-It's not easy to achieve.

-You must hate targets.

-Targets seem to be set in

-every aspect of life these days.

-People must be realistic.

-You do have to be reasonable.

-However, athletes are very used

-to being set certain targets.

-The problem arises when people...

-..directly connect investment

-with those targets.

-The sporting world can never be

-treated with that kind of certainty.

-You can perform very well

-and not win a medal.

-Losing funding on

-those terms is difficult.

-Athletes are generally comfortable

-with being set targets.

-How much success are you

-There are some familiar names

-competing in Rio.

-Are there new names

-that might break through?

-It's hard to tell right now.

-We are in the period where athletes

-are trying to pre-qualify.

-Names like Geraint Thomas, Jazz

-Carlin and Aled Sion are up there.

-There might be a few names

-that reappear like Jade Jones.

-There won't be many new names.

-The big stars will shine this year.

-It might be a big year

-for the Welsh women.

-Why do you say that?

-Some of the results in the

-Commonwealth Games up in Glasgow.

-some negative headlines right now.

-What is your role with the athletes?

-Do you counsel and ensure

-that everything is above board?

-There are two parts

-to that question.

-We try to advise our athletes on the

-dos and dont's with the drug issues.

-The part of it

-involves the governing body.

-That's the tough part.

-We work with that governing body...

-..to make sure the structure

-and the coaching is right.

-We try to make sure that the

-governing is done right...

-..so there aren't

-the kinds of issues...

-..that have cropped up recently

-with FIFA and the IAAF.

-That work has gone on for years

-and we're in a good place.

-Things can go wrong. We saw it with

-Gareth Warburton and Rhys Williams.

-It must be a difficult task

-for you and for the athletes.

-Education is crucial

-in the whole thing.

-There can be too much emphasis

-on supplements with young athletes.

-You can succeed on the highest level

-with just the perfect diet.

-We work with the governing body

-and the parents...

-..on the education of our athletes.

-We have to ensure

-they don't make mistakes.

-We have to do that.

-It certainly is.

-I was reading your blog and

-something has changed here.

-Back in 2004,

-at the Athens Olympics...

-..the swimmer, David Davies was the

-only Welsh athlete to win a medal.

-The expectations

-have changed entirely.

-That hasn't happened by accident.

-Funding from the National Lottery

-and the Welsh Government has helped.

-We spend more on the elite level.

-Winning medals

-really does cost money.

-Investing in athletes

-isn't a one year project.

-The Welsh Women Gymnasts won a team

-bronze at the Commonwealth Games.

-That was Wales' first

-ever medal in that event.

-It was the culmination

-of a ten-year project.

-It costs a lot of money

-and the funds are there now.

-The public wants

-this success so badly.

-We're trying to supply it.

-I'm pleased the British system

-has also changed.

-We play an important role

-in that system now.

-I don't want to frighten you but

-you've been involved for 20 years.

-You started out in 1996,

-had a break and came back.

-The changes over those

-twenty years must be amazing.

-If you've been here all along

-the changes aren't as evident.

-British cycling is manned by coaches

-and scientists who started here.

-They come back and look at the

-improvements and say they might...

-..never have left had the current

-facilities had been here then.

-It's down to the funding from the

-lottery and the Welsh Government.

-I hope it carries on. It has to.

-To get more success in the future

-we have to invest in it right now.

-Sport Wales is to him.

-Sport Wales have helped me a lot.

-I train there very day and also get

-soft tissue treatment and physio.

-They offer everyone a platform so

-they can do everything possible...

-..as we go into 2016.

-Hopefully, Welsh athletes

-can grab places in the GB squad.

-What about this year?

-How are the preparations going

-for Rio later in the year?

-I can't believe we are in 2016.

-London 2012 feels like yesterday!

-It has come round so quickly.

-Preparations are going very well.

-I just want to make sure

-I don't get any type of injury.

-I just need to keep fit.

-It will be a long year.

-A lot has to be done

-before we go out to Rio.

-I want to go there and put on

-a great performance.

-I've never performed at the top

-of my game at an Olympic Games.

-That's what I aim to do this year.

-If I can do that, I will bring a

-medal of the right colour back home.

-You mention the balancing act.

-You want to push yourself in

-training without getting injured.

-How difficult is it

-to keep the balance...

-..so you get to Rio

-in tip-top condition?

-It's tough because I always

-want to improve.

-I know there are athletes out there

-who want to beat me.

-I almost lost the gold medal

-out in Doha.

-I must ensure that the gap between

-me and second place is huge.

-I have a lot of hard work to do

-but I also have to be careful.

-Sometimes, I have a habit of pushing

-myself too hard and getting injured.

-I hope I've got everything

-out of my system now.

-I've learnt to think about

-what I'm doing...

-..and do what's right for me.

-who will be second to you.

-You are full of confidence.
