MUSIC: Don't You Know by Kungs ft Jamie N Commons

0:00:020:00:05

Hello, and welcome to marvellous Rio de Janeiro,

0:00:110:00:14

host of the Games of the 31st Olympiad,

0:00:140:00:17

and what an Olympics it's been for Team GB

0:00:170:00:19

and, in particular, for the Scottish athletes.

0:00:190:00:22

Yes, these last two weeks have been our most successful on foreign soil,

0:00:350:00:39

equalling a best ever performance at the Olympics

0:00:390:00:42

for Scottish athletes.

0:00:420:00:43

We've won gold medals in rowing, cycling and tennis.

0:00:430:00:47

In the next 30 minutes, we'll relive the best of the action

0:00:470:00:50

and we'll hear from many of the medallists.

0:00:500:00:53

51 Scottish athletes arrived in Rio as part of Team GB,

0:01:050:01:08

the largest ever Scottish contingent for an away Olympics,

0:01:080:01:12

and hopes were high of a medal tally reaching double figures.

0:01:120:01:15

Well, that target was reached comfortably and more.

0:01:150:01:18

Here at the velodrome, there was great success,

0:01:180:01:20

with Callum Skinner and Katie Archibald

0:01:200:01:23

part of a dominant cycling squad.

0:01:230:01:25

Team GB won the men's team sprint in Beijing and London

0:01:280:01:31

with the now retired Sir Chris Hoy at the heart of the team.

0:01:310:01:34

So there were some big pedals to fill for 22-year-old Callum Skinner,

0:01:340:01:39

selected to race alongside London gold medallists

0:01:390:01:42

Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes.

0:01:420:01:44

Although defending champions, they were 14-1 outsiders

0:01:440:01:48

to retain their title.

0:01:480:01:50

They faced reigning world champions

0:01:500:01:52

and fastest qualifiers New Zealand in the final.

0:01:520:01:55

And Callum Skinner managed to get on.

0:01:550:01:57

He's just beautifully placed to take over.

0:01:570:02:00

As Jason Kenny hands it over

0:02:000:02:02

and Great Britain are in the lead, but only just.

0:02:020:02:04

It's so, so close here.

0:02:040:02:05

It's all going to come down to this last half-lap.

0:02:050:02:07

It's Callum Skinner against Dawkins.

0:02:070:02:09

Who's going to claim the gold medal here in Rio?

0:02:090:02:12

Up towards the line and the gold medal goes to Great Britain.

0:02:120:02:16

The Olympic champions again.

0:02:160:02:18

Callum Skinner brings it home for Britain.

0:02:180:02:21

We were definitely outsiders.

0:02:210:02:23

In previous World Championships,

0:02:230:02:24

we struggled to put the ride together sometimes.

0:02:240:02:27

But, as I say, our squad's just

0:02:270:02:28

aimed towards getting Olympic results,

0:02:280:02:30

and we came away with it,

0:02:300:02:31

and couldn't have done it any better way.

0:02:310:02:33

Olympic record, beating the world champions,

0:02:330:02:35

and a gold medal at the end of it - couldn't be happier.

0:02:350:02:38

Team-mates and roommates became rivals in the individual sprint,

0:02:380:02:42

where Skinner and Kenny battled for gold and silver in the final.

0:02:420:02:46

Jason Kenny at the front.

0:02:480:02:49

Callum Skinner digging deep, trying to claw his way back.

0:02:490:02:53

Into the finishing straight.

0:02:530:02:54

Jason Kenny has got this and Jason Kenny wins the gold medal.

0:02:540:03:00

And a spectacular silver

0:03:000:03:01

after a series of excellent performances from Callum Skinner.

0:03:010:03:05

In his first Olympic Games, he has a gold and now a silver.

0:03:050:03:10

It's far beyond exceeded my expectations.

0:03:100:03:12

I think, you know, coming into these competitions,

0:03:120:03:15

if you'd said, "We'll give you a few more months," I would have taken it

0:03:150:03:18

because we were definitely on the back foot.

0:03:180:03:20

We had our fair share of really disappointing World Championships,

0:03:200:03:23

but we always knew that if the team managed to stay together

0:03:230:03:26

that we'd probably be world-beaters,

0:03:260:03:27

and, luckily, it came together this time.

0:03:270:03:30

After only taking up cycling seriously in 2011,

0:03:300:03:33

Katie Archibald became part of the hugely successful team pursuit squad

0:03:330:03:37

two years later.

0:03:370:03:38

However, her participation in Rio was jeopardised

0:03:380:03:41

by a motorbike crash late last year.

0:03:410:03:44

She recovered just in time and lined up alongside Laura Trott,

0:03:440:03:47

Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell-Shand.

0:03:470:03:50

They showed they were the team to beat in qualification.

0:03:500:03:53

Here they come up towards the line.

0:03:530:03:55

Are they laying down a big, big marker?

0:03:550:03:57

They certainly are. It's a world record marker from Great Britain.

0:03:570:04:00

What a stunning start here in the velodrome.

0:04:000:04:03

In the final, they lined up against big rivals and world champions,

0:04:040:04:07

the USA.

0:04:070:04:09

At the 1km mark, advantage, slightly, to the United States.

0:04:110:04:16

And now Great Britain are starting to turn the screw here.

0:04:290:04:33

Now the pressure is being put on the Americans in this final.

0:04:330:04:37

The final lap of the Olympic final

0:04:370:04:39

and it is going to be a ride to glory here for Great Britain.

0:04:390:04:43

Up towards the line.

0:04:430:04:44

Gold for Great Britain.

0:04:440:04:46

They've smashed the world record.

0:04:460:04:49

Yeah, I had a sneaky look at the end to see that we were there,

0:05:050:05:08

and once you get that sort of, like,

0:05:080:05:10

yeah, chomping on the bit kind of sensation,

0:05:100:05:13

yeah, we felt like superheroes, I suppose.

0:05:130:05:15

Katie Archibald!

0:05:160:05:18

Got home really late last night and Jo's light was on in her room,

0:05:180:05:21

and I got in, and she's lying with the lights on,

0:05:210:05:23

just her medal next to her in bed!

0:05:230:05:26

And, um... Yeah, I thought, "That's how I feel.

0:05:260:05:28

"I'm going to go do that in private."

0:05:280:05:30

Yeah, it's... Yeah, it's still surreal.

0:05:300:05:33

The Lagoa rowing venue could scarcely be more scenic,

0:05:340:05:37

but would it be the perfect backdrop

0:05:370:05:39

for two Scottish gold medallists from London 2012,

0:05:390:05:42

Heather Stanning and Katherine Grainger.

0:05:420:05:45

Grainger took two years away from the sport

0:05:450:05:47

and struggled in the build-up to these Olympics.

0:05:470:05:50

But would there be a fairy-tale ending?

0:05:500:05:52

Everything that's gone before is now irrelevant

0:05:560:05:59

for the British double scull.

0:05:590:06:00

Both Vicky and I said the day before,

0:06:000:06:02

"We do believe there is something very special we can do.

0:06:020:06:05

"We just need to make sure it comes on the Olympic final day."

0:06:050:06:08

Earlier in the season, who would have said

0:06:080:06:09

that the British double scull of Thornley and Grainger

0:06:090:06:12

would position themselves in a fight for the gold medal here?

0:06:120:06:14

There's nothing more we could have done.

0:06:140:06:16

We had this incredible race.

0:06:160:06:18

It was the best race we could have ever put together.

0:06:180:06:20

Here come Poland. Poland getting Olympic gold.

0:06:200:06:23

Great Britain's Thornley and Grainger

0:06:230:06:26

getting the silver medal today.

0:06:260:06:28

They have come from nowhere this season

0:06:280:06:31

and they are going away Olympic silver medallists.

0:06:310:06:35

It wasn't quite enough to win,

0:06:350:06:36

but it was the way we wanted to go out.

0:06:360:06:39

You bring everything to that moment

0:06:390:06:41

and we took it on and we led the field, we did everything we could,

0:06:410:06:44

and then we got the silver for it.

0:06:440:06:45

What a team through this regatta.

0:06:450:06:47

It's a nice feeling of contentedness

0:06:470:06:49

underneath everything else that goes on,

0:06:490:06:51

and then I've been lucky enough that, every single Games,

0:06:510:06:54

I've come back with some sort of chunk of metal.

0:06:540:06:56

It's something I'm immensely proud of,

0:06:560:06:58

but I think it takes you going home

0:06:580:07:00

and sitting on your sofa at home with a cup of tea

0:07:000:07:03

and just think, "That's that. That's what I did."

0:07:030:07:06

Defending Olympic champions, Glover and Stanning.

0:07:070:07:11

By the 1,000m mark, we realised we had a really decent lead

0:07:110:07:14

and probably were surprised by how much of a lead we had.

0:07:140:07:16

But their position is well and truly dominating here.

0:07:160:07:20

Great Britain, Glover and Stanning,

0:07:200:07:21

they look back at the Olympic final...

0:07:210:07:24

We had a fantastic third 500, which meant that we, you know,

0:07:240:07:27

we just stayed in that dominating position,

0:07:270:07:29

so when it came to the last 500,

0:07:290:07:31

it was all about just not messing up.

0:07:310:07:33

Great Britain's Glover and Stanning defend their Olympic title,

0:07:330:07:37

and they have done it in such style.

0:07:370:07:40

It's carnival time here.

0:07:400:07:41

Just really pleased to have something to go home

0:07:410:07:44

and show everyone who's helped us,

0:07:440:07:46

and have something for Robin, who's coached us.

0:07:460:07:48

I mean, he gets nothing. The coach doesn't get any recognition.

0:07:480:07:51

They don't get a medal.

0:07:510:07:52

Four years of the most amazing performances.

0:07:520:07:56

To come away with one is amazing, but to actually have two,

0:07:560:07:58

it just shows that it's not chance, what you've done.

0:07:580:08:02

It's... yeah, all the training's worth it.

0:08:020:08:04

And I know not everyone gets to come away with anything,

0:08:040:08:07

but I think just competing...

0:08:070:08:09

It is phenomenal to be an Olympian and to race,

0:08:090:08:12

but it's so special to actually come away with a medal.

0:08:120:08:15

Great Britain are going to go into the record books here with a medal

0:08:150:08:18

and it's looking like it's going to be a silver.

0:08:180:08:21

Hang on there, girls!

0:08:210:08:23

They have absolutely done it.

0:08:230:08:25

And there were two more Scots

0:08:260:08:28

who picked up rowing medals for Team GB -

0:08:280:08:30

Karen Bennett and Polly Swann

0:08:300:08:32

winning silver in the women's eight.

0:08:320:08:35

A first ever medal in the big boat for the British women.

0:08:350:08:38

It was incredible

0:08:390:08:41

and just...

0:08:410:08:43

Yeah, these girls are strong,

0:08:430:08:44

they're sassy, they're inspirational,

0:08:440:08:46

and I'm so happy to be here with them.

0:08:460:08:48

The Olympic tennis tournament four years ago

0:08:490:08:52

is where Andy Murray's career really took off.

0:08:520:08:55

Gold in London was followed by his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open

0:08:550:09:00

and he came into this tournament here as Wimbledon champion.

0:09:000:09:03

He also led the team proudly into these Olympics as flag bearer

0:09:030:09:08

and there was also the small matter

0:09:080:09:10

of a doubles competition with big brother Jamie.

0:09:100:09:13

The opening ceremony allowed Andy Murray

0:09:150:09:17

to tick another one off his career bucket list

0:09:170:09:20

and he conserved some strength for the challenge ahead

0:09:200:09:23

by carrying that flag with his left hand.

0:09:230:09:26

On the court, he began where he left off at Wimbledon,

0:09:270:09:31

easing past Viktor Troicki and Juan Monaco in straight sets.

0:09:310:09:35

But there was a shock defeat for the Murray brothers

0:09:350:09:38

in the opening round of the doubles,

0:09:380:09:40

losing to home pair Sa and Bellucci after an epic third set tie-break.

0:09:400:09:45

There was also a first-round doubles defeat for Colin Fleming

0:09:450:09:48

alongside Dom Inglot.

0:09:480:09:51

Andy Murray faced Fabio Fognini in the singles third round

0:09:510:09:55

and looked to be cruising after taking the first set 6-1.

0:09:550:09:58

But the Italian fought back, winning eight games in a row,

0:09:580:10:02

to take the second set and lead 3-0 in the third.

0:10:020:10:05

But Murray's resilience told in the end,

0:10:050:10:08

turning the match around with a six-game winning streak of his own

0:10:080:10:12

to reach the quarterfinals.

0:10:120:10:14

That match followed a similar pattern,

0:10:140:10:16

as Murray breezed through the first set against Steve Johnson 6-0.

0:10:160:10:20

But the big American hit back to take the second

0:10:200:10:23

and go a break up, before Murray rallied to force a tie-break.

0:10:230:10:27

Again, Murray's class told as he took the tie-break 7-2.

0:10:270:10:32

Finally. What a match.

0:10:320:10:34

It's like two different tournaments this has been for Andy Murray.

0:10:340:10:38

After the rollercoaster of the previous two rounds,

0:10:400:10:43

Murray had a much easier ride against Kei Nishikori

0:10:430:10:46

in the semifinals.

0:10:460:10:48

In the final, he faced the conqueror of both Nadal and Djokovic,

0:10:480:10:52

Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro,

0:10:520:10:54

in what was to be a classic Olympic final

0:10:540:10:57

in front of a passionate crowd.

0:10:570:10:59

And Andy Murray does get the break in this Olympic tennis final.

0:11:010:11:06

Into the net comes del Potro. Andy Murray passes him!

0:11:060:11:09

First set, Andy Murray, 7-5.

0:11:090:11:12

Del Potro goes down the line for the winner

0:11:140:11:16

and del Potro is not giving up on his hope of a gold medal here,

0:11:160:11:20

not for one second.

0:11:200:11:22

Goes for the big forehand and this time he nails it.

0:11:230:11:26

Juan Martin del Potro levels things up.

0:11:260:11:29

Great serve from del Potro.

0:11:300:11:32

Andy Murray gets the ball back, makes del Potro play.

0:11:320:11:34

Chance for Andy Murray to pass.

0:11:340:11:35

And a big cry of, "Yes!" from Andy Murray.

0:11:350:11:38

It's an outright winner on the forehand side from Andy Murray.

0:11:400:11:42

Two hours and 50 minutes. He has the third set.

0:11:420:11:45

To the del Potro backhand. He goes for the drop shot.

0:11:470:11:49

It looks good. It's brilliant from Andy Murray.

0:11:490:11:51

He has retrieved the break with a wonderful piece of tennis skill.

0:11:510:11:56

What a rally this is.

0:11:560:11:57

Huge forehand from del Potro. Murray is there.

0:11:570:12:00

In he comes towards the net. Del Potro's at the net.

0:12:000:12:02

Andy Murray...wins the point. What a point!

0:12:020:12:05

It was the point worthy of an Olympic champion

0:12:050:12:08

and I wonder if Juan Martin del Potro knows it.

0:12:080:12:11

Andy Murray makes del Potro work. He's coming into the net.

0:12:110:12:14

It won't get there. Game, set, match, Andy Murray.

0:12:140:12:19

Once again Olympic champion.

0:12:190:12:21

In London 2012, Olympic champion.

0:12:210:12:24

Rio 2016, absolutely amazing.

0:12:240:12:28

I'm very proud to have done it.

0:12:300:12:32

It was... yeah, a brutal match, obviously.

0:12:320:12:34

You know, four...four hours or so,

0:12:340:12:37

and a lot of ups and downs as well.

0:12:370:12:40

It's been a great few months for me.

0:12:400:12:42

I'm very happy with how my tennis is going, obviously.

0:12:420:12:45

I'm glad to have won another gold medal.

0:12:450:12:48

Obviously, a lot of the Argentinians were here supporting,

0:12:500:12:53

and then there was, you know, a bunch of Brits in the crowd,

0:12:530:12:56

and the Brazilians were, you know, supporting me,

0:12:560:12:59

so it was very...very split and...

0:12:590:13:02

Yeah, I think... I mean, I don't know what it was like to watch,

0:13:020:13:06

but it felt like at the end...

0:13:060:13:07

I mean, some of the points and the games

0:13:070:13:10

were really, really good, high quality,

0:13:100:13:12

and it was fitting, I think, for an Olympics final.

0:13:120:13:16

After great success at the World Championships,

0:13:160:13:19

the Team GB swimming squad travelled to Rio with plenty of confidence.

0:13:190:13:24

At the heart of that squad,

0:13:240:13:26

a quartet of Stirling University-based swimmers,

0:13:260:13:29

all hoping to emulate Michael Jamieson's success at London 2012.

0:13:290:13:33

Amid all the glory of London,

0:13:360:13:38

the swimming was seen as a rare disappointment for Team GB,

0:13:380:13:41

with Jamieson and Becky Adlington the only medallists.

0:13:410:13:44

This time out, the relays brought a number of realistic medal chances.

0:13:440:13:48

There was an all-Scottish line-up in the men's 4x200m freestyle heat.

0:13:480:13:52

Robbie Renwick was replaced by James Guy in the final,

0:13:520:13:56

in which they faced a strong USA team

0:13:560:13:58

featuring Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps.

0:13:580:14:01

But a great turn from James Guy and we can get the silver medal here.

0:14:030:14:07

Come on, James Guy.

0:14:070:14:08

It's gold to the USA at the moment, but Great Britain's James Guy

0:14:080:14:11

bringing Team Great Britain into the silver medal position just about.

0:14:110:14:15

A wonderful battle going on there with the Japanese up in 2.

0:14:150:14:19

It's USA going to win it.

0:14:190:14:20

I think Great Britain are going to get the silver.

0:14:200:14:23

But coming back are the Japanese, right inside this last ten metres,

0:14:230:14:26

Can we get silver?

0:14:260:14:27

Gold to USA,

0:14:270:14:28

silver to Great Britain

0:14:280:14:30

and bronze to Japan,

0:14:300:14:31

and what a fabulous team effort that was.

0:14:310:14:34

It was like a dream come true

0:14:340:14:35

to come here to my first Olympics and get a medal,

0:14:350:14:38

and it's great to be with these guys as well, to smash it up.

0:14:380:14:41

To win an Olympic medal is, you know, a dream of mine,

0:14:410:14:44

and now that I've got one, I kind of want more,

0:14:440:14:46

so I think get back in the pool and train for the next four years.

0:14:460:14:50

Duncan Scott!

0:14:500:14:52

What a Games for 19-year-old Duncan Scott.

0:14:520:14:56

He broke the British record on the way to a fifth place finish

0:14:560:14:59

in the blue riband 100m freestyle final

0:14:590:15:02

and then won his second silver of the Games in the medley relay,

0:15:020:15:07

anchoring the team home behind that man Phelps.

0:15:070:15:10

Went better than I could have planned, really.

0:15:100:15:12

I mean, it's just gone to the perfect...

0:15:120:15:14

I was sitting down with Steve Tigg a couple weeks ago,

0:15:140:15:17

going, "So if this happens, you'll be in the final of the 100 free,

0:15:170:15:20

"you'll have a morning off."

0:15:200:15:21

I'm, like, "Yeah, that's probably not going to happen."

0:15:210:15:24

But, yeah, it's all just gone to plan, it's all just been perfect,

0:15:240:15:27

so, yeah, the stars have been aligned.

0:15:270:15:30

It only happens a couple of times in your career.

0:15:300:15:32

So, yeah, just got to take it as it is.

0:15:320:15:35

Competing in her third Olympics,

0:15:360:15:38

Hannah Miley went into the 400m individual medley

0:15:380:15:42

as Commonwealth champion

0:15:420:15:44

and with a genuine chance of a first Olympic medal.

0:15:440:15:46

She qualified fourth fastest for the final,

0:15:460:15:49

where Hungarian superstar Katinka Hosszu was the hot favourite.

0:15:490:15:53

But look at the battle for bronze.

0:15:540:15:56

It's gold, it's world record, for Hosszu.

0:15:560:15:58

It's silver in lane 3 to Dirado.

0:15:580:16:01

Oh, and the bronze has just gone to Belmonte on the touch.

0:16:010:16:04

Oh, my goodness me, that was so close for Hannah Miley.

0:16:040:16:07

Miley's got fourth. Very, very brave swim indeed. 4.32 from her.

0:16:070:16:11

I had my head down, I could see her,

0:16:110:16:14

and I knew she was coming back at me, and I had nothing left.

0:16:140:16:16

I gave that everything I had.

0:16:160:16:18

It's just such a mixture of emotions

0:16:180:16:20

cos I'm so happy with the fact

0:16:200:16:22

that I've actually gone faster than what I did in the heats,

0:16:220:16:25

so much better than what I did in London,

0:16:250:16:27

but it's just hard because it was just so close.

0:16:270:16:29

I was so close to getting it

0:16:290:16:32

and, yeah, it's just kind of...

0:16:320:16:34

happy and kind of disappointment all coming together,

0:16:340:16:37

and this is what I... this is what you're getting, so...

0:16:370:16:41

You have to go back to 1988

0:16:410:16:42

for the last time a Scottish track and field athlete

0:16:420:16:45

won an individual Olympic medal.

0:16:450:16:48

This time around in Rio,

0:16:480:16:49

there was an amazing 15 Scots' names in the GB athletics team.

0:16:490:16:53

The likes of Laura Muir, the new British record holder over 1,500m,

0:16:530:16:58

and Eilidh Doyle, the 400m hurdler, were among our main medal hopes.

0:16:580:17:03

After a strong season, including a new personal best set during

0:17:050:17:09

a Diamond League win in June,

0:17:090:17:11

Eilidh Doyle entered her second Olympic Games with realistic medal

0:17:110:17:15

hopes in both the 400 metres hurdles and the 4x400 metre relay.

0:17:150:17:20

She made the final of the hurdles but finished in eighth place,

0:17:200:17:24

behind winner Dalilah Muhammad.

0:17:240:17:25

As part of a relay squad with Anyika Anoura, Emily Diamond

0:17:270:17:30

and Christine Ohuruogu, they progressed to the final to battle

0:17:300:17:34

for a medal behind the dominant American and Jamaican teams.

0:17:340:17:38

STARTING PISTOL

0:17:380:17:40

So Eilidh Doyle takes Great Britain away.

0:17:400:17:43

Eilidh Doyle doing a great job here. USA, Jamaica, very tight for third.

0:17:430:17:48

And Emily Diamond is waiting, but it will be Canada in front and

0:17:480:17:51

Poland, and then Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

0:17:510:17:54

Emily Diamond now has a bit to do.

0:17:540:17:56

This is a brilliant run from Emily Diamond.

0:17:570:18:00

USA lead, Jamaica second, Great Britain in third.

0:18:000:18:03

Christine Ohuruogu has got the baton.

0:18:030:18:05

The United States coming home.

0:18:060:18:08

It's Allyson Felix, the wonderful, brilliant Allyson Felix.

0:18:080:18:11

Going for gold, going to win gold.

0:18:110:18:13

Jamaica with the silver and, behind them,

0:18:130:18:16

Ohuruogu is holding on, holding on, holding on to take the bronze

0:18:160:18:20

for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

0:18:200:18:23

That is the best they could have expected,

0:18:230:18:25

the best they could have hoped for. They have achieved it in some style.

0:18:250:18:30

I think it is a mixture of relief and absolute joy.

0:18:300:18:33

We knew we were capable of doing it, but you never know what is

0:18:330:18:35

going to happen, so it is the relief of it happening.

0:18:350:18:38

But then the actual joy that you can then just go and enjoy the

0:18:380:18:41

moment, do your lap of honour, have your presentation.

0:18:410:18:43

You can really take it all in.

0:18:430:18:45

I have been lucky enough to have World medals and

0:18:450:18:47

Commonwealth and Europeans and, you know,

0:18:470:18:49

I wanted to get the final one to go in the set.

0:18:490:18:51

I am absolutely delighted.

0:18:510:18:53

Like I said, that is the one you dream of when you're younger and

0:18:530:18:56

you start taking part in sport, especially an athletics.

0:18:560:18:58

The Olympics is the absolute pinnacle of our sport.

0:18:580:19:01

Us Scots are very patriotic, so it's nice to be in that

0:19:010:19:04

group that have done so well. It is just great.

0:19:040:19:07

There is a lot of morale in the team and everybody is just

0:19:070:19:10

supporting each other, and it's great to be part of it.

0:19:100:19:12

I think that's why we have had so much success -

0:19:120:19:14

because everybody is driving up everybody else's performances.

0:19:140:19:17

Laura Muir arrived in Rio in the form of her life,

0:19:190:19:22

after breaking the British record over the 1,500 metres last month -

0:19:220:19:26

a record set by Kelly Holmes while winning gold in Athens.

0:19:260:19:31

So with the second fastest time in the world this year,

0:19:310:19:34

Muir was looking for a medal.

0:19:340:19:36

She ran bravely in the final,

0:19:360:19:37

taking on the Africans at the front in pursuit of gold,

0:19:370:19:41

but faded down the home straight to finish seventh.

0:19:410:19:44

I went for it. It's not every day you find yourself

0:19:460:19:48

in an Olympic final, so I know I was in great shape to do everything.

0:19:480:19:51

The last 150 wasn't quite in me, but the girls had a better race

0:19:510:19:56

on the day, but I gave my absolute everything.

0:19:560:19:58

I am really proud of how I have run.

0:19:580:20:00

There were a number of other Scottish finalists on the track.

0:20:010:20:04

Lynsey Sharp set a new national record in finishing sixth in

0:20:040:20:07

the 800m,

0:20:070:20:09

behind Caster Semenya.

0:20:090:20:10

And just 30 minutes later,

0:20:140:20:15

Andrew Butchart also established a new national best

0:20:150:20:19

over 5,000m, finishing sixth as Mo Farah made history.

0:20:190:20:23

Chelimo is trying but he is not going to get him.

0:20:230:20:25

Mo Farah has gone. He's away.

0:20:250:20:28

Mo Farah is going to get gold for Great Britain again.

0:20:290:20:33

The double double.

0:20:330:20:34

Four Olympic titles, as Butchart runs a great race.

0:20:360:20:40

Eilish McColgan also made her first Olympic final,

0:20:410:20:44

coming home 13th in the women's 5,000m.

0:20:440:20:47

And, in his first Olympic Games, Callum Hawkins finished a hugely

0:20:490:20:53

impressive ninth in the men's marathon.

0:20:530:20:55

Several Scots here have plenty of Olympic experience,

0:20:570:21:00

in particular Aberdeen's David Florence.

0:21:000:21:03

The canoeist got silver in Beijing in 2008,

0:21:030:21:06

another silver at London 2012.

0:21:060:21:09

Could he use these Olympic rings as inspiration as

0:21:090:21:12

he tried to upgrade to gold here in Rio?

0:21:120:21:14

Florence entered the Games as world champion

0:21:160:21:19

in the individual C1 category.

0:21:190:21:21

Having travelled regularly to the Whitewater Stadium in the

0:21:210:21:24

build-up, he progressed smoothly to the final,

0:21:240:21:27

not even requiring his second qualification run.

0:21:270:21:30

However, things did not go to plan in the final.

0:21:300:21:33

Florence making a number of mistakes on his run,

0:21:330:21:36

seeing him finish a hugely disappointing last.

0:21:360:21:39

A devastating result for the 33-year-old,

0:21:390:21:42

but he had little time to dwell on it.

0:21:420:21:44

Just two days later, he was back on the water

0:21:440:21:47

with team-mate Richard Hounslow in the C2 class,

0:21:470:21:50

looking to go one better than the silver medal they won in London.

0:21:500:21:54

This is the moment of truth for Great Britain.

0:21:540:21:57

Are they going to add to the gold taken by Joe Clarke yesterday?

0:21:570:22:00

Not quite.

0:22:000:22:01

They go 0.43 outside, but it was a wonderful effort from

0:22:010:22:06

David Florence, Richard Hounslow.

0:22:060:22:08

They are into the silver medal position,

0:22:080:22:11

which is exactly where they were in London in 2012.

0:22:110:22:14

In our sport, to have gone to three consecutive Olympics and got

0:22:140:22:17

a medal every time is something that is very hard to do.

0:22:170:22:20

I am very proud of that.

0:22:200:22:22

To have come here and won gold would have been absolutely unbelievable.

0:22:220:22:26

But to have come here and not won any medal,

0:22:260:22:28

I would really have felt I should have done better than that,

0:22:280:22:32

so I'm really pleased to be on the podium today.

0:22:320:22:35

Rugby sevens made its debut as an Olympic sport in Rio and two

0:22:370:22:41

Scots, Mark Bennett and Mark Robertson, featured in the squad.

0:22:410:22:45

It was three wins out of three in the group stages for Team GB,

0:22:450:22:48

including an impressive 21-19 victory over New Zealand.

0:22:480:22:51

The Scotsman with the kick ahead.

0:22:520:22:54

The bounce needs to be good. He pauses. He dances.

0:22:540:22:58

Great Britain take the lead through Mark Bennett.

0:22:580:23:00

They then faced Argentina in a very tight quarterfinal that

0:23:020:23:05

went to extra time.

0:23:050:23:08

On the outside. Norton outside him...

0:23:080:23:10

CHEERING

0:23:100:23:12

The try that puts Great Britain into the semifinals.

0:23:130:23:18

It was second seeds South Africa in the semis for the chance

0:23:180:23:22

to play for gold.

0:23:220:23:23

One-on-one. Norton eases past Dylan Sage. Great Britain's first try.

0:23:230:23:29

In the final, they met pretournament favourites Fiji.

0:23:300:23:34

Kolinisau, the captain of Fiji, scores the first try.

0:23:360:23:39

The sevens specialists proved too strong for Team GB, running

0:23:400:23:44

in five unanswered first-half tries on the way to a 43-7 victory.

0:23:440:23:48

The gold a first ever Olympic medal for Fiji,

0:23:510:23:54

a huge moment for the Pacific Islanders.

0:23:540:23:57

Silver, though, a fine reward for Bennett and Robertson and the GB

0:23:580:24:02

team only put together in late May.

0:24:020:24:04

There was also a medal in judo for 29-year-old Sally Conway,

0:24:100:24:13

who battled her way to bronze in the under-70kg category.

0:24:130:24:17

An ippon awarded for Sally Conway.

0:24:190:24:21

An Olympic semifinal awaits Britain's Sally Conway.

0:24:230:24:26

A third ippon in a row.

0:24:260:24:28

All of the girls I fought on 10th August, I'd either never

0:24:300:24:33

beaten before or they've beaten me more times than I've beaten them.

0:24:330:24:37

So I had my work cut out for me that day and I knew, if I was going

0:24:370:24:40

to beat these girls, I would have to put in my best performance.

0:24:400:24:43

I'm so happy I was able to do that.

0:24:430:24:45

To eventually reach my dream of becoming an Olympic medallist is

0:24:450:24:49

just like a dream come true.

0:24:490:24:50

Starting to sink in a bit more now and I just have to sometimes

0:24:500:24:53

keep reminding myself, "You've got an Olympic medal."

0:24:530:24:56

The other day I hadn't seen it for the whole day and I was like,

0:24:560:24:58

"Oh, I'll just have a little peeky look!"

0:24:580:25:00

If it wasn't for everybody in Judo Scotland, British Judo

0:25:020:25:05

that helped me prepare for this medal and kind of always

0:25:050:25:08

believed and supported me,

0:25:080:25:09

then I wouldn't be sat here today with this round my neck.

0:25:090:25:13

Sally's medal one of 13 won by Scots at Rio 2016 -

0:25:130:25:18

four gold, seven silver and two bronze - a truly fantastic return.

0:25:180:25:23

And the man tasked with looking after the elite of Scottish sport

0:25:230:25:27

firmly believes there is more to come.

0:25:270:25:29

They are now using the line, I believe,

0:25:290:25:31

that we are a superpower of sport.

0:25:310:25:34

And, from our perspective, this is Scotland punching above its weight.

0:25:340:25:38

Our contribution towards this has been massive.

0:25:380:25:41

We've achieved, I think, the best ever number of medals,

0:25:410:25:44

not only at away Games, we've equalled London, with 13.

0:25:440:25:48

16 medallists, the widest number of sports that we've ever won from,

0:25:480:25:53

which is fantastic.

0:25:530:25:55

If you calculate it, seven of those 13 medals were from female

0:25:550:25:59

athletes and that's another first as well.

0:25:590:26:01

Although, you know, medals are important,

0:26:010:26:03

I think there is some other really important stories.

0:26:030:26:06

Look at someone like Andrew Butchart, a lovely story here.

0:26:060:26:08

Who would have thought he would have made the team?

0:26:080:26:11

Who would have thought he would have got to the final?

0:26:110:26:13

And who would have thought he would end up in top six as well?

0:26:130:26:16

It just shows, those youngsters training back in Stirling or

0:26:160:26:20

wherever, Glasgow or Edinburgh, can aspire to this level

0:26:200:26:25

and can deliver.

0:26:250:26:26

Already people are talking about, what are we going to do in Tokyo?

0:26:290:26:32

Maybe we need a period of consolidation.

0:26:320:26:35

Certainly, in Scotland, I think what we'd like to do is look at the

0:26:350:26:39

reviews, look at the performance behind the performances and

0:26:390:26:42

not ignore other important sports that are going on as well.

0:26:420:26:46

Andy Murray leads out Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

0:26:460:26:49

Of those 51 Scots that made Team GB, almost 50% are based in

0:26:490:26:54

Scotland, training in Scotland with our support and our investment,

0:26:540:26:58

and some of those medals were home-grown. Look at our swimmers.

0:26:580:27:01

These are guys that are based in Scotland,

0:27:010:27:03

train in Scotland at our world-class facilities.

0:27:030:27:06

I think that is a strong message to prove that we have a system,

0:27:060:27:10

we don't have to send athletes down south, we can look after them.

0:27:100:27:14

But all credit to the athletes and well done, Scottish Swimming.

0:27:140:27:17

As the Rio Olympics come to an end,

0:27:200:27:22

the sport largely became the main focus.

0:27:220:27:25

Many of the pre-Games issues and potential problems

0:27:250:27:28

faded into the background.

0:27:280:27:30

Team GB topped the tally from London four years ago to celebrate

0:27:300:27:34

its best overseas Games.

0:27:340:27:36

13 of the 67 medals won came from Scots,

0:27:360:27:40

equalling their best ever performance at the Olympics.

0:27:400:27:43

Yes, it's fair to say that Scottish athletes making the GB team

0:27:430:27:46

in four years' time for the next Summer Olympics in Tokyo have

0:27:460:27:50

a lot to live up to.

0:27:500:27:52

Thank you very much for watching, we hope you enjoyed the programme.

0:27:520:27:55

Bye-bye for now.

0:27:550:27:56

# Stand on up and take a bow

0:27:580:28:01

# There's something there and it's showing

0:28:010:28:04

# There's no need to look around

0:28:040:28:06

# You're the best we got going

0:28:060:28:09

# Shout out to the dreams you'll chase
