Welcome to highlights of the 14th Great Manchester Run, once again

:00:54.:00:58.

that streets will be graced by some of the world didn't best runners on

:00:59.:01:01.

the most enthusiastic amateurs. Foremost they are not running to

:01:02.:01:03.

win, they are running for a reason. I always feel that anything is

:01:04.:01:19.

possible when I go out for a run and when I do my racing it is the little

:01:20.:01:21.

achievement that counts for me. I just went to the gym one day and

:01:22.:01:33.

realised I am enjoying this, slowly I started to see progress, my heart

:01:34.:01:39.

rate dropping off, my jeans size getting law on my T-shirt size

:01:40.:01:42.

dropping off and I was 8.5 stones lighter. Running has helped me

:01:43.:01:49.

mentally through some tough times, the world has been on my shoulders,

:01:50.:01:54.

over the last few years I have gone through depression and stress and

:01:55.:01:59.

anxiety, if I didn't have running, I don't think I would be here today.

:02:00.:02:05.

The best advice I can give, really, if you are out there running,

:02:06.:02:10.

however slow or fast it is, you are running faster than the person sat

:02:11.:02:14.

on the couch, put your shoes on, get out there and run.

:02:15.:02:22.

Now we will tell you what is coming up, so much to look forward to.

:02:23.:02:29.

There is no doubt that Manchester is one of the hot heads of sport in the

:02:30.:02:33.

UK and this weekend certainly encapsulates that. From the games on

:02:34.:02:40.

Friday night through to the next generation taking part in the mini

:02:41.:02:44.

run at the Etihad Stadium. Anthony Crolla will be running again this

:02:45.:02:48.

year and he has recruited an army to do it with him, couldn't as for

:02:49.:02:52.

anyone better to motivate them. So money on taking to the streets this

:02:53.:02:55.

morning and into this afternoon and so money emotional and inspirational

:02:56.:03:00.

stories to tell about why they have chosen to take on a challenge of

:03:01.:03:07.

running 10,000 metres. And six Olympic gold medals between them, it

:03:08.:03:10.

only begins to tell the story of the brilliant Ethiopian jewel of Dibaba

:03:11.:03:17.

and Bekele. They head up the elite field. It is also a day tinged with

:03:18.:03:23.

sadness because a great friend and supporter of the Great Manchester

:03:24.:03:26.

Run is no longer with us, I'm sure you all remember Kirsty at the

:03:27.:03:31.

Commonwealth Games in 2002 when she and David Beckham presented the

:03:32.:03:36.

Jubilee batted to the Queen, Kirsty with the 20 kilograms oxygen tank

:03:37.:03:39.

she needed because of the incredibly rare illness and has been part of

:03:40.:03:44.

the run since the beginning in 2003, the Finder medical odds to live as

:03:45.:03:47.

long as she did on raising many millions of pounds in the process.

:03:48.:03:49.

long as she did on raising many Alongside me as one of her sisters

:03:50.:03:55.

and Phil Taylor, part of the charity. Incredibly sad that Kirsty

:03:56.:04:00.

is not here, she has been a big part of the Great Manchester Run, just

:04:01.:04:02.

tell me how proud you are of the Great Manchester Run, just

:04:03.:04:07.

sister and what she achieved? Words cannot put in how proud

:04:08.:04:09.

sister and what she achieved? Words done this run twice before and

:04:10.:04:11.

sister and what she achieved? Words year I say I will never do it again

:04:12.:04:14.

and this year is the third time round. Now she cannot do it herself,

:04:15.:04:17.

I feel like I have to step up because she did so much, I need to

:04:18.:04:23.

take her place and do it for her. She was so selfless with all the

:04:24.:04:27.

challenges she had in her life to focus all much on doing good for

:04:28.:04:32.

others was inspirational. Definitely and you never once mourned, when she

:04:33.:04:35.

didn't feel too great she just got on with it and took thing she had so

:04:36.:04:41.

much going on and she never mourned and I want to race for her. Wood

:04:42.:04:46.

tell us about the charity and the money that Kirsty raised? The

:04:47.:04:51.

charity first started with the Kirsty appeal which raised ?5

:04:52.:04:56.

million to secure the hospice. We reached the ?5 million in

:04:57.:05:02.

million to secure the hospice. We 2006 and we launched another

:05:03.:05:06.

campaign to raise ?3.5 million to build France's Lodge, which is the

:05:07.:05:13.

juvenile section. We have built that and the Kirsty club is raising funds

:05:14.:05:22.

to help France's's has because it costs ?4 million per year to run it

:05:23.:05:27.

annually. We saw David Beckham and this is a message that David sent.

:05:28.:05:33.

It is amazing what she achieved and I guess when she was born and just

:05:34.:05:39.

growing up and all the challenges she had, but she thought she wasn't

:05:40.:05:42.

going to survive beyond four. She has achieved a lot in the short time

:05:43.:05:47.

she is here, than what has achieved a lot in the short time

:05:48.:05:51.

lifetime of 100 years could have achieved, received numerous awards,

:05:52.:05:55.

raised millions of pounds for charity and all for the benefit of

:05:56.:05:57.

others as well as our self and charity and all for the benefit of

:05:58.:06:00.

families benefit from the hard work she has done throughout her life. It

:06:01.:06:05.

will be an emotional day for you, all the best. You will keep the

:06:06.:06:08.

memory of Kirsty burning brightly and thanks for speaking to us. We

:06:09.:06:13.

have got two roving reporters to bring you all the stories, former

:06:14.:06:18.

British sprinter Jeanette, but Phil Jones is on the VIP bus. I am here

:06:19.:06:23.

with one of our great 400-metre runners. Ieuan Thomas, TV presenter.

:06:24.:06:29.

We have seen you on the marathon, the half marathon. It is not too

:06:30.:06:36.

bad, ten K mentally, six and a bit miles as OK, still a long way,

:06:37.:06:41.

people think you can run it. Venus printer, anything over half a mile

:06:42.:06:45.

starts to hurt but if I am sensible and go off at a steady pace, 10,000

:06:46.:06:49.

metres should be OK. You are running with a difference, you have got your

:06:50.:06:53.

phone, selfie stick, what are you doing? Today is a strange one, I

:06:54.:06:57.

will attempt a live broadcast for the whole event on this stick and

:06:58.:07:04.

people can tune in on Periscope and watch me live, watch me go through

:07:05.:07:08.

pain and smiles and hopefully not get slapped on the bottom by loads

:07:09.:07:11.

of people when they overtake me, that's what happens to me, they give

:07:12.:07:17.

me a little friendly pat. People can message you, they are already

:07:18.:07:21.

messaging me what they can write it on the screen and it comes to Jimmy

:07:22.:07:26.

and I just want to grab the essence of Manchester and show people what a

:07:27.:07:29.

great event that is, the crowds are fantastic, at the moment the sun is

:07:30.:07:32.

out which is rare for Manchester. I just want to show people what it is

:07:33.:07:36.

like, a Birds Eye view of doing a great run series, the 10,000 metre

:07:37.:07:42.

race. We will check in with the footage later in the coverage. I am

:07:43.:07:49.

here with Joe Edwards who is taking part in today's Great Manchester

:07:50.:07:52.

Run. These tell us why today isn't so important for you? My husband

:07:53.:08:01.

Chris Edwards was treated at the Christie, was diagnosed with stomach

:08:02.:08:05.

cancer in 2008 and the treatment and care he had from the hospital was

:08:06.:08:10.

fantastic. I actually got pregnant during the time that Chris was ill

:08:11.:08:14.

and had a little boy and I have no doubt that without that he wouldn't

:08:15.:08:20.

be with me here today. Chris lost his battle with stomach cancer in

:08:21.:08:26.

2010 and then I decided to do some fundraising, started off with a wok

:08:27.:08:33.

from our home to Anfield and it snowballed from there. I love the

:08:34.:08:38.

charity and everything about it and I do what I can for them. Thank you

:08:39.:08:43.

so much, good luck today. As always, the organisers here gather some of

:08:44.:08:47.

the world did invest in the elite field and it is no exception.

:08:48.:08:54.

Everyone in the women's feel, triple Olympic champion and twice a winner,

:08:55.:09:07.

Dibaba. Edna Kiplagat was third a year ago. European cross-country

:09:08.:09:13.

champion in 2014, excellent second place last year, the best of

:09:14.:09:18.

British, Gemma Steel. In the men's field, three-time Olympic

:09:19.:09:20.

gold-medallist and champion two years ago, Kenenisa Bekele. One of

:09:21.:09:27.

the world marathon greats was runner-up that they, he is back to

:09:28.:09:33.

renew rivalries, Kenya's Ludik medallist, Wilson Kipsang. --

:09:34.:09:41.

Olympic medallist. To an elite sportsmen, WBA lightweight champion,

:09:42.:09:44.

Anthony Crolla, ran last year and back this time of a whole bunch of

:09:45.:09:48.

guys, you have been mentoring them and calling them Anthony Crolla's

:09:49.:09:49.

army. A great achievement, winning the

:09:50.:09:59.

world title, when you set out to do something from an early age and you

:10:00.:10:06.

have done it after many years. To come back and to achieve that is

:10:07.:10:14.

definitely my greatest achievement. I think the training at times can be

:10:15.:10:21.

very tough. Once you take those boxes in training, in the fight, you

:10:22.:10:26.

know you can overcome a lot of things and likewise in fights, you

:10:27.:10:31.

know how tough it can get, so you know how hard you have to push

:10:32.:10:37.

yourself and training. Running is important, different types of

:10:38.:10:41.

running. But whether it be long distance or bits on the track, it

:10:42.:10:44.

simulates in a fight when you are working hard or building stamina.

:10:45.:10:52.

For them to ask in the army that has been put together, it means an awful

:10:53.:11:00.

lot. Just listening to some of their stories, they are an inspiration to

:11:01.:11:06.

me. I love the city and not many prouder man Clooney and is then me.

:11:07.:11:11.

The way the people get behind their own, you will see that on the day of

:11:12.:11:16.

the race. The city comes out each year to support the race. Talk about

:11:17.:11:21.

these guys and what you have been doing. We have got 12 runners, each

:11:22.:11:27.

representing a boxing round or a boxing fight. And everyone of them,

:11:28.:11:33.

they are raising money for a great cause and we are all at different

:11:34.:11:36.

levels but great getting to know these people and I'm very proud to

:11:37.:11:39.

be doing it with them today. Did you pick great looking crew? It was very

:11:40.:11:44.

tough because we had a lot of entries but I think I have the

:11:45.:11:49.

perfect 12 year. It is not just young athletes, it is people of all

:11:50.:11:53.

ages and all levels and each one of them doing it for different causes

:11:54.:11:57.

and it is something I am very proud to be apart of. You have enjoyed a

:11:58.:12:00.

row, has he been a good motivator? Yes. They had to say that. Have you

:12:01.:12:07.

enjoyed it? To be asked to do it at the Great Manchester Run, this is

:12:08.:12:11.

the best day of the year for Manchester, the way the city comes

:12:12.:12:14.

out and support this run and a lot of great causes, I have really

:12:15.:12:18.

enjoyed it. This time last year, we were talking about your rehab on the

:12:19.:12:22.

horrible incident you had when you try to catch those burglars and you

:12:23.:12:26.

got a head injury, what a year it has been since then, WBA lightweight

:12:27.:12:31.

champion. Here is a reminder of your last factory, you retain your title

:12:32.:12:37.

against Barroso. COMMENTATOR: What a shot that is from Anthony Crolla,

:12:38.:12:45.

the crowd loved what they are seeing. He has sent his men to the

:12:46.:12:51.

floor and account has started! He looks to his corner and he has

:12:52.:12:54.

successfully defended his WBA lightweight title from the man...

:12:55.:13:02.

Sensational stuff from the man from Manchester. It couldn't have gone

:13:03.:13:07.

any better. Last time out winning the title was special, being an

:13:08.:13:14.

underdog again and the challenger, even sweeter

:13:15.:13:16.

underdog again and the challenger, enjoying life but I have

:13:17.:13:19.

underdog again and the challenger, working hard and keep improving.

:13:20.:13:20.

Next fight? I will look working hard and keep improving.

:13:21.:13:25.

sure yet, I should know in the next sure yet, I should know in the next

:13:26.:13:29.

few weeks but hopefully one of the other champions and many more great

:13:30.:13:32.

night in Manchester. Maybe Les Vega 's one-day! Good luck, I will speak

:13:33.:13:41.

to you later. Good afternoon to the commentary team.

:13:42.:13:43.

to you later. Good afternoon to the Paula Radcliffe and Steve Cram. Good

:13:44.:13:48.

morning Jonathan and everybody else. Beautiful day in Manchester, looking

:13:49.:13:51.

forward to some great racing. Chatting with Paula about Tirunesh

:13:52.:13:59.

Dibaba. Took over a year out of racing. I'm sure she will get

:14:00.:14:08.

cheered around the streets, the last time she actually raised was here in

:14:09.:14:13.

Manchester back in 2014. Lovely conditions, we hope for a good race

:14:14.:14:21.

and I guess the question is how fit is Tirunesh Dibaba. Good morning to

:14:22.:14:25.

Paula Radcliffe. Like everybody, you must be delighted to see her bag?

:14:26.:14:35.

It's great to see her back and I'm anticipating seeing the form she is

:14:36.:14:46.

in. She admitted she gained quite a bit of weight and wasn't really

:14:47.:14:50.

running through the final stages of pregnancy, took some time to get

:14:51.:14:54.

back into it. This is her first real test and then she will decide if our

:14:55.:14:58.

main aim is to qualify for Rio, she's got to find the 10,000 metres

:14:59.:15:02.

on the track but this will answer some questions. This will get the

:15:03.:15:05.

competitive juices flowing again. some questions. This will get the

:15:06.:15:12.

They can ease her back into competition. It's not an easy field

:15:13.:15:15.

but it's not like having to run the qualifying time first time out. As

:15:16.:15:19.

they leave the city centre, where the tens of thousands are waiting

:15:20.:15:23.

for their opportunity to get going, they pretty much runway behind where

:15:24.:15:29.

we are in Deansgate and then head out towards the Salford area in this

:15:30.:15:35.

part of the route. Pretty fast, a flat course. Old Trafford always

:15:36.:15:41.

looming in the distance. FA Cup winners last night, it will be a

:15:42.:15:47.

happy place and maybe you saw heads around here today. A little loop

:15:48.:15:53.

around, not far away from the BBC HQ as well, Salford quays, and then

:15:54.:15:57.

back along the same route. At this point a couple of kilometres to go,

:15:58.:16:00.

this is where the race normally breaks up and then up to Dean 's

:16:01.:16:04.

gate, where we are sitting and patiently waiting for them to

:16:05.:16:14.

finish. -- Deansgate. Well, you can see that Tirunesh Dibaba is just

:16:15.:16:17.

trying to force the issue a little bit here. Edna Kiplagat looking

:16:18.:16:25.

reasonably comfortable and the others hanging on. That little group

:16:26.:16:31.

further back includes Gemma Steel but Dibaba is breaking things up and

:16:32.:16:37.

as Paula said, perfect pace if you like, 3.11, 3.11. Identical times

:16:38.:16:46.

for the first two kilometres but now she means business. She does and

:16:47.:16:50.

already starting to forge ahead. She will be enjoying getting back out

:16:51.:17:01.

here. Just being able to appreciate being back racing will give her

:17:02.:17:06.

energy as well. Starting to test the others and ask some questions of

:17:07.:17:09.

them in terms of how fast they are able to go right now. Old Trafford,

:17:10.:17:16.

which is quiet today, it wasn't quiet down at Wembley yesterday.

:17:17.:17:21.

Great day for the club, commiserations to all the Palace

:17:22.:17:30.

fans. The streets around Old Trafford quiet today. Gemma Steel

:17:31.:17:41.

just struggling a bit there, and the Polish athlete 110, and the Italian

:17:42.:17:52.

wearing 108. It's been a difficult period for Gemma Steel. She knew how

:17:53.:18:00.

well some of the other girls were going. They get the leaders, Dibaba

:18:01.:18:10.

is really using, I wouldn't say it is twisting and turning here but a

:18:11.:18:13.

slight downhill section away from the football ground, able to keep

:18:14.:18:16.

stretching out and a little bit behind as they cross the bridge

:18:17.:18:23.

here. The third kilometre they went through in 3.06, which is what did

:18:24.:18:31.

the damage. She has just eased back a bit into her original rhythm and

:18:32.:18:35.

the other two able to hang onto that. Of the three of them, Tirunesh

:18:36.:18:39.

Dibaba really looking in control of this and the one who looks the most

:18:40.:18:43.

comfortable right now. Well, it was the FA Cup final yesterday, a big

:18:44.:18:47.

comfortable right now. Well, it was day for football and a big year for

:18:48.:18:49.

football with the European Championships coming up, all hoping

:18:50.:18:53.

that England will do well and the man who is tasked to make sure that

:18:54.:18:56.

happens is going to be our start today, ease with Phil Jones.

:18:57.:19:00.

Thanks a lot, Steve. Obviously you're talking about the man beside

:19:01.:19:05.

me, Roy Hodgson, the England manager. All about France coming up

:19:06.:19:09.

but today it is all about the big game later on in Manchester but what

:19:10.:19:16.

about this first of all? First of all I'm very happy and honoured to

:19:17.:19:21.

be asked. Since the start of the race it's great to see so many

:19:22.:19:25.

people taking part and I can only hope they will have good weather for

:19:26.:19:29.

the remainder because I'm sure that will help them. You always get a

:19:30.:19:34.

warm welcome here and I'm sure you will get that later on with the

:19:35.:19:38.

England team as the build-up starts in earnest for the Euros. We've had

:19:39.:19:43.

a good few days training at St George's Park that we're looking

:19:44.:19:47.

forward to the game this afternoon, an important one and the first in

:19:48.:19:51.

our three preparation games here. I'm sure that the players and the

:19:52.:19:55.

staff are all very excited about playing at the City of Manchester

:19:56.:20:00.

Stadium. How do you get the sense of the excitement that is building up?

:20:01.:20:04.

The nation goes football crazy when these big championships come around

:20:05.:20:07.

and I'm sure you're being approached all the time about that? Yes I am,

:20:08.:20:12.

but I enjoy that and I think that's very healthy. I'm delighted that the

:20:13.:20:16.

country is excited and I also feel we have a lot of support throughout

:20:17.:20:20.

the country, I think people like the team and liked what the team is

:20:21.:20:24.

trying to do, so we go there with high hopes but we also know that we

:20:25.:20:28.

carried hopes of a nation on our shoulders. Good luck for the Euros

:20:29.:20:33.

and enjoy the occasion today. I shall, thank you very much.

:20:34.:20:38.

Yes, good luck to Roy and the England team. And all the other home

:20:39.:20:44.

nation teams taking part as well. Now, Tirunesh Dibaba has really put

:20:45.:20:54.

other down here, Diane Nukuri is now struggling and a ten metre gap

:20:55.:20:57.

between herself and Edna Kiplagat, who herself is just hanging on to

:20:58.:21:01.

the Ethiopian, who I wouldn't necessarily say is looking like her

:21:02.:21:05.

old self but this will be a real confidence booster for Tirunesh

:21:06.:21:09.

Dibaba, if she can keep forging on here and keep the pace going. When

:21:10.:21:14.

you come back in the first six or seven K, it's when you get into that

:21:15.:21:19.

bit of the race, three K to go, that you realise how fit you are. You can

:21:20.:21:25.

tell you only have one or two to Lahmert is to go. She doesn't look

:21:26.:21:29.

like she's putting has under any undue pressure or any questions she

:21:30.:21:35.

can't answer commission looks very smooth and controlled, a bit of a

:21:36.:21:40.

look over her shoulder there. It is Diane Nukuri who has not been able

:21:41.:21:44.

to go with the front two. We're going to look back a little bit

:21:45.:21:48.

earlier, starting with the wheelchair race, and Andrew Cotter.

:21:49.:21:52.

COMMENTATOR: Jonathan Edwards was there to get them under way and the

:21:53.:22:00.

man out in front at the very start really did dominate things, Simon

:22:01.:22:05.

Lawson. He had a good race with David Weir last year but Weir not

:22:06.:22:09.

racing this year, so Lawson was out on his own for just about the whole

:22:10.:22:14.

race. What a pace he said. In the women's race it was a lot closer,

:22:15.:22:19.

with the offending champion Shelly Woods and Jade Jones. Full Simon

:22:20.:22:24.

Lawson, he was out on his own, it was a quick time and just outside

:22:25.:22:30.

the course record set by David Weir, but he won it for fourth time. A

:22:31.:22:33.

Now we can look forward to the start fourth title as well for

:22:34.:22:41.

Now we can look forward to the start of the men's elite race and the

:22:42.:22:44.

massed ranks of the thousands are going to follow them on this now

:22:45.:22:49.

Good luck, this is Europe's biggest smiles as ever.

:22:50.:22:59.

Good luck, this is Europe's biggest 10k. The Great Manchester Run about

:23:00.:23:06.

to get under way and there we go! The klaxon sounded by the England

:23:07.:23:17.

manager. Many people will cross this start line over the next couple of

:23:18.:23:21.

hours, we can't fit them all on the same route because it is only 10k

:23:22.:23:24.

will start its great to see how this race has grown over the years. Today

:23:25.:23:29.

we expect to see the 300,000th finisher to cross the line in about

:23:30.:23:36.

12.20 five, something like that. Let's go through some of the other

:23:37.:23:42.

names, the elite start list, Robertson, an eight Bierce. Richard

:23:43.:23:51.

Goodman, good to see him having a run out here. -- Arne Gabius.

:23:52.:23:57.

Goodman, good to see him having a keeps looking

:23:58.:23:57.

Goodman, good to see him having a sees is about a five metre gap. She

:23:58.:24:03.

just needs to concentrate on running towards the finish. Not too far to

:24:04.:24:08.

go and the crowds starting to build here. She is moving well since she

:24:09.:24:14.

has picked up her cadence a bit. She's just checking almost every few

:24:15.:24:19.

strides as to what is happening. All she needs to know is that the gap is

:24:20.:24:24.

growing and the race is in the bag now, so she can concentrate on

:24:25.:24:27.

finishing strongly in the last 300 metres or so. They've come around

:24:28.:24:34.

the final bend and it's a bit of an uphill finish here at the Great

:24:35.:24:38.

Manchester Run. It's great to see Tirunesh Dibaba coming back after so

:24:39.:24:42.

long away. The last race was here two years ago and this could be the

:24:43.:24:46.

long away. The last race was here comeback onto the track and then

:24:47.:24:52.

perhaps a return to the sort of form that all her win in London, win in

:24:53.:24:54.

Beijing, taking the Olympic gold that all her win in London, win in

:24:55.:24:57.

medals and it would be fantastic see her back in Rio. Tirunesh Dibaba

:24:58.:25:04.

now into the last 200 metres or so and the crowd getting ready to

:25:05.:25:06.

receive her. and the crowd getting ready to

:25:07.:25:10.

pretty good today and it will give her a bit of an indication. Not

:25:11.:25:13.

until she gets onto the track and really has a go will she find out

:25:14.:25:17.

what sort of shape she is in. But this has been a great return from a

:25:18.:25:20.

good comeback for the three times Olympic champion, Tirunesh Dibaba

:25:21.:25:26.

comes back to win the Great Manchester Run for the third time.

:25:27.:25:31.

We will get the time confirmed officially and if so that is a

:25:32.:25:35.

pretty good return for Dibaba. Kiplagat did pretty well to hang on

:25:36.:25:39.

for so long but as ever she was never going to really be able to

:25:40.:25:42.

content with Dibaba's speed in the final stages. And Nukuri, another

:25:43.:25:48.

good solid performance from her. Expect to see her running for

:25:49.:25:52.

Burundi at the Olympic Games. She will take third spot. And under 32

:25:53.:25:59.

minutes, so a good performance from her, Nukuri, but a fair way behind.

:26:00.:26:08.

Gemma Steel, watching the clock as she comes up the home straight. She

:26:09.:26:12.

will be the first of the British athletes to cross the line. It's

:26:13.:26:17.

going to be under 33 minutes, that's an improvement from what we've seen

:26:18.:26:21.

so far this year from Gemma Steel. 32.40 three. Well, the men have gone

:26:22.:26:28.

through the first kilometre in about 2.40 five. A steady enough pace for

:26:29.:26:33.

them. Kenenisa Bekele elite and Wilson Kipsang, I'm sure they've

:26:34.:26:36.

still got a bit of the London Marathon in their legs, it wasn't

:26:37.:26:42.

that long ago, and Gabius is there, as we expected. Kipsang Is the one

:26:43.:26:48.

who is just forcing the issue a little bit. Kenenisa Bekele by

:26:49.:26:55.

contrast, we weren't expecting too much and

:26:56.:26:58.

contrast, we weren't expecting too Kenenisa Bekele really ran

:26:59.:27:13.

brilliantly in the marathon. Now the questions are, because of that

:27:14.:27:17.

lesser build-up, is it going to have taken more out of his body and mean

:27:18.:27:22.

that he is not able to bounce back as quickly. Looking at the two of

:27:23.:27:26.

them coming he himself and Kipsang, I'm sure he will have recovered and

:27:27.:27:30.

come back a bit stronger than Kipsang will happen able to. I've

:27:31.:27:35.

found Batman and Robin! Isn't this fantastic. Your names are not Batman

:27:36.:27:42.

and Robin? Being Batman, I can't hear a thing! This is Mike! You're

:27:43.:27:49.

from Salford. Can you tell me a bit about why you're here today? We're

:27:50.:27:55.

raising money for Cancer Research. We've been doing some of the smaller

:27:56.:28:01.

runs around Manchester as Batman and Robin and this is the big event

:28:02.:28:06.

today. Now, Robin, do you take your instruction from Batman? Will he be

:28:07.:28:14.

pacing you today? Robin is not allowed to beat Batman! Yeah, I not

:28:15.:28:22.

allowed to beat him! Not at all? It is Batman and Robin, not Robin and

:28:23.:28:26.

Batman, there is a pecking order! All right, I'm hoping you put in a

:28:27.:28:31.

good sprint finish so you can beat Batman. Well, he can't breathe

:28:32.:28:34.

through his nose so it shouldn't be too bad! Approaching halfway in the

:28:35.:28:41.

men's race, they've just got through halfway in 14.17. It did pick up in

:28:42.:28:47.

that fifth kilometre, because they had been going at a fairly slow

:28:48.:28:54.

pace. At the moment heading for something like 28 and a half

:28:55.:29:00.

minutes, which in itself isn't that fast but it has just broken the

:29:01.:29:04.

field up a bit and Kipsang has taken on the challenge.

:29:05.:29:08.

And mirror image of the women's race when they have started to run

:29:09.:29:18.

quicker. That has caused questions to be asked of McNeill who is now

:29:19.:29:22.

dropping back and the three runners recovering from the London Marathon,

:29:23.:29:30.

able to stay with him but he is now dropping a little bit around that

:29:31.:29:36.

corner and Kipsang is keeping the pace moving along. That was 2.48

:29:37.:29:48.

kilometre for the fifth kilometre. I should remind you, great story

:29:49.:29:59.

about the Robinson twins, when they went out to Kenya, I remember seeing

:30:00.:30:03.

the on a couple of occasions and I thought we are going to go and live

:30:04.:30:08.

and train like the canyons and see what happens and it really turned

:30:09.:30:11.

their hold careers around, they have turned into very good athletes but

:30:12.:30:18.

they talk a lot about that change of attitude in terms of living,

:30:19.:30:23.

breathing, running and understanding the likes of Wilson Kipsang, and

:30:24.:30:28.

when you are surrounded in that culture and that ethos it is amazing

:30:29.:30:33.

how much difference can be made. They have struggled to get their own

:30:34.:30:39.

federation to realise their abilities and help them so they went

:30:40.:30:43.

and help themselves. They have had a great three years, four years,

:30:44.:30:49.

really. Struggling to hang on to this, the seventh kilometre was 2.4

:30:50.:30:57.

four. Kipsang pushing on. I am with the Manchester United runners, an

:30:58.:31:01.

array of runners here who put together a fantastic campaign to get

:31:02.:31:10.

loads of the people from the union. He is one of our professors, another

:31:11.:31:15.

colleague, Mike, decided to do something to Lincoln with really

:31:16.:31:19.

event that takes place to catch the imagination and get the University

:31:20.:31:22.

together we set the target of a thousand people between staff and

:31:23.:31:26.

students and we weren't sure we were going to get it but we have got

:31:27.:31:33.

1100. Absolutely amazing. Almost on cue, Bekele thinking enough is

:31:34.:31:37.

enough and away I go. Into the last kilometre. Looks behind every few

:31:38.:31:44.

strides and all of a sudden the gap is there. That was much easier than

:31:45.:31:51.

Dibaba who had to work to shake off Kiplagat in the closing stages,

:31:52.:31:56.

still checking over her shoulder, Kenenisa Bekele, as soon as he put

:31:57.:32:01.

his foot down, he easily moved away on a still checking behind him but

:32:02.:32:05.

he can relax and enjoy this run because I don't think Wilson Kipsang

:32:06.:32:08.

is going to be able to get anywhere close to challenging him. Bekele

:32:09.:32:16.

building his lead, Kipsang in second place, Richard Goodman is running

:32:17.:32:20.

very well for the British athletes, incest. There is Richard Goodman,

:32:21.:32:30.

Shaftesbury Harrier. Running very strongly indeed. Hoping for a good

:32:31.:32:37.

performance but at the front, Bekele with every single stride, stretching

:32:38.:32:43.

his lead away from Wilson Kipsang, who is looking ragged and tired. And

:32:44.:32:49.

like Dibaba, when he is at his best, there is no better side than

:32:50.:32:54.

Kenenisa Bekele, another look behind, looking strong, moving well.

:32:55.:33:00.

Obviously managed to shake off the London Marathon, great performance,

:33:01.:33:04.

it is out of his legs and has enjoyed his performance in

:33:05.:33:06.

Manchester and great to see him back. Kenenisa Bekele will of course

:33:07.:33:13.

hope that all he can do is show that he is in shape and show that he is

:33:14.:33:19.

ready and if somebody who is as great as he is at his capabilities

:33:20.:33:20.

on the track he great as he is at his capabilities

:33:21.:33:24.

selectors at some point put trust in him and you were saying at the

:33:25.:33:29.

beginning, Paula was mentioning how Ethiopian go away on camp, they look

:33:30.:33:34.

at how people are performing and surprise with selections and they

:33:35.:33:40.

can change their mind. All this will do is just serve a reminder that

:33:41.:33:48.

Kenenisa Bekele is on the road, over 10,000 metres, he can take on the

:33:49.:33:52.

best and almost putting his arms out to see, what do you think? Back to

:33:53.:33:56.

winning ways, the great champion that is the niece of Italy comes to

:33:57.:34:01.

take the title, the Great Manchester Run is his again, great to see him

:34:02.:34:10.

back, Kenenisa Bekele with a really solid run, solid performance. Too

:34:11.:34:15.

good for everybody today, including Wilson Kipsang.

:34:16.:34:22.

McNeill has asked Robertson, he looks behind, Robertson struggling

:34:23.:34:29.

in the latter stages, as expected, the Australian coming through, good

:34:30.:34:32.

performance from him, might be his best ever on the roads. McNeill gets

:34:33.:34:39.

third spot, Robertson coming in behind for fourth spot, looking a

:34:40.:34:41.

bit tired and ragged, in the middle behind for fourth spot, looking a

:34:42.:34:44.

of the race he forced things a little bit and we may be suggested

:34:45.:34:49.

his races coming into this didn't look great and evidence of that. He

:34:50.:34:54.

was under 29 minutes, I know he was hoping for something a lot quicker

:34:55.:34:55.

than that. This will be full of people in the

:34:56.:35:03.

not too distant future and about other milestone or the Great

:35:04.:35:09.

Manchester Run, 300,000 finishers will cross the line. They will not

:35:10.:35:16.

just be a 10,000 metre run but half marathon as well next year and this

:35:17.:35:19.

is what the course is going to be like.

:35:20.:35:44.

not just a 10,000 metres next year but the half marathon as well. Get

:35:45.:36:15.

online if you fancy being part of the Great Manchester Run.

:36:16.:36:21.

Richard Goodman the first of the British athletes just under 30

:36:22.:36:42.

minutes. COO great to see Dibaba back in the very encouraging

:36:43.:36:51.

performance. Fu Asil further down, Gemma Steel, best of the British

:36:52.:36:52.

athletes. Fourth victory for Simon Lawson.

:36:53.:37:09.

Shelly Woods coming through to defend her title, fourth title for

:37:10.:37:20.

her. Nikki Emerson in third. Kenenisa Bekele, great run today,

:37:21.:37:25.

you looked very happy when you crossed the line. Yes, because three

:37:26.:37:31.

weeks after the London Marathon I wanted to come here, so happy to

:37:32.:37:39.

come back after two years, very happy to be here with a big crowd

:37:40.:37:44.

here. They are great people. I am happy to be here. In terms of

:37:45.:37:56.

selection for Rio, you must be disappointed, was this a message to

:37:57.:37:57.

the selectors? I have already showed them before. I

:37:58.:38:05.

don't know why, of course I am not happy about it. They have to select

:38:06.:38:15.

maybe a third person. Fingers crossed we will see you in Rio. You

:38:16.:38:20.

are going to beat through the interpreter. How happy were you with

:38:21.:38:22.

your comeback race? I am so happy that I have this race

:38:23.:38:40.

and I try to test myself with the Manchester run and it has proved to

:38:41.:38:45.

be very good for me. Will we see you in Rio? I am going to try the 10000

:38:46.:38:53.

and hopefully I will make the team. You are both brilliant, thanks very

:38:54.:38:57.

much. We hope to see you both in Rio.

:38:58.:39:01.

Local hero and WBA lightweight champion Anthony Crolla is here once

:39:02.:39:06.

again running and he is not alone, he has recruited a group of people

:39:07.:39:09.

we are calling Anthony Crolla's army. This is a picture of my

:39:10.:39:17.

husband, I am running the Great Manchester Run in his memory. He was

:39:18.:39:22.

a world champion boxer, passionate about sport and exercise and it

:39:23.:39:26.

seemed a fitting way to do something positive in his memory. The two

:39:27.:39:31.

pictures, a big contrast, the one that I am holding is my last day of

:39:32.:39:38.

chemotherapy and the one that Aaron is holding is taken very recently

:39:39.:39:43.

and that is as together as a family. --

:39:44.:39:47.

I work for royal Manchester children's charity

:39:48.:39:51.

underrepresentation of the helipad that is built on the hospital site,

:39:52.:39:54.

we don't have access to one of these and we are one of the busiest and

:39:55.:39:58.

biggest children's hospitals in the UK. It is crazy we don't have access

:39:59.:40:02.

to this facility. This picture is of my younger sister who was diagnosed

:40:03.:40:07.

with autism two years ago, I'm running for autism research. This

:40:08.:40:13.

picture is my two daughters, the inspired me to do well as part of

:40:14.:40:17.

the run I want them to be proud and be part of Anthony Crolla's army.

:40:18.:40:23.

This is a picture of me and my daughter and my granddaughter

:40:24.:40:27.

watching a race my son was running in. I was only 19 stone and that

:40:28.:40:32.

picture, I remember putting a pound in the charity box and spending ?10

:40:33.:40:40.

in the burger van. And to see these people that were running for the

:40:41.:40:44.

family and friends, it just made me feel so selfish. This is my cousin

:40:45.:40:54.

who was born with PKU, a condition that he has to have low protein diet

:40:55.:40:59.

or it can cause brain damage and difficulties. This picture is very

:41:00.:41:05.

important to me because it was presented to meet after boxing

:41:06.:41:10.

tournament after a show work I boxed on when Anthony Kim as guest of

:41:11.:41:13.

honour, prior to be running with him on Sunday. Really looking forward to

:41:14.:41:22.

it. The Christie was everything to me. If somebody says your life, you

:41:23.:41:28.

want to repay it in the best way you can. It will feel like I have really

:41:29.:41:35.

crossed a barrier on the grief journey, it will be the start of a

:41:36.:41:41.

new life, my husband is still beside me.

:41:42.:41:47.

There they go journeys, you can see the numbers,

:41:48.:41:55.

everybody has a number on the back where they can write their own

:41:56.:41:59.

story, who they are raising funds for, so many thousands of stories

:42:00.:42:06.

out there and indeed, our own team here, Rob Llewellyn one of our

:42:07.:42:09.

regular motorbike pilots who provided excellent coverage on the

:42:10.:42:13.

road, he died suddenly while working in America. He loved his job and be

:42:14.:42:16.

loved working with him and beat dearly miss him and our thoughts are

:42:17.:42:19.

very much with his family and friends.

:42:20.:42:31.

At the finish line, lots of tired and weary bodies but pretty happy

:42:32.:42:36.

ones as well, hopefully a few personal bests being said today,

:42:37.:42:41.

some wind picking up. Huge crowd at Dean 's gate waiting for the

:42:42.:42:44.

finishers, looking for their loved ones. In various states of

:42:45.:42:50.

disrepair. Some have got a little bit left for a kick finish and there

:42:51.:42:55.

is a site that will they will need at the start of beans gate after ten

:42:56.:43:01.

kilometres. The effort is large on all the faces of those who come

:43:02.:43:04.

across and they will feel terrible and then they will feel the elation

:43:05.:43:09.

and be back to try on the race and back here next year as well because

:43:10.:43:13.

that is what running is all about, it really does give you a great

:43:14.:43:16.

high, which they are all experiencing now.

:43:17.:43:28.

Brooke was born with a birth defect, so we were rushed to Manchester to

:43:29.:43:36.

see a consultant. He operated on her when she was 11 days old and

:43:37.:43:43.

performed life-saving surgery. She has been an hospital all her life. I

:43:44.:43:49.

am used to it, it is the norm for me, so I take it as I come. She had

:43:50.:43:57.

surgery about two years ago. When I do sport,. The surgery didn't work,

:43:58.:44:02.

it went a bit wrong, I broke screws. Some of the pins that were holding

:44:03.:44:08.

everything together broke. It's been almost two years.

:44:09.:44:21.

Considering how old she is, it's her 15th birthday today, it was very

:44:22.:44:26.

difficult for her. I used to do triathlons beforehand. So going from

:44:27.:44:30.

doing stuff like that and nothing has been quite hard. When she had

:44:31.:44:37.

had the first knocked back on the surgery, she decided to do a thing

:44:38.:44:40.

on the Internet with her friends and it was called the forbidden mile.

:44:41.:44:45.

She said to her friends, I can't run a mile, but if you can, just do a

:44:46.:44:49.

mile and give a couple of quid to the Royal Manchester Children's

:44:50.:44:57.

Hospital. It was a 10k first and then I got into doing the mini-runs.

:44:58.:45:06.

This is her way of saying thank you to the Royal Manchester Children's

:45:07.:45:11.

Hospital. He will be coming round with me, he has been my surgeon

:45:12.:45:17.

since birth. Not only has the guy saved her life, he will now be

:45:18.:45:20.

running with her as well on her first attempt at a 10k, search or be

:45:21.:45:30.

fabulous. -- so it should be fabulous.

:45:31.:45:32.

We've just seen your VT, Brooke. What a brave soul you are. How

:45:33.:45:50.

excited are you to be here today? I'm very excited but I can't wait to

:45:51.:45:54.

get it over and done with! Your preparation must have been a bit

:45:55.:45:58.

different to other people? I'm not able to run, so I'm going to have to

:45:59.:46:01.

walk, so I've been walking everywhere and just trying as hard

:46:02.:46:05.

as I can. So you are mega fit? A little bit! You're here as well. On

:46:06.:46:12.

medical grounds, how safe is it for Brooke to be here today? It's a

:46:13.:46:16.

fantastic achievement, she is managing to do the walk, run,

:46:17.:46:21.

whatever, however way we do it. Fantastic achievement, she is an

:46:22.:46:25.

inspirational young woman. For yourself, being here, have you done

:46:26.:46:30.

the preparation you need to as well? No, for an athlete like myself...

:46:31.:46:34.

LAUGHTER It is quite a challenge! Brooke, you

:46:35.:46:41.

brought your family with you as well today. They are all here to is

:46:42.:46:45.

aboard you, who is running with you today, Jim, Katie, my mum and my

:46:46.:46:52.

dad, they're running. Is she going to pace you? She's a bit speedy? I'm

:46:53.:46:58.

not really sure! This must be a proud moment for you. She always

:46:59.:47:03.

said when she was old enough she would run the Manchester 10k and

:47:04.:47:08.

here she is, not running but she's doing it no matter what. Guys, I

:47:09.:47:12.

wish you the best of luck. Hope to see you at the finish line. Look at

:47:13.:47:15.

all these bright colours, fantastic. Thanks a lot.

:47:16.:47:19.

Well, it's been a great weekend for sport in the north-west. Obviously

:47:20.:47:25.

Man United won the FA Cup at Wembley but up here we have had the Great

:47:26.:47:28.

CityGames and Greg Rutherford looking in great form in the long

:47:29.:47:31.

jump. Yesterday was the next generation in the mini-run.

:47:32.:47:43.

It's great, kids are getting moving, aren't they? They're not sad that

:47:44.:47:57.

I'm in front of the PlayStations, the laptops... They are out there

:47:58.:48:02.

having a great time in the rain in Manchester. It's great to get so

:48:03.:48:08.

many kids out there getting active. My favourite bit was when I got the

:48:09.:48:13.

medal! I'm so glad because it's my first-ever medal. It was the best

:48:14.:48:19.

day of my life! I had so much fun! She'd had a great

:48:20.:48:30.

time, she's been really good. She's only three, it's her first one.

:48:31.:48:39.

He's just finished the race and we're really, really proud of him.

:48:40.:48:50.

You beat daddy! I did, I did! It was great fun, you wanted to run the

:48:51.:48:53.

whole way, didn't you? You didn't stop, did you? We're doing the 10k

:48:54.:49:01.

tomorrow as well. I'm running in the Great Manchester Run and I'm really

:49:02.:49:04.

excited. I'm running for the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, to

:49:05.:49:10.

hopefully raise enough money... I'm hoping to do it within 50 minutes

:49:11.:49:14.

for them, but famous last words. We will see. I've had the best day

:49:15.:49:19.

ever! CHEERING

:49:20.:49:27.

I see you proudly wearing your blue Peter badge. -- your Blue Peter

:49:28.:49:44.

badge. We had so many, go an Blue Peter! Loads of kids out here

:49:45.:49:51.

cheering for Blue Peter and wanting that sport badge also I suppose it's

:49:52.:49:55.

really aborted to get the message out and get the kids active.

:49:56.:49:59.

Definitely the important thing is not about how fast you go, getting

:50:00.:50:05.

to the start line is the hardest thing to do sometimes because it's

:50:06.:50:09.

scary and intimidating, but it's not about anything other than that, get

:50:10.:50:13.

to the start line and do your best. You're an inspiration, well done. So

:50:14.:50:14.

tired! My name is Amanda Scott and this is

:50:15.:50:30.

my run. I started my running journey in 2009 after my diagnosis of

:50:31.:50:33.

Crohn's disease which resulted in surgery. I ended up in coronary care

:50:34.:50:41.

and six months after coming out of coronary care I decided I was going

:50:42.:50:45.

to run the London Marathon. Running benefits might Crohn's disease -- my

:50:46.:50:54.

Crohn's disease because it eight the flow through the digestive system.

:50:55.:51:01.

It also helps with my fatigue and reduces my pain. I've also managed

:51:02.:51:07.

to reduce my dependence on morphine and tramadol, and reduced my chronic

:51:08.:51:14.

fatigue. Mentally I find it helps me to maintain a positive outlook on

:51:15.:51:17.

life, helping with the psychological side of this disease because it can

:51:18.:51:21.

be quite liberating. I always feel that anything is possible when I go

:51:22.:51:25.

out for a run, and when I do the races it's the little achievements

:51:26.:51:32.

that count for me. When I'm running, I tend to think of my mum, Leone

:51:33.:51:41.

Scott. She was my best friend and my biggest inspiration in life. She

:51:42.:51:46.

worked while I was having chemotherapy. She did everything,

:51:47.:51:51.

she held my hand and fought with me and was there in every single

:51:52.:51:55.

surgery I've ever had. Not having my mum here has been the hardest point

:51:56.:51:59.

in my life because you can never hear her say I love you again. When

:52:00.:52:07.

things do get tough, I tend to look up and think of my mum. I run to

:52:08.:52:11.

make my mum proud. A little bit of an uphill finish to

:52:12.:52:20.

the end, but most of them coping with it very well indeed. So many of

:52:21.:52:26.

the university crowd we've just seen their coming across the finish line.

:52:27.:52:28.

But there are still many yet their coming across the finish line.

:52:29.:52:45.

out there. That is Olly's Army, running for a great cause.

:52:46.:52:53.

One of the milder costumes we've seen today. We've seen three

:52:54.:53:01.

batsmans, Batmen! Three Batmans and seen today. We've seen three

:53:02.:53:14.

only two Robins, which is odd! Perhaps a little bit of rain in the

:53:15.:53:16.

act, but great conditions for running. There's no letup in the

:53:17.:53:23.

popularity of events such as this here in the UK and around the world,

:53:24.:53:27.

everyone wanting to get out on the streets. Fantastic to see.

:53:28.:53:35.

everyone wanting to get out on the popularity of the Great Manchester

:53:36.:53:37.

Run continues to grow and will grow again next year I'm sure.

:53:38.:53:49.

This is the 14th Great Manchester Run. It started back in 2003 and

:53:50.:53:56.

this time we have reached a milestone, the 300,000th finisher

:53:57.:53:59.

has crossed the line and he is with Phil Jones. You are the 300,000th

:54:00.:54:05.

finisher in the history of the Great Manchester Run. Excellent,

:54:06.:54:09.

excellent! How did they find you, how did they tell you? I was going

:54:10.:54:14.

to get some water and they called me up and said that number... It's my

:54:15.:54:20.

first Manchester run. My first 10k run has well, so I'm very excited

:54:21.:54:24.

about finishing. And you have a place in history! I'm very excited,

:54:25.:54:32.

very pleased as well. I'm lucky, I was pushing it and I slowed down, I

:54:33.:54:37.

don't know why I slowed down, but yeah, very happy. Congratulations,

:54:38.:54:41.

will you come back for more next year? Definitely I will do. You have

:54:42.:54:46.

to be 15 to running the Great Manchester Run, so not quite time

:54:47.:54:51.

for him yet, but a high-5 from Spiderman. The finish is coming

:54:52.:54:57.

through. Hard work for some, good effort.

:54:58.:55:05.

As somebody mentioned earlier on, it doesn't matter what your level of

:55:06.:55:10.

ability, what the reason may be that you want to stand on the start line

:55:11.:55:15.

and take up the challenge, no excuses, 10k, anyone can do it, even

:55:16.:55:23.

dressed like that. Well done. That is the same outfit you wore when you

:55:24.:55:28.

broke the mile record! We have had the 300,000th finisher in Great

:55:29.:55:34.

Manchester Runs today. Different looks on the faces... Camaraderie as

:55:35.:55:40.

well, running with people alongside you, you can make friends and share

:55:41.:55:47.

that moment when you come through. Part of the England rugby team

:55:48.:55:50.

coming through as well. Is it, really? No, two members of the

:55:51.:55:58.

Scottish rugby team coming through! Well, they look like they've had fun

:55:59.:56:02.

and that is the main thing. This all started out when people said they

:56:03.:56:08.

wanted fun runs, and that ethos has been continued. Well done, guys. A

:56:09.:56:17.

world champion boxer, Anthony Crolla, big supporter of the Great

:56:18.:56:20.

Manchester Run. You've taken part today with an army behind you! What

:56:21.:56:24.

was it like? It gets better and better every year. I was running

:56:25.:56:31.

with other people and the last one has just crossed the line, I made

:56:32.:56:35.

up. What is the word from the people who did it with you this year? They

:56:36.:56:40.

really enjoyed it. I crossed the line with a view of them and it's a

:56:41.:56:45.

fantastic experience. It just grows and grows every year. The support in

:56:46.:56:50.

the city comes out every year. The message for the people of Manchester

:56:51.:56:54.

is get out and have a go? Definitely, I did it once a few

:56:55.:56:57.

years back and every year since I've made sure I do it. It is a great

:56:58.:57:08.

occasion. Great to see you. I'm sure they loved seeing you to date. We're

:57:09.:57:11.

proud of you in this region and to come and give something back is

:57:12.:57:17.

tremendous. I feel lucky to be here. It just makes it better, sharing it

:57:18.:57:21.

with all these people. Thanks very much.

:57:22.:57:26.

Tonight, 8pm on BBC Two, that should be a great watch. And then league

:57:27.:57:35.

highlights on BBC One, 11th DBM this evening and five minutes later in

:57:36.:57:38.

Scotland. You can download the FA Cup catch up on the BBC iPlayer.

:57:39.:57:46.

That's it for another Great Manchester Run. Another great

:57:47.:57:48.

celebration of sport here. We've been privileged to watch Tirunesh

:57:49.:57:53.

Dibaba and Canon Bekele losing none of their fluency the road. --

:57:54.:58:02.

Kenenisa Bekele. Next year it will be back and better than ever with

:58:03.:58:07.

another half marathon. No excuses, see you then! It challenges you

:58:08.:58:12.

mentally but you feel like you're able to do anything. If I can do it,

:58:13.:58:21.

anyone can.
