Now for the latest financial news with Sally Bundock

:00:00.:00:10.

Yahoo's accused of secretly scanning millions of e-mails of behalf

:00:11.:00:19.

And Google takes on Apple and Samsung launching a smartphone

:00:20.:00:27.

with artificial intelligence at its heart.

:00:28.:00:35.

Also in the programme, a special report looking

:00:36.:00:45.

at the problems faced by foreign business owners in China.

:00:46.:00:48.

The internet giant, Yahoo, secretly scanned millions

:00:49.:00:56.

of its users' e-mail accounts on behalf of the US government

:00:57.:00:59.

according to the Reuters news agency.

:01:00.:01:01.

It's report suggests the company secretly built custom software

:01:02.:01:04.

The news comes after Yahoo was bought for $5 billion

:01:05.:01:08.

Our North America technology correspondent, Dave Lee,

:01:09.:01:11.

Yahoo May have hoped its troubles were behind it when it finally

:01:12.:01:26.

penned that deal to sell itself to the rise in. But since then it has

:01:27.:01:33.

just been bad news for this company. Two weeks ago we had the company was

:01:34.:01:37.

hit by a huge cyber breach, the biggest in history, affecting half a

:01:38.:01:43.

billion of its users. Now we have been told they themselves may have

:01:44.:01:46.

been complicit in creating secret software to monitor information

:01:47.:01:49.

being sent through their e-mail accounts. It was looking for certain

:01:50.:01:55.

strings of words or characters and communicated that the US

:01:56.:01:58.

intelligence services. We do not know what they were looking for. But

:01:59.:02:05.

it was done in the 15. They are saying it is simply a US company

:02:06.:02:12.

abiding by US law. For Verizon, the potential new owner of Yahoo, they

:02:13.:02:21.

refused to comment at all. BBC News, San Francisco.

:02:22.:02:23.

In the meantime, Google has showcased two new smartphones

:02:24.:02:26.

and a whole host of other devices, in what the company describes

:02:27.:02:29.

The search engine provider gave us a glimpse of its so-called "home

:02:30.:02:34.

It's a voice activated device which uses artificial intelligence

:02:35.:02:36.

Our technology correspondent, Rory Cellan-Jones, has the details.

:02:37.:02:44.

OK, Google, why is Google getting into hardware? It is the software

:02:45.:02:50.

giant whose name defines Internet search. But now Google wants to be

:02:51.:02:55.

big in hardware. For the first time, it is launching two high-end

:02:56.:02:58.

smartphones it has designed itself. It claims they have the best cameras

:02:59.:03:05.

on the market. By the way, unlike the new iPhone from Apple, they also

:03:06.:03:08.

had the new headphones socket. Perhaps more significant is Google

:03:09.:03:14.

Home, a voice controlled intelligent speaker designed to be at the centre

:03:15.:03:19.

of your smart household. Play the trailer on the living room. What

:03:20.:03:26.

this is doing is incredibly difficult, using the national

:03:27.:03:31.

language processing to understand what I say and machine learning to

:03:32.:03:35.

understand my intent, then it is looking in a knowledge graph to find

:03:36.:03:39.

something that matches that, a movie trailer, then goes to YouTube to

:03:40.:03:43.

find the actual streaming video, then it looks for what it should

:03:44.:03:49.

stream at two, the TV in the same room as the person.

:03:50.:03:50.

That was Michael Sundermeyer, Director of User Experience

:03:51.:03:52.

at Google, talking us through Google Home.

:03:53.:03:54.

Matti Littunen is from the research company, Enders Analysis.

:03:55.:04:04.

Good morning. Good morning, Sally your thoughts. The phones to begin

:04:05.:04:12.

with. What do you think? The first thing that pops out of the phones is

:04:13.:04:18.

the price. They are expensive devices compared to other Google

:04:19.:04:22.

hardware bucks out there just launched. These are clearly top of

:04:23.:04:28.

the line smartphones. Google is absolutely making clear this is a

:04:29.:04:34.

showcase of what is possible at the top end of the Android experience.

:04:35.:04:38.

It is going head-to-head with Apple in terms of price. Why would I get a

:04:39.:04:45.

Google phone instead of an iPhone seven? The features are the hardware

:04:46.:04:49.

being on par with iPhones. On top of that, you have exclusive access to

:04:50.:04:55.

some Google services before they are deployed on other Android devices.

:04:56.:05:00.

Of course, artificial intelligence in this instance is part of the big

:05:01.:05:07.

push. You have Siri on the iPhone. Is this more intelligent on Google?

:05:08.:05:12.

You could say that. It is better at answering follow-up queries. It is

:05:13.:05:16.

better at figuring out the context of the user. What does the user

:05:17.:05:21.

wanting the situation, in this user case? In those ways, yes, Google is

:05:22.:05:31.

better. And the Google Home device has got a lot of attention. It does

:05:32.:05:35.

mean it is fairly cheap and you can eliminate many cables in your home.

:05:36.:05:40.

It can be attractive. But I would be concerned about privacy. That is a

:05:41.:05:45.

key question for consumers. Google has made much about how it makes

:05:46.:05:49.

they do it collect anonymous and how strong the encryption is for the

:05:50.:05:53.

data. But the fact we have the assistant on ever increasing amounts

:05:54.:05:57.

of devices at home and on smartphones and the Google is

:05:58.:06:01.

fundamentally anti- advertising business, consumers should be asking

:06:02.:06:05.

questions about what this means for them. -- an advertising. And this is

:06:06.:06:16.

on the date Yahoo Is accused of selling our data on. Yes, they said

:06:17.:06:23.

they were never asked for that level of access from the US government and

:06:24.:06:28.

had they said that they would have said no. Google has ways of

:06:29.:06:31.

preventing this level of government access. But, it does raise the

:06:32.:06:39.

question, when the Internet expands into more and more devices in our

:06:40.:06:43.

homes and lives, how is the data collected and how can we control

:06:44.:06:48.

what is collected... And who is looking at it? Exactly. Thank you

:06:49.:06:54.

for your time and your opinions. And let's have a conversation on line.

:06:55.:07:00.

Share your thoughts about these devices.

:07:01.:07:00.

Now, throughout this week, we've been looking at trade

:07:01.:07:03.

and its impact around the world and one nation that has relied

:07:04.:07:06.

heavily on exports to international markets is China.

:07:07.:07:08.

But, almost four decades after the world's second largest

:07:09.:07:11.

economy opened up to overseas trade, US representatives have told the BBC

:07:12.:07:14.

that it's not a level playing field for foreign companies

:07:15.:07:17.

When President Xi Jinping posted world leaders last month, he told

:07:18.:07:34.

the G20 about the need for open and transparent global trade. -- hosted.

:07:35.:07:40.

It is some way off. There is still a strong feeling for foreign companies

:07:41.:07:45.

be decks are stacked against them. This could refer to access the

:07:46.:07:49.

capital by some big Chinese players and the industrial policies that

:07:50.:07:54.

favour Chinese policies in some areas. China started opening up its

:07:55.:07:59.

economy almost 40 years ago. Robots too much of the work now. Joint

:08:00.:08:05.

ventures like this one between the UK's Jaguar Land Rover and a Chinese

:08:06.:08:12.

company are the only way for some. How is it for foreigners without $1

:08:13.:08:16.

billion to invest? People like this New Zealander, Justin, have been

:08:17.:08:21.

able to set up here on the own since China joins the WTO in 2001. They

:08:22.:08:28.

will be interested in what you are doing more often. They are always

:08:29.:08:32.

generally very friendly and helpful to deal with. But they are quite

:08:33.:08:37.

keen to up why all the rules. If there is a fine Jude Law some kind

:08:38.:08:40.

of non-compliance, they are definitely very key to apply that

:08:41.:08:48.

one. -- fine due for some. With local authorities, we don't see that

:08:49.:08:52.

at all. Opening up to the world has helped make China a rich country,

:08:53.:08:56.

but much of the country remains closed to foreigners. Some of the

:08:57.:09:00.

biggest names that have excelled here face one serious problem. This

:09:01.:09:13.

is exactly the type of thing that drives companies mad. Fake goods are

:09:14.:09:20.

ubiquitous here. Protecting international property remains a

:09:21.:09:25.

challenge in China. What is this? Some technology firms even keep

:09:26.:09:28.

their best kept secrets out of the country, all of which makes trading

:09:29.:09:34.

in China different to trading with China. No trade trading in China. It

:09:35.:09:44.

is a public holiday. Elsewhere we do have trade. Gains in Japan with a

:09:45.:09:51.

weaker yen. The pound is grabbing all the attention at the moment. I

:09:52.:09:55.

can't show it to you... Grow quickly. See you soon.

:09:56.:10:15.

Diane James is stepping down just 18 days after she got the job. She

:10:16.:10:22.

succeeded Nigel Farage on the 16th of September after he quit following

:10:23.:10:25.

the UK's vote to leave the
