Day 8 Darts: World Championships - Highlights

Hello. Semi-final Saturday at Lakeside is usually one of the best

days in darts. The atmosphere is electric and the states could barely

be higher for the players vying for a place in the showdown. -- the

stakes. We start with Scott Waites, 3-0 down in the second round. 3-1

down against the number one seed. Glenn Durrant is in sensational

form. The 2013 world champion. But standing in his way was Jamie

Hughes, who at times in the quarter-final against Wesley Harms

was averaging over 105. If he could keep his cool, we would be in for

another cracking encounter on the big stage.

Unfortunately for Hughes, he couldn't quite replicate his form

from the quarter-finals. He raced to a five set lead before the latest

glimmer of hope to get 5-1. We will pick it up at the start of the

seventh state. -- step. That was Scott Waites's sixth

maximum of the match. And his 13th of the week. Jamie has had 15 but

only on today. He really did play so well against Wesley Harms. He has

not really been anything like at the same level. He loved the moment.

There it is. The second of the afternoon. 134 is doable, but not

now. Scott Waites will come back with the

troubled 20. The double eight possibility. This complicates things

a little bit. He is on 61. Here it goes. Hughes waiting. The girlfriend

smiling happily. Oh dear... Only 39. And the first two set against Wesley

Harms, Jamie Hughes averaged 105. That's why he was so pleased. He

didn't keep that sort of standard for the rest of the quarter-final

but he wasn't too far. That's why he was so pleased that he finally

showed that IT was capable of on that stage. The good prose, they

showed that IT was capable of on say it is all very well to do it on

Monday but you have to do it everyday. That's what separates them

at highest level. This is amplifying that particular sentiment. Here,

with the darts, he is under all sorts of pressure again. A 39 and a

28 to his name already. Add a 43 to that mix. Not good!

that he will be back next year and he knows, from what happened last

night, that he can produce on the big stage. But Scott Waites is

the finish. 161. That will be a spectacular way to take it out. It

straightforward. I was just waiting for Jamie to start playing darts and

he never seemed to kick in. Were you surprised that we didn't see the

kind of quality we had from him in the quarter-final, when at times he

was 105? Certainly. You always prepare yourself for the great game

that he has got and you get up on stage, you know no matter what you

need to focus in your own brain. You need to tell yourself, just carry on

and hit trebles and doubles when you get a chance. Jamie was so far this

game. But, at the end of the day, you've still got to kick in and beat

him still. What does it mean to you to be in another Lakeside final? An

opportunity to join an elite band of men to be multiple video champions?

I'm not sure, it hasn't sunk in. -- BDO. I mean, this afternoon, I don't

know what I will do with myself now! It seemed surreal. I had 54 messages

before and when I beat Glenn I had 70. I love to go back and look at my

phone and see how many messages I've gotten. -- I will have to. It will

be brilliant. Now to the second semi-final, featuring a Canadian who

has so far swept all before him. Jeff Smith put a stop to Martin Wolf

Leigh Adams on his hunt for world champion number four and he has been

a real favourite here. They have been charging his name. But if he

was to make a final he would have to beat Richard Veenstra, who knocked

out the early three seed early on. This one had the makings of a great

match. Richard Veenstra has won this

match! The cool guy from Canada does it

again. Huge darts. Yes! That's brilliant! What a performance.

So, the North American against the Dutch debutante and it turned into

an absolute thriller. Neat and stuck all the way for two men aiming for

uncharted territory. We will point it at -- join it at

will Richard Veenstra leave? He will have to fancy himself from here.

Treble 20 for tops. Another setpoint. The third one he has

missed. You could steal this, Richard. Not now you can't. Jeff

waits on tops for a 5-4 lead. He has only to hit this three times in 11

attempts. That's the one! It gives Jeff Smith the lead again! This is

both the nitty and the gritty. Veenstra needs to be not far off

flawless. He has the dart, just needs to focus

on this set, winning this set, and taking us all the way. The deciding

set could be a long one. It must be won by two clear legs and

then from 5-5, it means a southern deaf -- sudden death leg to decide

the winner. We have only had 13 of those ever at Lakeside before and we

have had four busier. -- this year. A great leg of darts. Tops! A13 dart

leg to kick us off. It was interesting to see Veenstra delaying

his return to the stage momentarily. interesting to see Veenstra delaying

He is not overwrought by the occasion. Just momentarily, Veenstra

had a break of throw and a 4-3 lead. But Smith broke back for 4-4 and

then five -4. There has never been more than one set in this and only

one break of the apiece. There is an opportunity for Veenstra. Jeff Smith

requires 160. Assuming Smith do something extraordinary, and he

won't on this visit. Missed it for times in a row, the

double 11, only three legs ago. All of a sudden... We're close to a

deciding set. One leg away from it. Veenstra with the darts, leading by

2-1. It seems every time they have gone

off stage the guy who has been behind has come out strongly. It can

be a momentum halter, the break. Certainly what we have seen tonight.

Although that one is a little bit all over the place.

Both struggling in this leg. Maybe Veenstra can overcome... Well, he is

on a finish and Smith is not. So you would really favour Veenstra for the

set from here. Richard requires 142. For the set! Treble ten is the shot

here. The break back. Treble needed. Unlucky. To take us

all the way... Double 16. Yes! Once again, from 2-2, it must be won

by two clear legs. If they reach 5-5 we go to sudden death. We are into a

deciding set and honestly we always thought we would be.

Nicely done. Leaves a finish of 167, which would of course be the highest

of the tournament so far. Scott Mitchell on the balcony next to us

hold his breath. And egg -- exhales.

This to strike first. Double tops. Advantage Smith. Yes. And pressure

Veenstra. What a good dart! What an excellent guide after the bounce

out. Because if Smith breaks here, he is drawing for the match. --

excellent dart. That is crucial, potentially! It is big! Massive

moment in the match. We're going to find out a lot about Richard

Veenstra in the next minute or so, because look at this from Jeff

Smith. He is going through a purple patch

to match his purple shirt. And he is so close to the finishing line that

this could carry him through it. 92 when he comes back for a break of

throw. Veenstra must find a treble. To break the throw and moved

within a leg of victory. Not this time.

Though, treble 19. Here is a huge moment. Tops for Jeff Smith!

misses, just and Smith moves towards the final. This is a great marker.

He can use the barrel. Six missed! Barely believable. Two eights. Not

again! Nerves, pure and simple. We've found the Canadians. They're

loving it. They're willing this into the 55. -- double five. In it goes!

Finally! In it goes! And Jeff Smith is a leg away from the world

championship final! Third leg is Jeff Smith to throw first. He was a

semifinalist last year. This popular, quiet, unassuming

Canadian, now throwing for the right to experience the unique atmosphere

of a Lakeside final for the first time. Has he got anything left,

Veenstra? Just asking the crowd to behave.

Smith, with the advantage of throwing first, if he keeps doing

that there is little Veenstra can do about it. He need to treble. He got

the treble, but is it enough? It has been a stunning debut from Richard

Veenstra. Has he got one more bit of fight left in him? The door is

ajar. And he is on a finish. Jeff will be on a better one. Richard,

does. We are already under way in the deciding set. Breathtaking

entertainment being provided by these two. Stunning! Lakeside loving

this, but that is four in a row. Five in a row! Six in a row! That is

a nine dart leg, and if he reaches the final the roof will go off! 141

points away from the final and history. Compose yourself, Jeff. The

final is still in your grasp! Or is it? Veenstra will be back for 150. A

brilliant lead of darts, and he is handily placed, unless... Excellent,

but it may be in vain. For the match! Wow! What a way to do it!

Jeff Smith, the Silencer, makes lakeside as noisy as it has ever

been. Well played Richard Veenstra, what a semi-final this has been, and

to do it on a ten dart leg, that is impressive! Jeff, what a day, and

what a way to do it. A ten dart leg to make the championship final. That

was a very tough match for me, Richard didn't go away at any point

in the match, and it took something special for me to get through. I am

so glad I got through that. You had a great run to the semis last year,

but you have grown even further this year. You seem so comfortable on the

big stage. I have only ever will lost one match on the big stage, and

I really feel at home up there. I have a lot of crowd support, and I

just played one dart at a time. It is huge for you and for North

American darts. You are the first Canadian into the final since John

Part in 1994. Can you replicate that? If it came back to winning a

Canadian national title, if you have done something that John has done,

that man has done everything for Canada. Really, to get any title

with his name on it, you are doing something right. Scott Thwaites is

in great form, but so are you. We are all teed up for a fabulous

final. Do you believe you can beat the 2013 champion and raise that

trophy for yourself? Of course I can, and he will believe the same

thing. We are both on form, the scores are great, so it will come

down to who is on tomorrow and we will see what happens. Well done

tonight, and west of luck in the final. So, Jeff Smith becomes the

first Canadian into the final in 32 years, and he will face Scott

Thwaites for the title. It promises to be a fitting finale, and a great

week. That was the line up for the men's final, but we also have the

climax to the women's. Trina Gulliver was aiming for a

record-breaking 10th title. Hedman danced her way on, just missing out

on the sport's ultimate crown. We will join it at 2-2, with Gulliver

having the first leg in the final. Anxious, nervous darts. What a time

to do that! Gulliver is galloping now. Travelling! 321, with the

maximum. Hedman is trailing in her wake. Hedman has got to come again,

she has to fire back. That one never reached the target, it launched in

the first two. 2-2, Gulliver ahead. She is looking the more likely

winner, Deta Hedman has gone right off the boil. How important it would

be if she could get a big 140. Good! Who wants it? At the moment, Trina

looks keener and the meaner. All she can do is put some pressure

on, which she is doing fairly effectively. That is great darts, at

she didn't get to finish. That is the difference, when she is looking

to close it out, that is when the nerves come in. Now is the test.

You've got to take this, Deta Hedman. 16, double 16. Double ten.

Again, I am not sure she wasn't going for 16 double 16. This for

2-0. The tension is unbelievable! Another go. For 1-1 in the decider.

One dart at double two. A huge mess, this is history being repeated.

There it is! Trina Gulliver only needs one more leg and she is the

champion for the 10th time. What a story! A bit of unwelcome symmetry

beckoning for Deta Hedman. Is she going to be second best two years

on? She can still extricate herself from this mess but she needs to get

doubles. She has kept on scoring OK, but the doubles have let her down

big-time. When it has come to the key checkouts, Deta Hedman has got

closer, has looked more and more jittery. The game has just gone

under pressure, and the body language tells you everything you

need to know. A lovely person who wants this trophy so very much.

Gulliver is now poised to accelerate away. That almost hit the feet of

Deta Hedman, she had to move out of the way. It is getting closer for

Trina Gulliver. the way. It is getting closer for

within her sights come on, she says. Been there, done that before. She

knows how to be a winner. The Been there, done that before. She

darts in years she has played Been there, done that before. She

the last time she won was in 2011. Not on a Finnish yet, but a long way

is doing up there, and I'm afraid to say, it is happening once more. Can

she somehow still turn it around? Not with darts like that. To set up

a Finnish, from 181. She is first to finish, and a finish that would

yield that world title once more. She needs a huge visit and across of

the fingers, that is the best start possible. Here we go, 121. This is

for the title. Good dart! 25 would leave double 18, there are options.

Treble 11 would leave you a double 14. She went for the 25, didn't

anticipate getting that treble 20, I think. Usually does the treble 17th

and bullseye. She will be back at the top for the title. Can Hedman

apply any pressure? Yes, she can. She has got to find a third dart.

She gets the treble! But it might be in vain. The golden girl has the

Midas touch once again. This is for title Number Ten. Two tops is all it

requires. She could do it with eyes closed in practice. A bit different

now. 39 left, double 18. This for the title can she take it out? She

can! She does! Trina Gulliver, at the age of 46, is the champion once

more! We didn't expect her to do it here, and there are tears of joy!

The champion for a record 10th time, and sad to say that Deta

Hedman perhaps couldn't cope with the magnitude of the situation once

again, and for the third time she has to accept the runners-up prize.

But Trina Gulliver has come back with recent performance. She will

get the cheque for ?12,000, and also she will get the winners trophy, and

what a moment for her this will be. For the 10th time, champion of the

world, the golden girl, Trina Gulliver! You may have thought this

day would never come, nine has become ten, and what a way to do

it. It was a fantastic game, I knew it was going to be tough, against

Deta Hedman, who is a great player. I will have to gets a new shirts, it

has nine on it, now I will have to get some with ten on it. Things

haven't been easy for you in the last few years, was there ever a

time when you thought these glorious days would never return? I have had

a difficult time, but it has just in difficult, you feel that when things

go wrong, I have lost a lot of family members and things like that,

and it knocks you back. Now I am starting to get the fire back in my

belly. What must be amazing from your perspective, not only have you

regained the world title, your exploits over the last 14 or 15

years have paved the way for a new generation of women starts. The

standards are going up and up and you must be so proud of that. I try

to represent ladies darts as professionally and everything as I

can, and it is great to see more coming through, and we have that

platform now, and a very good platform of quality players. Enjoy
