A very good morning and welcome to our coverage of the

:00:53.:00:54.

A very good morning and welcome to Run also alongside me is the man the

:00:55.:00:58.

gun, David, Run also alongside me is the man the

:00:59.:01:01.

before I tell you what is coming up, I will help him get the wheelchair

:01:02.:01:03.

races under way. I will help him get the wheelchair

:01:04.:01:17.

your marks. SOUNDS HOOTER. That is the wheelchair is on their way and

:01:18.:01:21.

the women's race should be very competitive with Shelly Woods

:01:22.:01:25.

against Jade Jones, Shelly Woods is the defending champion. In the men's

:01:26.:01:29.

race, Simon Lawson will be hoping to go back to one better than last and

:01:30.:01:34.

take victory. A lot of raising the gum including two of the greatest

:01:35.:01:38.

distance runners of all time looking to add more Manchester glory to

:01:39.:01:43.

their glittering CVs. It is a beautiful day in Manchester, ideal

:01:44.:01:47.

running whether. Tens of thousands are lined up behind me and

:01:48.:01:52.

running whether. Tens of thousands the streets, travelling from far and

:01:53.:01:55.

wide to join in with this great occasion whether running

:01:56.:02:00.

wide to join in with this great running it is not primarily a race

:02:01.:02:02.

but a personal challenge, being part of something bigger, raising money

:02:03.:02:06.

for a cause or simply remembering. It is about running for a reason.

:02:07.:02:33.

I always feel anything is possible when I go out to run.

:02:34.:02:52.

Apologies, we seem to have a problem with the sound on that video. But we

:02:53.:02:59.

can tell you what is coming up in the next couple of hours, so much to

:03:00.:03:06.

look forward to. Manchester is one of the hotbeds of sport in the UK

:03:07.:03:11.

and this weekend encapsulates that with the City Games on Friday night

:03:12.:03:16.

and the next generation taking part in a mini man at the Etihad Stadium

:03:17.:03:21.

yesterday. Anthony Crolla will be running again this year and he has

:03:22.:03:24.

recruited an army to do it with him and they could not ask for anyone

:03:25.:03:27.

better to motivate them. So many runners taking to the streets this

:03:28.:03:33.

morning and is opening at so many emotional and inspirational stories

:03:34.:03:36.

to tell about why they have taken on the challenge of running 10,000

:03:37.:03:42.

metres. And six Olympic gold medals between them only begins to tell the

:03:43.:03:48.

story of the brilliance of Ethiopian duo Tirunesh Dibaba and Kenenisa

:03:49.:03:51.

Bekele who head up the elite fields. And hopefully that is the gremlins

:03:52.:03:56.

out of the system! It should be a great couple of hours. It is also a

:03:57.:04:01.

day tinged with sadness because a great friend and supporter of the

:04:02.:04:04.

Great Manchester Run is no longer with us. I am sure you will all

:04:05.:04:08.

remember Kirsty Howard at the couple of games in 2002. -- Commonwealth

:04:09.:04:17.

Games. She had an incredibly rare illness. She had been part of the

:04:18.:04:22.

Great Manchester Run since the beginning, defying the medical odds

:04:23.:04:26.

to live as long as she did, raising millions of pounds for Francis house

:04:27.:04:30.

children's Hospice in the process. With me is one of their sisters,

:04:31.:04:36.

Zoe, and Phil Taylor, who is part of a charity. Incredibly sad that she

:04:37.:04:40.

is not here. She has been such a big part of it is so tell me how proud

:04:41.:04:44.

you are of your sister and what she achieved. I don't think words can

:04:45.:04:49.

say how pride I am. I have done this run twice and I say I will never do

:04:50.:04:53.

it again also now she can't do it herself, I feel I have to step up

:04:54.:04:59.

because she did so much for Francis House. She was so selfless, all of

:05:00.:05:06.

the challenges in her life, the focus so much on doing good for

:05:07.:05:10.

others was inspirational. Definitely. And she never moaned,

:05:11.:05:15.

even on the days she was not feeling great, she got on with it. She had

:05:16.:05:19.

so much going on but she just did what she had to and carried on

:05:20.:05:29.

racing. Tell is about Francis House. Ed first started with the Kirsty

:05:30.:05:37.

appeal. -- it started. We reached the ?5 million goal in October 2006

:05:38.:05:41.

and then launched another campaign to raise ?3.5 million to build

:05:42.:05:49.

Francis Lodge which is the juvenile section at the hospice. We have

:05:50.:05:55.

built that and the Kirsty Club now is raising funds to run Francis

:05:56.:06:02.

House. Kirsty very much touched millions of people and one

:06:03.:06:08.

particular person, David Beckham, who we saw at the Commonwealth

:06:09.:06:12.

Games. It is amazing, what she achieved. When she was born and

:06:13.:06:17.

growing up, all of the challenges she had, they did not think she

:06:18.:06:24.

would survive beyond four. She has achieved so much, far more than

:06:25.:06:29.

anybody in a lifetime could add achieved. She received numerous

:06:30.:06:33.

awards and raised millions of pounds and all for the benefit of others

:06:34.:06:39.

and more people benefit from her hard work. I am sure it will be an

:06:40.:06:43.

emotional day, all the very best. And I know you will keep the memory

:06:44.:06:48.

of Kirsty burning brightly and thank you for speaking to us. We have two

:06:49.:06:52.

roving reporters bringing you all of the stories, Jeanette Kwakye, who

:06:53.:06:59.

will be hearing from shortly but first Phil Jones. I am here with a

:07:00.:07:03.

great 400-metre runners, Iwan Thomas. We have seen in the marathon

:07:04.:07:12.

and half marathon so ten K must be a breeze! It's not too bad. Six and a

:07:13.:07:18.

bit mild is OK, people think because you are a run at you can run any

:07:19.:07:21.

distance but for a sprinter, anything over half a mile hurts! But

:07:22.:07:27.

if I am sensible, it should be OK. You are running with a bit of a

:07:28.:07:30.

difference. You have got all of these. Today is a bit strange, I am

:07:31.:07:36.

going to attempt to live broadcast the whole event on this selfie

:07:37.:07:40.

stick. It will be uploaded onto the Internet and people can watch me

:07:41.:07:44.

live, going through pain and smiling and hopefully not getting slapped on

:07:45.:07:51.

the bottom by loads of people! That always happens! I get a little

:07:52.:07:55.

friendly pat. And people can message you en route. They can, they can put

:07:56.:08:00.

a message on the screen and that comes through to me. I just wanted

:08:01.:08:04.

to grab the essence of Manchester and show people what a great event

:08:05.:08:08.

this is. The sun is out at the moment which is rare here! I just

:08:09.:08:13.

want to show people what it is like, like a bird's eye view of a race

:08:14.:08:18.

like this. It is a fantastic idea, thank you for sharing it, we will

:08:19.:08:26.

check in with the footage later. That Iwan Thomas has boundless

:08:27.:08:29.

energy! Now to another former athlete turned media presenter,

:08:30.:08:37.

Jeanette Kwakye. I am with Jo Edwards who is taking part in the

:08:38.:08:42.

race today. Tell us why today is so important. I have supported the

:08:43.:08:48.

Chris Dean now for about seven or eight years. My husband Chris was

:08:49.:08:50.

treated at The Christie. eight years. My husband Chris was

:08:51.:08:56.

treatment he had from the hospital was fantastic. -- I have supported

:08:57.:09:04.

The Christie. I got pregnant during that time while he was ill and we

:09:05.:09:08.

had a little boy and no doubt without their help he would not be

:09:09.:09:12.

here. Chris unfortunately lost his battle with stomach cancer in 2010

:09:13.:09:17.

so I decided to do some fundraising and I started with a walk from our

:09:18.:09:22.

home in Newton in the Willows to Anfield, and it snowballed from

:09:23.:09:24.

there. I love the Anfield, and it snowballed from

:09:25.:09:28.

everything about it and I do what I can for them. For you, going from a

:09:29.:09:34.

walk to run, it is a big journey. How you prepared? I have been

:09:35.:09:40.

running for a few years. I took a challenge a couple of years ago to

:09:41.:09:45.

run 500 miles in a year and I did that. I decided to do a triathlon

:09:46.:09:47.

and did a couple of half that. I decided to do a triathlon

:09:48.:09:52.

so today I'm pretty comfortable! And you have a little training

:09:53.:09:56.

so today I'm pretty comfortable! And with your son who ran

:09:57.:10:00.

so today I'm pretty comfortable! And run yesterday. He did fantastic, two

:10:01.:10:02.

kilometres in just over ten minutes so he was made up! Again, he was

:10:03.:10:09.

spurred on by running for his dad. Thank you so much and good luck.

:10:10.:10:18.

The men's wheelchair race has reached Old Trafford, there were

:10:19.:10:24.

great celebrations there this morning after the FA Cup victory

:10:25.:10:28.

yesterday and Simon Lawson is on course for victory at the moment

:10:29.:10:34.

after coming second last year. And Jade Jones in the women's race,

:10:35.:10:39.

Shelly Woods not far behind, they will be battling it out for the

:10:40.:10:42.

victory. Shelly Woods is the defending champion. We have a couple

:10:43.:10:48.

more elite races to come, the women will be starting at 11:15am and the

:10:49.:10:59.

men and the masses start at 1130 Seo -- 11:37am. Here are some ones to

:11:00.:11:04.

watch. Headlining the women's field is triple Olympic champion and twice

:11:05.:11:07.

winning here Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia. Twice world marathon

:11:08.:11:13.

champion, is gaining endurance athlete was third in magister a year

:11:14.:11:19.

ago, Edna Kiplagat. Matt -- Manchester. European cross-country

:11:20.:11:21.

champion in 2040 and second last Manchester. European cross-country

:11:22.:11:26.

year, the best of British, Gemma Manchester. European cross-country

:11:27.:11:31.

Steel -- 2014. Leading the men's field is Kenenisa Bekele. One of the

:11:32.:11:37.

world marathon grades was runner-up that day, he's back to renew the

:11:38.:11:42.

rivalry, Olympic medallist Wilson Kipsang. From elite runners to an

:11:43.:11:52.

elite sportsmen, WBA lightweight champion Anthony Crolla. You ran

:11:53.:11:55.

last year and you are back with a whole bunch, you been meant touring

:11:56.:12:03.

them. We are calling them Crolla's Army. -- meant

:12:04.:12:08.

. I thought the gremlins were gone but we have a problem with the BT.

:12:09.:12:13.

Anthony, talk about what you have been doing.

:12:14.:12:17.

We have 12 runners, each representing one round of a boxing

:12:18.:12:25.

fight. They are raising money for a great cause and we are all at

:12:26.:12:28.

different levels but it has been great getting to know these people

:12:29.:12:31.

and I'm proud to be doing it with them. I am reliably informed we have

:12:32.:12:34.

got that film now. The greatest achievement is

:12:35.:12:43.

definitely winning the world title. When you set out to do something for

:12:44.:12:48.

an early age, to finally achieve it after many years, many ups and

:12:49.:12:53.

downs, to come back and achieved that is definitely my greatest

:12:54.:13:01.

achievement. I think that the training at times can be very tough.

:13:02.:13:06.

When you take those boxes in training, in a fight you know you

:13:07.:13:13.

can overcome a lot of things and likewise in fights, you know how

:13:14.:13:17.

tough it can get so you know how hard you have to push yourself in

:13:18.:13:23.

training. Running is important as part of training, different types of

:13:24.:13:27.

running, long distance or interval, on the track. It simulates in a

:13:28.:13:33.

fight where you will be working hard or building stamina. For them to ask

:13:34.:13:41.

the run in the army that has been put together, it means an awful lot.

:13:42.:13:46.

Listening to some of their stories, they are an inspiration to me. I

:13:47.:13:52.

love the city, there are not many more prouder Mancunians than me, the

:13:53.:13:57.

way the people are and get behind their own, you will see that on the

:13:58.:14:02.

race, the city comes out each year to support the race.

:14:03.:14:06.

And there will be more of those amazing stories later on. Tell me

:14:07.:14:13.

how this came about, how did you pick this true? It was very tough

:14:14.:14:18.

because we had a lot of entries but I think I have the perfect 12. It is

:14:19.:14:23.

not just young athletes, it is people of all ages and levels and

:14:24.:14:28.

each is doing it for a different cores and it's something I'm very

:14:29.:14:33.

proud to be a part of. -- causes. Have you enjoyed it? Of course,

:14:34.:14:39.

being a proud Mancunian and being asked to do that, this is the best

:14:40.:14:45.

day of the year for Manchester, the way the city comes out and support

:14:46.:14:49.

the run and a lot of great causes. I've really enjoyed it. This time

:14:50.:14:53.

last year we were talking about your rehab from the rubble incident when

:14:54.:14:57.

you tried to catch those burglars and got that head injury and what a

:14:58.:15:02.

year since then. WBA lightweight champion, this is just a little

:15:03.:15:06.

reminder of your last victory when you retain your title.

:15:07.:15:11.

What a shot that is with the right-hand! And the uppercut! The

:15:12.:15:17.

crowd are loving what they are seeing. He has sent his man to the

:15:18.:15:24.

floor and account has started! He looks to his corner and he has

:15:25.:15:30.

successfully defended his WBA lightweight title! Magical stuff

:15:31.:15:30.

from the man from Manchester. You must be thrilled with the way

:15:31.:15:40.

this year has gone. It could not have gone any better. Last time out,

:15:41.:15:47.

being an underdog again and being a further challenge, it was even

:15:48.:15:51.

sweeter than winning the title. I am enjoying life at the minute, keep

:15:52.:15:57.

working hard and improving. Next fight? Middle of September, who? I

:15:58.:16:04.

am not sure. Hopefully a champion and many more great nights here in

:16:05.:16:09.

Manchester. Maybe Vegas one day. It is time to the women's elite race

:16:10.:16:15.

and time to say hello to our commentators, Steve Cram and Denise

:16:16.:16:21.

Lewis. A beautiful day in Manchester. Really looking forward

:16:22.:16:28.

to some great racing. As Jonathan was saying, following all the

:16:29.:16:31.

stories through the next couple of hours, but the elite race is about

:16:32.:16:36.

to get underway and the women about to be introduced to the big crowds

:16:37.:16:41.

in the streets. The city game was here on Friday when it was a little

:16:42.:16:46.

bit less drive. Fionnuala McCormack, one of islands finest. -- dry. She

:16:47.:17:02.

has been running pretty well. Christel doornail, the European

:17:03.:17:14.

marathon champion. -- Daunay. A two-time world champion in the

:17:15.:17:21.

marathon, from Kenya, Edna Kiplagat. Her third year last year. Many of

:17:22.:17:30.

our British 10,000 metre runners were actually attempting to get into

:17:31.:17:35.

the British Olympic team at the track meet yesterday, Gemma Steel

:17:36.:17:43.

decided to come here, great to see Harry magister. It will be great to

:17:44.:17:47.

see whether she can take on the lady who will be introduced to the crowd

:17:48.:17:53.

now. One of the greatest distance runners of all time, Tirunesh

:17:54.:17:58.

Dibaba. Olympic 10,000 metre champion in 2008 and 2012. Will she

:17:59.:18:07.

be in Rio? We will be chatting with Paula about Tirunesh Dibaba. Great

:18:08.:18:18.

to see her back, took well over a year out. Lovely conditions. We hope

:18:19.:18:29.

for a good race here and I guess the big question is how fit is Tirunesh

:18:30.:18:36.

Dibaba? Good morning to Paula Radcliffe, you must be delighted to

:18:37.:18:43.

see her. It is great to see her back and I am eagerly anticipating seeing

:18:44.:18:47.

the kind of form she is in. She has been pretty cagey coming into this.

:18:48.:18:50.

She does not know, she took a long been pretty cagey coming into this.

:18:51.:18:54.

time to build back after the birth of her son and admittedly she gained

:18:55.:18:59.

a bit of weight, she was not running to the final stages of pregnancy, it

:19:00.:19:04.

took some time to get back into it. This is her first test out. Her main

:19:05.:19:09.

aim is to qualify for Rio. I think she will probably raise the 5000

:19:10.:19:15.

metres first. This will answer some questions and get the competitive

:19:16.:19:23.

juices flowing again in a relatively easing back into the field. I guess

:19:24.:19:31.

that is why today is important for her. If she is going to go onto the

:19:32.:19:37.

track and run a quick time, the Europeans do often pick the people

:19:38.:19:41.

running the fastest, reputations do not count for anything. For Tirunesh

:19:42.:19:46.

Dibaba, that is something that is somewhere in the future, the next

:19:47.:19:50.

three or four weeks she needs to run a quick time on the track. Today

:19:51.:19:55.

will be a huge indicator for her. Diane Nukuri runs her through the

:19:56.:20:01.

early stages as they run through the city centre, tens of thousands

:20:02.:20:05.

waiting for their opportunity to get going. They run behind where we are

:20:06.:20:11.

in Deansgate, taking a left and then heading out towards the Salford area

:20:12.:20:15.

and this part of the route, it is pretty fast. It is a flat course,

:20:16.:20:20.

Old Trafford always looming in the distance and of course the FA Cup

:20:21.:20:28.

winners last night. A fuselage heads around here today. A small loop

:20:29.:20:35.

around, not too far from the BBC HQ, Salford Quays. -- a few sore heads

:20:36.:20:44.

here today. Up into Deansgate where we are sitting patiently waiting for

:20:45.:20:52.

them to finish. So familiar route now, many of these athletes

:20:53.:20:56.

including Tirunesh Dibaba have run this. She is a two-time running

:20:57.:21:07.

winner. 2008, 2000 12. There is nothing... It is not about making

:21:08.:21:12.

excuses, but the Renault conditional reasons why she could not run fast

:21:13.:21:18.

today. The same to everyone else as well. -- 2012. The cause is pretty

:21:19.:21:27.

sheltered and not too many twists and turns, tight turns to slow the

:21:28.:21:32.

pace down. Really good conditions the getting faster times. Tirunesh

:21:33.:21:35.

Dibaba starting to ease away, she sat back a bit and allowed Diane

:21:36.:21:43.

McCurry and Fionnuala McCormack -- Diane Nukuri. It was under three

:21:44.:21:58.

hours ten minutes. We will get a split, the kilometre marker we can

:21:59.:22:03.

see what you were talking, it was about 3.9, 3.10, not too bad. A big

:22:04.:22:13.

group. Diane Nukuri leads in the early stages. This is the finish of

:22:14.:22:20.

the elite men's wheelchair race. It was a demonstration by Simon Lawson.

:22:21.:22:27.

Second only to David Weir in terms of men's wheelchair racing in the

:22:28.:22:31.

UK. He was out in front from the very start. Just outside the course

:22:32.:22:41.

record held by David Weir. 21.20. He was almost three minutes clear of

:22:42.:22:49.

Brett Crossley in second place. 3.11 the official time through the first

:22:50.:22:54.

kilometre, a pretty good, steady pace. It does not look to me as

:22:55.:23:03.

though to narrate the barber -- as though Tirunesh Dibaba is too keen

:23:04.:23:08.

on going fast yet. Training only tells you so much, you need to get

:23:09.:23:13.

into the race and feel your way into it. I would not expect to see her

:23:14.:23:17.

and less the pace slows down, I would not expect to see her make any

:23:18.:23:22.

significant moves before halfway. She wants to test herself out in the

:23:23.:23:25.

racing situation and feel her weight racing situation and feel her weight

:23:26.:23:30.

gradually back into competitive competition. 3.11, it is not

:23:31.:23:35.

superfast, it is a 32 minute pace. That is a decent enough pace for the

:23:36.:23:42.

first half, hopefully she will come back quicker in the second half.

:23:43.:23:52.

Talking about a 32 minute pace, Freya Ross is at the back of this

:23:53.:23:58.

group. Great running last night from Jess Andrews and Beth Potter,

:23:59.:24:05.

running the Olympic qualifying time in the race in Highgate last night.

:24:06.:24:09.

Jess Andrews, a massive improvement for her, going under 32 minutes,

:24:10.:24:14.

knocking a minute and a half off of her personal best. It was an

:24:15.:24:18.

outstanding step up. She has moved her personal best. It was an

:24:19.:24:23.

away to Spain and has been focusing on her running, it would be great to

:24:24.:24:29.

see her comeback and run so well. -- it was great to see her. We will

:24:30.:24:35.

have to see who the third British runner will be. We will have to see

:24:36.:24:40.

what the selectors saved. Keeping the same pace, 6.20, to two

:24:41.:24:47.

kilometres. The gaps are already opening up and Gemma Steel is not

:24:48.:24:51.

able to go with that, sitting in the second group. We saw our fourth win

:24:52.:25:00.

in the men's wheelchair race, Shelly Woods in the yellow helmet, much

:25:01.:25:07.

closer in the women's race. Shelly Woods pulled away to defend her

:25:08.:25:15.

title. Again a quick time. Just outside her own course record,

:25:16.:25:26.

21.51, she came through the second place Jade Woods. The victory was

:25:27.:25:37.

the Simon Lawson in the men's race. -- was for. Tirunesh Dibaba trying

:25:38.:25:46.

to force the issue a little bit here, Diane Nukuri kept the gap

:25:47.:25:54.

looking reasonably comfortable. Gemma Steel is in the second group.

:25:55.:26:01.

Tirunesh Dibaba breaking things up and as Paula said, perfect pacing,

:26:02.:26:08.

3.11, 3.11, identical times the best three kilometres, but now she means

:26:09.:26:12.

business. She dies and already starting to forge ahead. She will

:26:13.:26:17.

have missed racing and competing, she will enjoy getting out on

:26:18.:26:22.

familiar ground, she has the course record here. Just getting out there

:26:23.:26:26.

and being able to appreciate racing will give her extra energy and I'm

:26:27.:26:30.

sure she is enjoying running out there and is testing the others and

:26:31.:26:33.

asking some questions of them in terms of how fast they

:26:34.:26:37.

asking some questions of them in now. It has been interesting, her

:26:38.:26:38.

younger sister is the one who now. It has been interesting, her

:26:39.:26:46.

the big star, Roque in the world record at the 1500, even rumours she

:26:47.:26:51.

may do the five under ten, she cannot double up with a 5000 unless

:26:52.:26:56.

she runs a heat and a final on the same day. Maybe she is thinking of

:26:57.:27:02.

doing that. It is interesting, they kind of shift. Tirunesh Dibaba has

:27:03.:27:06.

had to plan her own route through here. We are not aware of a 10,000

:27:07.:27:11.

metre race that she could easily slot into. We will have to find one

:27:12.:27:15.

and set it up somewhere and hope that she can run quick enough to

:27:16.:27:20.

attract the attention of the Ethiopian selectors. There are

:27:21.:27:27.

already five Ethiopians who run faster than her, she is capable of

:27:28.:27:33.

running faster though. The spotlight has shifted.

:27:34.:27:45.

They are close her and her assistant, I don't whether they run

:27:46.:27:54.

together. There will be a bit of fire, she wants to get back to the

:27:55.:27:58.

same level. Talking about getting back, we can pop back to the start

:27:59.:28:04.

with Phil Jones. I am here on the VIP bus with who you could call to

:28:05.:28:08.

stall works of the Great Manchester Run, Peter Hook and Chris from

:28:09.:28:14.

Coronation Street. What brings you back? It is a good time to go to the

:28:15.:28:26.

shops. I am so slow! How quick are you? I normally get round into times

:28:27.:28:37.

-- in two days. We could go around together! This week

:28:38.:28:42.

-- in two days. We could go around weeks off. Just to see if this makes

:28:43.:28:46.

any difference, I don't think it will. Most of it is done on

:28:47.:28:53.

adrenaline. This is my 10th run. Congratulations on that. You come

:28:54.:28:59.

back for great charitable causes. We used to run for leukaemia and

:29:00.:29:08.

lymphoma research which is now being renamed Blood Wise. The Christie,

:29:09.:29:16.

they have helped many of my friends and family, it is the least I could

:29:17.:29:19.

do. Some and family, it is the least I could

:29:20.:29:26.

Manchester. It is a great occasion. -- some up the occasion. It gets you

:29:27.:29:36.

going, they are all shouting at you. It is an embarrassing. I am thinking

:29:37.:29:42.

of doing it masked. It is great you come back each year, wonderful to

:29:43.:29:46.

see you here. Enjoy the race. Thank you. Great to see them and so many

:29:47.:29:55.

celebrities taking part raising so much money for charity. Around about

:29:56.:29:59.

30 million I think is the expected target which is phenomenal. At the

:30:00.:30:06.

front it is Tirunesh Dibaba, Edna Kiplagat and Diane Nukuri. Diane

:30:07.:30:16.

Nukuri run a marathon in New York. They are hanging on to Tirunesh

:30:17.:30:26.

Dibaba. We are just approaching four kilometres, she has picked it up,

:30:27.:30:32.

for five seconds, it is broken up, just the three of them now. Old

:30:33.:30:40.

Trafford. It is quiet today, but it was not quiet down in Wembley

:30:41.:30:44.

yesterday, a great day for the club, commiserations to all Palace fans.

:30:45.:30:52.

The streets around Old Trafford quiet. Gemma Steel just struggling a

:30:53.:31:04.

little bit. Daunay wearing 104 and the Polish athlete, Dominika

:31:05.:31:12.

Napieraj 110 and Inglese of Italy. It has been a difficult period for

:31:13.:31:19.

Gemma Steel. She said herself that she wanted to make the 10,000 metre

:31:20.:31:23.

team. She knew how well some of the other girls were going but is

:31:24.:31:28.

struggling to stay with that second group. Dibaba, it is not twisty and

:31:29.:31:35.

Tony Hibbert slightly downhill away from the football ground so they are

:31:36.:31:40.

able to keep stretching out -- twisty and turning. They went

:31:41.:31:48.

through the third kilometre in 3.0 six. That is what did the damage.

:31:49.:31:54.

Tirunesh Dibaba is looking in control of this and she looks the

:31:55.:32:05.

most comfortable right now. I think what happened with Gemma Steel, she

:32:06.:32:15.

went to San and raced on the 10,000 metres on the road. She picked up a

:32:16.:32:20.

virus and struggled to come back. She came into this feeling more

:32:21.:32:24.

upbeat and stronger but she is not back to her form of last year.

:32:25.:32:31.

Really stretching them out. You can see the little gaps, Nukuri hanging

:32:32.:32:39.

on. And Edna Kiplagat, having flown in from America, that might have had

:32:40.:32:43.

an effect with some jet lag so Dibaba is taking advantage as they

:32:44.:32:48.

approach halfway. It is the FA Cup final yesterday, a big day for

:32:49.:32:53.

football and it is a big year for football with the European

:32:54.:32:55.

Championship is coming up, we are all hoping England will be doing

:32:56.:32:58.

Championship is coming up, we are well and the man who has to make

:32:59.:33:01.

sure that happens is our started today and he is with Phil Jones.

:33:02.:33:06.

And obviously you are talking about Roy Hodgson, the England manager. It

:33:07.:33:12.

is all about France coming up but today it is all about Manchester

:33:13.:33:16.

with a big game later and the starter today. First of all I'm very

:33:17.:33:22.

happy and honoured to be asked to assist the start. It is fascinating

:33:23.:33:28.

to see so many people taking part and watching and I can only hope

:33:29.:33:31.

that they have good weather for the race because I am certain that will

:33:32.:33:36.

help them. You always get a warm welcome in Manchester, I hope you

:33:37.:33:41.

get that later for the England team as the build-up start in earnest for

:33:42.:33:46.

the Euros. It does today but we have had a good few days training at St

:33:47.:33:49.

George's Park and we are looking forward to the game this afternoon

:33:50.:33:53.

which is important for us, the first in our three preparation games here.

:33:54.:33:58.

I am sure that the players and staff are all very excited about playing

:33:59.:34:03.

at the City of Manchester Stadium. Anything you still need to learn

:34:04.:34:06.

about your squad in the next few games or have you got it pretty much

:34:07.:34:12.

in your head what to do? I know the players very well. The only one I

:34:13.:34:16.

don't know well is Marcus Rashford but all the others I have worked

:34:17.:34:20.

with over quite a long period so it is not a question of finding out

:34:21.:34:24.

about them, it is just making certain that we start our

:34:25.:34:29.

preparation and, when the game against Russia in Marseille comes

:34:30.:34:33.

around, we are 100% prepared as to how we want to play. And do you get

:34:34.:34:39.

a sense of the excitement building up? The nation goes football crazy

:34:40.:34:43.

in the major championships and I'm sure you're being approached all the

:34:44.:34:48.

time about it. I am but I enjoy it. I think it is very healthy and I'm

:34:49.:34:53.

delighted that the country is excited. I also feel we have an

:34:54.:34:56.

awful lot of support throughout the country. I think people like the

:34:57.:35:01.

team and what they are trying to do. We go there with high hopes and we

:35:02.:35:06.

also carry the high hopes of the nation. Good luck this afternoon and

:35:07.:35:10.

with the Euros and enjoy the occasion today. I shall, thank you.

:35:11.:35:15.

Good luck to Roy England team and our other home

:35:16.:35:22.

nation teams taking part as well. Tirunesh Dibaba has put her foot

:35:23.:35:27.

down. The last kilometre was the quickest of the race. Diane Nukuri

:35:28.:35:34.

is now struggling. Edna Kiplagat is hanging on the Ethiopian. I wouldn't

:35:35.:35:41.

say she is looking like her old self but this will be a real confidence

:35:42.:35:46.

booster for Dibaba if she can keep forging on and keep the pace going.

:35:47.:35:52.

When you come back, the first six, 7k, it is in that bit of the race

:35:53.:35:57.

that you find out how fit you are. It is, and the closer you get to the

:35:58.:36:03.

finish, the easier it gets. Certainly she doesn't look like she

:36:04.:36:07.

is putting herself under any undue pressure or asking questions she

:36:08.:36:12.

might not be able to answered. She looks smooth and controlled, a quick

:36:13.:36:16.

look over her shoulder to see who has dropped off and it is Diane

:36:17.:36:21.

Nukuri who has not been able to go with them. She seems to have got a

:36:22.:36:25.

bit annoyed by Edna Kiplagat running in her slipstream and has moved

:36:26.:36:28.

across the road to encourage her to run alongside and give her a bit

:36:29.:36:38.

less drafting. Last week Edna rant about 31.58. That was about the same

:36:39.:36:45.

time as we saw at Highgate last night -- she ran. That may be

:36:46.:36:52.

explained why Diane Nukuri is unable to go with this pace as it picks up.

:36:53.:36:57.

Again Dibaba looks across, it is almost as if she wants her to take

:36:58.:37:01.

Again Dibaba looks across, it is she is not that keen to keep doing

:37:02.:37:09.

it herself. I agree, just going through 6k. Fionnuala McCormack is

:37:10.:37:14.

now in fourth place. Gemma Steel is in eighth place I can tell you,

:37:15.:37:18.

still trying to hang onto that little group that she was with who

:37:19.:37:22.

are about five seconds behind McCormack. Dibaba will want to win,

:37:23.:37:29.

that is the first thing, and to make sure she does nothing silly. But she

:37:30.:37:34.

will want to win well and feeling good and hopefully with a time well

:37:35.:37:40.

under 32 minutes I would think. They are on schedule for that. That

:37:41.:37:47.

previous kilometre was still on pace, suddenly maintaining the pace

:37:48.:37:52.

they have been setting. She settled for a bit and got the feeling that

:37:53.:37:57.

Kiplagat would not pick it up so, because I think she is chasing a

:37:58.:38:03.

time, she has defined out what shape she is in. You can't do that by

:38:04.:38:07.

sitting and waiting so she might as well push on and that will tell her

:38:08.:38:11.

a lot more than just sitting behind Kiplagat and waiting for the win.

:38:12.:38:15.

Absolutely, she will get some answers at the end of the race. If

:38:16.:38:21.

you compare a road ten Kate with a track ten Cate, you should be able

:38:22.:38:22.

to go a bit quicker -- ten K. A pretty nice day in Manchester. We

:38:23.:38:42.

had a A pretty nice day in Manchester. We

:38:43.:38:51.

thankfully that has all gone. And now we can look forward to the start

:38:52.:38:57.

of the men's elite race and the massed ranks of the thousands who

:38:58.:39:04.

will follow them on this now famous route so let's introduce you to some

:39:05.:39:11.

of the contenders. Matthew Hynes from Middlesbrough, he will perhaps

:39:12.:39:17.

be the best of the British. He won his last race, the Middlesbrough

:39:18.:39:25.

Park Run. Next to him, someone who had a brilliant race last autumn

:39:26.:39:33.

when he ran for the marathon which made him the new German

:39:34.:39:37.

record-holder for that distance. He had to drop out of London sadly when

:39:38.:39:40.

he was hoping for a good performance. Zane Robertson,

:39:41.:39:50.

Commonwealth frons medallist at 5000 metres and he has shown that he can

:39:51.:39:55.

mix it with the top Africans when he is fit -- bronze-medallist.

:39:56.:40:02.

He has never won this race, he has been second on two occasions but

:40:03.:40:11.

Wilson Kipsang, former marathon world record holder, he is hoping to

:40:12.:40:16.

will be his day but if it is to be, yes to beat a legend of the sport,

:40:17.:40:23.

from Ethiopia, the three-time Olympic champion, Kenenisa Bekele.

:40:24.:40:27.

He came back with a bang in the London Marathon with a great

:40:28.:40:31.

performance. Sadly, not good enough to see him selected for Rio. But

:40:32.:40:37.

let's get them under way. Roy Hodgson, full of smiles as ever.

:40:38.:40:48.

The Great Manchester Run is about to get underway. There we go. The

:40:49.:40:56.

klaxon sounded by the England manager. Many will continue to cross

:40:57.:41:05.

the line over the next couple of hours because they can't all go on

:41:06.:41:08.

the route at the same time because it is only 10k. These are the lucky

:41:09.:41:18.

ones who get to go first. A wonderful organisational effort to

:41:19.:41:22.

get so many people primed and ready to go and get them away safely

:41:23.:41:26.

across the start line will stop you can see how they are channelled in

:41:27.:41:33.

sober is not a mad rush. Everybody has their own individual chip. --

:41:34.:41:40.

they are channelled so there is not. Perhaps they might be running for a

:41:41.:41:43.

personal best, looking at their watches as they cross the line as

:41:44.:41:50.

ever. And it is great to see how this race has grown over the years.

:41:51.:41:59.

Today we expect to see the 300,000th finisher to cross the line at around

:42:00.:42:04.

about 12:30pm. We can go through some of the other names as you can

:42:05.:42:11.

see the elite start list. McNeil from Australia. I would not expect

:42:12.:42:16.

any of these to figure at the front. Good to see Richard Goodman having a

:42:17.:42:23.

run. And just to reiterate, most of the British 10,000 metres runner

:42:24.:42:26.

were in that trial yesterday. Ross Millington came out on top in that

:42:27.:42:32.

race at Highgate. Andy Burnham and others were attempting to cement

:42:33.:42:35.

their place but it did not go quite so well for them as it did for the

:42:36.:42:39.

women so they will have to wait and see. Nobody got the Olympic

:42:40.:42:44.

qualifying time last night. We are back with the elite women, Dibaba

:42:45.:42:49.

still has Kiplagat on her shoulder, still cannot shake off the two-time

:42:50.:42:54.

world marathon champion, despite setting a good pace. 3.84 the

:42:55.:43:00.

seventh kilometre. She is trying hard and pushing but the brigade is

:43:01.:43:08.

still there. Edna Kiplagat is not interested in taking on the pace --

:43:09.:43:12.

Kiplagat is still there. She is making Tirunesh Dibaba work

:43:13.:43:25.

for this as they go through eight kilometres in 25.0. Very even pace

:43:26.:43:32.

and very controlled. She might be working out if she has saved a bit

:43:33.:43:36.

in her legs for the final stages because she is reckoning she will

:43:37.:43:40.

not shake off Edna Kiplagat and will need to save a bit although, unless

:43:41.:43:46.

she is faking it a bit to force Kiplagat to take it on, she looks as

:43:47.:43:48.

though she is starting to struggle. Kiplagat to take it on, she looks as

:43:49.:43:55.

This is Nukuri. One thing I used to say about Tirunesh Dibaba, I always

:43:56.:43:59.

thought she was one of the most economical runners. She has the

:44:00.:44:03.

speed and power and when she was fit and at her best, you would a video

:44:04.:44:08.

and say that is what a distance runner should look like. She used to

:44:09.:44:14.

float over the ground. Watching her today, she has got a little way to

:44:15.:44:18.

go to get back to that. That is expected, it will take some time. I

:44:19.:44:24.

think she has to try to concentrate on winning the race. They are still

:44:25.:44:28.

setting a pretty good pace, she should be reasonably happy but she

:44:29.:44:32.

will not want to be beaten by Edna Kiplagat today. And she will be

:44:33.:44:36.

fairly confident that she has retained her finishing speed and

:44:37.:44:39.

will be able to use that and will be thinking about trying to keep level

:44:40.:44:44.

with Edna Kiplagat and not take too much out of the tact and -- out of

:44:45.:44:52.

the tank. She still looks a beautiful, economical runner, but

:44:53.:44:56.

not floating as normal as you say, and if you contrast the strength in

:44:57.:44:59.

her legs, you can see she has missed a bit, and you can see the miles in

:45:00.:45:05.

the legs of Edna Kiplagat. That is not quite there with Tirunesh Dibaba

:45:06.:45:12.

where it used be. I agree. That can and will come back, I'm pretty sure.

:45:13.:45:17.

Roads are one thing, track is another. She knows the sort of shape

:45:18.:45:23.

she will have to be in if she is to be selected for Rio which will be

:45:24.:45:27.

tough, and then to go and content for a medal. It would be great to

:45:28.:45:33.

see her there. The sport needs it big start at the major

:45:34.:45:34.

championships. The men have gone through the first

:45:35.:45:45.

kilometre and run 2.30 five. Wilson Kipsang still has a bit of the

:45:46.:45:51.

London Marathon in his legs. Arne Gabius Isner as we expected, so is

:45:52.:45:59.

Robertson. Wilson Kipsang is forcing the issue. We were not expecting too

:46:00.:46:10.

much from Kenenisa Bekele and he pulled it out of the bag for the

:46:11.:46:14.

London Marathon. Everything we were hearing in the build-up was he was

:46:15.:46:17.

not in shape, he really turned it around. He had not really done a lot

:46:18.:46:24.

of volume and long runs, but he was able to hold in and record that 2.6.

:46:25.:46:39.

Looking at Wilson Kipsang and Kenny said the KLA, I would say he would

:46:40.:46:44.

come back a bit better for this race than Wilson Kipsang would have been

:46:45.:46:54.

able to. -- and Kenenisa Bekele. Tirunesh Dibaba trying to force the

:46:55.:47:00.

issue. That looks like a hierarchy carry than the old Tirunesh Dibaba.

:47:01.:47:08.

She checks her watch. She knows that Edna Kiplagat with 800 to go, she

:47:09.:47:11.

would never normally Edna Kiplagat with 800 to go, she

:47:12.:47:15.

to even frightened Tirunesh Dibaba in any way whatsoever, but there

:47:16.:47:19.

will be some doubts when you are coming back. At this point you would

:47:20.:47:24.

think she will be happy to sit, but she still wants to keep pushing and

:47:25.:47:29.

keep the pressure on. She is definitely starting to push earlier

:47:30.:47:33.

than she would normally do. I have to say that Edna Kiplagat, this race

:47:34.:47:38.

will have given her a lot of confidence no matter what the

:47:39.:47:43.

outcome is over the last 600, 700 metres, she is struggling a bit, she

:47:44.:47:47.

was third in Tokyo, she raced well last week in New York. She has not

:47:48.:47:52.

been back to the form that saw how one the world titles, she has been

:47:53.:47:57.

working her way back to it. Now for the first time Tirunesh Dibaba

:47:58.:48:11.

keeps looking behind and she sees a five-metre gap, looking at her

:48:12.:48:15.

watch, I don't why. She needs to concentrate on running towards the

:48:16.:48:17.

finish. The crowd is starting to build and this looks better from

:48:18.:48:20.

Tirunesh Dibaba. She is confident, checking every few strides as to

:48:21.:48:24.

what is happening. All she needs to know is the gap is growing and the

:48:25.:48:30.

race is in the bag. Now she can concentrate on finishing strongly in

:48:31.:48:33.

the last hundred metres or so. Coming round the final bend, a

:48:34.:48:38.

uphill finish in the Great Manchester Run. It is good to see

:48:39.:48:43.

Tirunesh Dibaba coming back after so long away. The last here two years

:48:44.:48:48.

ago and this could be the start what we hope will be a true comeback onto

:48:49.:48:53.

the track and perhaps a return to the sort of form that saw her win in

:48:54.:48:58.

London, win in Beijing, taking the Olympic gold medals. It would be

:48:59.:49:04.

fantastic to see her back in Rio. Tirunesh Dibaba into the last 200

:49:05.:49:09.

metres or so. The crowd getting ready to receive her. The time has

:49:10.:49:14.

been pretty good today, it would give her a small indication, not

:49:15.:49:17.

until she gets on the track and has a go will she find out what shape

:49:18.:49:19.

she is in, but this has been a go will she find out what shape

:49:20.:49:21.

comeback for the three a go will she find out what shape

:49:22.:49:26.

champion, Tirunesh Dibaba returns to win the Great Manchester Run for the

:49:27.:49:32.

third time. A winning time around 31.16, we will get that confirmed

:49:33.:49:37.

officially, that is a pretty good return for Tirunesh Dibaba. Edna

:49:38.:49:41.

Kiplagat did so well to hold on for so long, as ever she was never going

:49:42.:49:47.

to be able to content with Tirunesh Dibaba's speed in the latter stages.

:49:48.:49:53.

Diane Nukuri, a good performance, expect to see her running in the

:49:54.:49:56.

Olympic games. She will take third spot. And under 32 minutes. A good

:49:57.:50:05.

performance from her. Diane Nukuri, a fair way behind. Tirunesh Dibaba,

:50:06.:50:15.

must have been a little bit nervous before today. Fionnuala McCormack

:50:16.:50:31.

was fourth for a long time. She gets fifth. The French athlete comes in

:50:32.:50:42.

at six. Gemma Steel, watching the clock as she comes up. She will be

:50:43.:50:47.

the first of the British athletes to cross the line. It will be under 33

:50:48.:50:51.

minutes, that is a bit of an improvement from what we have seen

:50:52.:50:55.

so far from Gemma Steel, 32.40 three. And there are our top three.

:50:56.:51:03.

To Mr Barber looks like she has only just been out for a stroll, a coffee

:51:04.:51:16.

and a croissant, a 10K run. -- to Tirunesh Dibaba. A great performance

:51:17.:51:22.

from her as she heads towards her campaign to get into the team 30.

:51:23.:51:28.

Back with the men. Talking about getting in the teams are Rio. Where

:51:29.:51:33.

use a prize when there was the announcement over the weekend that

:51:34.:51:37.

the Ethiopians have only selected Kenenisa Bekele as a reserve? If you

:51:38.:51:43.

look at time, he is not the quickest. Given his track record, I

:51:44.:51:51.

was surprised, given how he came back to run so well in London on a

:51:52.:51:55.

summer course, the other Ethiopians had run fast. Having said that, the

:51:56.:52:01.

Ethiopians, they were not particularly organise, none of the

:52:02.:52:05.

runners in London knew what they had to do to get selected. They have

:52:06.:52:09.

done this in the past, real five or six names and then they will pick

:52:10.:52:13.

from that closer to the time. Don't read too much into who is reserved

:52:14.:52:18.

and who is on the team, they can change that as they see the form

:52:19.:52:24.

they are in. They have just gone through four: metres in just under

:52:25.:52:29.

11.5 minutes. They are not going back quickly. -- four kilometres. I

:52:30.:52:39.

don't think Zane Robertson has been in such great shape. His half

:52:40.:52:45.

marathon he ran in New York, a high 62 minutes. The last 10K he ran was

:52:46.:52:52.

not that quick either. Probably today is perfect for him to be

:52:53.:52:56.

competitive, but he was suggesting he was going to try to run down in

:52:57.:53:02.

the lower 28 minutes, he has a way to go to pick up to that pays, that

:53:03.:53:07.

is why he has decided to force it may be. He has seen the times

:53:08.:53:11.

through four: metres, picks it up with Kenenisa Bekele and checking to

:53:12.:53:21.

through four: metres, picks it up see who has come away from the

:53:22.:53:28.

group. Wilson Kipsang, he trains with a group in Ethiopian. He likes

:53:29.:53:33.

to get himself in shape in Kenya, he runs with a group in Ethiopian, gets

:53:34.:53:41.

himself into good shape. He is accustomed to training along Wilson

:53:42.:53:45.

Kipsang, Kenenisa Bekele. They are both Manchester United supporters,

:53:46.:53:50.

may have got a boost as they went past Old Trafford. They are working

:53:51.:53:54.

together to get the pace moving along, four of them are clearly

:53:55.:53:59.

moving away from the rest. It is interesting to see the elites

:54:00.:54:04.

grabbing some water, it is therefore the masses, leave enough, there are

:54:05.:54:10.

30,000 people behind you! Jeanette is waiting with some of the people

:54:11.:54:17.

ready to go. I have found Batman and Robin! Isn't this fantastic! Your

:54:18.:54:22.

names are a bit more simple than Batman and Robin. I cannot hear a

:54:23.:54:30.

thing! This is Mike, you are from Salford, can you hear me now? Can

:54:31.:54:36.

you tell me why you are here today. We are raising money for Cancer

:54:37.:54:40.

research, we have been doing the locals around Manchester as Batman

:54:41.:54:44.

and Robin and this is the big event today. Thanks to everyone who gave

:54:45.:54:50.

us some money. Robin, do you take your instructions from Batman, will

:54:51.:54:54.

he be pacing you today? I will be behind him. He is not allowed to be

:54:55.:55:01.

made! I am not allowed to beat him at all. It is Batman and Robin, not

:55:02.:55:09.

Robin and Batman, there is a pecking order. I am expecting a good spring

:55:10.:55:15.

-- sprint finish. Good luck. Jeanette with some of those who may

:55:16.:55:31.

get a little warm out there today. The sun is shining, good to see.

:55:32.:55:35.

Look at them all waiting for their chances. There are various waves,

:55:36.:55:44.

people know when to get ready to get on the road. They are raring to go.

:55:45.:55:50.

Meanwhile, approaching halfway. The mens rea is, I have seen they have

:55:51.:55:56.

just gone through halfway. 14.17, it did pick up in the physical matter,

:55:57.:56:00.

they had been going at a fairly slow place.

:56:01.:56:02.

they had been going at a fairly slow Pace. Heading for something around

:56:03.:56:13.

20 point five minutes. The fifth column that has broken the field up

:56:14.:56:19.

a bit. Wilson Kipsang has taken on the challenge and is building the

:56:20.:56:24.

pace. A mirror image of the women's race. That has caused questions to

:56:25.:56:35.

be asked of David McNeill, he is dropping back from this. Zane

:56:36.:56:42.

Robertson is taking it to them, but he is dropping a bit round the

:56:43.:56:46.

corner and instead of pushing the pace, he is the one trying to hang

:56:47.:56:50.

on as Wilson Kipsang keeps the pace moving along. You can see it on his

:56:51.:57:00.

face, he is starting to look as though he is struggling a little bit

:57:01.:57:11.

to keep on with this place. -- pace. A bit quiet down in Salford this

:57:12.:57:16.

morning, if you people out there watching and cheering on these

:57:17.:57:21.

world-class, you look at Kenenisa Bekele, he is one of the best if not

:57:22.:57:28.

the best ever, some people say be quiet when you say those sorts of

:57:29.:57:32.

things! But it is good to see him back, a lot of people had written

:57:33.:57:38.

him off. The performance in London if nothing else will have done a lot

:57:39.:57:43.

for his confidence. Wilson Kipsang, he has had an up-and-down period. He

:57:44.:57:51.

will want to make sure... He would love to get the victory today.

:57:52.:57:54.

Robertson hanging on there. I suppose you never know, you know

:57:55.:58:00.

better than most, Paula, when to come back and get back on the road,

:58:01.:58:08.

how much time it takes to recover. Wilson Kipsang will have been

:58:09.:58:11.

disappointed with his performance in London. Where is Kenenisa Bekele

:58:12.:58:18.

will be absolutely delighted. The levels of confidence coming into

:58:19.:58:22.

today. It can make a difference how you run the race, Wilson Kipsang

:58:23.:58:26.

will be disappointed, he did not run to tick the well by his standards in

:58:27.:58:30.

London, but maybe he did not push too hard, maybe he switched off when

:58:31.:58:34.

he realised he was not having a great day. With the frustration, he

:58:35.:58:39.

was able to bounce back here and run well. He knows that to stand any

:58:40.:58:44.

chance against Kenenisa Bekele, he has to make it a hard race from this

:58:45.:58:49.

far out, because he cannot get anywhere near to

:58:50.:58:52.

far out, because he cannot get over the closing 800 metres, even

:58:53.:58:53.

1000 metres of the over the closing 800 metres, even

:58:54.:58:59.

Already he has turned the screw enough,, it looks like they are

:59:00.:59:04.

maintaining the pace, opening up growing daylight with Zane Robertson

:59:05.:59:13.

behind. I should remind people, a great story about the Robertson

:59:14.:59:18.

twins. They went out to Kenya, I render seeing them on a couple of

:59:19.:59:22.

occasions and they said we will live and train like the Kenyans do and

:59:23.:59:26.

see what happens. They turned their careers around. They have turned

:59:27.:59:33.

into very good athletes, but they talk a lot about the change of

:59:34.:59:37.

attitude in terms of living, breathing, running, and

:59:38.:59:43.

understanding the likes of Wilson Kipsang is from there as well. When

:59:44.:59:48.

you are surrounded by that culture and ethos, it is amazing how much

:59:49.:59:52.

difference it can make. They struggled to get their own

:59:53.:59:55.

federation to recognise their abilities and help them, so they

:59:56.:59:59.

went and helped themselves. They have had a great four years.

:00:00.:00:05.

Struggling today though to hang onto theirs. The seven kilometre was 244,

:00:06.:00:14.

Wilson Kipsang pushing on. Richard Goodman miss having a good race, he

:00:15.:00:21.

was back in fifth place. We will get a split at eight, tours. Wilson

:00:22.:00:28.

Kipsang and Kenenisa Bekele, an Ethiopian and Kenyon in battle. Two

:00:29.:00:32.

of the great names of marathon running.

:00:33.:00:42.

Bekele as to persuade the Ethiopian selectors that he is worth a gamble

:00:43.:00:55.

for Rio -- has to. Just a stride or two between these two, very much

:00:56.:00:57.

mirroring what we saw two between these two, very much

:00:58.:01:02.

race with Kipsang knowing the danger of Bekele will stop a lot of miles

:01:03.:01:08.

in his legs but he always has and he always will, you never lose your

:01:09.:01:14.

ability to sprint finish. Bekele looks good, relaxed, running well,

:01:15.:01:19.

dropping his arms to show he is relaxed. He does look very relaxed.

:01:20.:01:26.

A lot of his normal bounce is there. That can take a while to come back

:01:27.:01:30.

after running a hard marathon like he did, having to dig deep in the

:01:31.:01:38.

final stages to be able to run that Watt. He has that strength in his

:01:39.:01:43.

legs and he is bouncing along, as if to say, you haven't shaken the oft

:01:44.:01:54.

-- to be able to run 2.06. I need somebody who is a bit more up on the

:01:55.:01:58.

fan suggests costumes. They are going to be warm! Great conditions,

:01:59.:02:05.

a slight breeze out there, the sun is out but the temperature is not

:02:06.:02:14.

too high, perfect for a 10k. These two are locked together stride for

:02:15.:02:20.

stride. 250 on the previous kilometre.

:02:21.:02:23.

They have slowed a little bit because the fifth and sixth were

:02:24.:02:31.

pretty quick. Kipsang is looking to hang onto Bekele who seems to be

:02:32.:02:34.

holding himself back a little bit. It has not been super fast. It has

:02:35.:02:42.

been quicker since 4k which is why these two are out on their own.

:02:43.:02:47.

There is Robertson will stop Bekele would have the option, he talked

:02:48.:02:50.

about maybe going onto the track but I don't think that is an option

:02:51.:02:54.

because he will have focused so much on the marathon. To change onto the

:02:55.:03:00.

10,000 metres, because of their strength in depth, even the great

:03:01.:03:05.

Kenenisa Bekele, only the marathon is an option at Rio. Particularly

:03:06.:03:09.

given his injury problems come into the London Marathon. Those calf and

:03:10.:03:15.

Achilles problems, that means getting into spikes and racing on

:03:16.:03:17.

the track is a huge getting into spikes and racing on

:03:18.:03:22.

probably prefer to keep working in races like this, to reinforce his

:03:23.:03:29.

form to the selectors and hope they will look at his championship

:03:30.:03:33.

performance record and his huge potential in the marathon against

:03:34.:03:36.

the fast times that the other runners have recorded over the

:03:37.:03:41.

distance. They are going through eight kilometres in 22.40 which is

:03:42.:03:50.

maintaining that pace. You can see the gap to Robertson is 12 seconds

:03:51.:03:54.

and growing and he might come under threat for that third spot because

:03:55.:03:59.

McNeill is running strongly but is still nine seconds behind. This is a

:04:00.:04:04.

long, straight road, and if people had started to falter you can reel

:04:05.:04:09.

them in but these two have got it to themselves. The pace picked up in

:04:10.:04:18.

the middle after the first 4k, not going too fast, and then they pulled

:04:19.:04:23.

away with Robertson but Robertson could not maintain the pace. They

:04:24.:04:27.

are not running super fast and Robertson is looking very tired, may

:04:28.:04:31.

be paying for that uplift in the middle and he will come under

:04:32.:04:35.

pressure from his Antipodean rival very shortly. He looks as though he

:04:36.:04:39.

is limping a little bit and does not look comfortable. He will struggle

:04:40.:04:44.

to hold on to third place. In contrast, these two look pretty

:04:45.:04:51.

comfortable, Kenenisa still dropping his arms. In contrast to Dibaba, he

:04:52.:04:56.

does not have a particular time goal, he just wants to run well and

:04:57.:04:59.

win He just wants to race well and come

:05:00.:05:14.

away having beaten Kipsang. It is definitely Bekele who is forcing the

:05:15.:05:18.

issue and Kipsang is happy for him to do that. He knows the inevitable

:05:19.:05:23.

will happen in the latter stages and he will hang on for as long as he

:05:24.:05:28.

can. I guess Bekele will wait as long as he can't. They are picked it

:05:29.:05:32.

up so they will both be hurting a bit. Just a metre. This is not a big

:05:33.:05:39.

effort from Bekele to win it yet but he has another look at Kipsang. 2.48

:05:40.:05:50.

for the eighth kilometre. And now about a mile to go, a little less

:05:51.:05:58.

than that, about 1400 metres. And when they see the 9k, I would not be

:05:59.:06:03.

surprised if we cede Bekele putting his foot down a bit more. He would

:06:04.:06:08.

be worried about being outkicked by Kipsang but he will want to relax in

:06:09.:06:13.

the last 800 metres. We are expecting Robertson, he was not

:06:14.:06:19.

moving well, to come under pressure. They have gone through nine

:06:20.:06:25.

kilometres in about 25.2. And almost on cue, Bekele thinks enough is

:06:26.:06:33.

enough and away he goes. Like Dibaba, it is such a mirror of the

:06:34.:06:38.

women's race, he looks behind every few strides and suddenly the gap is

:06:39.:06:43.

there. That was much easier than four Dibaba who had to work to shake

:06:44.:06:47.

off Edna Kiplagat. She was still getting over her shoulder in the

:06:48.:06:54.

later stages. Bekele moved away easily and he is still checking

:06:55.:06:58.

later stages. Bekele moved away he can relax and enjoy this run in.

:06:59.:07:02.

I don't think Wilson Kipsang will be able to get close to challenging

:07:03.:07:08.

him. Bekele building his lead, Kipsang is in second place,

:07:09.:07:12.

Robertson coming under pressure. Richard Goodman is running well, the

:07:13.:07:16.

first of the British athletes, in fifth place. There he is, from the

:07:17.:07:25.

shaft three Harriers. -- Shaftesbury Harriers. Running very strongly in

:07:26.:07:32.

and heading for a good performance. Bekele, with every stride,

:07:33.:07:36.

stretching his lead away from Wilson Kipsang who is looking a bit ragged

:07:37.:07:43.

and tired. And like Dibaba, when he is at his best, there is no better

:07:44.:07:48.

side than Kenenisa Bekele will stop he is looking strong, moving

:07:49.:07:53.

side than Kenenisa Bekele will stop Obviously managed to shake off that

:07:54.:07:56.

London Marathon where he had a great performance, and he has enjoyed it

:07:57.:08:00.

here in Manchester and it is great to see him back. Kenenisa Bekele

:08:01.:08:07.

will of course hope, all he can do is show he is in shape and ready.

:08:08.:08:13.

For somebody as great as he is with his record and

:08:14.:08:16.

For somebody as great as he is with track, he has to hope that the

:08:17.:08:17.

selectors put some trust in him and selectors put some trust in him and

:08:18.:08:23.

you said at the beginning, how Ethiopia don't always they go on

:08:24.:08:27.

camp and look at how people are performing. Despite the selections

:08:28.:08:31.

they make this far out, they can change their minds. All this will do

:08:32.:08:39.

is serve as a little reminder. Kenenisa Bekele, yes, it is only

:08:40.:08:45.

over 10k but he can beat the best and was almost putting his arms out

:08:46.:08:50.

to say, what did you expect? He is back to winning ways, the great

:08:51.:08:54.

champion that is Kenenisa Bekele who takes the title of the Great

:08:55.:08:59.

Manchester Run. It is great to see him back. 28.08, a really solid

:09:00.:09:09.

performance. Too good for everybody including Wilson Kipsang. We are

:09:10.:09:17.

watching for third spot and Robertson is going to hang on.

:09:18.:09:24.

Sorry, McNeill has passed Robertson. He looks behind. Robertson was

:09:25.:09:28.

struggling in the latter stages and as expected the Australian comes

:09:29.:09:31.

through and that might be his best ever on the roads will stop McNeill

:09:32.:09:39.

gets third spot, Robertson coming in for fourth place, looking a bit

:09:40.:09:43.

tired. I think he forced things a bit in the middle. We suggested that

:09:44.:09:49.

his races coming into this did not look great. Evidence of that. He was

:09:50.:09:54.

under 29 minutes but I know he was hoping for something a lot quicker

:09:55.:09:58.

than that. Great to see Kenenisa Bekele back. He wonder

:09:59.:10:04.

-- he won this race in 2014 so this was his second victory. Debra

:10:05.:10:12.

Selassie won it on four occasions. Best Dapper Selassie -- Dapper

:10:13.:10:20.

. This is a solid performance from Gabius and he has overhauled Richard

:10:21.:10:33.

Goodman who will come in in sixth place. Gabius looks a little

:10:34.:10:40.

distressed as he crosses the line. Richard Goodman has beaten some good

:10:41.:10:44.

athletes today and running 10k on the road is something he would not

:10:45.:10:47.

normally do but well done to him, just under 30 minutes.

:10:48.:10:58.

What a treat we have had this morning watching Tirunesh Dibaba

:10:59.:11:04.

take the women's race on her comeback and Kenenisa Bekele the

:11:05.:11:07.

men's race, both beautiful runners. And a lot of -- a lovely gesture

:11:08.:11:14.

from Wilson Kipsang as they crossed the line, that he is the number one,

:11:15.:11:19.

Bekele. This will be full of people in the not too distant future and

:11:20.:11:23.

there is a milestone today for the Great Manchester Run. The 300,000th

:11:24.:11:28.

finisher will cross the line and there is also a milestone next year.

:11:29.:11:36.

There will also be a half marathon as well and this is what the course

:11:37.:11:38.

will be like. confirmation of the men's result.

:11:39.:12:52.

Strong running from Kenenisa Bekele. Richard Goodman was the first

:12:53.:12:59.

British athlete. Tirunesh Dibaba, great to see her back and very

:13:00.:13:01.

encouraging performance. Nukuri ran well for third place and

:13:02.:13:12.

Gemma Steel was the first British athlete. The earlier starters this

:13:13.:13:21.

morning were the wheelchair racers. It was a fourth victory for Simon

:13:22.:13:24.

Lawson, a long way clear of Brett Crossley. Shelly Woods and Jade

:13:25.:13:29.

Jones had a very good race but Shelly Woods defended her title,

:13:30.:13:31.

also a fourth title for her. Not just a 10k next year but a half

:13:32.:13:45.

marathon as well. Entries are open as of 12 minutes ago so you can get

:13:46.:13:50.

it online if you want to enter. There is still so much more to come

:13:51.:13:55.

this afternoon after the elite races have finished. It was fantastic to

:13:56.:13:59.

be chosen as part of the team of Anthony Crolla. Being from

:14:00.:14:04.

Manchester as well, it is good to be part of his team. When things do get

:14:05.:14:10.

tough, I tend to look up and think my mum. All you have to do is start

:14:11.:14:17.

walking, then you can start jogging and then running. That is the way

:14:18.:14:25.

forward. She was born with a birth defect so we were rushed to

:14:26.:14:29.

Manchester and we saw a consultant who performed life-saving surgery.

:14:30.:14:36.

It is not just a day of support here and it be a whole with the City

:14:37.:14:42.

Games on Friday evening, Greg Rutherford looked particularly good

:14:43.:14:46.

in the long jump. And yesterday at the Etihad Stadium, it was the mini

:14:47.:14:47.

run. It's great, the kids are getting

:14:48.:15:13.

moving. But not sat at home in front of laptops, they are having a run

:15:14.:15:17.

and a really good time, even in the rain, good old Manchester! It is so

:15:18.:15:20.

nice to see so many kids getting active.

:15:21.:15:26.

My favourite bit was in the race, it was my first-ever medal. It was the

:15:27.:15:45.

best day ever! I had so much fun! She had a great time, she is only

:15:46.:15:50.

three, it was her first run and she really enjoyed it. He has just

:15:51.:15:59.

finished the race and we are really proud of him. You beat daddy! Idea

am running the Great running for the hospital, I am

:16:20.:16:31.

hoping to do it within 50 minutes tomorrow, famous last words. We

:16:32.:16:36.

hoping to do it within 50 minutes see. I have had the best day ever!

:16:37.:16:44.

CHEERING As you see in the DT, it is raising

:16:45.:16:51.

money for the helipad at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. How

:16:52.:17:01.

are you feeling? -- in the report. It is such a beautiful atmosphere,

:17:02.:17:07.

it is amazing. Today is really important to you, to have that

:17:08.:17:12.

helicopter pad in Manchester, tell me how much it means to you.

:17:13.:17:16.

helicopter pad in Manchester, tell doing it for a good cause and I want

:17:17.:17:22.

to be here for everyone. Right on cue! He is absolutely

:17:23.:17:28.

to be here for everyone. Right on is so important that we have this

:17:29.:17:32.

here in Manchester. How will it feel when you are amongst these people

:17:33.:17:37.

and you are running for this doorman. I really wanted to do this

:17:38.:17:50.

-- for this little man. It is amazing and to get to the finish

:17:51.:17:54.

-- for this little man. It is line, it would be like a dream come

:17:55.:17:55.

true. How much help as you line, it would be like a dream come

:17:56.:18:00.

your husband, they have been with me through the training and Little

:18:01.:18:06.

Jeremiah as well. Just to see them all the time. We wish you the best

:18:07.:18:09.

of luck. So many still waiting there to get

:18:10.:18:28.

out on the streets. I said earlier on it is a massive logistical

:18:29.:18:35.

operation. It works like clockwork and it is crowded down at the start

:18:36.:18:43.

line, we are here at Deansgate, welcoming the athletes who are

:18:44.:18:47.

running pretty good Times, 38 minutes about to go through on the

:18:48.:18:52.

clock. From the first of the Mass starters. The orange ones are the

:18:53.:19:01.

quick ones. They are coming through in waves. A huge number of runners,

:19:02.:19:06.

close to 40,000 last year, not sure of the fact numbers this year. They

:19:07.:19:12.

will file down, the whole course moving out towards Old Trafford and

:19:13.:19:16.

then it comes back towards the city centre at the top of your picture, a

:19:17.:19:21.

bit of a breeze on the way back, coming in from the West. Good, broad

:19:22.:19:28.

roads and on they come. They continue to warm up at the behest of

:19:29.:19:34.

the organisers. It is a long wait and it is hemmed in, you do your

:19:35.:19:39.

warm up and then you are hemmed in, you jump up and down and do some

:19:40.:19:45.

gentle aerobics, stretching. It looks fantastic. I would be tired

:19:46.:19:51.

after that. I would be annoyed, I am not very good at arm waving. It

:19:52.:20:00.

might be some sort of record for the biggest keep fit class. Don't even

:20:01.:20:05.

suggest it, I am sure there is a record out there for that sort of

:20:06.:20:21.

thing. Zumba. You would know! It won't be long to go. If you were

:20:22.:20:32.

watching a bit earlier at the start, I was speaking to Anthony Crolla,

:20:33.:20:36.

the WBA lightweight champion, a real superstar in Manchester. He recently

:20:37.:20:41.

retained his title. He has been mentoring a group of people,

:20:42.:20:46.

Crolla's Army, he is quite a man and they are quite a group of people.

:20:47.:20:54.

There are two pictures, there is a bigger contrast, that is my last day

:20:55.:21:01.

of chemotherapy. At The Christie. The one that my daughter is holding,

:21:02.:21:06.

that was taken recently, asked together as a family. This

:21:07.:21:11.

represents the reasons why I am running. -- this is us together as a

:21:12.:21:21.

family. This is the helipad we want to have on the site. We do not have

:21:22.:21:29.

one of these and we are the biggest in the UK. My sister was diagnosed

:21:30.:21:34.

with autism two years ago. I am running for autism research. It was

:21:35.:21:40.

fantastic to be chosen as part of the team with Anthony Crolla. He is

:21:41.:21:47.

a great person, when I met him I realised he is really nice. This is

:21:48.:21:53.

a picture of my husband and I am running the Great Manchester Run in

:21:54.:21:59.

his memory. He was a world champion Thai boxer, he was passionate about

:22:00.:22:06.

sport and exercise and it seems fitting. My two daughters inspire me

:22:07.:22:15.

to do well. I want them to be proud. They or any proud of me for doing

:22:16.:22:23.

that. -- they are really proud of me for doing that. This is a picture of

:22:24.:22:29.

me and my daughter and granddaughter watching my son running. I was 19

:22:30.:22:34.

stone, I remember putting a pound in the charity box but spending ?10 in

:22:35.:22:40.

the burger van. To see these people who were running for their family

:22:41.:22:45.

and friends, it just made me feel so selfish. This is my cousin who was

:22:46.:22:57.

born with PKU, you need to have a low protein diet or it can cause

:22:58.:23:00.

brain damage and learning difficulties. This picture is very

:23:01.:23:08.

important to me, it was presented to me at a boxing tournament after a

:23:09.:23:14.

show where I boxed on. I am proud to be running with him on Sunday. I am

:23:15.:23:21.

really looking forward to it. I had gone on a holiday of a lifetime to

:23:22.:23:27.

Australia and I always wanted to go on a Scooby Doo ride. I got on it

:23:28.:23:31.

and before it went off, the alarm went off to save can the big lady

:23:32.:23:37.

get off. I had to get off in front of everybody, it was so humiliating,

:23:38.:23:45.

it was unbelievable. It is not everyday you get world champion

:23:46.:23:56.

boxer training you. I am used to fighting, but now the running is my

:23:57.:24:02.

first sport. There were a few people who had done a bit, I was nervous.

:24:03.:24:09.

It was really good. I had seen Anthony before on TV and being from

:24:10.:24:14.

Manchester as well, it is good to be part of his team. It was fantastic,

:24:15.:24:23.

it felt so good. I tried to put some power in. I am sure that he smiled

:24:24.:24:29.

at one point, it would be terrible to hit him in the face and get it

:24:30.:24:35.

really wrong! When I am short of breath, I think of her and I keep it

:24:36.:24:42.

going. The Christie, it means everything to me today, they say

:24:43.:24:47.

that my life and you want to repay them in the best way you can. It

:24:48.:24:52.

would feel like I would have crossed a barrier in the grief journey. It

:24:53.:25:00.

will be the start of a new life with my husband still beside me but in a

:25:01.:25:04.

different way. That is how I feel about it. A lovely group of people

:25:05.:25:12.

and Anthony Crolla has done a great job with them. We will be speaking

:25:13.:25:17.

to him later on. The finishes are streaming across the line, pretty

:25:18.:25:22.

decent times. Phil Jones took a short cut and he is with one of the

:25:23.:25:30.

proper finishes. I am with actor George Raynsford. You put the rest

:25:31.:25:35.

of the celebrities to shame with that kind of time, how pleased are

:25:36.:25:40.

you? I was really pleased. I stopped taking my watch with me. If you do

:25:41.:25:46.

not make your time and your miles, it doesn't motivate you. It was a

:25:47.:25:51.

pleasant surprise, I just went for it. How good are the conditions?

:25:52.:25:57.

Perfect. Good weather for the support to come out, not too sunny,

:25:58.:26:04.

everyone got some Burton last year. -- got sunburnt. I run for Blood

:26:05.:26:12.

Wise, formally leukaemia and lymphoma research. We are raising

:26:13.:26:25.

awareness and funds to help bat. -- to help that. Thanks. It is a

:26:26.:26:36.

beautiful day today. It is almost a bit warm. It is a privilege to see

:26:37.:26:41.

the runners go past me. Each one has an incredible story to tell. This is

:26:42.:26:49.

my run. A few years ago my weight had got out of control, I was eating

:26:50.:26:54.

anything and everything and I was 23.5 stone and I needed to do

:26:55.:27:00.

something about it. It is a big challenge. People ask me to do

:27:01.:27:05.

things, being lazy, I did not want to do anything, sitting around,

:27:06.:27:11.

eating. Confidence wise, speaking to friends and seeing them wearing the

:27:12.:27:14.

clothes you want to wear, do no you will not look as good as them,

:27:15.:27:19.

speaking to different people on a daily basis, it is not a nice

:27:20.:27:23.

feeling. I was watching all these athletes running on the TV and they

:27:24.:27:28.

were running the touch a long time and mentally it challenges you. You

:27:29.:27:32.

think you cannot do it and the word I cannot get stuck in your head. I

:27:33.:27:38.

went to the gymnasium one day and I was enjoying it. I saw progress and

:27:39.:27:43.

the weight dropping off, my jeans size were going lower, the T-shirt

:27:44.:27:48.

sizes were getting smaller, then I was 8.5 stone lighter. For what I

:27:49.:27:56.

have achieved, I am really proud, the journey continues, it does not

:27:57.:28:01.

ever end. I am proud inside. I am talking to you people, I am

:28:02.:28:05.

introducing myself, I am engaging with people, I am happy, the

:28:06.:28:14.

confidence is sky high. I am running for Cancer research, my auntie

:28:15.:28:18.

passed away recently and a friend at work has finished her chemotherapy.

:28:19.:28:22.

I know suffering from these diseases is terrible and I'm running this for

:28:23.:28:27.

them. If you watching this interview, I made it this far, I am

:28:28.:28:32.

doing the ten Kate, if I can do it, anyone can. Start walking, then you

:28:33.:28:36.

can start jogging, then you can start running, that is the way

:28:37.:28:38.

forward. That is certainly a bit of a

:28:39.:28:50.

transformation. All British athletes are getting ready for Rio, hopefully

:28:51.:28:57.

to be selected. We have a student here at magistrates University and

:28:58.:29:05.

she has taken some training out -- at Manchester United and she has

:29:06.:29:09.

taken some time out of training to inspire people to get involved in

:29:10.:29:10.

the Great Manchester Run. I tried to encourage everyone to get

:29:11.:29:22.

involved. It is always a great event, a great turnout, it is

:29:23.:29:26.

exciting that the University are putting so many people into the run.

:29:27.:29:31.

I first heard about it and I thought we will get 100 if we are lucky and

:29:32.:29:36.

then when they exceeded 1000, that is fantastic and they are all

:29:37.:29:41.

starting to gather! It is a great way to get people up and out, people

:29:42.:29:46.

who would not normally run a ten Kate, but raising money for charity.

:29:47.:29:59.

-- ten kilometres. We are raising money for the Red Cross and marry

:30:00.:30:12.

Kiri Cancer research. -- Marie Curie. I am witty confidence in my

:30:13.:30:20.

abilities. I have good injuries. Temple that it should not be a

:30:21.:30:26.

problem for me. -- ten: matters should not be a problem for me.

:30:27.:30:36.

Sport is a really important part of life and you can gain new friends

:30:37.:30:41.

and get a sense of achievement but also raised money for charity so it

:30:42.:30:46.

should be a really nice, positive event. I wish them the best of luck,

:30:47.:30:51.

it does not matter how long it takes, enjoy the moment and do a lot

:30:52.:30:55.

of good for yourselves and the University and those great

:30:56.:31:00.

charities. I am with the Manchester University runners. They have put

:31:01.:31:07.

charities. I am with the Manchester together a fantastic campaign to get

:31:08.:31:09.

loads of people from the University running. Tell me about it. Myself

:31:10.:31:18.

and one of our colleagues had the idea to do something to link into

:31:19.:31:23.

this event, to really capture the imagination and get the university

:31:24.:31:27.

together. We said the target of 1000 the book between 1000 people --

:31:28.:31:36.

between staff and students. There are 1100 members of

:31:37.:31:38.

between staff and students. There students. You are the general

:31:39.:31:42.

secretary of the students union. Tell me how you got involved. Were

:31:43.:31:48.

you always in the running? This is my first ever run! I'm a bit

:31:49.:31:53.

petrified. We got told about it and thought everybody should get

:31:54.:31:56.

involved. We wanted to push people who had never run before to do

:31:57.:32:01.

something new and bring the fun and atmosphere of exercise. What has the

:32:02.:32:07.

impact been like at the University? It's been incredible. Everybody is

:32:08.:32:11.

at our campus and there is like a thousand people all getting ready!

:32:12.:32:18.

It's a great buzz. This unexpected -- I'm expecting a massive social.

:32:19.:32:23.

And we have asked everybody to raise ?100 so we're hoping to raise

:32:24.:32:28.

?100,000 collectively. I wish you the best of luck today, good luck.

:32:29.:32:36.

And they are at the start line ready to go. There must be some sort of

:32:37.:32:42.

world record for the biggest group of runners, those purple shirt

:32:43.:32:48.

streaming through. 1100 in total. That is the record for biggest group

:32:49.:32:55.

from one place. -- that must be a record. We're going to look back at

:32:56.:33:00.

some of the elite races starting with the wheelchairs and Andrew

:33:01.:33:07.

Cotter. In the men's race, the man in front at the very start really

:33:08.:33:13.

dominated things, Simon Lawson. He did not have much competition, he

:33:14.:33:17.

had a good race with David Weir last year but he is not raising this year

:33:18.:33:22.

so it was left to Simon Lawson for just about the whole race. The

:33:23.:33:27.

women's race was far closer between Shelly Woods on the right and Jade

:33:28.:33:31.

Jones. They've had a close race until the final to take. For Simon

:33:32.:33:37.

Lawson, he was out on his own in a quick time, just outside the course

:33:38.:33:45.

record of David US. -- David Weir. And it was a good time as well for

:33:46.:33:49.

Shelly Woods who took the fourth title.

:33:50.:33:51.

I know this is a familiar for you both. Four wins apiece in

:33:52.:33:58.

Manchester, what is it about the race you like so much? It's a

:33:59.:34:02.

brilliant atmosphere. I love coming back here to race. The course is

:34:03.:34:09.

quick as well, a bit bumpy but it's good and good fun. Simon, a trouble

:34:10.:34:15.

free run for you? Yes, the really good race, nice weather and no wind,

:34:16.:34:21.

better than the rain yesterday! It must be a relief when you wake up

:34:22.:34:26.

and you see the sun peeping through because it was a bit wet earlier but

:34:27.:34:30.

perfect concessions. Really good conditions for a good time. Not too

:34:31.:34:36.

windy going out and nice coming back. I was really pleased with my

:34:37.:34:39.

race. I was pushed well by Jade back. I was really pleased with my

:34:40.:34:44.

pretty much all the way and managed to get away in the last 3k. I kept

:34:45.:34:51.

going and didn't look back. I was a bit worried because my wheel was

:34:52.:34:55.

coming loose! I thought if I don't go, she is going to do me. I was

:34:56.:35:01.

pleased to get one over on her. Simon, what do you take out a race

:35:02.:35:08.

like today in a big Paralympic year? So many athletes are jockeying for

:35:09.:35:13.

position, or is it do for you and your confidence? It is a good boost.

:35:14.:35:17.

position, or is it do for you and I was just chasing my time today

:35:18.:35:19.

because I was out front so I was trying to get a PB for this cause

:35:20.:35:27.

which I did so that puts me in good stead for Rio. Congratulations to

:35:28.:35:31.

you both. Hopefully we will see you trying for another five next year.

:35:32.:35:36.

Yes, and maybe the Great North Run later in the year. Thank you for

:35:37.:35:43.

talking to us. Strong performances from Shelly Woods and Simon Lawson.

:35:44.:35:48.

And in the men's and women's elite races that we were in the real treat

:35:49.:35:54.

with two of the greatest distance runners of all time. Steve Cram had

:35:55.:36:01.

the story. And those names came into the run with contrasting

:36:02.:36:03.

preparations. Tirunesh Dibaba has not raced since 2014 when she was

:36:04.:36:10.

last here in Manchester. Now a proud mum and this was a real indicator

:36:11.:36:14.

for her as to where her comeback was. Could she make the team for Rio

:36:15.:36:20.

and defend her Olympic title? She got some answers against a pretty

:36:21.:36:23.

good field. Gemma Field was trying to hang on as the best of the

:36:24.:36:30.

British athletes. -- Gemma Steel. Dibaba showed she is not far from

:36:31.:36:37.

the best, winning in a good time of 31.16. Kiplagat was second and Diane

:36:38.:36:46.

Nukuri was third. For Kenenisa Bekele, he had already cemented his

:36:47.:36:50.

place in Rio with the London Marathon, or Sony hoped because the

:36:51.:36:55.

selectors had only picked him as a reserve so he wanted to give them a

:36:56.:37:00.

reminder as to why they might want him in the team. He looked good and

:37:01.:37:05.

strong and was up against Wilson Kipsang, the former world

:37:06.:37:08.

record-holder for the marathon, for much of the race. But when it came

:37:09.:37:13.

down to his forte, the finish, he did not leave it to a sprint, he

:37:14.:37:17.

pulled away with one kilometre to go and he looked strong and the crowd

:37:18.:37:21.

were delighted to see one of the great champions of the sport coming

:37:22.:37:27.

out on top in 28.08 ahead of Kipsang and McNeil of Australia.

:37:28.:37:33.

And I have Kenenisa and Tirunesh with me. A great run. You looked

:37:34.:37:42.

very happy crossing the line. Yes because after three weeks after

:37:43.:37:47.

London Marathon I run here and I was so happy to come back after two

:37:48.:37:56.

years. I'm very happy to be here with a big crowd here. People here

:37:57.:38:04.

come all the time great people. They love sport and I'm happy to be here.

:38:05.:38:09.

In terms of selection for Rio, you must be disappointed, was this a

:38:10.:38:15.

message to the selectors? Not really, I showed them already

:38:16.:38:20.

before. I don't know why, you know. Of course I'm not happy about it.

:38:21.:38:28.

Maybe they have to select me as a third person. Fingers crossed we

:38:29.:38:35.

will see you in Rio. Tirunesh, you will be speaking through the

:38:36.:38:38.

interpreter, how happy were you with your comeback race?

:38:39.:38:49.

I'm so happy that I have won this race. I was trying to test myself

:38:50.:38:57.

with this Great Manchester Run and it has proved to be very good for

:38:58.:39:04.

me. Will we see you in Rio? I'm going to try the 10000 and hopefully

:39:05.:39:09.

I will make the team. You are both brilliant, thank you very much and

:39:10.:39:10.

we hope to see you both in Rio. Great to see

:39:11.:39:25.

performing well will stop two runs which were contrasting Internet of

:39:26.:39:30.

what they mean but Bekele will hope to be in Rio and we all hope that

:39:31.:39:35.

Tirunesh can get on the track and produce the sorts of times that the

:39:36.:39:41.

selectors cannot ignore. The waves continue. And to mention one group

:39:42.:39:45.

taking part, running in memory of Darren Hibbert. He passed away

:39:46.:40:00.

suddenly on New Year's Day and they would have been his birthday so

:40:01.:40:02.

poignant date for those running in his memory. It is a long wait for a

:40:03.:40:12.

lot of the athletes on Broughton Street but they are continuing to

:40:13.:40:16.

come through. The blue wave is getting underway. A long road ahead

:40:17.:40:23.

of them, the big loop out to Old Trafford and back. The next wave is

:40:24.:40:29.

a bit further down Portland Street. Somewhere between 30 and 40,000

:40:30.:40:34.

runners today. They all have their goals and ambitions. This is the

:40:35.:40:39.

orange wave charging down Deansgate. They will be looking to go under an

:40:40.:40:42.

hour. How much do you want it? They will be looking to go under an

:40:43.:40:48.

much have you got left? Not very much! So many people running for

:40:49.:40:55.

charities and also for their own ambitions and targets. Perhaps they

:40:56.:41:00.

have not run a 10k race at all, perhaps they were not running at all

:41:01.:41:05.

and decided to give it a go. They go out and come back down Chester Road.

:41:06.:41:15.

They will be going for some time to come, I think the last starters go

:41:16.:41:19.

out at about quarter past one so they will be running for some time

:41:20.:41:26.

yet. We saw one of our old pals, Iwan Thomas, before the start. I

:41:27.:41:31.

wonder how he got on. He is with Phil.

:41:32.:41:36.

UN has finished and he is in one piece, how was it? You are saying

:41:37.:41:44.

1-piece! I feel in about ten! It was tough, hot, it is normally colder

:41:45.:41:50.

here. But the people of Manchester, the crowds were amazing and so

:41:51.:41:55.

worthy fellow runners. I went off to fast as always. I was in a bit of

:41:56.:42:00.

pain but the people drags me around. It was a slow time but I'm so proud

:42:01.:42:04.

of everybody who ran. Everybody runs for their own reasons, for

:42:05.:42:08.

charities, for lost loved ones, and people think they might not be fit

:42:09.:42:13.

enough to do an event like this but you can. You can get off the sofa

:42:14.:42:16.

and do some running because it doesn't matter about your shape and

:42:17.:42:21.

size. It is a great event. You were out there with your selfie stick, we

:42:22.:42:25.

talked before the race about the live stream, how did that go?

:42:26.:42:31.

Unfortunately, something went wrong at the beginning! I have recorded

:42:32.:42:34.

the whole thing but I am not sure how much went out live because there

:42:35.:42:40.

was a mouth action -- malfunction. I was speaking to the camera for 47

:42:41.:42:45.

minutes for no reason! People were looking at me a bit strange but I

:42:46.:42:49.

was talking to the camera, not myself! Congratulations. We will

:42:50.:42:54.

hopefully do the streaming thing and it will work next time! Hopefully I

:42:55.:42:58.

won't be a mechanical moron next time! Just to echo the sentiments of

:42:59.:43:06.

Iwan Thomas, there is an amazing atmosphere, lots of music and

:43:07.:43:11.

thousands still streaming through but for many people it is an

:43:12.:43:15.

intense, personal, reflective experience. This is Amanda's story.

:43:16.:43:21.

My name is Amanda Scott and this is my run.

:43:22.:43:26.

I started my running journey in 2009 after my diagnosis of Crohn's

:43:27.:43:36.

disease which resulted in surgery. I ended up in coronary care and six

:43:37.:43:42.

months after coming out I decided that I was going to run the London

:43:43.:43:47.

Marathon. Running benefits my Crohn's disease because it aids a

:43:48.:43:52.

better digestive flow through the whole system that I have left and it

:43:53.:43:58.

also helps with my fatigue and my pain, massively. I have managed to

:43:59.:44:04.

reduce my dependence on morphine and terminal and also helps with Mike

:44:05.:44:11.

chronic fatigue -- tramadol. It helps me to keep a positive outlook

:44:12.:44:17.

on life, helping with the psychological side of the disease

:44:18.:44:19.

because it can be quite debilitating. I feel anything is

:44:20.:44:24.

possible when I go out for a run and when I do my traces it is the little

:44:25.:44:31.

achievement that count for me. -- races. When I'm running, I tend to

:44:32.:44:39.

think of my mum, Leona, who was my best friend and my biggest

:44:40.:44:46.

inspiration. She worked while I was in full-time chemotherapy, she

:44:47.:44:50.

fought with me and she was there in every single surgery I had. Not

:44:51.:44:54.

having her here has been the hardest point in my life. You can never hear

:44:55.:45:04.

her say, I love you, again. When things do get tough, I tend to look

:45:05.:45:07.

up and think of my mum. I things do get tough, I tend to look

:45:08.:45:18.

make my mum proud. Life can be so tough sometimes and it never ceases

:45:19.:45:24.

to amaze me, the inner resources that people find, the inspirational

:45:25.:45:27.

story of Amanda who is out on the course today. Thousands out on the

:45:28.:45:31.

course. Phil Jones has found another finisher. What a performance from

:45:32.:45:38.

Lindsey Russell. I tell you what, barely a bead of sweat on new!

:45:39.:45:48.

I thought I would come out here and give it a go. It has been brilliant.

:45:49.:45:56.

I see you are proudly wearing your blue Peter badge. It has gone wonky!

:45:57.:46:09.

Do you notice the cheers? We have launched our Rio 's 16 badge, it is

:46:10.:46:18.

nice to have the kids cheering. It is important to get the message out

:46:19.:46:25.

and get kids active. It is not about going fast, as I have shown today!

:46:26.:46:30.

Getting to the start line is that hardest thing, but it is not about

:46:31.:46:37.

anything other than that, give it a go and do your best. It is a great

:46:38.:46:42.

message, you are an inspiration. I am so tired! Anyone can take part in

:46:43.:46:49.

the Great Manchester Run, but there is an age limit, you have to be 15

:46:50.:46:55.

years old. I would guess one of the youngest people out there was

:46:56.:46:59.

Brooke, she turned 15 just a few days ago. We caught up with her at

:47:00.:47:01.

band practice. Brooke was born with a birth defect

:47:02.:47:26.

so we were rushed to Manchester to see a consultant there who operated

:47:27.:47:31.

on her when she was 11 days old for life-saving surgery. She has been in

:47:32.:47:39.

and out of hospital all her life. It is the norm for me, I am used to it.

:47:40.:47:46.

I take it as it comes. She had surgery about two years ago. I could

:47:47.:47:53.

not do sport the 12 months. Unfortunately it did not work. It

:47:54.:47:59.

went a bit wrong, I broke screws. Some of the pins that were holding

:48:00.:48:04.

everything together broke. I had it redial and, the 12 months got longer

:48:05.:48:10.

to about two years. Considering how old she is, it was very difficult

:48:11.:48:19.

for her. I used to do triathlons beforehand, so doing stuff like that

:48:20.:48:25.

to nothing has been quite hard. When she had the first knocked back on

:48:26.:48:29.

the surgery, she decided to do a thing on the Internet with her

:48:30.:48:33.

friends and it was called to the forbidden mile. She said to have

:48:34.:48:38.

friends, I cannot run a mile, but if you can, just do a mile and give a

:48:39.:48:45.

few pounds to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. My mum did one,

:48:46.:48:51.

and then I thought I want to do the one my mum is doing. She is adamant

:48:52.:49:01.

she is doing it. This is her way of saying thank you to the raw magister

:49:02.:49:05.

Children's Hospital. It is a wonderful place to be. -- the Royal

:49:06.:49:12.

Manchester Children's Hospital. Mr Bruce will be coming round with me,

:49:13.:49:17.

he has been my surgeon since birth. He will be running with her on her

:49:18.:49:24.

first attempt at a 10K, it is fabulous. Music has not let me down.

:49:25.:49:33.

I could not do sport, but music has always been here. She has put her

:49:34.:49:38.

energy into music, she has channelled her energy in a different

:49:39.:49:42.

way from the sport that she has not been able to do. It is nice to do it

:49:43.:49:47.

with them, it is nice to have something to share together.

:49:48.:49:52.

CHEERING APPLAUSE

:49:53.:50:01.

I am here at the start line with a very colourful family. She stands

:50:02.:50:05.

out. We have just seen your report and what a brave soul you are. How

:50:06.:50:13.

excited are you? I am excited, but I cannot wait to have it over and done

:50:14.:50:17.

with. Your preparation must have been different. I cannot run, I have

:50:18.:50:24.

been walking everywhere and trying as hard as I can. You are really fit

:50:25.:50:32.

then? A little bit. On medical grounds, has says is it for her to

:50:33.:50:39.

be here today? It is a fantastic achievement, however we do it. It is

:50:40.:50:43.

a fantastic achievement. It is inspirational. For yourself, being

:50:44.:50:49.

here, have you done the preparation you need to do? For an athlete like

:50:50.:50:56.

myself... LAUGHTER It is quite a challenge. You have

:50:57.:51:01.

brought your family with you. Who is running with you? Jim is running,

:51:02.:51:11.

Katie, my dad and my mum are running. I hear she is a bit speedy,

:51:12.:51:20.

your mum. I am not sure! A proud moment for you. She always said she

:51:21.:51:26.

would run the magister tempeh and here she is. -- Manchester 10K.

:51:27.:51:38.

Wonderful to see you in all these bright colours. Good luck. Paula has

:51:39.:51:43.

come down from the commentary box to joining. I was just thinking about

:51:44.:51:49.

when you sit and commentate and watch a mass participation race like

:51:50.:51:54.

this, how does it make you feel. No one goes out and does a mass

:51:55.:51:58.

participation triple jump, how does it make you feel? You are part of a

:51:59.:52:04.

family of runners. Whether you are racing temporal matters or a

:52:05.:52:08.

marathon distance, you become part of the family. -- racing Hahn

:52:09.:52:14.

kilometres. Everyone will have gone through difficult points. That is

:52:15.:52:21.

what is great, the camaraderie and the sharing that you get out there.

:52:22.:52:27.

Just what ever problems we have, the athletics at the top level, that is

:52:28.:52:32.

not happening here, running is something special. It is bringing

:52:33.:52:35.

people together to make a big difference. What else amazes me is

:52:36.:52:43.

people run quite quickly. Yes, they run quickly and they are holding

:52:44.:52:48.

down full-time jobs. We had it easy as elite athletes, it is your

:52:49.:52:53.

full-time job to train. A lot of people have busy family lives,

:52:54.:52:56.

full-time jobs, fitting training around that and coming here and

:52:57.:53:00.

running personal best and running quick times. It is wonderful to see

:53:01.:53:06.

that Laois on. Let's talk about the men's and women's elite races. -- it

:53:07.:53:16.

is wonderful to see that. Tirunesh Dibaba is still a great distance

:53:17.:53:20.

runner. She maybe has a little bit to go. We talked about that in the

:53:21.:53:25.

commentary. The definition in her body is in quite there from the

:53:26.:53:28.

miles in the bank and all the training, but that will come

:53:29.:53:30.

quickly. The racing training, but that will come

:53:31.:53:34.

still there. She wanted to come out and run a reasonably quick time and

:53:35.:53:39.

dominate the race and win well and she did that. In terms of going to

:53:40.:53:43.

reopen and getting a third gold medal, is that beyond her? I would

:53:44.:53:49.

never say it is beyond her, it is tough, if she was British, she would

:53:50.:53:54.

probably be walking onto the team, but in Ethiopian there are a lot of

:53:55.:54:01.

strong women. It is not maybe as strong as the men's team, she could

:54:02.:54:07.

do it, but she needs to find a 10,000 metre race and then run quick

:54:08.:54:11.

enough to cement her place in there. A quick word on Kenenisa Bekele,

:54:12.:54:19.

none of the European is finished in 2012 in the marathon. They do not

:54:20.:54:22.

have a history strongest champion team to the team.

:54:23.:54:30.

They have named reserves and actually picked them later. It

:54:31.:54:35.

happened with Kenenisa Bekele in 2008, she was named as a reserve and

:54:36.:54:37.

then he did run on the team. He has 2008, she was named as a reserve and

:54:38.:54:42.

a good chance of running on the team, that is what he is racing

:54:43.:54:47.

towards. We would love to see him race on the track. It would be an

:54:48.:54:51.

interesting prospect against race on the track. It would be an

:54:52.:54:55.

Farah. With his injury problems, he does not want to risk racing on the

:54:56.:55:00.

track. Thank you for the moment. We will head back out to the finish

:55:01.:55:07.

with Phil Jones. Coronation Street always do the Great Manchester Run

:55:08.:55:18.

proud. How did you find it? It made me really proud to be part of

:55:19.:55:24.

Manchester. All the people who are cheering you on. It feels really

:55:25.:55:29.

good to be part of Manchester. Is it something you would recommend to

:55:30.:55:35.

people watching? Absolutely, if I can do it, anyone can. How did you

:55:36.:55:41.

find it physically today? I was exhausted, I can barely breathe, I

:55:42.:55:45.

need a lie down, but it was worth it. Have a lie down and have a

:55:46.:55:52.

drink. I would love to come again. Thanks.

:55:53.:55:56.

get out there and do a bit of running and join us here next year.

:55:57.:57:10.

The runners keep on starting and they keep on finishing here, but we

:57:11.:57:15.

are just about done on the BBC. Just time to tell you there is more sport

:57:16.:57:18.

coming up over the course of this afternoon.

:57:19.:57:39.

That is it from the Great Manchester Run. What a great celebration of

:57:40.:57:47.

sport it has been. We have seen two of the greats, Tirunesh Dibaba and

:57:48.:57:51.

Kenenisa Bekele showing that they have not lost any form. It is a half

:57:52.:57:56.

marathon next year, get your entries in and we will see you here.

:57:57.:58:01.

Goodbye. I always feel that anything is possible when I go out for a run.

:58:02.:58:08.

Mentally it challenges you. The word I can't is stuck in your head. If I

:58:09.:58:24.

can do it, anyone can. I run to make my mum proud.

:58:25.:58:45.

BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend is coming to your place,

:58:46.:59:12.

with Mumford And Sons, Ellie Goulding,
