. | :22:38.
be destroyed that the process will be robust and that you will be | :22:39. | :22:41.
believed and safe and in an environment where you can share | :22:42. | :22:44.
those things in confidence. I absolutely agree that that is the | :22:45. | :22:49.
right step to take but it does become mandatory, how it works in | :22:50. | :22:52.
practice will have to be well thought through and ensure that | :22:53. | :22:58.
those victims feel they are getting adequate support in so many areas, | :22:59. | :23:03.
it is not just about disclosure, it is about the support and the | :23:04. | :23:08.
confidence that they have in this process. Stay with us, gentlemen, we | :23:09. | :23:14.
have been taking a look at what measures might be taken to keep | :23:15. | :23:20.
children safe. It is the most popular game in the world, 8 million | :23:21. | :23:25.
people play football in this country but after recent revelations of | :23:26. | :23:28.
historic abuse how vulnerable is the game today and what is being done to | :23:29. | :23:34.
protect children? My concern is not looking back, it is looking at what | :23:35. | :23:38.
we can do now to put in place to protect these children even at grass | :23:39. | :23:42.
roots. It is important that we do not ignore a single thing. From 2001 | :23:43. | :23:48.
the footballers a station put in place new rules. | :23:49. | :24:10.
People to say it was well ahead of other sports in this. What if you | :24:11. | :24:14.
feel the situation is more serious? Each team from the smallest to | :24:15. | :24:16.
professional outfits must now have a trained safeguarding officer, anyone | :24:17. | :24:18.
working with people under 18 must have a criminal record check, that | :24:19. | :24:21.
is more than 50,000 season. The FA says this will screen at anyone who | :24:22. | :24:24.
may pose a risk, others say it is far from a guarantee. What we know | :24:25. | :24:27.
from abuse is that people don't talk about it. They don't come forward. | :24:28. | :24:29.
It is a crime that is covered in silence. So they're very often is | :24:30. | :24:32.
not a criminal record. Critics of the current system say it relies too | :24:33. | :24:35.
much on children being able to come forward and report abuse. In other | :24:36. | :24:38.
countries they have stricter rules. The new portrait appeasing of the | :24:39. | :24:44.
Penn State football coach accused of abusing boys. In the US senior coach | :24:45. | :24:50.
was recently convicted of 45 counts of child abuse but three other men | :24:51. | :24:55.
at Penn State University are still awaiting trial for not telling the | :24:56. | :24:58.
universities about their suspicions. Key to never contacted police. Some | :24:59. | :25:05.
form of that mandatory reporting is in place in other countries. It is a | :25:06. | :25:09.
criminal offence not to come forward and report neglect if you have a | :25:10. | :25:15.
reasonable suspicion it is going on. Introducing mandatory reporting | :25:16. | :25:18.
increases both the number of reports but also the number of reports that | :25:19. | :25:24.
are substantiated. Others think mandatory reporting has its | :25:25. | :25:28.
limitations and could lead to police being of all armed with reports of | :25:29. | :25:33.
abuse that later proved false. The government is now considering how to | :25:34. | :25:35.
tighten the law with the final decision due next year. We cant | :25:36. | :25:44.
speak now to the sports spokesperson for the Labour Party and John | :25:45. | :25:50.
Nicholson is here, from the select committee and Tom Perry is an abuse | :25:51. | :25:55.
survivor who wants to introduce mandatory reporting and we still | :25:56. | :26:00.
have three former players, Peter Shilton, John Scales, and Michael | :26:01. | :26:05.
Bennett. John, why is mandatory reporting essential, in your view? | :26:06. | :26:10.
And the founder of the group so why is it important? We are one of the | :26:11. | :26:14.
few countries in the world that doesn't have it. Just to give you | :26:15. | :26:20.
some idea, 72% of Asian countries have it. 74% of African countries | :26:21. | :26:26.
have some form of mandatory reporting, 86% of Europe, and even | :26:27. | :26:29.
more in the Americas and yet the government says that we've got it | :26:30. | :26:34.
right. Clearly given the fact that we have the Independent inquiry into | :26:35. | :26:37.
child sexual abuse and these extraordinary revelations in sport | :26:38. | :26:42.
we have not got it right. What would mandatory reporting mean in | :26:43. | :26:48.
practical terms? We would be following principles elsewhere | :26:49. | :26:51.
principally in Australia where they operate well, anyone with a | :26:52. | :26:56.
suspicion on reasonable grounds has to report that to a triage service. | :26:57. | :27:01.
That in principle is operating now in this country. The only problem is | :27:02. | :27:06.
that it is discretionary to report it, not mandatory. Would the SNP | :27:07. | :27:14.
support that? I'm not sure how it would work. If you had a suspicion | :27:15. | :27:18.
on reasonable grounds you'd have to tell the police. What is the penalty | :27:19. | :27:25.
if you don't, is there one? That is interesting, yes, there is a | :27:26. | :27:29.
penalty, it is a fine through court it's all in our submission where we | :27:30. | :27:35.
drafted the registration for the governments consideration -- drafted | :27:36. | :27:40.
the legislation. So you would criminalise someone who had the | :27:41. | :27:42.
suspicion on reasonable grounds and didn't report it. What happens for | :27:43. | :27:49.
example if you are talking about a 17 boy or an 18 young adult who | :27:50. | :27:56.
knows that his 15-year-old friend is being abused, would that 18-year-old | :27:57. | :28:01.
be subject to criminal penalties if he feels intimidated and will not | :28:02. | :28:07.
come forward? Not at all, that indicates you don't understand the | :28:08. | :28:10.
system in England, in England, with children and 18 if there is an | :28:11. | :28:14.
offence by someone who is defined as a child under 18 who is in an | :28:15. | :28:20.
educational setting working in a regulated activity because we're | :28:21. | :28:24.
talking about mandatory reporting only in regulated activities which | :28:25. | :28:29.
include sport and schools and Faith settings. If that gets referred to | :28:30. | :28:37.
children's services and the protocol exists now, we're not seeking to | :28:38. | :28:42.
criminalise a bite of 17... If you are 18 in that situation you could | :28:43. | :28:48.
be subject to penalties? Not if you are in a regulated activity. We are | :28:49. | :28:53.
only applying mandatory reporting to a regulated activity, as defined by | :28:54. | :28:58.
the act of 2006. Would you support that? Rosena? It's about having a | :28:59. | :29:13.
robust system but also creating a safe space for people to come | :29:14. | :29:16.
forward and say when they are concerned. I must say that 99.9% of | :29:17. | :29:23.
coaches and officials work hard and have the interests of the children | :29:24. | :29:26.
at heart. But we must crack down on sexual predators. Tom, you are an | :29:27. | :29:33.
abuse survivor. Just how difficult is it to speak up? I kept quiet | :29:34. | :29:42.
about it for six a mere 38 years. OK! And I must tell you it is | :29:43. | :29:46.
incredibly difficult. It's an absolute life changer too many | :29:47. | :29:50.
people. Not everyone but to meet it certainly is. Living a life where I | :29:51. | :29:56.
have no respect for authority and to be frank, anyone carrying a | :29:57. | :29:59.
clipboard walking up to me is in deep trouble about knowing it | :30:00. | :30:02.
because it is a statement of authority and it is a problem. -- | :30:03. | :30:08.
without knowing it. And frankly the cost of child abuse, the NSPCC has | :30:09. | :30:14.
done some research and estimates, conservatively, we do question it as | :30:15. | :30:17.
we question a lot of things about the NSPCC, to be frank, the cost of | :30:18. | :30:24.
it, they estimated in 2012 was ?3.2 billion. This goes into police, | :30:25. | :30:30.
court services, drug addiction, crime, and mental health services in | :30:31. | :30:34.
which I've taken part. It came out in a group that I was involved in, | :30:35. | :30:38.
seven out of nine people have been abused in childhood. | :30:39. | :30:45.
Were it not for child abuse, frankly we would have space. From your | :30:46. | :30:53.
committee's point of view your chairman has written to the FA, due | :30:54. | :30:57.
any stay on how widespread this might be in terms of historical | :30:58. | :31:02.
claims? And use satisfied the FA is taking this seriously enough now, | :31:03. | :31:08.
even if it wasn't then? 20 years ago there was a dispatches programme | :31:09. | :31:12.
that looked at this, and Channel 4. The recommendation was that the FA | :31:13. | :31:15.
should take this very seriously indeed, this was in 1997. And it | :31:16. | :31:20.
wouldn't comment at the time. Precisely. We now know that this | :31:21. | :31:25.
hotline has been set up and over 50 Calder almost immediately. In the | :31:26. | :31:32.
first two hours, 50. -- called it almost immediately. It is clearly a | :31:33. | :31:36.
huge problem. Our select committee is written to the FA to find out | :31:37. | :31:41.
what its action plan is. We are keen to get them into speak was and then | :31:42. | :31:46.
decide how we will take it forward. It is busy and enormous problem, not | :31:47. | :31:50.
least because what we had today is what we all know from our friends, | :31:51. | :31:55.
from our family, from our constituents. That kids are often | :31:56. | :31:58.
scared to tell their parents because they do want to upset them which is | :31:59. | :32:02.
a huge problem. I want to ask our former players, Chris, Jason, Andy | :32:03. | :32:12.
and Steve, said they thought they were adults that knew what was going | :32:13. | :32:16.
on. I won't ask you Michael, had you heard rumours? In regards to what | :32:17. | :32:24.
was going on? Without naming any names, obviously. When you are | :32:25. | :32:28.
playing you heard rumours and a number of players will say the same | :32:29. | :32:32.
thing. But without evidence you can't do anything. Yes, the rumours | :32:33. | :32:36.
were there but no one was brave enough them to step forward in come | :32:37. | :32:40.
forward with those allegations. That is why we are here today. We've both | :32:41. | :32:48.
been around the BBC for while, but there were always rumours about | :32:49. | :32:52.
Jimmy Savile, but hard evidence was quite a different thing. Do the kids | :32:53. | :33:02.
talk to other kids? I ask the former players and they didn't talk to each | :33:03. | :33:06.
other, they would only exchange a lot, but didn't speak about it. You | :33:07. | :33:12.
don't, though PPP mention this, but as kids when you are abuse and abuse | :33:13. | :33:17.
is repeated it is a very dangerous word but this is it, you feel | :33:18. | :33:23.
complicit. And complicity silences you. Without naming any names, in | :33:24. | :33:33.
your long and distinguished playing career did you hear rumours? No, not | :33:34. | :33:43.
really. Not only abuse side. It was more, maybe that one or two players | :33:44. | :33:49.
may be gay. But not on side. We have to be careful but when we're talking | :33:50. | :33:57.
about coaches, and boys really. I know there may be some adults or | :33:58. | :34:03.
teenagers involved. The coaches in this country, some are just alluded | :34:04. | :34:10.
to it, 99% or 98% are great people who really do a great job. You have | :34:11. | :34:15.
to be careful that we don't stigmatise coaches of kids. It is a | :34:16. | :34:25.
very small minority that do this. Going forward, we have to make sure | :34:26. | :34:29.
that the people who have been abused that feel they can come forward now, | :34:30. | :34:33.
there is a great platform for them to get help. These brave lads that | :34:34. | :34:42.
came forward will help in that. In the future, we have to put a lot | :34:43. | :34:48.
tighter regulations in. The FA years ago is nothing like today. A lot of | :34:49. | :34:53.
things are brushed under the carpet and not discussed. Now it is more | :34:54. | :35:00.
open. They put hotline in, where 50 odd calls happened yesterday. They | :35:01. | :35:04.
are more progressive. Years ago might be brushed under the carpet it | :35:05. | :35:09.
is not supposed to happen. As I said earlier on, youngsters want to | :35:10. | :35:13.
become footballers, their parents do and even if they know there are | :35:14. | :35:16.
rumours they won't want to put their kid in jeopardy in case it gets | :35:17. | :35:20.
buried at the club, or something. Though all of these things to | :35:21. | :35:26.
consider. I wonder if you think these historic sexual abuse claims | :35:27. | :35:29.
in football should be brought into the National sexual abuse enquiry. I | :35:30. | :35:34.
think they should. We need to do whatever we can to stop this | :35:35. | :35:39.
happening. I am a mother myself and I know open down the country parents | :35:40. | :35:43.
will be frightened. Fighting about what it means for them to take their | :35:44. | :35:47.
child to somewhere and leave them unaccompanied. It is really really | :35:48. | :35:51.
important. I've spoken to the FA already. They have been working very | :35:52. | :35:57.
hard recently have designated safeguarding officers, but we need | :35:58. | :36:01.
to make sure that these officers have robust training. I would really | :36:02. | :36:08.
welcome any measures that it would take to ensure that there was a safe | :36:09. | :36:13.
platform for people to come out and report. John, without naming any | :36:14. | :36:16.
names did you hear rumours when you're playing? Yes. In clubs we've | :36:17. | :36:27.
seen, there was always innuendo and things said. We had all the other | :36:28. | :36:33.
stories and all the other fanciful rumours about players and everything | :36:34. | :36:37.
else. I also had rumours about players themselves, senior players, | :36:38. | :36:46.
abusive, aggressive and I saw that first-hand other players. That was | :36:47. | :36:51.
also an issue. You come back the full-sized call. Those youngsters | :36:52. | :36:54.
grow up in an environment where they feel that this is part and parcel of | :36:55. | :37:01.
playing football, being in this environment. As the gentleman said | :37:02. | :37:05.
before, if you don't accept it and the guilt you feel, and the clump | :37:06. | :37:10.
green complicity you feel in it makes you feel compelled but that is | :37:11. | :37:13.
part and parcel of the environment you in. -- the complicity you feel. | :37:14. | :37:21.
I'm scared to death of my children into ballet, jazz, swimming, | :37:22. | :37:25.
athletics and we look at people, look at coaches in those positions | :37:26. | :37:30.
of power and influence should with an eye of suspicion on every single | :37:31. | :37:33.
one of them. That is a horrible place to be the battered the world | :37:34. | :37:40.
in which we live. Therefore, it is OK to say football has this problem | :37:41. | :37:45.
but we all appreciate that society has this problem. Paedophiles | :37:46. | :37:48.
extensively at large in this country and across the world. There has to | :37:49. | :37:55.
be a process that is put into place that safeguards those youngsters. | :37:56. | :38:01.
The mandatory reporting is a good step as long as it is implemented in | :38:02. | :38:05.
the right way. Politicians have to be careful about saying all these | :38:06. | :38:11.
fantastic new systems that you put in, without the rigour of learning | :38:12. | :38:14.
the lessons and passing the blame towards the FA. 20 years ago it was | :38:15. | :38:21.
very different on the way it is today. Use of the way they came out | :38:22. | :38:25.
on this helpline together and put that where players can come forward. | :38:26. | :38:30.
My fear is that Paul has the resources to put these things into | :38:31. | :38:35.
place. -- football has the resources. Other sports of Little | :38:36. | :38:38.
funding are not able to do that and how, without the money do weep Bush | :38:39. | :38:45.
paedophiles out of that tier of the game. -- do we push paedophiles. How | :38:46. | :38:53.
do we pushed those predators into other areas. We never break the | :38:54. | :38:59.
cycle. -- do we pushed those predators. John, final word. 40 | :39:00. | :39:06.
years ago there was no need for anyone to port the rape of a child. | :39:07. | :39:12.
Today nothing has changed. Until it changes there will be no... It is a | :39:13. | :39:20.
vital component of a functioning child protection system and we have | :39:21. | :39:25.
two habit. The government gives the outcome of its consultation... They | :39:26. | :39:32.
do not want it. Absolutely. Just look at the bias in the consultation | :39:33. | :39:37.
paper. They even admitted that the most important piece of evidence, it | :39:38. | :39:46.
was a seven year longitudinal study. I will talk to the sports minister | :39:47. | :39:54.
about this tomorrow. Footballers do what we're doing. The Labour team | :39:55. | :40:02.
taking terribly seriously. Let's bring you a summary of this | :40:03. | :40:03.
morning's news. More former football players have | :40:04. | :40:06.
alleged that they were sexually abused in the sport's youth system | :40:07. | :40:08.
during the 1980s and 90s. Jason Dunford and Chris Unsworth | :40:09. | :40:11.
have waived their right to anonymity to tell this programme - | :40:12. | :40:13.
that they were targeted by the former Crewe Alexandra | :40:14. | :40:16.
coach, Barry Bennell. A total of 7 former footballers have | :40:17. | :40:17.
now spoken out publicly More video footage has emerged | :40:18. | :40:20.
of an attack on a pair of police officers by a group of up to thirty | :40:21. | :40:24.
schoolchildren in South East London. The officers had been trying | :40:25. | :40:28.
to search a suspect for a knife. One of them was beaten to the ground | :40:29. | :40:30.
and kicked in the head, while his colleague was punched | :40:31. | :40:34.
in the jaw when she tried The Crown Prosecution Service has | :40:35. | :40:40.
been given the details of an investigation by the IPCC | :40:41. | :40:44.
into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of Jermaine Baker | :40:45. | :40:46.
in north London last year. Mr Baker died as the result | :40:47. | :40:49.
of a single gunshot wound during a Metropolitan Police | :40:50. | :40:51.
operation in Bracknell Close, That's a summary of the latest news, | :40:52. | :40:54.
join me for BBC Newsroom Here's Hugh now with this | :40:55. | :41:00.
morning's sport headlines. The start of the big | :41:01. | :41:03.
Formula One weekend has begun, even a victory may not guarantee | :41:04. | :41:05.
Lewis Hamilton retains his World Title, but he has | :41:06. | :41:08.
started his challenge well, by setting the fastest time | :41:09. | :41:10.
in first practice ahead Wayne Rooney is the perfect player | :41:11. | :41:12.
and should be 'shown more respect' according | :41:13. | :41:17.
to his Manchester United teammate. Rooney became United's record | :41:18. | :41:19.
goalscorer in Europe in their 4-nil They're yet to reach | :41:20. | :41:29.
the knockout stages. The same is true of Southampton | :41:30. | :41:35.
after their 1-0 defeat They need a goalless draw or a win | :41:36. | :41:37.
in their final group And Joss Buttler will replace | :41:38. | :41:41.
Ben Duckett for England's third Test Buttler will bat at 7 for the match | :41:42. | :41:45.
which starts in the early hours That's all the sport for now | :41:46. | :41:49.
but I'll be back in around Analysts think Black Friday sales | :41:50. | :41:54.
in the UK could top ?2 billion but are the sale prices you see | :41:55. | :41:57.
really as good as they look? Pete Moorey, is Head of Campaigns | :41:58. | :42:02.
at the consumer website Which and Helen Dewdney is a Consumer | :42:03. | :42:05.
expert at the website Is that right? The site is called | :42:06. | :42:27.
that. And you are a blogger? Yes, sorry there was no punctuation in | :42:28. | :42:28.
that sentence whatsoever. Which looked at 20 electrical | :42:29. | :42:31.
items across retailers on Black Friday last year to find | :42:32. | :42:33.
out if the deals were We found that about 40% of the deals | :42:34. | :42:47.
were cheaper later and many more before. So, don't get too carried | :42:48. | :42:53.
away today. It is too late. People have been up since five o'clock. | :42:54. | :42:57.
There are deals out there. I walked down Oxford Street and know when not | :42:58. | :43:01.
big queues. They were all inside. A lot of people online this year. And | :43:02. | :43:06.
that is why they get in the deals. Black Friday has become a big | :43:07. | :43:10.
season, the whole weekend we've seen a lot of deals in the days running | :43:11. | :43:15.
up. The key thing is coming you need to do your research or there is a | :43:16. | :43:19.
danger you about that, see some things online or in shops and you'll | :43:20. | :43:24.
buy it and it won't actually have been the cheapest price. Really, you | :43:25. | :43:32.
can't do this online, but if you are in a store you can ask whether it's | :43:33. | :43:37.
been cheaper before and is likely to get cheaper before Christmas. To | :43:38. | :43:42.
which they will say no and no. Yes, recess the problem green products | :43:43. | :43:45.
you want. Find out what a decent products. A lot of things you will | :43:46. | :43:51.
find last year were things that were on sale last year. If you want the | :43:52. | :43:57.
latest thing, find out about it. Go on our website. We will tell you | :43:58. | :44:01.
what the best TV, copy machine, is. Then resets the price. -- then be | :44:02. | :44:10.
searched the price. We do price tracking. People tweeted outlaws | :44:11. | :44:14.
today. They said they saw something on sale for Black Friday the 90 | :44:15. | :44:18.
quid, but they bought it from 40 quid. I think it is and electric | :44:19. | :44:24.
toothbrush. That is naughty. Some of the things we found last year we | :44:25. | :44:27.
have reported the competition authorities and asked them to look | :44:28. | :44:29.
at it. What's your advice to anyone looking | :44:30. | :44:32.
for a bargain today? Do the research online. Just treated | :44:33. | :44:46.
like any sales. It is hard, you get sucked in. The amount of junk | :44:47. | :44:49.
e-mails I've had saying Black Friday, Black Friday 20%, 40%, R. | :44:50. | :44:58.
Certainly I went online. I looked it, some you win, some you lose. | :44:59. | :45:03.
Army Times Dubai things in the sales that you've just bought the week | :45:04. | :45:08.
before. It is the same things. -- how many times do you buy things in | :45:09. | :45:12.
the sales. There was something in their lowest cheaper in another | :45:13. | :45:20.
store. So be cattle of it. People end up buying things they don't | :45:21. | :45:29.
want, or need. It depends what the store is and what the terms and | :45:30. | :45:33.
conditions. If you have bought an item and a change amount on it then | :45:34. | :45:37.
you can take it back to the bigger stores the bigger stores will | :45:38. | :45:40.
usually take it back. But, if you have bought online you have more | :45:41. | :45:44.
rights under the consumer regulations. You have got right | :45:45. | :45:49.
within 14 days you can send it back. But, if you need to look at that | :45:50. | :45:52.
terms and conditions. If there's nothing wrong with it if it not | :45:53. | :45:57.
faulty then you might have to play Willey paper posted. You'd make sure | :45:58. | :46:02.
you are looking at these things. Thank you very much, and thank you | :46:03. | :46:03.
for your patience this morning. Three babies on average are born | :46:04. | :46:06.
addicted to drugs in England every The BBC has gained exclusive access | :46:07. | :46:09.
to the UK's only rehabilitation and treatment centre where mothers | :46:10. | :46:15.
can overcome a drug or alcohol addiction whilst living | :46:16. | :46:17.
with their children. I've been addicted to | :46:18. | :46:19.
heroin for 13 years. I started with recreational drugs, | :46:20. | :46:29.
party drugs, and it led to harder drugs, | :46:30. | :46:35.
crack and heroin. I had a very, very nasty, | :46:36. | :46:39.
nasty habit when I came here. Her son was born addicted to drugs, | :46:40. | :46:46.
but living here means she can keep him | :46:47. | :46:48.
with her. Do you feel a bit calmer now you've | :46:49. | :46:53.
got it? So knowing that you | :46:54. | :47:00.
can do this and... Still have my little man | :47:01. | :47:07.
Often mums like Louise would have their children taken into | :47:08. | :47:17.
This is the only rehab centre in the country where she can live | :47:18. | :47:21.
I mean waking up with this little chap | :47:22. | :47:25.
To have him still with me is amazing, | :47:26. | :47:28.
Because they tried to take him straight from | :47:29. | :47:31.
Do you think you could do this without him? | :47:32. | :47:34.
Around 20 women enter these gates every year. | :47:35. | :47:51.
We've got to keep the | :47:52. | :47:54.
location secret because many are fleeing domestic violence. | :47:55. | :47:56.
They'll have to follow a strict drug and | :47:57. | :47:58.
The hope is they'll leave here in around six months' time, | :47:59. | :48:03.
Louise is graduating from the course. | :48:04. | :48:26.
What have you learned from this last 12 weeks of freedom | :48:27. | :48:29.
But it doesn't mean she'll definitely keep | :48:30. | :48:36.
Louise has just gone into one of the most important meetings | :48:37. | :48:41.
She'll be meeting with her key workers and her | :48:42. | :48:49.
social workers to first of all find out how she's getting on, and, more | :48:50. | :48:53.
importantly, find out how her little boy's getting on and whether they'll | :48:54. | :48:55.
There is still not a 100% chance that I'll be able to keep him. | :48:56. | :49:02.
Right now I'm still pretty shocked to be told that I | :49:03. | :49:06.
Let's speak now to Hannah Shead, who runs the Trevi House | :49:07. | :49:12.
rehabilitation centre featured in that film. | :49:13. | :49:13.
Emma, who doesn't want us to use her surname - | :49:14. | :49:16.
she stayed at the Trevi centre with her twins to | :49:17. | :49:18.
And Dr Ken Checinski, Consultant addiction | :49:19. | :49:20.
psychiatrist at Change, Grow, Live - a service | :49:21. | :49:22.
which supports people affected by substance misuse. | :49:23. | :49:24.
How important is it to keep Mum and child together during recovery? | :49:25. | :49:27.
Incredibly important. Incredibly. What we see is the difference that | :49:28. | :49:31.
it makes for mothers and for children. In terms of them getting | :49:32. | :49:38.
off the drugs? Absolutely. Emma, what drugs were you taking when you | :49:39. | :49:43.
are pregnant with twins? My addiction spiralled out of control | :49:44. | :49:50.
after my twins were born so they were not born dependent on any kind | :49:51. | :49:54.
of substance although I did have a couple of lapses and I was pregnant | :49:55. | :49:58.
and that was crack cocaine and heroin. It was not a very nice thing | :49:59. | :50:03.
to have to live with but I'm trying to do things a better way now. So | :50:04. | :50:09.
that's good. How do you reflect on that time? It's important to | :50:10. | :50:12.
remember it because if I do not it will be easy to go back there. I | :50:13. | :50:18.
never forget it but I don't dwell on it because that could easily take a | :50:19. | :50:22.
back down that road so it's about doing positive right things now. | :50:23. | :50:29.
Ken, you helped about 500 parents over the years, it could be more. | :50:30. | :50:33.
What's the most effective way of getting them clean? The most | :50:34. | :50:36.
effective way of helping people get clean is to look at individual | :50:37. | :50:42.
needs. There is no one size fits all solution. We place a lot of emphasis | :50:43. | :50:46.
on the individual focus to show people respect and to empower them, | :50:47. | :50:51.
I know that wood is overused that to empower them to make their choices, | :50:52. | :50:55.
not my choice is all the nurses choices or the GP's choices or the | :50:56. | :51:02.
nurse's choices, their own choices. What is your view of the mothers | :51:03. | :51:05.
confronting that recovery with their children. It's extremely important | :51:06. | :51:11.
because if we can do anything to break the cycle of addiction for | :51:12. | :51:14.
that family, perhaps other family members have been affected in the | :51:15. | :51:17.
past so if we can do anything to break that cycle that is the most | :51:18. | :51:21.
important thing that parent, that family and also to the children, as | :51:22. | :51:26.
children and perhaps when they grow up to become parents themselves. Is | :51:27. | :51:33.
the stigma of taking drugs while you are pregnant sometimes stop you | :51:34. | :51:39.
asking for help? Without a doubt. The shame, the shame that you feel, | :51:40. | :51:45.
the guilt that you feel, you feel you don't even deserve to be a mum, | :51:46. | :51:55.
you know, it is that strong, even now, it's like a huge thing. I don't | :51:56. | :52:01.
underestimate your courage for doing that. If one person can watch this | :52:02. | :52:05.
and get some hope and realise that there is help out there I want to | :52:06. | :52:09.
speak out and even if it can help one person that is my job done. And | :52:10. | :52:14.
your approach is completely non-judgemental, that's important to | :52:15. | :52:21.
add. Absolutely. What people don't always realise is, women that come | :52:22. | :52:31.
to services like trevi have sometimes been through terrible | :52:32. | :52:35.
childhoods with abuse, none of them choose to end up in this position as | :52:36. | :52:39.
parents or pregnant women with drug and alcohol addiction, and to | :52:40. | :52:44.
overcome some of that stigma really will help women to come forward and | :52:45. | :52:51.
ask for the help they need. How much of a motivating factor is it, Emma, | :52:52. | :52:55.
when you know that your child could be taken from you if you continue | :52:56. | :53:03.
down the drugs route? Huge. By the time I finally reached Trevi, and it | :53:04. | :53:08.
was not a smooth road to get there, I had to fight really hard for it. I | :53:09. | :53:14.
very nearly didn't get there. I was at a point of desperation, I was | :53:15. | :53:19.
desperate, because like you've heard from the other girls in the film, if | :53:20. | :53:22.
I didn't have my twins now I wouldn't be killed. It was that | :53:23. | :53:29.
desperate. 115%! I would not want to be here without my children. I could | :53:30. | :53:35.
not live like that. I need to do something about it. Ken, of course | :53:36. | :53:40.
addiction is a motivating factor, that it children might be removed | :53:41. | :53:44.
from you but you are addicted. It is an illness, a condition, it is not | :53:45. | :53:48.
easy to say, I'm going to stop taking the crack cocaine or | :53:49. | :53:55.
whatever. And the sort of motivation you showed, Emma, is very important. | :53:56. | :54:02.
To use that as a factor. And one aim of our therapy is to ensure that | :54:03. | :54:06.
people turn that sort of external motivation, the threat of losing | :54:07. | :54:11.
children, into their own recovery that they want for themselves in | :54:12. | :54:14.
order to be good parents, rather than just to be good parents. Thank | :54:15. | :54:20.
you all very much, thank you for coming in. Nice to meet you. We | :54:21. | :54:27.
began the programme by talking to four footballers who courageously | :54:28. | :54:30.
talked about the kind of abuse that they have suffered. As young boys, | :54:31. | :54:35.
at the hands of their youth team coach. And so many of you have been | :54:36. | :54:40.
moved by what they were able to say on national television that you got | :54:41. | :54:46.
in touch. We'll talk to Nick Johns in Plymouth. Nick was Steve's former | :54:47. | :54:52.
teacher. Paul Jacobs is in Kent and is involved in football at a | :54:53. | :54:55.
district level and has reported a coach in the past. Thank you very | :54:56. | :55:02.
much for talking to us. As Steve's former teacher what would you like | :55:03. | :55:07.
to say about the way he's spoken out today? Hello, Victoria. It was very | :55:08. | :55:13.
emotional for me to see him and the other lads talking as they did. I | :55:14. | :55:22.
have huge admiration for them. I remember Steve is a little lad of | :55:23. | :55:29.
12, 13, he went off to soccer school, to bigger and better things. | :55:30. | :55:35.
I think he has been extremely brave. As have the others, to speak out as | :55:36. | :55:44.
he has. I think those of us who have the privilege and responsibility of | :55:45. | :55:49.
either teaching or caring, coaching young people, coaching children, it | :55:50. | :55:56.
is a huge responsibility, and it is absolutely awful that these guys | :55:57. | :56:02.
have done what they have done, and others in other areas that we know | :56:03. | :56:08.
of as well. Steve, very best wishes to you in the future. I hope you can | :56:09. | :56:15.
overcome the difficulties you have had, and all the other chaps there, | :56:16. | :56:22.
my heart goes out to you all. Paul, I wonder what impact it had only | :56:23. | :56:27.
watching the four gentlemen talking this morning? Watching the show this | :56:28. | :56:33.
morning I really felt those guys. You can't imagine what they must | :56:34. | :56:36.
have gone through. I had to report someone ten years ago who was | :56:37. | :56:43.
working with players, and fortunately I had the support of | :56:44. | :56:53.
Mike County and I am a youth worker now but I had the support of my | :56:54. | :56:56.
youth worker at the time. I was interviewed by detectives, it went | :56:57. | :57:01.
all the way to Soho Square, where the FA were based at the time. | :57:02. | :57:07.
Fortunately this man is no longer involved in football. Briefly, Paul, | :57:08. | :57:14.
how difficult or otherwise was that decision you made to report that | :57:15. | :57:19.
individual, again, don't name any names. Of course not. It was | :57:20. | :57:22.
extremely difficult because it was a colleague. And from what I saw on a | :57:23. | :57:30.
couple of occasions, I felt extremely uncomfortable. | :57:31. | :57:32.
Fortunately, things have moved on and changed. We now have welfare | :57:33. | :57:42.
offices. -- officers. And CRB checks. All the rest of it. I would | :57:43. | :57:50.
not dream of going into a dressing room with players unless I had | :57:51. | :57:55.
either parents or and a manager with me. Thank you, Paul, Nick, Steve | :57:56. | :58:05.
former teacher. So many people have been in touch, if you would like to | :58:06. | :58:10.
watch a special interview of -- special version of the interview we | :58:11. | :58:14.
did with the four players it will be shown on the BBC News Channel at | :58:15. | :58:22.
8:30pm and you can find the full interview and our programme today. | :58:23. | :58:25.
We will be back on Monday when we will be hearing from children with | :58:26. | :58:27.
facial Give yourself a huge round | :58:28. | :58:30.
of applause. Your donations make | :58:31. | :58:34.
a difference to the lives... And young people... | :58:35. | :58:40.
Throughout the UK. | :58:41. | :58:44. |
