The Hungarian Grand Prix Highlights Formula 1

-- Budapest, Hungary. Race day. Welcome to Budapest, stand

by, stand by if yesterday's anything to go by. Qualifying is under way on

the Hungaroring ring. A happy hunting ground for Lewis Hamilton.

But first he has to survive the first 18 minute session with the car

in one piece. Maldonado out in qualifying. Look at

the flame and smoke coming out of his car. Jump out! Jump out! Major

drama for Hamilton. A lot of teams are switching on the this soft tyre

to go for maximum performance. Bianchi has knocked him out! Weather

conditions are changing. We said before the start of the session

there was a 30% chance of rain, and it has arrived. He's off! Magnussen

might see that. He's crashed! Magnussen is in the barrier. He

crosses the line and he goes fast. Is Vettel going to have his first

pole position of the year or is it going to be stolen away once again

by Rosberg. He comes across the line and he's done it, by quite a margin

in the end. Nearly half a second, the advantage for Nico Rosberg.

There was lots of things going through my mind. We need to do

better. More than bad luck indeed. This is Lewis's team. They were

working through the night to the essentially build him another car.

Ten hours it took. David, what extraordinary bad luck Lewis is

having at the moment. It is difficult to understand why he would

be having all the bad luck in his car. Yes there's new technical in

Formula One but some of which the smaller teams are getting a handle

on it. It is just fate. These shots yesterday were shocking. Indeed.

There was a high-pressure fuel line injecting fuel into the engine. That

had a leak and the Marshalls had to work on that while Lewis walked

away. A great job the mechanics did to build an entirely new car. It

creates a lot of work overnight. Paddy said it is the worst mess of a

car he's seen. Realistically it is about damage limitation for Lewis

today. How faff do you think he can go? The weather is going to play a

part today. He would have been looking forward to a dry race, but

equally a wet race gives him an opportunity not to get on the podium

but to win this Grand Prix. Making the right decision at the right

time, Jenson Button won from 14th on the grid, so a lot can happen if it

does become a full wet race. The wind is certainly getting up. Let's

look at how the grid will line There are two starters from the pit

lane. Kevin Magnussen and Lewis Hamilton. That was quite a shunt he

took. They have had some work to do as well haven't they? They have

indeed. They have had to replace the chassis. He locked up on the wet on

the first corner. Corner. The speed and momentum took him into the

barrier. A very big hit. Rosberg managed to get away with it, but

Magnussen connected heavily. Rosberg coming across the front of screen,

catching the end of the tyre barrier. It was when the rain first

started. Is there anything Kevin could have done in terms of using

Rosberg as a gauge in anyway? That's what I said in commentary at the

time. The normally it is good to have a car in front of you because

you can see if they have an issue. But the speed, 200 miles per hour,

slip tyres, at that speed braking ten metres earlier not a big

difference. And Kimi not getting through to stage two is ludicrous

for Ferrari. I think his race engineer has to take it on the chin.

He has an English engineer who normally talks to him, but his

wife's having a baby so he is back home. Maybe that made the

difference, but as a team they have to be responsible for getting the

car out. He kept saying, are we alright, are we alright? But never

made the push to go. Aying, are we alright, are we alright? But never

made the push to go. You would - he had an average lap and Bianchi did a

great job. Let's look at the current state of the championship. The gap

between Nico and Lewis is 14 points. Hamilton has to keep that distance

as tight as possible, with Rosberg being the bookies' favourite to win

the race. Williams are third ahead of Ferrari.

Just before the drivers left the garages there was a huge downpour.

David and Tom caught up with them. I know this isn't lost on you but this

is your sort of condition, so what's the special conversation with your

engineers ahead of the race? It is not really our conditions. It is

still too wet. We struggled to get tyre temperature in these

conditions. It is so tricky, because there's really wet bits and dry

bits. What's your strategy at the start? Go fast. What were the track

conditions like on the way to the grid? Seemed to be completely dry.

Sector one and the last sector is full wet. We'll see. I think not the

wets. If there is no rain it will be dry quite quickly. Do you think you

can take the fight to Rosberg in these condition? We'll try. A

downpour on the way to the grid, more forecast on the way to the

race. What's the discussion with your engineers? It was out on

extreme and a bit difficult to know what's coming but for now we have to

go with the best judgment with the laps that we had and see where we

go. Six pole positions for Nico Rosberg. This is h third. He seems

to have the Midas touch at the moment but has to stay out of

trouble today. He's got 19 drivers here and two in the pit learnings

including the human roller coast they are is Lewis Hamilton to deal.

Jenny and Tom will be informing us from the pit lane and Dixie and Ben

from the communication box. Nico Rosberg is aiming to win back

to back grass for the first time in his career and do the double of the

German and Hungarian Grand Prix for the first time in a decade. We are

on intermediate tires but they've not moved away. Does he have a

stalled car? Everyone else is away OK. The team may get a chance to get

him on his way. He will drop to the tail of the field. I have no engine.

It just went off. Daniil Kyvat being pushed into the pit lane. They will

try to push that into the pit. It will be a third car if they can get

frit the pit lane. News from Ben. I'm parked in the pit lane next to

Lewis Hamilton, whose engine has just fired up. He'll be heading down

to the hit lane exit any moment. My eyes are looking up as much as down,

because I've looked at the radar, the next bout of rain is 30

kilometres away to the south-east. According to the FIA wealth

forecasters it is going to hit the track in 14 or perhaps as late as

1425. We are going to get rain soon. Lewis Hamilton waiting in the pits.

They are keeping the tyre blankets on as long as possible. He isn't

allowed to do the formation lap so he has to wait until all the cars

have passed the pit lane exit before he'll be released. It is drier on

the front straight. Not expecting too many difficulties off the line

but that concertina effect into a tight first corner. Once you are

carrying momentum on a lot of weight in the car, 100 kilos of fuel at

least, some may have underfueled for this race, because they are not

expecting it to be fuel limited. When you run in damp conditions your

lap time is slower, you use less fuel on any given lap. Intermediate

tyres confirmed on Lewis Hamilton's car as well, so the whole field,

whether starting on the grid or from if pit lane have chosen the

intermediate wet tyre. This means they do not have to run both types

of dry weather tyre during the race. As soon as you've used one of the

wet tyres the obligation to use both types of dry tyre goes out of the

window. They can choose now. If the track dries they can stay on the

options. Per pose reminded by Force India not to pull into the empty

grid slot left by Daniil Kyvat. It is Rosberg and Vettel on the front

row. We get ready for the start of the

Hungarian Grand Prix in tricky wet conditions. And away we go! Rosberg

gets off the line. Line. Bottas has made a good start. Vettel trying to

go to the outside. Hamilton waiting to start this race. Bottas trying to

go to the outs into the first corner but has he got second from Sebastian

Vettel? I think he has. Valtteri Bottas challenging Rosberg as Alonso

on the move starting fifth. Now Alonso is trying to take third from

vet investment goes around the outside and he's done it I think. He

should have the inside line for the right-hander at the bottom of the

hill. Fernando Alonso always mighty in these conditions. Bottas and

Alonso using a according line. Hamilton's gone off! He's gone off

at turn two! It looks a like there might have been contact towards the

inside barrier. Has he lost it in the run down to turn two? Vettel up

to the chicane. Vettel has passed the Ferrari. That's a surprise.

Jenson Button is behind them, so Button has had a good start into

fifth position. Ricciardo into sixth place in the other Red Bull. Then

Hulkenberg is in seven. Look at the amount of spray on this section. .

A long -- a lot of standing water there. Raikkonen is in 14th

position. In the background you will see the Ferrari. Up ahead of them...

A slide for Perez, who gets away from it. The in the ground

Magnussen, but Hamilton is well down. If you have any damage, Lewis,

let us know. Top left. I checked my wing. The brakes just gave up. Copy

that. Brakes are cold. Brakes are cold. Lewis Hamilton coming out of

turn one. Struggling for wheel spin. As he goes under the bridge, he'll

brake. Locks up and the momentum throws him both ways. You can see

the front left-wing touches the barrier but didn't appear to break

off completely. He got away with that. He's already got past a few

cars. He's passed Magnussen as well. So he is up into 18th place. He

passed Ericsson, Kyvat, Magnussen and Chilton. Hamilton up to 17th

position and making progress. Still got good vibration somewhere. He

might not be fully happy with the car but he is lapping a quickly at

this point. Quicker than the cars around him. We are riding on board

with Hamilton as he goes after Kamui Kobayashi in the Caterham. He comes

through four up to the chicane. You can see the front wing end inner

part left side is slightly damaged. You can see the separation from the

flap. He's broken a little bit but nowhere near as bad as Rosberg

through turn 13. Up into the last turn. The his gap last time around

was just under six seconds. He has taken a with whopping second in the

first two sectors so opening up the gap nicely.

Ferrari. He is in the same boat as pretty much those around him and he

has moved into 13th position. Knocking on the door of the top ten.

Sergio Perez is not that much further up the road. Let's see how

this began. It is turn 12 into 13. He was on the inside line. Kimi

Raikkonen goes wide on the karting line and Hamilton stays on the

inside. Kimi Raikkonen was able to power back, but in the end the

all-important DRS activation point and Hamilton had that. An accident

for Marcus Ericsson in the Caterham. He has hit the wall very hard. Turn

3 at the bottom of the hill and it is a safety car and everybody will

be gathered up behind the safety car. Do we see some pit stops for

the slick tyres behind the safety car? A medical car is out as well.

The race leader, Nico Rosberg, is picked up, and he did not come in.

Jenson Button has decided to come in. So has Daniel Ricciardo. Just

about everybody else putting the slicks on. It is the yellow marking

on the tyre. It is the softer of the two compounds available and Nico

Rosberg is going to lose out. You can see the marshals. They were

doing the double thumbs up indicating the driver was

communicating. We saw him walk away. Hamilton has come in for those

option tyres as well. Everybody apart from Nico Rosberg.

Side-by-side coming out of the pits. Niko Hulkenberg with Perez. Perez

just managing to get out in front of Gutierrez. The others did not come

in. This is crucial. They are removing this car much faster than

we would have anticipated. On this replay you see him losing down force

behind the Lotus. It has a wobble. There is a big impact to the front

of the car. You saw the head and neck system helping. This looked

like a slow stop for Jenson Button and are not very safe release. That

will be interesting for the stewards to have a look at. You cannot put in

danger any of the mechanics and the people servicing the cars. The guys

who have gone to slicks, this looks like we could have the safety car

coming in. You can see the response to that. All of those who stayed out

are heading in. They looked as if they have to do it as well. This

turns things around because they will be at the back of the queue, so

a complete turnaround. It is a good stop from Sebastian Vettel. Where

Isabel Thierry Bottas? I think he has lost out. Oh, yes, he has lost

out hugely as a result of the slow stop. Two seconds slower than those

around. Sebastian Vettel has come out in seventh position. Nico

Rosberg is in fifth position. Clearly he has lost some crucial

places. Daniel Ricciardo is losing this race because Jenson Button had

a slow stop. RADIO: We are expecting some rain, difficult to be certain

on intensity. The front four cars stayed out and they are still on

inter. Ricciardo is at the front. JENSON BUTTON: Let's hope the

weather forecast is OK. Jenson Button is on intermediates. McLaren

have done a completely different strategy to everyone else. They are

bargaining on the rain coming. Correction, Magnussen on the

intermediates has not been into the pits yet. The safety car will be

coming in at the end of this lap. Ericsson's car has been cleared

away. There is an issue with Nico Rosberg's car. Look at the steam

coming off. And a crash for a Lotus. It looks like Romain Grosjean. This

will leave the safety car out there. This has happened under

safety car conditions. He was on a slick tyre. He has been caught out

by the wet that is still on the track. The safety car stays out a

bit longer. Just caught the end of the accident for Romain Grosjean. It

turned him around. He is proud of the Grand Prix, joining Ericsson in

retirement. The safety car will be coming in on this lap, we think, as

long as nobody else crashes. Daniel Ricciardo is the race leader and is

on slick tyres and is being chased by Jenson Button who has switched on

another set of intermediates. He will be in trouble as the race track

dries out. We are getting ready for the restart and it is Daniel

Ricciardo who leads them as they come out of the final turn and he

launches his way to get this race started once again. It is Lap 14 and

Ricciardo leads with button in second place. Huge pressure on all

those on slicks. Sebastian Vettel going on the outside. Button has got

passed on the intermediates. They are still working at the moment and

he has to make the most of these laps. Magnussen will try and do the

same on his more worn intermediates. RADIO: Rain looking less likely, so

we should push. They are safe on fuel. Nico Rosberg is in fifth

position and he is under pressure from Jean-Eric Vergne. Sebastian

Vettel is through. Niko Hulkenberg found his way through somehow. It is

difficult on the restart to get the tyres to work in these difficult

conditions. Niko Hulkenberg has dropped down into 11th place. Jenson

Button leads, but he is not escaping by as much as he needs to make a pit

stop. It is quite good for Daniel Ricciardo. For Jenson Button it is

not wet enough. Nico Rosberg has a little look at Sebastian Vettel.

RADIO: We need your feedback on these tyres, let us know when they

are dead. Here comes Nico Rosberg. He makes a move on Kevin Magnussen.

Magnussen is still in the intermediate tyres and he is pushing

Nico Rosberg out wide and that could give somebody else a chance. The

Toro Rosso is on the right-hand side and Nico Rosberg him through. He is

being cautious. Hamilton is not far behind him. Alonso goes through.

There is only one car between Rosberg and Hamilton, would you

believe it? It is Sebastian Vettel between Nico Rosberg and Hamilton.

The British bulldog, never quit spirit. Hamilton is right back in

this race. Sebastian Vettel is struggling in terms of the battery

pack. He is looking for advice from the team in the middle of this.

Jenson Button is leading the Grand Prix. We expect him to come in at

the end of the lap. Kevin Magnussen is holding the whole group up.

Jenson Button comes under pressure from Ricciardo. This will cost him

20 seconds of total time. Ricciardo is all over the back of him. This

will put button to the back of the field. It puts Felipe Massa into

second place. Daniel Ricciardo leads the hunky Aryan Grand Prix. Felipe

Massa is in second place. It is a huge gap, Magnussen has held them

all back. Here comes Nico Rosberg, side-by-side with Jean-Eric Vergne.

Hamilton is in the mix and Nico Rosberg lost his place again to

Jean-Eric Vergne. He will have Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton right

behind him. Nico Rosberg has to play the long game. He wants to win the

Grand Prix, but the championship is a possibility. That lock-up with

Alonso could be very costly. Niko Hulkenberg has stopped out on track.

It could be the first time this year he will not score points, leaving

Alonso is the only driver to have scored in every Grand Prix this

year. Through the middle section of the chat. Sebastian Vettel is in

between Rosberg and Hamilton. What a shame, his first retirement of the

season, Hulkenberg. It looks as though it may have been a mistake or

contact with another car. Let's see what went wrong. Out of 13 there is

a battle between him and his team-mate. Magnussen goes into the

pits and there is contact between them. Perry is doing a fantastic

rally style slide. Rule number one is never make contact with your

team-mate. He whacked the back of Sebastian Vettel's car. This is

Maldonado making a move on Bianchi. Did he complete the move? Oh, no,

you could feel that was coming. Maldonado's smashing season

continues. Jules Bianchi with the benefit of hindsight, you might want

to take a slightly wider line. They are running slower than in

qualifying. Part of that is the fuel effect and part of that is the

track. They are trying to learn the revolution of the tyre in these

conditions. That is well over 140 miles an hour in normal, dry

conditions. Jenson Button, after having to switch onto the slick

tyres, is currently in 14th place. Not only the Red Bull in trouble

with break temperature, the Mercedes in trouble with break temperature.

Hamilton not able to get past. Rosberg is not able to get past

Jean-Eric Vergne ahead of him. You have to follow the wheel tracks of

the car in front. He has to find another way to put him under

pressure. You have got to be super confident to be the first man to

start running off the tarmac and use those curves. Sebastian Vettel

touched wide. Not much chance for Hamilton to overtake. Jean-Eric

Vergne in the Toro Rosso is doing everything asked of him, this is

outstanding for him. Jean-Eric Vergne is in fourth place

at a time of year when driver contracts are being looked at. He's

got to keep his head and see what he can do here. He's punching above his

weight in terms of machinery. These weather conditions neutralising the

performance advantage of the Mercedes. A couple of world

champions putting pressure on the back of what could be the world

champion this season. Nico Rosberg. Nico Rosberg holding on the fifth

place. A crash! Sergio Perez crashes out of the last corner and we will

definitely have safety car again. Sergio Perez hopefully OK. It was a

heavy impact against the wall. Well, we have got a long way to go for

this race. There is no need for the drivers to use the other tyre. That

debris will take some time to clean up. He was fastest man on the first

sector, I suspect he touched the wet on the outside of turn 14 and was

spun around and ejected on the wall. It is good to see him getting out of

the car. That was a hefty whack. That is carbon against concrete but

he is fine. This may be too early for anybody to take advantage from

putting on another set of tyres. Unlikely. It is a double non-finish

for Force India. After having such a great season it has gone very wrong

here. Both Hulkenberg and Perez are out. Tom? It is going to be marginal

whether they can get to the end of the race on the tyres they've put

on. Pirelli reckoned if they can get to 30, but 23 is difficult. Another

look at the accident. He went wide and touched the water. That spins

car around. At that speed and amount of energy in the car there's very

little the driver can do. The Ricciardo into the pits for another

set... He has to be held. But he did the right thing, as the Williams was

coming in. Felipe Massa coming in from second place. Fernando Alonso

thing, as the Williams was coming in. Felipe Massa coming in from

second place. Fernando Alonso presumably - Alonso has stayed out

David, interestingly. He was the man making good pace. Under normal

conditions these tyres have a life expectancy of around 20 laps. That

previous during Grand Prix racing as the fuel burns down Ricciardo will

have to make another stop this afternoon. There is no way he can

make it to the end of the Grand Prix on that set of option tyres. Maybe

Alonso trying to take it further and split the difference. The safety car

I think. Button just had that didn't he? He did. That means that Button

is 12th at the moment. Bottas 13th. Kobayashi's car has come to is a

start at turn 12. That means that Chilton leads the Caterham group.

Ericsson is out. We've lost both Caterhams, if that's confirmed. He's

getting instructions as to which way is home I think. What's the quickest

way to the airport. Fernando Alonso is the man in control of that

restart. Initially he goes deep into the last corner. Watch Hamilton

immediately on the attack as he tries to get past Sebastian Vettel,

who has a pass by Ricciardo. You can see where the dry line is. On the

inside here, the favoured overtaking spot, it is still damp. Hamilton

close to the back of Vettel. Behind them you've got Felipe Massa.

Estaban Gutierrez is returning in 8th place. He hasn't been that close

since Monaco, where he crashed out of the Grand Prix and there was no

opportunity to score any points. Behind them we've got Kvyat. This

lead group is what we are focusing on at the moment. Alonso leading a

Grand Prix. We haven't seen much of which that this year. I think the

first time a Ferrari-engined car has lend Alonso will take full advantage

if he can here. It's been a lean period for Fernando. Lined up fifth

on the grid. Is there one on new tyres behind me? Ricciardo is the

car behind on new tyres. But you want to use the advantage of a new

tyre in the first coup of lapse. Yres. But you want to use the

advantage of a new tyre in the first coup of lapse -- couple of laps. In

the meantime Rosberg is lining up Jean-Eric Vergne in the Toro Rosso.

Again no way through. It is fascinating. Despite the advantage

that Mercedes have in terms of the car and the power unit, Hungary is

proving as difficult as ever a track on which to overtake, particularly

when you've still got some of these areas where it is not fully dry, on

the inside of the corners. Hamilton still stuck behind Vettel. Then

Ricciardo following them. Followed by Felipe Massa. Bottas, by the way,

is all the way down in 13th place. The Finn has been on the podium in

the last few events and looked to be in great shape in the early part of

this race. Perhaps trying to go a long, long way on his harder medium

compound tyres Raikkonen behind Gutierrez into the chicane at five

and six. A massive kick there. Does he lose a position to Sutil? Seems

to get away wit. Kimi Raikkonen is asking his team if he has a

left-tyre puncture. They have telemetry. They are saying no, and

he's saying there must be something wrong with his car. He has done 21

laps on that set of tyres. Some of which the race leaders are due a pit

stop. Alonso has done 23 laps on these tyres and Vergne would think

would be getting to the end of the life of his tyres, because he's done

25. All of this group will be heading into the pits soon. This is

working out perfectly for Alonso, he's got that gap up top just over

three seconds as Vergne holds the group behind. We need to be quick at

that point. Think about how you use the tyres. OK. Ricciardo is well

placed here. He's on much fresher tyres. We all know this group in

front of him is due into the pits soon. When they do, he's being asked

to really attack. It could be just the right moment for Daniel

Ricciardo. His tyres are 14 laps fresher than those around him. It

gives him more compound to play with. Interestingly Hamilton has

just set the fastest first sector of anybody. None of which the group has

come into the pits, so they are getting good mileage out of this.

All the teams will be monitoring to see how far they can get on the

tooifrmts Jean-Eric Vergne is losing four tenths of which a second to

Fernando Alonso. Rosberg behind him. Started on pole. Led material stages

but the timing of the first safety car didn't work in his favour. He

had to do another lap while those fifth and further back were able to

make an early pit stop. He's found himself stuck here behind Jean-Eric

Vergne, but it's not the time to make a desperate lunge. This race

probably more than most, but it may well shift to his team-mate, Daniel

Ricciardo, as having the best opportunity here if the strategy

works in his favour. No sign of which any rain around at the moment,

but we do know there's a possibility we could get another shower before

the end of the Grand Prix. How many more laps Alonso going to go here?

He's opened up a 3.6 second advantage over this group. Rosberg,

close to Vergne this time. His tyres may well be going off as well.

Mercedes are ready. I think that looks like Rosberg. Box, box, box,

but do the opposite. Do the opposite to Vergne means if Vergne had come

in ahead of you, stay out. But Vergne didn't come in... Oh, Red

Bull! Vettel has spun but not hit anything! If he grazed to wall, it

would be interesting to see. My goodness me! Vettel vets, a very

rare mistake. They were trying to get a bit of stuff out of the brake

duct. It looked like a front wing adjustment. Rosberg rejoins and now

we are going to see him put the hammer down. He is on a fresh set of

tyres. He rejoins in 13th place, on another set of the soft tyres. He's

got to really go for it. Let's look at what happened to Vettel, being

chased by Hamilton. On the artificial grass, it goes around.

Just a kiss of the concrete and he gathers his senses. But under

pressure from Lewis Hamilton gets on toe that artificial grass where the

water is. The rear suspension is strong in certain ways. We are going

to see frit an on-board point of view. A massive correction. Full

opposite lock. Waiting. Contact, and off he goes. Have you hit anything?

Negative, but I've transported the tyres. Understood. It is all so calm

isn't it? He so nearly did what Sergio Perez did. And Gutierrez is

out. Estaban Gutierrez, who was running in the points, presumably

the time the car's let him down. Lewis Hamilton tries to move in on

Vergne certain. Vergne has control of the corner. Where's the grip

level? Does he have the speed? Vergne will hold the outside a

little bit into. Turn two. A bit of group there still. Lock up from

Vergne. Great stuff. Good racing from Jean-Eric Vergne. One of the

few chances he's had to race against the top flight drivers. Lewis

Hamilton, round the outside of turn four. Last year we saw Romain

Grosjeans do that, but this time Lewis Hamilton pulse it off. He knew

he had to get past Vergne. Especially when he put a wheel on

the grass. I wondered if he wondered if the back end would let go, but he

judged it beautifully. Ricciardo is on fresher tyres and he's got to put

in some quick laps around the other guys' pit stops. Would like to

imagine it would be easier for him. Go to the tyres and keep the

temperatures down. You are in position, you can't do much, try to

save your tyres. He has rejoined in 13th place. He should be able to go

to the end op that tyre. Vergne is in at last. From second place after

driving a superb stint. That's an interesting strategy, Red Bull

covering the bases. Daniel Ricciardo will have to stop again this

afternoon to put another set of the option bases. Daniel Ricciardo will

prime - his choice. Started on interimmediate. Who knows, might

have to stop again if it rains, but if it stays dry the plan is for

Sebastien Vettel to go to the chequered flag. Just in front of

Vettel, both on the prime tyre. One more lap, one more lap. And then it

will be the pit stop, the second pit stop for Lewis Hamilton and the only

other pit stop he will need before the end of this race. Same story for

Alonso, who leads. DRS is available and it is working. Here comes

Rosberg on Bottas to take the place, I think, down the inside. Gives him

a bit of a squeeze on the exit of the corner but gets through clean

and Rosberg moves up into 9th position as a result of that. In

fact 8th now, because Jenson Button has made a pit stop and has rejoined

in 13th place. Rosberg is passed one. Has to pass several more to

have a chance of challenging his team-mate Lewis Hamilton later in

this Grand Prix. Hammer down for Nico Rosberg. We've heard it asked

for Hammertime before for Lewis Hamilton, but it is Nico Rosberg who

needs to get on wit. No sign of rain at this point. Fernando Alonso is

still the leader. He has a slight advantage. Probably another one or

two laps at this pace. Go for it, Luiz. As much as you can. Alonso has

decided to come in. He's done 29 laps, an amazingly long stint on the

soft tyre. Will he go for another set of soft? Sing he will. In these

temperatures and conditions they are getting more life out of the tyres

than they saw here on Friday. Kimi Raikkonen. That brings him out in

fifth position. Hamilton is. In let's watch the pit stop. It is a

little bit slow but he gets away clean. N let's watch the pit stop.

strategy there for Mercedes. But he will still be out ahead of Rosberg.

You can see the white side-wall tyre. That's interesting. The

mechanic working to the last moment to try to get the brake tape off the

brake duct. which he will have to come in before

the end of the Grand Prix. It is interesting what Ferrari have done,

they have gone for the fresh attire. -- fresh tyre. Daniel Ricciardo

leads the race at the moment. His gap is back to Felipe Massa, so he

has got something like a ten second advantage. Ricciardo has to get

these laps in as quickly as possible. Hamilton is looking very

good for a potential victory here today. What a turnaround if he can

achieve that. Sergio Perez is now talking to Jenny.

That was an awful crash. Tell us are you OK? What is the car like? I am

really sorry for my team and sad for them. They did an amazing job and I

am sorry now. It has been a very difficult weekend for us. Definitely

points were possible today. The race was going OK up until that point.

The track conditions were improving lap by lap. In the end it was not

enough. You had a bit of contact with your team-mate. Did that affect

the handling of the car? Yes, it did. It was quite a big accident. It

was going all right until that point. It is my fault. Are you a

king? No, thanks, everything is all right. Kimi Raikkonen has made a pit

stop. He did a long stint on his tyres. Sebastian Vettel will have a

bit of an edge to get past him. Kimi Raikkonen does not want to give up

that place and Sebastian Vettel is forced to go round the outside. Kimi

Raikkonen and shuts the door and he takes the place from Vettel. That

was brilliant stuff. Kimi Raikkonen knew he had the benefit of more grip

from those tyres. That can only happen with a professional when you

note the width of the car. Some really interesting tyre strategies

at work. Daniel Ricciardo leads the Grand Prix by 12.5 seconds. If he is

to continue, he will have to do the longest stint from anybody on a soft

tyre. It seems unlikely, but the talk on the radio sounds as if he is

trying to manage his tyres. They are hoping he can pull it off. That was

a surprise for the team, they were not ready for him there. They are

not happy that these medium compound tyres will get to the end. They have

to make another pit stop. This will drop him down into the lower reaches

of the top ten. I wonder if he will be inside the top ten? He goes for

the same compound. That surprises me a little bit. He goes for the harder

compound tyre and is back out again. He is ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and is

in sixth position. A good strategy, perhaps, from Williams. Hamilton is

in third. Nico Rosberg is in fourth. Bottas is in fifth, Massa is sixth

place and Kimi Raikkonen is in seventh place. Sebastian Vettel is

in eighth place. Vergne, a star in the early stages, is in ninth place

and button is in 10th place. Hamilton is on the prime. Nico

Rosberg is pushing up against the back of him. If Hamilton does not

want to get too much into the dirty air of that Ferrari. ROSBERG: He is

not letting me through. RADIO: Let him past. That is a tough call by

the team. Personally I think that is an unfair call, let him through. A

lot can happen in this Grand Prix. Also he is fighting for a World

Championship and if Nico Rosberg drops back further, it helps Lewis

Hamilton. I think somebody coming on the radio and sailing, listen to the

long game is one thing, but presumably the race engineer has

been told that I management. That puts pressure on the race driver.

Now Lewis has to either disobey his race engineer, knowing fine his race

engineer is not going to tell him to do that without being told by the

management. A tough call to make, pressurising the race engineers into

breaking that bond of trust between the driver and the guys and works

with. That situation was always going to arise this year. Daniel

Ricciardo is saying it is his left rear that is the limitation. But his

team has told him to stay out there, the pace is good. Hamilton has told

his team, tell him to get closer, I am not going to let him get by.

Daniel Ricciardo has done a long stint on the soft tyres. He goes

back out on the soft tyre and he will come back out in fourth

position. But we think Nico Rosberg will have to make another stop. That

was Nico Rosberg going through in front. Daniel with another set of

the option tyres on board. Fernando Alonso is the race leader and he has

a 2.8 second advantage over Lewis Hamilton. There is the race leader,

Fernando Alonso in control. Can he possibly have on? VETTEL: I do not

think we have that much to lose. RADIO: Understood. Sebastian Vettel

is looking to go all the way to the end, which is what we thought they

were up to. Ricciardo is in fourth place. Nico Rosberg comes in.

Ricciardo will now come through in third position as Nico Rosberg makes

another pit stop. Another set of options going on. He will drop down

the order, but how far? He is going to try and beat the Williams, next

up. He is behind Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. He is in seventh

place with plenty of work to do. Kimi Raikkonen has done 16 laps on

these tyres. Nico Rosberg has a fresh set of tyres. It was a set

their use in qualifying, so it is not a brand-new set, but they will

be quicker than those on Kimi Raikkonen's car. Ricciardo is

starting to light up the screens. It was 3.7 seconds, but now it is 2.4

seconds now. Has Daniel Ricciardo got what it takes to pull a pass on

Hamilton? RADIO: Think about how you use the tyres. Hamilton is catching

up on Alonso. The top three cars are catching up on each other. Difficult

strategy with Ricciardo on the fresher tyres. It is a Ferrari

sandwich. They are all closing up on Bottas. You can seek Kimi Raikkonen

and the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg close behind. See how much you can

get on the power. Felipe Massa should not be struggling to much. He

is on the harder, compound tyre. Nico Rosberg has got so much more

grip. He held a tighter line on that corner. Look how much they are all

bearing down on Valterri Bottas. He will have to go into the pits. He

will go backwards quickly at this stage. The top three are Alonso,

Hamilton and Ricciardo. We have got one race going on for the win Mac

and another race for fourth place. Bottas will be coming in at the end

of this lap. Just taking the pit lane entry. Nico

Rosberg will get a double toe. Felipe Massa has the DRS available

because of his team-mate pulling into the pit. Nico Rosberg having a

look. Kimi Raikkonen opens the door and gives him space. It looked for a

moment there could be a tangle. Kimi Raikkonen was very aware of where

the Mercedes was. Now he has got to try and get past the Williams and

Felipe Massa. He has never had particular luck at this circuit and

on some occasions it has gone horribly wrong. He had a big

accident in 2009. In 2008 he led the race when the engine blew up. But

Felipe Massa wants to get whatever he can out of this handy Aryan race.

He has got the straight line speed, but Rosberg has got the grip.

Ricciardo has got the gap down to 0.9. Do you want to watch the battle

for the top three or this battle for four, five and six? You can see how

much Daniel Ricciardo is catching Hamilton. Can Nico Rosberg overtake

here? He is trying to get into fourth place. There is nothing that

Felipe Massa can fight with. Nico Rosberg is into fourth. He is 23

seconds behind the group that is fighting for the lead. I do not

think there is much chance of him closing that up within nine laps,

but he will be trying. This is Kimi Raikkonen and that pass. In the end

Kimi Raikkonen was not able to get the car back. What a showdown this

promises to be between Alonso, Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo. They

are in good shape. There was concern early on that Ricciardo had battery

problems, but so far, so good. It was here in Hungary that the

hostility between them became open combat. Alonso cutting the chicane.

Will he have gained an advantage there? Let's hope it is a warning

rather than having to give up the position. He was not under pressure

in terms of somebody trying to overtake him. He raises his hand to

say, I am going straight. Daniel Ricciardo lining up Hamilton. He

tried to go on the outside, but he ran out of space. We knew he was up

for having a go and he has put a clear mark in the sand for Hamilton.

It has also caused Hamilton to drop back a bit from Alonso. RADIO: Keep

this pace up, you will catch the top three in the end. Rosberg is so

fast, that his team thinks he will be with them on the last lap. That

shows the benefit of clean air and fresher tyres.

Ricciardo has good tyres. I can't see he is going to suddenly slow

down. His 11th lap on these tyres, Ricciardo. Alonso continues to lead

the Hungarian Grand Prix in the Ferrari. Across the line he comes

before to win a Grand Prix from the pit lane. A race has been won from

22nd on the grid, the equivalent of which where he was. That was back in

1983. Ricciardo has another chance here. Hamilton is struggling.

Definitely struggling for grip, Lewis Hamilto Ricciardo sees an

opportunity opening up for his Red Bull. Rosberg is still catching them

at just under three second a lap but it is probably not enough to join in

the fun and games on the last lap. Massa is fifth. Raikkonen in sixth

Ricciardo around the outside and he's done it! He's taken second

place from Lewis Hamilton. A brilliant manoeuvre and now he goes

chasing after race leader Fernando Alonso. He's got it in him for the

win. We are watching one of the great races surely of Formula One.

Daniel Ricciardo, OK he didn't qualify as far down as some of the

others, but that was a great move by him, David. That's a world champion

of the future move, undoubtedly. Magic from Dani Ricciardo. Look at

the reaction. APPLAUSE Red Bull are loving this

Australian who has joined the team from this year. Remember the battle

we saw in Germany? Alonso versus Ricciardo. This time it is for

victory. The man at the front of which that image in the Red Bull

mechanics clapping is the number one on Sebastian Vettel's car. These

guys look at the team as a whole. Fernando Alonso has been leading in

for a long time. Ricciardo started in fourth. He's got a bit of a run

towards the first. And he's on the inside! He outbreaks the Ferrari. He

holds the apex and makes it look so simple. Daniel Ricciardo has taken

the lead in the Hungarian Grand Prix and help looks all set for his

second victory this season! Brilliant. One word - brilliant.

What can you say about the man from Perth? He won in Canada. He took the

lead with three laps to go and he's done it again. A brilliant call in

terms of what they did with the tyres. Look how he's getting away.

He's on the fresher tyres. Now it is about whether Lewis Hamilton can get

past the Ferrari for second. That Ferrari is desperate for grip now.

He's all over the place, David. He's under severe pressure. The tyres

have hit the wall, or hit the cliff, that's the expression the drivers

use. Rosberg could still join the back of this little mini dice for

second. Rosberg is much closer on the fresh tyres. Look how hard he's

trying. Fastest lap after fastest lap set by Nico Rosberg. Even his

tyres will be beginning to give up their best and we've got lots to

look at. Ricciardo leads with two laps to go. Alonso with just a tiny

advantage over Lewis Hamilton. The gap to Rosberg only 1-and-a-half

seconds. Hamilton hunts around behind the Ferrari but he's

struggling for grip. You can see on that tyre, both them in different

areas of the track are struggling. Hamilton struggles on this section.

Is it is on the back part of the circuit where Alonso seems to

struggle for grip. Rosberg is bearing down on them.

What a situation to be in, David. Which one would you like to be in at

this stage? I would like to be Daniel Ricciardo in front. If it had

to be one of these? Rosberg we know has a much better set of tyres. All

the momentum. It is going to be surely easy picking to get past

Hamilton and Alonso. We saw in Bahrain there was no

quarter given between Rosberg and ham happen. It is all about every

point this in this year's World Championship remember. He's not in a

position to do anything other than just keep it between the white

lines. And Rosberg is going to have the grip as they come out of the

final turn and go on to the last lap. Wow! This is going to be

amazing. Is it a big enough gap? I think could be. Rosberg might not

have to use DRS. We go a the final lap and Rosberg is trying to pass

his team-mate. He's just within DRS range. He's trying to get a good

drive through one and launch into two. He's got the better line,

Rosberg. Hamilton is going to have to go defensive into two. The two

title contenders wheel to wheel. Hamilton defends into turn two. On

the outside, Hamilton squeezes Ricciardo out, says you are not

coming through on this last lap, no way am I allowing that. Rosberg has

to try again. A racing driver glove slap to the face on Rosberg. Rosberg

trying to do what Ricciardo had done. Alonso given a bit of

breathing space because of this. Alonso is heading for his best

finish of the year. Only his second podium of the season. Is it is from

fifth place on the grid, as it was in China when he scored a podium

finish. But Hamilton and Rosberg, which of the two is going to end up

ahead? For Rosberg, le still be leading the points whichever way

they finish, but Hamilton will have closed the gap if they stay the way

they are now. Daniel Ricciardo is way out in front of them. It is

going to be Daniel Ricciardo to take victory. He's waving already! Daniel

Ricciardo wins Hungarian Grand Prix! Wow! Two victories this year. Canada

and Hungary. Second place goes to Fernando Alonso. A brilliant effort

from him, a stunning drive. Lewis Hamilton holds on for the final

podium slot ahead of Nico Rosberg. Hamilton is third. Rosberg is

fourth. Mercedes are beaten for only the second time this year. Vettel

and Bottas fighting here. This is for seventh place. Bottas on the

fresher tyre. Vettel struggle on tyres that are quite old in terms

of. He's done some 36 laps. Can Bottas get the exit? I don't think

he has enough here. It looks as though the other Red Bull of

Sebastian Vettel is going to finish in seventh place. Raikkonen was

sixth ahead of them. Massa was fifth. Fifth. Bottas settles for 8th

this time but Ricciardory, his second win in five Grands Prix. Yes!

You can absorb this one a bit quicker, the second one. The first

is just a blur but today I knew what was going on as soon as I hit the

lead. I was like, OK. When I cross the line, I know what's happening

and I'm going to enjoy this one. An eventful day. Indeed, you've got the

speed and the move os. We saw great battles with Lewis Hamilton and the

lines. Talk us through the outside of turn two. It is the one that

didn't quite come off. Oh, this is the one that didn't come off. Sorry.

The first attempt didn't really work. I had fresher tyres to make it

happen. I thought I Ghent a bit hot again. Had the grip on the outside.

sandwich with Fernando and Lewis and knew if I didn't make quick work of

Alonso I could be at square one. It wasn't an easy drive by any stretch

I'll spend the holiday wisely now and enjoy it more. You have yourself

decided not to stop in the safety car, so we take some risk on the

strategy and it paid off at the end with the second place that tastes

like a victory. 12 laps to the end we were debating what to do. To stop

and secure the fourth place or not to stop and maybe ensure in fourth

place. That's what the strategy on the computer was saying. Is I said,

OK, if the computer said the same position, let me lead the race until

the last moment and we'll see what happened. Lewis Hamilton, you were

incredible today. From the pit lane to the podium. A sensation. But it

was so tough out there wasn't it? This whole weekend's been pretty

tough but I'm grateful I got through nit one piece, just about. You

managed to put the woes of yesterday behind you. When you went out it

there was raining but from the onset we can look at how difficult it was

for you. These were terrible conditions. We all had our heart in

our mouths. You don't even know where my heart was, mate. Mate. A

silly mistake. My brakes were cold. Just frozen really. This was a bit

risky, I didn't know where he was but today I needed to take some

risks. What were you thinking here? We heard you saying on the radio he

looked like he gained an advantage. He looked like he gained an

advantage I was surprised he was able to keep it. This was a defining

part of the race, showing how strongly you wanted to keep

position. I was fighting so hard to catch and overtake Fernando but it

where he was. I was second and he was third or whatever. We were in

the same race. If I had let him past, he would have beaten me today.

We have done his pit stop and caught me much sooner and got by. Were you

surprised to be asked? I am and I still am. We'll sit down and talk

about it. You've closed the gap in the championship to 11 points now.

Who would have thought yesterday when the car was on fire I would be

able to do that. A great comeback. Be I don't know, I can't explain it.

Things happen for a reason and I guess today was really a showing of

that. You can go into the holiday period very happy. Congratulations

Lewis Hamilton. It was incredible. use it, so it was a pity. Lewis

Hamilton was given the order to let you passed and he did not. We have

to discuss that, I cannot speak about that now. You are still in the

lead by 11 points. How do you feel going into the break? At the moment

I am still very annoyed because I am still on the last lap. But I will be

OK for the holiday. What did you think about that? Do

you think Lewis should have let him buy? Lewis was looking at Fernando

Alonso and he was thinking, I might win this race. He was not interested

in where his team-mate was going to finish and Nico Rosberg was not the

quickest and coming up to him. If he had been all over the back of him,

would it have been different? You sense as a driver whether someone is

hassling you and put you under pressure and Nico Rosberg was not

doing enough to get Lewis's attention. A directive has to come

from one of the directors of the company. Asking an engineer to tell

him to move over is never going to happen. Racing drivers have a good

relationship with their engineers and they know they can push back. He

has closed the gap. Sebastian Vettel could have been in that mix. Easily.

He was ahead of Daniel Ricciardo when he had a big spin on the last

corner. He was on the Astroturf many times. It holds the water a bit

longer. Perez hit the wall hard and he took a chunk of concrete out of

the wall and managed to continue. Some good strategy and poor strategy

and McLaren falling to the poor strategy. Arguably they should have

split the two drivers and covered the baiters, but it was the wrong

call today. And disappointing for Williams. I am not 100% sure where

it went wrong by them, but going onto the harder compound and cooler

conditions, it did not help. It was an absolutely astonishing race.
