Day 4 Darts: World Championships - Extra

Hello, welcome to your late night highlights from day four of the BDO

world darts championship. Tuesday saw us complete the line-up for the

last 16. We start with a Belgian who has never failed to plog to the

second round. If Geert De Vos was to keep the impressive round going, he

has to beat the only Greek to win a match here. Let's Joan our

commentators. Scott Waites, awaits. In the next

round. But is it going to be Belgium... Or is it going to be

Greece? 55 consecutive experience, yet to go

past the second round. Yeah. Four times he's been here before, Geert

De Vos. And he's won one and lost one on each occasion. He's gone out

to the eventual champion three times. Yes, good player. Some good

players Belgium. And Eric the last Belgian to reach the quarterfinals.

A while ago now. Two Victoria tris needed to reach the last --

victories needed to reach the last eight. A guy called John Michaels

was the only previous Greek to play at Lakeside. Well done if you

remember 2014, and the preliminary round defeat to Madars Razma. Well,

De Vos really getting us under way, already on a finish of 141. Here we

go. Let's see how the finishing goes.

Ous start from Pantelidis. Yeah, it's not easy really, is it? Make

your debut like that. Treble 20. Double six. Double 16 the shot.

Well, he could afford to split them, couldn't he? Still too far for

Pantelidis. Kind of nice for Pantelidis to be

able to play his way into the match. A double eight. Winning the first

leg. As far as Pantelidis is concerned, only a leg with the

darts. So he would have expected, I guess, to lose that one. He wants to

start finding the treble 20. Half an hour or so ago, he couldn't have

appeared more relaxed. I chatted to him before his debut, he just about

beat Darren Peetoom, from Essex, in the pre-law round. He won it Swiss

his ninth match dart, and I went and talked to him before that, and he

appeared nervous and didn't want me to talk to him. I chatted to him

jufs this evening, and he said, wish you would have stuck around, have a

chat." I really want to enjoy myself on this stage. He wants to emulate

Jeff Smith, and play his best darts on the big stage. Easier said than

done, mind you. Jeff Smith is looking like a winner. I was very

pleased with his play in the last championship. Jewellery designer

from Athens, Pantelidis. He said playing on that stage, genuinely, is

a dream come true. Let's wish him the best of luck. And hopefully he

doesn't let himself down. It's not easy, but the favourite, without a

shadow of a doubt, is De Vos. Down Mexico away... Pantelidis on a

finish though. 116. Treble 19 for tops. Twebl 18 would

have left double 12. To nick the throw then, De Vos.

OK, Pantelidis... 20 double top. Double top. First darts in his way.

He can do this in two darts if he hits the treble 20 with his first.

Treble 17... For double 18, but nope. Costas has another chance. To

get on the board in this match. Just to move across the oche. Double 5.

There! It's the double. He'll hope he can

settle into the match now. He was the more nervous than he told me he

would be, during that first leg. This match is live in Greece and he

says his victory a couple of nights ago has caused a bit of a stir.

Constant phone calls, constant texts. His phone is in meltdown. Are

you serious? Yeah. Have you been the Greek? I am Greek. He doesn't speak

great English. We were having a chat in Greek. I couldn't be more wrong

with him. He does want to chat, tell us all about himself, how much he

loves darts, what he's been through to get here. He's got a board at

home, he insisted on it, practices every single day, getting around,

getting the ranking points he needs to be here. De Vos leads double top.

He is back again! Good fun in this match.

When he first came to Lakeside, supporting Geert De Vos, in 2012, we

sort of assumed that he was a Geert De Vos's dad. But he's not. He is

just a fan. He is cost as's best mate. He travelled with him to be

here, travelled from Athens to be here with him. They practise

together. I'm loving this. You know everybody!

Tell you what - it's not a bad match either. A slight look of concern on

his face. He knows that Pantelidis must hold here. To extend this set.

The first to three sets through to the second round. Each set the first

to three legs. He will be back with double 18 for

the set. Pantelidis to try and pressure the throw. He does that.

Double 18. Double 9. Yes! Quick first set. First to De Vos.

He is back. Right into the treble. Already one set past costas. He

wants to stamp his authority on this match, doesn't he, Geert De Vos

exhe's the eighth seed this year. Third time he comes to Lakeside as a

seed, and that's the highest he's been. Previously, the 14th and 11th

seed. Yes, another one! Another one! A

turn on two-one. Putting pressure on the Pantelidis throw early in this

second set. Well, they are enjoying this. His

first match of the evening. He needs another. Costas well

behind. Just wants to rediscover his rhythm. Experience here. Double top.

There it is. And that's a 13-dart leg from Geert De Vos.

, someone is going oget left out in a minute. He looks bang on form.

There it is, the first maximum of the night. Jackie loves it, they all

love it here. Oh, dear. What a start to the evening.

Absolutely fantastic. 118. 114... Six darts down. When he starts

skorg, Geert De Vos, he can't half score. He won a match with an

average of 114. T at one point, he was on course to break the world

record average, which is, as I'm sure you all know, 118.66.

He needs this. Two treble 20s in the bowl. Treble 20, double top. Treble

16... Already has a feel of a must-get

about it, this. Geert, it's all yours. Double eight.

Off the barrel. Yes, he's done it. Nearly fell down! You know, Jackie

is like a commentator who starts too high. Where do you go from that

celebration? What happens when he wins the match? Looks like he is

going to, as well, the way he's playing. It's magnificent. Aileen De

Graaf, smiling away, enjoying herself.

Well you throw the next time, just have a look at the way his hand

comes down. Kostas, is this? Yeah. Very sure. Take a look. He is not

messing about, Geert De Vos, though. OK, Shanghai. What will it be this

time? Kostas coming back for 114. Two treble 20s. Oh... 12 double 16

or four for tops. 15 double eight now, having missed the big four.

Chance for Pantelidis. Double 14. Had your chance. First

time he's had a dart at a double since the second leg of the match.

Straight into the treble once again. If ever a player needed a break, it

was Kostas Pantelidis. What he'll say to himself, and said to himself

backstage, just produce your best dart, if only for another few legs,

if you're going to lose, lose with a bit of pride. He started well,

because he kicked off with a long 40. Not letting go.

Just to let you know, it's the best of three sets. So Geert De Vos won

the first set 3-1, missed a few doubles, a bit more of a scrap in

the second set, in the second set, he found another gear. Averaging 96

in that second set. Theage with his first -- the average with his first

nine darts was near on 109. Yeah, good return there. Swifd the 19s. He

left a finish of 117. Unlike De Vos, who left 165. This would be

something lovely to take back to Athens with him, if he's heading

happened. And we do frequently see it, Tony, don't we - in this

matches, where there's a break after two sets, the guy who is struggling

comes back and throws an awful lot better. Yeah, nothing to lose after

a break. Thinking, well, let's just get on with it, and you throw better

darts. I asked him about the Robbo nickname, Pantelidis. And it's

because he throws quickly. He told me.

There is Brian Dawson, playing later tonight. Interesting story with his

shirt, his lucky shirt. It's got holes in it. Because he ironed it.

And left the iron on too long, got distracted, so it's a holy lucky

shirt. Well, Kostas wants to make a hole in this. 161.

So 120, Shanghai. Because... At the moment, not taking much out of

197... That's the hard bit. That's the easy bit. Oh! Unlucky. OK.

Treble 20. No, he's gone for 16s. Tops now. Good thinking.

Double ten. This is for a 2-0 nil in the third set.

Alright Geert, you're in a match! Where did that one go? That's the

double. Squeezed into the corner, didn't he?

But the suddenly... He is speeding up. He found some darts.

271 for Pantelidis. It could be a 180 shot here. That's 180 as well.

He is cross with himself. Good leg to go for Geert. Nine darts for...

Yeah, bird in heaven. 103 left. Must leave a finish and does. So 19s to

start. Ten for double 18, six for tops. He missed that three times in

a row, this set. Come on, Kostas! 124. Treble 18. You have got to bull

to hit. Oh, unlucky. Double top. And he fell over. Oh,

double 19. He's still in it, Kostas. Theory cheering him on -- they're

cheering him on. Yes! ! That is the set for Kostas Pantelidis! As Geert

De Vos starts wobbling on his doubles. Six missed doubles in that

set for De Vos. He had chances to win every leg. Didn't take them. I

think they are loving it out there. All standing up and cheering him.

They all like a hundred odd, I tell you. Well, especially the way he

started. Everyone kind of felt for him. But he's won a set now. And he

showed that that preliminary round match against Darren Peetoom, that

he's a bit of a scrapper, Pantelidis. It may have taken him

nine match darts to win, but he did win, 5-3 in a deciding set. That

shows a bit of nerve. You're right. Looks like Geert needs the nerve

here. A treble and another treble. Is it another treble? Well in this

leg, two 140s and a tonne. 121 left. Back comes Kostas. He already found

one treble 20 with 12 darts. So De Vos will be mightily disappointed if

he doesn't win this leg. He can do it a bull's-eye, but chooses not

too, slightly disappointingly. It's brilliant, this. Double top coming

in. For the leg. I don't know why he keeps persisting in leaving double

top. He is not hitting it. Hitting the double ten. Come on, Jackie.

He has only hit two from ten, at double top, and missed his last

seven at it. Battling away. He is. A marathon

Olympics round match, but Pantelidis didn't manage to register a maximum

180. I know he is wants one. A fraction away. Look that. Either

side of the wire. Treble 20. Three good darts for 38, weren't they?

Steady tonnes coming in now from Geert. Yes, he is not giving in. No,

he needed that as well. He is two legs away from going out.

76 left. He needs to find a way to break the though as well,

Pantelidis. He can't finish on this, can he though? 76 then, to move to

within a leg. 16 for that tops. He missed seven times in a row, make

that eight times in a row. It can be done. Treble 19, double 19, unlucky.

Could be a double top. Still not hit it.

Right, it's now or never time for Pantelidis. Yes, or it's curtains.

Just one leg will do it. For De Vos. He just can't capitalise on that

change of momentum. It was an appall palling dart. That stuck right in

the top. Oh, yes, great marker. Yes... Here

we go. 183... So Pantelidis must leave a finish. Otherwise... He has

done. Well, he has. How much can De Vos take out of 183. Plenty! Treble

14... Maybe the last, the last chance saloon. Never happened.

Ten for tops. Forget De Vos, for the match, for a place in round two! He

has done it. He's won his first round match every year he's been

here, at once again, it didn't quite happen for Pantelidis, but De Vos

was boss. England's number seven Zoe Jones is known sometimes as the pink

pan they are, she found herself up against the all-black every to

appear. Tina Osborne making the long journey from Auckland. Would that

trip prove fruitful. Here is Tina Osborne, the first Kiwi woman to

take part in these Lakeside championships. Greg in the men's

event played really as well, and pushed the defending champion Scott

Mitchell all the way. Maybe Tina will be inspired by his example.

That's a night start from Zoe Jones. Nice dart from both players. Not

much evidence of nerves up there at the moment.

She looked really good, didn't she, in her first-round win over Paula

Jacklin, did Lisa. But those are mighty short odds before a dart it

thrown in the quarterfinals. Partly by virtue of the fact that were

expected to be her principal rivals, they have both been eliminated. She

appears to have a smoother passage than anticipated. Others will have

ideas of their own, including this two women. So to take the opening

leg of the match, the first to two sets through to the quarterfinals -

so she went for treble 14. Hit a single 11. Can't finish but she'll

be back. The first to two sets, each set a race to three legs.

Solid tonne. So tops for Osborne to have the first tangible success in

the opening leg of the match with the throw. She would feel a lot

better when she pockets this one and there it is.

They didn't have to wait long to be up and on their feet and cheering

the Lakeside crowd. The pink panther biting back. Worcestershire county

player, Zoe. Lost in the quarterfinals last year. And stung

into action by losing that opening leg, maybe.

That's her brother Matt, very smart this evening, shirt and tie,

offering support. He is nicely turned out. Perhaps knew he was

going on to be camera. In case you were wondering, we are both dressed

in black tie in the commentary box. We like to do things properly.

Old-school is the only way. You're wearing your tux for the finals?

White tie and tails. Jones nicely placed to make an

immediate riposte here. That's a good dart. Double 16, brilliant. How

about that for a bit of confidence, a bit of swagger with it? A 14-dart

leg from Zoe Jones. Nicely done. Tell you what, that 180 from Zoe,

seems to have rattled Tina Osborne. The manner of that checkout would

certainly impress anybody. It was so positive, wasn't it? Bang, bang.

Yeah, it really was. This again! Unlucky!

Early days, but she is averaging over 92, zones zones zones -- Zoe

Jones. So six darts from 190 to break the

throw for Zoe Jones. Two treble 20s and double five would

have been the way. Treble 20 leads the bull's-eye now. Look of disgust

that she missed it. There's a bit of an Elvis sneer, that one. Yeah.

Not pleased again now. Osborne 115. She made fairly pedestrian progress,

down with the numbers here. 21 darts already. Treble 20 would leave

double 18. Jones again, for a leg against the darts. Two it 16, two

eight, a tiny adjustment. Finding it hard work! Double top.

Still no. She hit it first time in the last leg, but missed this three

times. Make that four. Make that five.

There! Did well to squeeze that one, and kissed in off the barrel, as

you'll see. Good dart. Squeezing that in. And a good take of a leg

against the throw and now looking to serve it out for the first set.

Remember, first to two sets in the women's competition gets through

into the next round. The winner of this one to play

Ann-Louise Peters. She had the shock victory over Sherrock. A lot of fans

supporting both players. That is Hannah, Zoe's fiance.

And hearing that you may be surprised to read that "I love you

Lilly" sign. That is her niece, Lilly.

It's not certain was was required, trying to reset herself, trying to

refocus. Straight into treble 20. You may

remember from last year with Zoe, when the darts throw, they do flow.

Just 23 years old, Worcestershire county player and England

international. Made he debut a couple of years ago, and in a fairly

strong position here in this opening set. 104 when she returns. Time on

her side. Treble 18 for double 16. How unlucky is that?

Bet she couldn't do that again. She would clean up on the exhibition

circuit if she could do that on demand. 84 to take the set. That

will do for tops. Doesn't matter. She'll be back. Tina left 166.

Well... Is Osborne going to be able to claw her way back here. Double

18. Oh! That is going to hurt Zoe. She paid the penalty for some pretty

indifferent attempted finishing. Decent scrap this, isn't it? Yep,

certainly is. Osborne not just lying down.

So this is the deciding leg in the first sest. -- set.

And you hardly need me to tell you, in a race to two sets, absolutely

key. So far so good for Osborne. She's

holding it together, isn't she? Zoe Jones had that purple patch, but

just for a moment, it's going off the ball. I think for her, a purple

patch is a pink patch. In the pink! The Pink Panther. Whatever, she

could do with a big hit now. It's unlucky again. Seems to be

having her fair share of bounceouts. Tina Osborne for the second leg in a

row has left a bogey number. 169, not possible in three darts.

So this is for the set. Treble 18 for bull's-eye. Yes, she's got a

dart for bull's-eye, for the set. Very much in control of things

there. Now, 141, can't do it. So Osborne will come back, looking for

49 to take the opening set. Tina's friend looks on. Double 16 she's

left. Two 16s again. Missed it three

times. Missed it four times. Now needs double 12. Tension... Creeping

into the throw. 38. Double 16. Double eight... And she's taken it!

And celebrates. Looks as though for all the world slipping away there,

but Tina Osborne couldn't make the most of her opportunities and Zoe

takes the first set. Well, they both missed six darts for

that opening set. Before Zoe finally wrapped it up with a budget 8. --

with a double 8. Martin Atkins, one of the players

watching on, on the right-hand side of your picture there. He looks

smartly turned out as well, doesn't he? He does. Slightly concerned that

you expect some of the people to show up that they have fallen out of

a hedge. People do make an effort when they go out. You have been here

before, haven't you, John? Absolutely. Now that's a shirt.

Joshua Richardson, the comedian. -- John Richardson, the comedian. He

was involved the let's play darts for Sports Relief, to be broadcast

in March. Jones in a nice position, 118. Treble 17 would have left the

bull's-eye. So Jones coming back, looking for of

64. Double top. No checkout though for

Osborne. The double stats are not good for either player. And again,

she's left herself on 169. Will be on a finish when she comes back.

Will it be too, too late? Went for the bull's-eye. , so again, Zoe

Jones looking for tops. Treble 12. All the 20s now. She

missed big 20. Ouch! Will she pay the price? Surely... Zoe is

consistent... And consistently high. Eight missed darts at double top in

this leg from Zoe Jones. That is how to do it! Right into the geometric

centre. Joe will be furious with herself for that. She was way, way

clear. All she needed to do was the find the double, but eight times she

missed. She looks a little bit sorry for herself here. Naught from nine

for double top for Zoe Jones. Including those eight misses in a

row. She was high every time. Well, not a lot between them in

terms of averages now. Pretty level, the checkout percentages are pretty

awful on either side. The averages are average. And the sets are the

ones that matters and Zoe managed thescape home. They both can do an

awful lot better. Osborne with the break of throw in the opening leg of

this set. Will she come away? She does. That one looked a bit of

fragile from the way it was hanging. Good dart. Good response. Down to a

finish. Horrible dart. That wasn't much better.

So, 135, Osborne. May choose to go the bull route...

55 remaining. That's the 15 to leave tops.

No, can't now be done. So for 2-0... On the double top to win the opening

leg. Oh, dear that's almost missed the board.

Nicely done. As was that. A double top.

And in a place now to square the match. If she doesn't win this leg,

she'll have the throw and the one to follow. And really, should be

looking to now make it one apiece in sets.

So Zoe's brother continuing to shout his encouragement.

Nice! Usual array of dodgy headwear and fancy dress around a very good

crowd for this evening session. Good last dart. A lot of pressure on

this one now. Went for the bull's-eye. So treble 19 now...

Bell, that was unusual, you might say. Craig Caldwell watching on.

Tops. Greg Caldwell, fellow New Zealander,

watching Tina Osborne. Double four. So Craig Caldwell watches on. Perry

watches on. Tina Osborne takes aim at the double ten for the set. And

finds it! We And Tina Osborne, as you hear, with

the darts. Initiative lost by Zoe Jones. And those doubles have hurt

her. Only three out of 25. That's poor.

Only difference in this leg, is if it goes to two legs apiece, then we

are into a sudden death deciding leg. They'll bully up to see who

goes first. That's a while away yet. Yes, I was

going to say, a few twists and turns before we get to that stage. Saw her

brother again. Matt. Osborne has seven ranking titles to

her name. Her Lakeside debut, and if she eliminates one of the seeds,

that would be some performance. That's a really good visit from

Jones. She could nick this leg against the darts, life would feel a

whole lot better. Surprised she didn't twitch away from the 20s

there. Zoe reached two finals on the BDO

circuit last year, and lost the Germany, to Stanley, and lost the

international Open final to Hedman. So 148. This would be against the

throw. That's no good. But the two darts that followed were and she's

nicely placed now. Pressure on this. Can't be taken out so two 18s for

Zoe Jones. For what could be a crucial break of throw.

Nines now. That is a significant breakthrough.

Her first successful double in 11 attempts. And just look at what one

dart can make to the whole psyche. She stands up and does that. Good

response though. A little unlucky it's only a hundred. Jones with the

darts. And throwing impressively and

consistently now when she needs to. Will Osborne crack?

Big advantage now for Zoe Jones in this leg. It's unlucky again. So

close to being 140, that one. Looked as though they were all in.

10 was just a bounceout away. This would be nice. But it's not crucial.

With Osborne back on 260. Big score kas almost imperative,

working away along the oche and not finding where she needed to be.

Double top for another. She doesn't hit double top. 220. All she can do

is try to put some pressure on the ten remaining. For Zoe Jones. Assume

she'll go straight at it. Double 2 against elusive. Four

doubles out of 32, Jones. No, doesn't find the treble with her

sect dart, so can't now -- with her second dart, so can't now finish.

Zoe Jones trying to settle in nerves. But not that!

She only needs to to find one more double.

Averaging over 90 is Zoe Jones, with her first nine darts. But as you

would expect with her checkout percentage so low, her overall

average is not good. That's impressive from Osborne.

She's not just lying down. She's got to take this leg, otherwise it's all

over. That was Peter, the Swede, watching

on in the raiseded tier of seats. On with convenience convenience, who

played as well -- with Veenstra, who played well yesterday. Good player.

Veenstra, who played Osborne the favourite to hold her

throw. Going to come down to doubles again. Nothing between them in terms

of scoring. So there is pressure on this 124.

Treble 14 would have left double 11. That leaves the bull. That wasn't

far away. Match point for Zoe Jones. For the match.

Oh, she's gone treble six. That is a loose one. She can't do it.

Single nine. Double eight. To stay in this championship. Double four.

No. Over to you, Zoe. She can't believe it. Nervous darts from Zoe

Jones on the last visit. A little sip of water and now 46 to take her

place in the next round. Double 18. She's got it! It was an awful

struggle for her today, played in very nice spirit between the two of

them as they embrace and Zoe Jones, who had awful difficulties with the

doubles, right the way through, finally gets the one that counts and

she's beaten the New Zealander, Tina Osborne, through to the next round,

by two sets to one. Deta Hedman has come so close to winning the women's

world championship, not once but twice. Make she felt that 2016 would

be her year. She was up against Corrine Hammond, coming all the way

from Australia. Can she keep the nerves under control on the biggest

stage of all? Wonder if those early nerves having

replaced by excitement, anticipation, expectation,

enjoyment? On the biggest stage against one of

the biggest names as well. We saw you...

LAUGHS I wonder if she was meant to be at

work. Listen, you'll only get caught if the boss is watching darts.

Well, we see various outfits at the Lakeside, how about a pair of

So the deciding leg of this first set... Speaking of being spotted in

the audience when perhaps you should be elsewhere, a few years ago, I was

watching a televised darts event, I should have been interviewing a

rugby league coach. I was there, wearing a Phil Taylor it. Shirt, and

the coach texted me, who I was supposed to be interviewing. Who was

he? It was Tony Smith, at the time, the former Leeds rhinos team. He

said, "That's where you have gone today, is it, George?" ? Hands up, I

said. He does love the darts, actually. Australian himself. Now

British citizen, in fact. So I don't know who he'll be supporting here.

This is nice. But Hammond, first to a finish. And

a decent one as well, 116. Twice we've seen her come within a whisker

of taking a three-figure checkout. This would be lovely for the set.

There it is. Double tops she needs for the set, for a 116.

Well, she needs to take this out. Great start. Another one of those...

Is that it? That leaves double 14! Oh, so... This as proper darts match

now. Two 10s for the set. Oh, no. Straight into the double 15. No, no,

no. Double seven. This will feel like a steal for Deta. That's

champion class! That's the kind of nerve that has

won 91 ranking tightlings. She needs to forget but that,

straightaway. Corrine Hammond started playing some good stuff. And

that could, perhaps should, have been her set.

So how is Corrine Hammond going to respond to that? Gave away the first

couple of legs in the match, really. Then settled down.

LAUGHS Require those outfits the first

couple of days here. Absolutely tipping it down.

Slightly more picturesque scene from the green, the last 48 hours or so.

I think rain stopped play at the dars. Yeah, the leaking roof, wasn't

it? Good leg for Hammond against the

throw. A good visit from Hedman though, as well.

Looking to set up a decent finish. Credit to Corrine Hammond, it's so

easy not to settle on that stage. You've never been here before, she's

come all the way from Newcastle, New South Wales... Knowing that she's

playing the great Deta Hedman in her first round match. She didn't

settle. He looked a bag of nerves in the first couple of legs. Look at

this, treble 19, double 12, for 141... She keeps coming close,

doesn't she! ? Everyone was willing her to finish that one off.

So no finish for Deta. Hammond will be back. For double 12. Three darts

at double 12 for a break of throw. First leg, second set.

Just an inch below that. Oh, no. It's the finishing that's been the

problem. 13%, two out of 15 for Hammond. Brilliant. That's a hold.

But that will feel like a break of throw.

And just that coincidence, the double 12 that Deta hit, having

watched Corinne miss it four times in a row for that leg, it just must

feel like a, well, a dart to the heart: On the percentages there,

that is why Hammond Upwards of 70 for Hammond.

Marginally higher for Deta Hedman, with darts like that, there we are.

Well, the fact that Hammond's average is in the 70s, already,

after the first two legs, extraordinary. And speaking of

extraordinary, how about some of that! A maximum to get the Lakeside

rocking. , it's the first wave of the 1180 signs of this contest.

Well, this is for a 12-dart leg. Treble 20 for double 18. Didn't miss

to be fair, has thrown some fantastic darts, just really

struggled with her finishing. One in 17 of her last attempted

her. Steady tonne from Deta. It's not far

away now. Needs a big score here, Corinne! And gets one! Another

maximum from the Aussie! Very timely. What kind of response

from Hedman? Well, she's on a finish, Deta. But 92 looks a lot

nicer than 134. She's gone bull, ten, double 16 to stay alive.

Emphatic! Corrine Hammond will reflect on a wastepaper basket full

of missed doubles. For Deta Hedman, it's another Lakeside quarterfinal.

Dutchman Wesley Harms is absolutely class when he gets it right. He's a

two-time world championship-semi-finalists. He kick

started his campaign in 2016 with a meeting with Japan's finest, Seigo

Asada, himself back for a second crack at the big time.

Been looking forward to this one. If Asada can reproduce the form that

saw him beat Labanauskas, we could be in for an intriguing contest. A

handy start from Harms. Look A few people feel that Wesley Harms

has under achieved. She's got so much talent. First two years in the

Lakeside, a good response from Asada. First two times he played

here, he got to the semi-finals. Both times, incidentally, being

undone by one Tony O'Shea. 2012 and 2013, beaten by Tony

O'Shea. On the big stage, was Wesley Harms, and he will admit he's not

done himself justice since. But a promising start this year. A

promising start from both lads. Harms is on a finish. Asada needs a

good score. Could do with a treble here. He's found it.

Excellent start from both players. 14 would be the shot.

So Asada, 87 required. Sometimes has unusual ways of going for things.

Treble 17, you would an. Well, 20 would leave bull. And treble would

leave double 5. Double 5 Harms was fearing the worst. As it

is, he has got double six to pinch the leg against the darts. Moves

The referees, incidentally, a funny sort of bunch, sometimes. They are

having a competition as the who can call the first 174. If you hear one,

said with considerable relish, you may know why.

Nothing more complicated than just liking saying "174". Brilliant

finish, first set, Harms! Nice look to it, this match. And

look how charged up Wesley Harms is. He wants it big-time.

The winner of this one plays Jim Williams in the next round. The

Welshman that put out Tony O'Shea in this first round match. Not going to

say anything about Tony O'Shea tonight. Given that they throttled

me in the commentary box, live on air, last night. Always liked him.

Talking of people who stay busy... Tony O'Shea and Darryl Fitton do so

many exhibitions around the country. Always very popular double act.

Well, the scoring is decent. Averages north of 90 for both

players so far. Harms with the darts. Nice position.

Those are the averages. Showing a pretty decent standard.

Anything over the 90-mark, not bad. When you start getting over the 100

or thereabouts, it's exceptional. There is Yolanda again, Wesley

Harms's girlfriend. Double 18. He'll be back for double

nine. Asada just looking to set something up, just in case. And

here's hoping there is an error. He's got a chance, maybe... Oh,

dear, dear, dear. He can't check it out. He wanted the big one, staying

away from the treble. He makes a bit of a hash of it. Can Well, this

would be a big blow from Seigo. Oh, he needed 18, double 16, and he

missed the big 18. So 14s baby. Yep. Double two. Double one for the first

leg of this second set. It's not a bad marker, surely, now. Well, he's

really left the door open for the ninja here. Double 8. Double 4, must

be! Is! He ended up on double one twice,

Wesley. Is double, only three converted. -- 12 double, only three

converted. Overall favourite for this event, people may be interested

to know, is Glen Durrant. He got Waites after a very impressive

opening performance, and the defending champion, Scott Mitchell,

6-1. Zoe Jones and her whole family of

Panthers? I wonder if they are all from red

yich. That's the Pink Panther layer. Is that the breeding ground of Pink

Panthers? The Asada throw under pressure.

Harms poised to make the perfect response. So treble 20 would leave

double 15. It's erratic again from Sparky. Asada, 128. Treble 20 would

have good enough. Now a bull's-eye. Oh, it was near!

What an effort that would have been. Double six for Harms. Way off. The

pause, the adjustment inside the six. Double three, down the bottom.

And he began as the doubles fox. Asada now has double eight, double

eight to go 2-0 ahead. Well, the scoring has been decent,

the doubles haven't. It's going to be one double one again. Well, he

keeps ending up undouble one, Wesley Harms. Asada, two fours. For 2-0.

Surely this time. No! Great distance vision, Seigo, and he thought that

double one was in. A double four, rather, and this time it is, right

in there. 2-0 ahead. Holding his throw. Seigo Asada

needing just one more leg to make it one apiece in sets. Wesley really

struggling to check out at the moment. He's had 20 darts at a

double and only three hit. Crucially, those three all in the

first set, that clinched the set. But way below his immense

capabilities, the Dutchman. Asada starting to get into a groove.

He's got a nice throw, Seigo Asada. I think of all the pros here

watching him, who have not seen a huge amount of him, just think he's

had so much talent, and if he was playing here regularly, had would be

a real tough competitor to deal with, and surely vying for a top

eight place. He left himself down a little bit last year. Well, we all

make mistakes. This for the set. Well, treble 19 would have left

bull's-eye. Harms will be back for Shanghai, to stay alive in set

number two. A quick bit of aarithmetic from Seigo. There is the

treble. The big one, now tops! That is quality! Quality from Harms! 2-1.

The group of women who you saw just briefly, wearing rollers and head

skashs, are staying in my hotel. As they left they said, "Where is the

bingo tonight, Duck?" I knew what there were here for. As it is, Seigo

Asada has the darts to level us up at one set apiece.

A handy advantage on the Asada throw. Another one of those would

wipe it out. If has effectively taken the throw, hasn't he? Harms is

in a position where he could level it set. -- the set. And when it gets

to the deciding leg, he'd had the darts. Great first dart, right in

the middle of the treble. And another! Nicely poised, if he gets

an opportunity. Which may not come! Double 8! Just outside!

This for the set. Treble 20, yes, two at double ten... It's there!

APPLAUSE Terrific response from Seigo Asada!

Doesn't look an awful lot between these two lads. No, trading blows

toxt. I think it's the fact that Asada has not seen so. . People

don't realise how good a player he is. You look at his ranking 160, and

think this will be Wesley Harms, but that's because we don't see him

playing in the BDO. Nicely starting with a 140. Could do with a trouble

now and can't -- with a treble now and can't find it.

Wesley Harms, one of the clean living ones. He keeps himself in

great shape, doesn't He has been an almost ever-present

in the auditorium. He is not only a very good darts player, he's a bit

of a darts fan as well, isn't he? He's been here seeing so much of the

action. He just loves the sport and he's still learning as well, which

is why he wants to watch every bit of darts he can. Asada looking for

Shanghai, looking for the 120 checkout. Seen Harms do this. Needs

a treble 20 now. It's not in. Opportunity down at 141, taken a 120

so far. That's impressive from Harms. Asada, 60 required. Harms

waiting on 11. Tops. And he's got it! And goes ahead. A

break of throw, beg your pardon, that's with the throw, but it's the

first leg in this second set. The first time he's been ahead as well.

The man from Osaka City, Seigo Asada. First maximum of the match!

His fourth of the tournament. And that's four... Make it five. Go

on! 52,000-pound bonus for anyone who gets a nine-darter.

Well, he's ahead against the darts and he's peppering that treble now.

Oh, he's going for a 25 there. Harms on 220. His throw under immense

pressure. Excellent. For a two-leg lead, third set.

Treble 18 would have left double 12. He may go treble 10 now. Just doing

the mathematics. Oh, he does. Nails it is as well. Harms, 80. 20 for

tops. To make it one apiece. He missed.

So, double 18 for a two-leg lead, third set.

Harms again, only four doubles out of 23 attempt, but now he gets one

when it counts, squares up the set. It's one apiece.

Five legs apiece across the match. But not hugely impressive on the

doubles front either. Five out of 25, five out of 22. Not world

championship finishing. Good again from Asada. 140. His 11th

at 140 or more. He is getting more big hits than Harms.

Scoring would have been very good were it not for the poor finishing.

Yes, Harms, over his first niebl darts, north of -- final darts,

north of 103. The doubles have let them down. Another good visit. He's

on a finish. Asada trying to make it so he really needs to take that one,

that he can't find the treble. This for a big break. Treble 20, treble

17 would leave bull. Asada comes back looking for 143. Harms poised

on 64. A lot of pressure on this Asada throw. And now what is Harms

made of this time? , big leg this, you sense. 16, oh,

tops. Yes! But Wesley Harms! And that's a break.

So advantage Harms once more. Nip and tuck all the way this match.

Swaying one way, then the other. And Harms now with the advantage with

that 64 checkout. See quite a variety of headwear at

this unique venue. Excellent from Harms again. Moves

in, within touching distance of this second set, 102 required when he

comes back. Let's see what he can do.

This for the sest. Treble 20 would have left double 11. He may switch

down to treble ten here now. That's what he was aiming for. 136. The

biggest checkout of the match so far. It would have been. Now, Harms

gets it very much more gettable 52. Is leaves tops. His favourite route.

Double ten... Asada can make him pay. 76, two darts, treble 20 the

first one. He missed it. Double 18... That's a great chance missed.

That was a big, big moment, if he could have tank that out. As it is,

all Wesley Harms needs, he takes the third set, has the darts and the

lead at 2 sets to one. Seigo Asada looks a little bit disconsolate. He

knows he had a great opportunity there. Pick himself up and go again.

The number five seed now is a warm favourite to progress. Wesley Harms,

a 174, said with great gusto. LAUGHS

And a little smile. That little wager they are having between them.

He is happy. He's called a 174. He is leading the race as well, isn't

he? Martin, the Scottish referee, the instigator of this. And Hugh,

our spotter, has none at all. A poor effort.

Harms is nicely set with the darts to take an early strike. He is 127

now, that he requires. Asada on a finish but it's a very big one.

Bull's-eye. Well, he just moved away to compose

himself and lost his momentum and focus.

Well, the 167 won't be happening. So Wesley will return. 45 may happen.

Asada 76 again. Double 16. Double 8, this is an important dart.

So Asada with a glimmer here. Treble 20 leaves double 8. Against the

throw... No! Again, an opportunity missed for Asada.

A decent marker, a decent guide. It's even better, surely, this time.

Averages are pretty similar between these two. But Harms starting to get

big scores when it counts and his nerve just holding. It'sline very

little between them, really, George, but Harms just managing to take the

advantage. The heavy scoring has been rendered largely irrelevant by

the quality of the finishing. They are not taking too much time to get

to that finish, but you can see on the screen, what happens. Five of 25

for Asada, and just eight of 34 for the fiest seed. More like it from

Asada. Put him on a finish it. 101 when he comes back. And Harms has

left himself on a Shanghai, should he fail. Asada then for 101. There's

it one. Wrong side of the wire. For 101. There's it one. Wrong side of

the wire. Well, he was trying to get the treble to leave tops there. He

had one Shanghai already, second set. Big 20 leaves a double 4,

another, no, not this time. Well, Asada might go 10s, could go 18s.

He's got it, for double 8. Good finishing! That's more like it. And

a happy manager waves the Japanese national flag and had his trademark

smile on as well. It's so frustrating, isn't it - when you can

see a nice clean two-dart finish like that. Where they are going

through the motions and missing double one, double eights, double

twos and fours. Asada has too take this set in order

to progress into the decider. Harms has the darts so he's got his

work to do. He's got to find a break somewhere.

Opportunity here... He got the darts back. And he's got two... In the

treble! Well, that is good. Sees the momentarily weakness in Harms and

jumped in to capitalise. A good response. He'll have six darts at it

but he might not need it. Treble 17 would leave a bull's-eye. No need to

panic, back up to 20, Seigo. Brilliant dart. And he's throwing

really well now. Harms, 198 he wants and that's a poor first one. Not

what was ordered. Asada to go ahead against the throw. Two sixes. Yes!

That's a big break. Asada now will throw

That underlines what we were saying before the match and in the run-up

to it. Asada is a far better player than he showed HIC to be last year.

He's built on an impressive preliminary round performance

against Darius Labanauskas, and he's giving Wesley Harms a real battle

here. The number 5 seed knows he's in a match, and Asada at the moment

has the bit between his teeth. Yeah. Worries type, these, perhaps for

Harms. Another couple of those might help

ANNOUNCER: 123. He is still there. He is still there hanging around! A

good dart. Solid throwing, but Harms has a glimmer of an opportunity,

George. He does. Another one of those and it will be an even bigger

opportunity. A quality tonne. Not on a finish, though. Asada will be the

first to throw a check-out. What's it going to be? He could do with

another treble. It is just the wrong side of the wire. Well, he will have

122 to take the set, and send us into a decider here. Her he goes --

here he goes then. Just working out the various permeations, which way

is he going the choose to go. 122, Harms - oh, that's a good first

dart! Bull's-eye! He's got it! Right in the centre! What a dart that is!

Relax for a moment, man, because you have thrown a great dart, terrific

check-out! Way to go Seigo! That was brilliant!

What a good game of darts this is turning out to be now. You wouldn't

like to bet one way or the other. It is a real pick sort of match, this.

Even money either way, this one. 122, highest finish of the match.

Wesley had a 120. Narrowly missed a second Shanghai as well. Asada's

average now, the higher of the two. It's kind of reached the stage where

it isn't about averages. We know that's been undone by some pretty

poor finishing, it is really about who's nerve holds now, George,

because this is where it is all decided, this is into sort of

championship darts now, and this is where they will be separated, who is

the toughest, who is the strongest, and who is going to keep their

focus, keep their nerve. Absolutely spot on. It is about finding the

finish now. Both players three doubles away from winning the match.

This is a chance for Harms. Asada not on a finish. Harms, what he

would give for 140 here. But has to settle for a rather more prosiay 60.

He will have a shot at 144. Asada could set something slightly more

comfortable up here. What is he going to set up here? He is in two

minds, isn't he? 74 he's got so far. So, 144 for Harms. Asada on a good

oppurtunity that's a great first dart! Looking for treble 16. Not a

bad lead. Annouce say go you require 92. He's just taken out a 122. What

about a 92. Treble 20 leaves double 16. Oh!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE 122, 96, back-to-back. Absolute

quality! Just at the key moment. Asada found terrific darts and

Wesley Harms has sweaty palms! Harms has it to do now. That was

only Asada holding the throw, but Harms, anyway, has to find a break.

good first start. He needed treble 17 for a bull there.

Nothing Seigo can do from here. 64. To make it one each. Tops. For

Harms. And he's got it! Penalty finish!

APPLAUSE It is level again. Starting to look

as though it is one of those which really could go all the way. Are we

going to have another sudden death match here? It is looking that way,

isn't it, at the moment? Oh, that's a poor visit from Asada. Now, then,

a big opportunity this. Asada looking for a maximum. And

getting it! APPLAUSE

His second of the match! The crowd loving this game now! It's

just a big scrap this now. Two sets all. One leg all. Pretty even Steven

on the board, this. The third leg of the deciding set. It is good

shooting again from Asada. On 155 when he comes back, but Harms...

APPLAUSE a maximum! What a time to do it! He

is on 140. Here goes Asada for 155. Treble 19. Oh! Unlucky, just the

wrong side of the wire. Moving up to the 18s. He goes for 20s instead.

Couple of treble 20s needed. That's the first of them. There is the

second. So double 10 for a $14$0! . CROWD: Oh!

Some distances - this has been the leg of the match. Asada on throw. 66

required for double 18 now. This is a huge dart. And he's missed it!

This against the throw. Wesley Harms! Three darts at double 10.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE . One ahead. He will now throw for

the match. Asada looks baffled. Well, it was a huge moment, wasn't

it? It was a massive dart, that, for Asada. He couldn't take it out, and

Harms stepped in and now he is poised. Beautiful throwing! 140. It

has turned into a terrific tussle, this one. The equation is simple for

Asada - if he doesn't win this leg - that is a good last dart. If he

doesn't win this leg it is all over and the number 5 seed will go

through. And Harms, having thrown a 140 with his first visit... Now adds

something a little less. Century minimum here, you would say,

for Asada. Oh, dear. Tension in that last dart. A nervous one. Tugging it

below the target, and Harms cashing in. As good as the maximum. 177!

He's left himself on 116 for the match. He is going to have quite a

few darts at that. But can he see it out first time? Well, treble 20

would have left the finish. Treble 17 will set something nice up. But,

no. That's not great, but 74... It's a far nicer place to be than 315,

and Harms coming back to secure his place in the next round. All Asada

can do is just watch and hope that something goes wrong. He's missed

it! He had 20 for tops and he missed it.

That was most unexpected but it might be also largely irrelevant

here. Decent visit from Asada, but here we go! Take two, Wesley! Tops.

For the match! Double 10 for Wesley Harms. And he's missed that as well.

. Wesley Harms has prevailed in a tremendous game of darts. Forget

about the averages, the doubles kind of let them both down, but it was a

terrific tussle, and Wesley Harms, coming through, the seeding is

confirmed. He beats Seigo Asado, a real narrow squeak, by three sets to

two. Toal all-Yorkshire meeting. Brian Dawson, last year's

quarterfinalist, was an interested spectator in the prelims on Monday

when his good friend and County practice partner, Walton cam through

his first match in four years here to tee up this great encounter,

between two great friends. But which one would cast loyalty aside and

book his place in the second round? A lot of prematch money being

wagered on the chances of the old champion, John Walton. 54 years old.

He is a Yorkshire tussle. It is a south Yorkshire tussle. Sheffield.

Brian Dawson, lives in Rotherham. He plays out of Barnesly, does Brian

Dawson. So, all bases being touched. One or two holes in that shirt of

Brian Dawson's we have heard. Yes, an accidently air-conditioned shirt,

courtesy of the-odd ironing mishap. It is his lucky shirt so he isn't

going to throw it away. It will take more than a few holes in it to get

rid of that. Well, they say we are tight in Yorkshire. Maybe he doesn't

want to buy We have an all-Yorkshire comment try

box as well -- commentary box as well. I will maintain an unbiased

side though. Walton will be first to a finish. He will have six darts.

Treble 20. For treble 11. Well, he went bull. Got nowhere near it.

Treble 16. To leave double 4. Dawson, 196. Just trying to make it

so that's an absolutely must-get. Could do with a treble here, and

gets it. ANNOUNCER: John, you require eight. Couple of fours then

First leg John Walton. They know each other's games inside out, these

two. Both county players, they play together on a regular basis. Walton,

as you said, coming back to form after a poor spell. Dawson said to

me, "I think I have got his measure. I beat him more often than he beats

me." "I reckon that I have got him." I don't think there will be a lot

between them either way. It will be a good match us this one. I would be

surprised if one steam rollers the other. If Walton can find the worm

that we saw -- form that we saw before, he has every chance. Back in

2001 John Walton beat Chris Mason in the semifinals, and in the final

talk out Merv the King, Merv the swerve. Evening Chris, if you are

stunning in tonight. And evening Mervyn as well. Absolutely!

Some of the PDC players pretend not to be interested in the BDO world

championship but you can take it from me they are! If you are a dahs

fan you are watching. Come on! We love it! That is why we are here.

Bit dodgy these darts from Dawson. He looks a bit jittery. He needs to

settle into the match. He will be under pressure here if Walton can

find a treble. There it is! APPLAUSE

Not on a finish, but he has an advantage. A tidy advantage as well,

with Dawson unable to trouble the treble at the moment. Maybe a switch

down will help. Well, he does find the treble. Not sure he was after

You think he will go the 19 rut here? Well, he's missed it? He has a

That's an excellent retrieval of a distinctly fogey situation -- dodgy

throw. And he's got it! This is a good start from Walton. 2-0 up in

the opening leg. A good double for John to have landed.

yesterday, you may recall Mr Rawling alongside me taking a bit of a fancy

to a man who had a boot fufl of pies. We found him in the bar last

rather sticky sort of start, is Brian. Walton looking for his first

Coming down for 17s. He's got it! For bull's-eye! Good effort! He is

looking like his old self, isn't he Double 6 then. Yes!

APPLAUSE A bull like that... He's on the

board. Bill used to throw a few mean darts

himself back in the day - apparently. I wasn't there, but I

have been told . He looks like the kind of guy who has a real tales.

Brian is a chip off the old block. Said his brother was coming down. I

don't know if he is actually here. Used to be a semiprofessional boxer,

used to go around and do exhibitions with Harold Graham. Old Bomber!

Didn't take too many liberties would him, would you? Used to go... I

wouldn't take a single liberty! Martin Adams beaten earlier on

today. Look at this, though, Graham used to go around the prisons

and put his hands behind the back and invite any of the handy lads the

try and hit him and then used to make a fool of them and make them

miss. Tony Simpson called it the limbo dance. He was a terrific

fighter. This at the moment looks like it may be another leg against

the darts. Walton will be the first to have a crack at a finish, but

what's it going to be in a treble would make things nice. That isn't

what he wanted! Come back with 116. A good dart from

Dawson. Dawson's hovering. If he gets a chance. Treble 20. A big 16

leaves double top for the first set to Watson. He is back, is John Boy!

Gly tell you what - George is looking good tonight. He is sort of

disappeared off the map, didn't he. And now here comes Dawson.

Disappeared off the map and he's come here this year, coming through

the qualifiers, up in Hull and plying well there. Nobody expected

him really to come through then. Look at this! That was unlucky. That

is off the barrel. That was heading for a 180. He is looking absolutely

back to Terrific stuff from John Walton. A

nice final dart from Brian Dawson. He has a bit to do, has Brian. He

has to try and get Walton out of his rhythm somehow. It is moments like

this when he has the chance to jump all over what was a relatively

mediocre visit. Geert de Vos there, the Belgian, watching on with a

noisy contingent of Belgian supporters. They are enjoining

themselves. It is fair to say they have had a good afternoon and

evening. Yes, yes. In time-honoured fashion! Has anybody's who's ever

been to Belgian and spent time in Brussels, you would know all about

that sort of thing I'm sure! LAUGHTER

It was a palace take to typecast, but it is a fun place to visit --

mistake to typecast but it is a fun place to finish. A great finish but

Brilliant! People are standing up. They are rising in acclaim. A

spectacular finish! Awesome from Dawson! That was absolutely obscene

darts! Brilliant! Used to be an Alan e Venezuela'

speciality back in the day. Brian Dawson showing that the passage of

two or three decades, there is still so many out there who like to do it.

He had to do that, just to hold throw. That's the pressure he's

under. Really looking forward to this game

when I saw the old JR initials put alongside! I was really looking

forward to watching this one and being here in the box for that sort

of reason! That was almost a maximum.

APPLAUSE Mr Dawson Senior the chief cheer

leader. Peppering the treble 19. His throw is under the pressure. Look at

the averages. Both north of 90. Very good! Very good!

Walton. The Yorkshire rifles locked together -- rivals locked together.

there may be an opening for Walton. Lost his time a couple of times, has

Brian Dawson. He is under a wee bit of pressure again. Can he extricate

himself with a big score here? Looks as though he might be able to. 140

is handy. APPLAUSE

This is good stuff! Dawson's first nine darts averaging 102. Overall

average for both players in the 92-93 mark. John Walton - well, the

adrenaline will be pumping through him at the moment. Back on the big

stage and doing himself justice. He said in his first match, didn't he,

when he came through the preliminaries against Rob Modra, I

think somebody spoke to him and said, "You looked so calm up there.

You looked fantastic." CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

He said... "I was so nervous that I managed to cope with it." And he's

coping with it brilliantly again! John Boy on 161. Against the darts.

Treble 20. So, not this time, but he will be

back There was a visment sort of harrumpf when he missed that dart,

or some other such sentiments. Here comes Dawson trying to put pressure

on. Needs a treble. He's not been able to find it. He is annoyed.

Treble 13 for double 16. A single. So 18 leaves one dart at tops. To

break Dawson's thrall. And he shatters the throw!

APPLAUSE He will now throw for a two sets to

0 lead. Well, the big punt which came on Walton today appears to, at

this stage, be well justified. This leg, he is two sets up. They will

have an interval at the end of this leg, at the end of this set anyway,

and Dawson will have to regroup unless he can hit straight back

here. That is a good start from Walton with the 125. 50% the

check-out. Five of his 10 yards have landed for John 'Boy' Walton The

winner of this one faces Jeff Smith, the cool guy from Canada, who

accounted for Martin Adams in such impressive fashion earlier on. This

is good! Classy sort of match, that

Smith-Adams classic darts and then Chas from Adams as well, a gentleman

in defeat. Good to see. Yeah, I saw Jeff Smith at close of play last

night, as we migrated back to the hotel. He was in reception. Everyone

else piled into the bar. He said his good nights, went quietly off to

bed. He looked fresh as a does -- daisy today. That was 5% Stewart

Pearce wasn't it! LAUGHTER

I will take your word for it! He is on a finish. This is for a

set. 830 he needs -- 80 he needs. Six darts from here. Double 10. Only

needs two. That is such good throwing again!

APPLAUSE John Walton! The doubles are going

in. He's scoring heavenly and he's two sets up against Brian Dawson.

ANNOUNCER: Game on. The 125 finish was superb. But Walton, in no sense,

phased by it. His overall average of more than 95 is top class. His

finishing at 55% is similarly top drawer.

Here you see the averages from the sets. They seem almost 100 for

Walton in that second set. Just not fazed at all by that spectacular

check-out from Dawson in the first leg of the set. Yeah. Scoring

heavily. But crucially over 50% on the doubles. So, that average is not

dipping once he gets to a finish. He's back in the trebles after the

break. Dawson is going to have to real

scrap this one out. Walton with the darts. How much it

would aid Dawson's cause if he could somehow squeeze a victory out of

this opening leg. Maybe he has just got a glimmer of an opportunity

here. 183 against the darts. Walton had a 131. He is looking for a 141

now. Usually the final throw of the nine-dart attempts. He's not done

it. So, Dawson will get a chance. 124, when he recovers - when he

returns. So, 124 for Dawson. Treble 18 would leave bull. Bull's-eye then

That is a bill moment! It is very much a Brian Dawson moment. What an

opportune moment to find a spectacular finish. He did that in

the last set. And then Walton recovered and came blasting back.

But that's a good tart from Dawson -- tart from Dawes das in -- start

from Dawson ins this second leg. Really compelling contest. Can

Dawson get his way back into it? Looks like he fancies doing just

that. APPLAUSE

A great start again. And a second one next to it. How about the

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE What a response! Walton's... The

fourth maximum! This is a nice way to silence the crowd!

match so far. Dawson two-up. Both players throwing brilliantly. They

have come to play, these two. We have had some double trouble in

our various matches today, but Beth of these two... Look at this!

Unlucky off the wire. One oh on the floor -- one on the floor. Another

120. Walton on throw. Dawson in no mood

to hang around. He's upped the pace as well, Dawson.

Come on! Get in there. Good throwing!

APPLAUSE Good throwing, you say? Oh! Just the

wrong side of the wire as he went shooting for maximum number 5.

Now Walton is perhaps back in the driving seat in his leg, because

Dawson not on a finish. Not quite where he would wish to be. Dawson is

trying to tee it up for the finish. A nice dart George!

APPLAUSE 133, then, for John Boy. Make that

132. A good second dart. So Dawson for the sack now. 89 with Walton

poised. That's 21 of them. 18 would leave bull's-eye now. It seems to be

loving these, but misses this time! So, 60 for the hold. Two darts at

tops for Walton. He's missed it! He's missed it! He fancied that last

one was in, didn't he? Couldn't believe that it went over the top.

Double eight now for the set. Not a bad marker. Oh, he's just kissed the

wrong side of the barrel. Three more, then, at tops. Two more at

tops. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

He needed that, John Boy. He will hold the throw. Dawson, still with

the darts to make it 3-1, this third set. He is two down, remember.

Walton rolling back the years and playing so impressively here against

his great friend and Yorkshire team-mate and both of them are

hitting plenty of big numbers. Walton over 95. Really high

standards. At one stage he was close to 100. Quarterfinalest on his

debut, Brian Dawson. Last year eventually losing to Scott Mitchell,

who had a decent tournament, as I recall. Yeah. Not the worst! Got to

the semis of the British Open. There he is! Not listening to us, is he?

LAUGHTER He lines to think he's photo ennick,

doesn't -- photogenic doesn't he? Well, he is a big lad! I am not

going to say he's not! LAUGHTER

He looks like he could pull a plough on his own, doesn't he? A great dart

from Dawson. APPLAUSE

This match is really easy on the eye. And great sporting sort of

feeling in the crowd as well. The Dawson contingent, applauding

Walton. Dawson, though, here to win the set. Double 16. There it is!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE It is 2-1. The match goes on, and

Dawson has his first set success. What a scrap we have got!

Has to keep the momentum going, though, does the favourite, the 15th

seed. Jeff Smith waits in round 2. He will be playing a Yorkshireman,

but which one? Dawson in that third set, 100-plus average. Really good

darts. On throw and under a bit of pressure

if Walton can step in. There is one of them. There is two of them!

APPLAUSE Well, what a chance for Walton,

then, at the start of set number 4. They are Dawson's darts, but the

advantage is with Walton. Needs a treble, though. Clenches his teeth

in a little grimace of frustration. He knows that that was an

opportunity which went begging. And Dawson is in the mood to try and

make him pay. That's two in! And that's just over the wire, but 140

gets him back in there. But 165, not a number he would want.

Suddenly a wobble from Walton. No check-out, of course, on 165. Well,

this feels like a big leg. Even at this stage. Dawson waiting on 70.

Got to hold his nerve now. 110 is very makeable. 20 would leave double

16. He's got this last time. But not this time. Now then, John Boy, for a

Bridget break -- big break, the start of set number 4. Treble 18.

Not this time, John. So close, wasn't it? So close. Double 8,

Dawson for 1-0. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Oh, dear. Not a good start to the throw. Immediately a chance. For

Doggy Dawson. He's rather missed an opportunity there. And he knows it.

Wasn't exactly slammed the door open, but he - well, burst it open,

but he would have certainly made a serious impression. He is having a

stick you few legs, is John Walton. "Come on, Doggy", you could probably

hear Brian Dawson saying to himself! Dawson trying to focus and regroup.

That's good. A lovely cover shot. Nearly the pair. Pressure on the

throw, though. Walton struggling to find a treble but lands one now. And

another! APPLAUSE

He is on a finish with 170, Walton. Now, I wonder... Go on then, John!

What have you got? A great start. Another one of those! Bull's-eye for

a 170! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Unlucky, my son. You sometimes get that feeling in your bones that it

is on! And he almost was there. So 25 now. And Dawson is still well

back. For double 4. That's good! APPLAUSE

what a good game of darts! A good leg that for Walton. It was only a

hold. So crucial as well. He almost nailed -- when you almost nail that

big one and you miss it, to see out the leg and make sure you don't the

opponent back in on the next visit, he did that. As so often you see,

when you get the check-out, and you get the leg, suddenly a little bit

more confidence and a little bit more smoothness in the throw, and

that was a really good three from Walton. Now, looking for more of the

same. There is one. And there's two. There is three! Another maximum!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Building on the brilliant start!

140, 180,... It isn't going to be a nine-darter but it could be a

10-darter. Well, he won't care how many it takes if he can win the leg

here because it is against the throw and it would leave Walton throwing

for the match. She is going to come back with a

very makeable 100. A tonne from Dawson. Walton now to take on

against the throw. Oh, what an opportunity now! Two darts! Yes!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE The old champion continues to motor

on! He is now within a leg of victory. Brilliant darts from John

'Boy' Walton. Is Dawson creaking? This is a response!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Yes! That is more like it! As he

nods at the boardment "that's -- at the board. "That's what I can do.

Don't count me out." It is, though, advantage Walton. Oh! He's left the

door ajar, though. And that is another one. A solid tonne. A

million miles away from another 180, was it? Great response from Brian

Dawson. John Boy with darts in hand for the match, but he's struggling,

is Walton. Dawson, if he gets another 140 here, he would be in a

great position. At it, is he is the favourite. He's found a vital treble

with that last dart. Needs a huge visit here, Walton. Switches. A

great switch! Brilliant cover dart John Boy! Chart chart this is some

battle! 121 for Dawson. Treble 17 would set up a bull's-eye. He's

missed it So Walton, again, coming in on a finish and this for the

match. What a story! 112. Treble 20. Would have left double 16. So Dawson

will have a chance. ANNOUNCER: Thank you. Just composing

himself. The crowd are getting a little bit too excited at the wrong

moment. Dawson, 83 to keep the match alive. . 16 would leave bull.

Bull's-eye for Dawson. He's missed it this time! Will Walton close him

out. 20 for tops. Tops. - two chances force John 'Boy' Walton.

Bends the wire on the first. Bends the bottom of the wire on the

That was maximum darts. Agonising for Walton and his fans. Dawson,

25. Double eight. For 22 in this set. He's got it!

ANNOUNCER: Game on! Match darts missed by Walton. Two of them at

tops! Will he live to regret that, John Boy? Brilliant momentum from

Dawson as well. APPLAUSE

He couldn't really have been any closer, could he, without getting

it? Bent the top and the bottom of the wire. If he had another dart at

it it would probably have gone right through the middle. Both of them

peppering the treb 20 now -- treble 20 now. They have space for a 180.

Compelling contest, this. For a lot of years, Brian Dawson was one of

those players who people New Zealand he was a really good player on the

floor in minor tournaments but he couldn't move on to the greater

level. And then last year he did so. And here he is trying to confirm

that advance. We saw Martin Adams there, gripped. Late night at the

Lakeside. Well, if you are watching with us, I hope you are enjoying

this because this is a gripping match. 161 as the flight flies off.

Neither of those in. But he's got time. Making a bit of a hash of it,

though. That two wasn't very clever. Oh, where is your money then? You

have to be on Dawson on this one, hasn't it? 2, 2. Fourth set. Walton

2-1. Missed two much darts. And Dawson is on a finish to send us all

the way. 119 with Walton back on 236. Well, there is the 19. Oh! Off

the wire. Walton, breathes again. Dawson on 80.

No pressure at all coming from the wrist of John Walton. Looks a little

bit annoyed as well. Well, he's not put himself on finish. So Dawson has

six darts. Park he might need them if he throws like that. A single 18

would set it up. He has done. Pressure up there now, isn't there?

There is real pressure. This time, to set up a finish. Single 16, the

shot. APPLAUSE

That is good Trent. Pressure. He knows if he doesn't get this in all

probability it is good night. But he gets it!

APPLAUSE Relate guts from Dawson! He's pulled

back and scared the match. APPLAUSE

Cracking stuff! Under intense pressure! From Brian Dawson. These

two good friends, Dawson from Rotherham, John 'Boy' Walton from

Sheffield. They will go to distance. To be honest it could go on all

night for all I care. All their mates are going to be glued to this.

It is almost one of those matches where you sort of think it is a bit

of a pit you you can't have a draw. But that isn't the nature of the

game. Is the the glade theytorial nature of -- gladetorial nature of

darts what appeals. If you mess it up, you may the price. -- pay

Yes, that drama of jeopardy. No replays on the big stage. Walton

with the darts. Dawson hitting the numbers. We are level-pegging

really. Walton with the throw. That's an important treble. Tonnes,

no disaster. That's two in. Been unlucky. Very close to the 180.

It left him on 180, so no check-out. 135 from Walton is top drawer.

Leaves himself with 70. This is nice from Dawson. A single 20 to set up a

finish, if he gets the chance. APPLAUSE

well, if he gets the chance! 70. Single 20 would leave double 16.

APPLAUSE very, very, very good! One dart, and

one dart taken. Both of them averaging well over 40%

on the finishes. But it's kind of more than that. They have taken them

out at key times in pressure situation.

APPLAUSE good response to that 140! With a

His third! The eighth of the match. It is high-quality!

Walton went bull. Dawson with the darts and the healthy advantage, but

not supplemented. Got to win this leg, has Dawson. Walton knows he can

put the throw under pressure. Hello! APPLAUSE

He will have a chance. 156 for Walton to go 2-0 up. Can't

be done now. And so Dawson - terrific opportunity to square up

the set. APPLAUSE

To bring us level again. Single 16. Oh, he's gone double 16. So trouble

12. Brilliant! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

He didn't intend to do that! But having got the double 8 and double

16, he was flawless in his execution of the double 12.

A fine last dart. APPLAUSE

Trading blow for blow. Two sets all. One leg all, 261, 261.

APPLAUSE Take a tonne 40 off that though for

John Boy. Walton will fancy his chances from here now. And Dawson

just creaking a little bit. 121 now for 2-1. To move within a leg of the

match. Treble 17 leaves a shot at bull's-eye. He will come back,

though. That's not bad. 64 is a decent leave. Steady tonne for

Dawson. Now Walton for 2-1. Treble. 16. Two 16s now John!

He's got it! Treble! And now tops! For 21! Oh! He drags it south of the

mark. And grimaces as he puts in a big miss. Walton's eye focuses. But

can he fire? Two massive darts these. You feel this has to land.

John Walton! APPLAUSE

Well, to get it to 2-2, at which point it would have to be a 2-leg

margin for victory. Dawson has to throw and hold this throw.

Otherwise, Walton is the champion. Or rather the champion of this

particular contest! A champion of Yorkshire. It feels like that!

Champion of south Yorkshire and champion of a terrific rivalry which

has developed over the years between the two of them.

Well, Walton is way back, which for him is a shame because that was a

loose visit from Dawson. This isn't the great -- isn't a great deal

better. Dawson on 306. Still with the advantage. That's a good little

adjustment. No real damage done. He has still

A tonne minimum, you fear at the moment. Trying to force it through

the middle. 221, Dawson. Working right along the oche to create an

angle to go for that treble 20. Misses it. Wolt wolt way back --

Walton way back. Dawson waiting on a finish. A big one though. 161.

Raised the roof if this goes in! There's a first treble 20. He's

missed the treble 17, though. What kind of pressure can Walton put

on here? Not a great deal. A good last dart. A cracking game this. It

does feel like a final. It has that sort of rivalry. Well, he didn't --

didn't go for it there. Well, Walton, then. Sang high -- Shanghai

for the match. Well, treble 1 would not be the advised route. So Dawson

will come back with double 16 to square up the match. Now he's got it

as much as - he is saying, "Where was that one when I needed it?" Here

we go then. Double 16. Can he get it?

APPLAUSE . Of course he can! Going the

distance. ANNOUNCER: The match must be won by

two clear legs. Five legs all. The 11th leg will be sudden death. Good

game of Garretts. APPLAUSE

-- darts. Nip and tuck. It deserved to go all the way. Walton started

superbly. He had the early advantage, but what fighting guts

from Dawson to come back and drag it back. A really good match. A lot of

tension up there now. And they have got to win by two clear legs.

Otherwise if it goes all the way, it goes to sudden death. Two great

mates won't feel like that at the moment. Don't forget Walton has had

two darts for the match. It seems a long time ago. It seems like a

lifetime ago in the context of the match. I wonder whether he is still

thinking about it, though. Well, you would hope not for his sake. I doubt

it's lodged -- no doubt it's lodged somewhere in the psyche, and he

doesn't need that. Dawson effectively had the darts.

Treble would be an opportunity. An opportunity missed, a big

opportunity missed to real turn the screw. He still nibbled a bit into

the Walton throw, though. Certainly be John can't find a treble here...

This is tension, George. Nerves. Who is going to withstand it the better?

The Walton arm has stiffened. He has a tonne on him now.

He will be disappointed after that opening dart there. Has the darts,

though. Brian Dawson. Sets up 120. He is in touching distance. The The

old pub game favourite. A Shanghai. That is what he needs. Treble,

single tops. Missed it. He will come back against the darts,

because Walton has had a shocker of a leg. Just when it matters most.

Now he's finding the trebles! It is curious sometimes, isn't it? 60 and

then tops. He has two at it for a 3-2 lead. There it is!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE At last he is in front! It could be

a decisive strike, if he holds his throw. It is Dawson's match. What a

match! And now real pressure on John Walton. But that wasn't good!

Where is that treble, John? He is only finding it at the moment when

the pressure is pretty much off him. Sweating up in the paddock a little

bit there, as well. Just dabbing the brow. This is good from Dawson! 140.

Agonisingly close to another 180. He can almost taste it now, can Brian

Dawson. What a contest this has been P maybe we're not done yet!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Either way, it's my guess these two

will have a celebratory pint, whatever the result, after this.

Because it has been a terrific contest and another huge hit from

Dawson. APPLAUSE

. I wouldn't be pouring it just yet! Because here is Walton. No fib

anywhere for either man. Dawson on 18 of. A great first dart! Maybe

just a touch high in the bed. Just checking where he is. He had 80

scored. Terrific darts! APPLAUSE

So, 52 for the match. Dawson comes back. And Walton strays into the

one. Then the treble. Double 16 for Dawson to win it!

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE A brilliant match! A fabulous

finish! Doggy Dawson finally downs John 'Boy' Walton in an absolute

Three sets to two. John Boyed a two darts for the match. But it's Dawson
