The Hungarian Grand Prix - Qualifying Highlights Formula 1

Hamilton crashes! Hamilton has crashed in qualifying. I hit the

brakes. The second half of the 20 14th season gets underway at

Hockenheim. Lewis Hamilton starts at 20th. Look at Magnusson on the

inside. He has hit Felipe Massa. Hamilton is trying to pick his way

through the order. He is driving on the outside. They have touched! How

did they get away with that? Another bit of bodywork has flown off the

car. He needs to be a little bit wary. There is another bit of

contact again. Yes, it was my front wing. And Daniil Kvyat is on fire.

Hamilton has gone past Alonso now. He is in third place. Can he catch

Bottas? Here he comes. That is what is called racing. And Ricciardo

shoves him off again. A terrific dice with the double World Champion.

Hamilton is catching Bottas. Try defending if the attacks. Lewis

Hamilton is running out of time. Nico Rosberg wins the German Grand

Prix. Yes, thank you. The second place goes to Valterri Bottas who

fended off Lewis Hamilton. It brings the gap to 14 points in the

championship. He has got another chance at the

Hungarian Grand Prix, the last chance before the summer break. That

is its car and his team preparing for qualifying. Welcome to

qualifying from Budapest and the Hungaroring. It is a track not used

very often. This man has had five podiums. What is it like to drive

around here? It is hot and it is only used pretty much once a year

for the Grand Prix. This is a physical challenge and a huge

engineering challenge to balance the car and manage the tyres. We know

Mercedes are dominating. Can anybody get near them? This is not about top

speed or acceleration. Williams have shown themselves to be very strong.

And do not write off Fernando Alonso. It has been incredible for

Nico Rosberg. He got married and extended his contract with Mercedes

and he got that result in Hockenheim.

Nico Rosberg wins the German Grand Prix for Mercedes. Take us back to

last weekend. How important was it to get back home when? More

important was to extend the championship lead? Yes, it was

fantastic, it was the second home race of the year. I was fortunate to

win both of them. That seems to be a typical Nico Rosberg response. It is

about the World Championship. Is that a correct assessment? It is

difficult because I am here in Hungary and I am not thinking about

the end of the season and I think short-term and I focus on the moment

without thinking about what could be maybe if in months ahead. Is it a

two horse race? It is still too early to say that, but yes, the

chances are quite high. It is a great battle fighting each other. It

is closed and intense and it is so funny because there are so many

things that happen that are exactly the same as go-karting. The moment

and the attitudes. Yes, it helps to know him better from back in those

days. Some of the staff he is saying is about motivation and nationality

and you do not let it wind you up. If you did not know him so well, it

might wind you up? Is that fair? No, not really. It is not something I

would put much interest into. First of all, I do not hear much about it

and then I do. But I just try and keep a distance to the opinion of

others. I respect it, of course. What have you got in your armoury

against Lewis Hamilton that he has not got? There are plenty of

things, we have our strengths and weaknesses. It is always going to be

a tight battle and I have to be a bit more consistent than the other

guy. Do you like battles like Bahrain where it was wheel-to-wheel

or is there nothing more satisfying than winning by 20 seconds. It is a

lot more satisfying to win like a battle in Bahrain. How is he doing

this? How is he keeping Rosberg behind? It was gloves of and come

out on top. Even in qualifying to be very close and to come out on top.

Hamilton comes across the line and it is not enough. Good job. You have

married your long-term girlfriend and your race engineer has been your

first race engineer when you came in. How important is stability and

continuity? I generally try to keep some stability and make things a bit

more continuous. Change often takes away some energy, I find for

myself, and some focus from what I am here to do. That is my mission at

the moment, to drive a race car fast and even in my private life I think

about it a lot. How is it going to impact my racing? Looking ahead are

you already preparing for a double points showdown in Abu Dhabi? Do you

think it will come down to that? When it is so close and there are so

many points in one race, it is very artificial and I do not like it, but

it is the way it is. I accept that and I am not thinking that far

again. I am only interested in race by race at the moment. Some really

fascinating comment I thought on knowing Hamilton Lewis and also the

personal life and how it affects his racing. How together is he coming

across? You would expect at the midway point in the season they

would be tired and irritable, but he is getting cooler and cooler as the

season goes on with enough spare capacity to get married in his World

Championship winning year. You saw him thinking about it and giving

very general responses. He is intelligent and that is generally

what the opinion is in the paddock. Maybe he has got not quite as much

speed, but he can look at the overall picture with his

intelligence. He is the leading man if we have a

overall picture with his intelligence. He is the look at the

standings. Mercedes are in total command of

this 2014 title chase. They really have got it all going on, but Lewis

has had a problem with qualifying since Monaco, very disappointing for

him. How much does he need to have a clean, productive day today? It is

important ahead of the summer break. But this is a track that he has been

most dominant on. He feels he owns this track. They call it Monte Carlo

without the barriers. He will absolutely wants to as the

qualifying. Pressure is mounting and it will be fascinating to watch.

There have been all the rumours about Sebastien Vettel who may be

moving to Mercedes, and he has had to answer questions on that, is that

distracting to him? I am sure he is confident in his own ability and in

his management team and the fact he does not have a contract beyond

2015. But it is the answering the questions that becomes an annoyance.

Here is news with Tom. It has been confirmed this week

there will be new races on the Formula One calendar. From 2016 the

sport will go to Azerbaijan and next year we will be returning to Mexico

for the first time since 1992. I am really excited we are going to

Mexico. To have a raise in your home country is amazing. The fans are so

enthusiastic. It will become very popular after the first race we do

there. I am sure everybody will be surprised how popular it is. This

crash at Hockenheim Costa Felipe Massa more dearly than was obvious.

The new chassis he is using is unable to accommodate Williams'

newest floor, making him more aggrieved about what happened at

Turn 1 with Kevin Magnussen. It is not the first time Magnusson has

caused problems in the first lap. It was impossible to see on my mirror

there was a car there. I had to be so aggressive with my team-mate on

the first corner and another car hit me. It was really impossible for me

to know there was somebody there as well. Lewis Hamilton enters this

weekend 14 points behind Nico Rosberg. He has a very clear idea of

what he needs to do to reduce the gap. I am looking for a clean

weekend. I do not wish or pray for a luck. I would like to avoid the bad

luck. I have had opportunities and not grant them for a couple of races

in the last five races. In the last race, just as Silverstone, I felt I

had the pace and I was ready and I did not utilise it. I felt that last

weekend, but I did not get to that point, so I am hoping this weekend

could be that point. Mercedes are favourite to win tomorrow, but they

might not have it easy. The tortuous layout is expected to shake up the

order, with Red Bull believing they can push them hard. The downforce,

the change of direction, the corners, this weekend should be

better. You have never finished on the lead lap at this race track. Oh,

thanks! Daniel Ricciardo bursting with energy as always. He is so

relaxed. He has won his first Grand Prix, this is a good team to drive

for and the future is bright. Great to see that enthusiasm. And the best

of the rest this weekend? There is no guarantee Mercedes will dominate

qualifying. This tract lends itself to mechanical rear interaction.

Circumstances dictate it is likely, but it will be close. We heard about

Mexico on the calendar for next year and Azerbaijan. What are your

thoughts on that? I know we can get up to about 20 races, but I am

concerned when you get new events it puts pressure on the old, classic

races. As long as we maintain all the greats, let's go to new places.

Monza is the one with a questionmark over it. It would be tragic for

Formula One when Italy is seeing declining viewing figures. With

Ferrari, the oldest, longest serving name not to turn up at an Italian

Grand Prix? Tom is at Force India. It is not a pretty sight down here.

This is Niko Hulkenberg's car. He had a hydraulics problem at the end

of qualifying this morning. They have assured me they will be out for

the start of Q1, but I am not expecting a lot from any of these

guys because they have been struggling all weekend. Sauber.

So, expect to see them. Putting on the soft tyre early on. There is a

massive 1. 6 second gap between the medium and the soft. So only the top

one or two teams will get through to Q2 using the prime.

And throw in the weather. It looks like it could rain during the

session. Let's get some qualifying. Tom and Jenny in the pit lane, David

and Ben in the combox. # Public enemy number one.

Qualifying is underway on the 2. 7 mile Hungaroring ring and Lewis

Hamilton is looking to take on his team-mate. But first he has to

survive the first 18-minute session with the car. Tom, what is the

target time to aim for and what is the buzz in the pit lane going into

the session? People are saying it will be a 1. 253 to get through to

Q2. That is a big ask for some teams. There are three old and

established teams right on the cut-off. Judging by the times in the

final practise this morning. Force India, Sauber and Lotus will

struggle. So it could be tight. But I have to comment on the

atmosphere. Slightly down on the crowd numbers in Hockenheim last

week but not here. The grandstands are rammed it is wonderful to see.

Tremendous support in the Hungarian Grand Prix event, it has been on the

calendar since 1986. It is a tight circuit. Difficult to overtake on.

Qualifying takes on even more importance. That is why a few cars

are out on the track. Most cars going out on the harder of the two

compound tyres. We have not seen this combination since earlier in

the season. The combination used in Melbourne, Bahrain and China. But a

while since we have seen this specific combination. We may expect

some of the lower teams to go on the soft tyre but let's have a look.

Pastor is to get out, a number of times he has failed.

But so far this weekend, he has greater reliability.

Both Lotus teams delivering laps and Maldanodo has had a clear run.

A rare run, a clean run. Not many like that for them. The

cars generally are more sensitive to front locking now that we have the

real reliance on the hybrid technology that Formula One uses in

2014. And the brake wire system is difficult for the drivers to

regulate the pedal pressure. That looks suspicious. Sorry to

laugh but off the back of what we were saying that is terrible

reliability in the Lotus in the season.

I think that a cursed it, saying he had had no problems. It was true but

then he passed pastor again. Getting out of the car again without even a

lap in qualifying. Look at the way that the shoulders

are trooped. He cannot believe it. And you can see that the McLaren is

bouncing on the tyre. There is a lot of suspension

movement You can see that when we get the close-up shots, the side

walls moving around and it is bouncing on the air balloon of

rubber. Jenson Button sets the time. He is

the fastest. The Caterhams are the only other cars to go out.

Kevin Magnussen going across the line. Not as quick as his team-mate.

Kevin Magnussen quicker than Jenson Button this morning. Now the two

Williams. Let's see what Bottas does. Waiting

for him to come around the final turn. That is Sergio Perez. He is

third. And Bottas now. A fair bit quicker. Sixth tenths of

a second between Bottas and Massa this morning. Here is Nico Rosberg

coming up to the chicane. It looks like he will miss it. He is opening

the steering so as not to flat spot the tyre.

And fire on Lewis Hamilton. Look at the flame and the smoke coming out

of the back of the car. As he tries to get the car in the pit, is this

another major drama for Lewis Hamilton? He is looking for a fire

marshal. Come on, show yourself. He has to get somewhere to sort that

out. Lewis Hamilton's qualifying is over before it even begun. Can you

believe it? ! The car is on fire. Lewis Hamilton is out of the car.

But for the sixth qualifying session in succession, he is not going to be

playing a part to challenge for pole position or will even get pole

position. I cannot believe this run that Lewis Hamilton is having. A car

failure the last time out in Germany and some sort of presumably power

unit failure, it looked like an oil unit that ignited.

Those flames are not coming from the carbon firebrand. That is being

ignited. We will find out in time. But whatever the failure on the car,

it is manifested itself in a fuel line or something. It pretty much

ignites here. By the time we see him in the pit lane it is well alight

from under the top body. I've got fire, guys.

Lewis park up where you can find a marshal. There is one there. Pup

there. Stop. Stop. Stop. The car will not stop! OK, the marshal is

behind you. Jump out. We have seen some wins for British

drivers from way down. But Lewis Hamilton is going to be last on the

grid. He has not set a time at all in the session.

We are still waiting to see how the session develops. But no time

established for Lewis Hamilton. Everyone will get a timing. Pastor

Maldonado will not be setting a time. I suppose that is a prospect

he may be ahead of. But apart from that, going back to the previous

session. He was ahead of Pastor Maldonado on practise, so one place

ahead in the grid. Yes, this qualifying session

compares to a 24. 0 that he did this morning on the option tyre. So we

reckon about 1. 6 seconds available in the difference to the tyres. It

may be less than that now. It could be more, actually. But

these conditions over when the sun a beating down, it takes the sting out

of the track temperature. Look at the slow walk of disappointment.

Unsurprisingly. Well, a walk reminiscent of my Fife-year-old when

I have said he cannot have any more biscuits! What does he have to do,

though, David? He is driving his heart out this year. He is so exited

to win this World Championship but every race recently, something goes

wrong for him. Well that type of frustration that

we are seeing from Lewis Hamilton is exactly the reason he left McLaren.

A run of bad results. In the end he walked away from McLaren in

Singapore, the crucial moment and Nicki Lauder swooped and persuaded

him to come to Mercedes. It is sod's law, whatever you want

to call it. This is not anything that the teem can influence.

It is just the way that it is happening. So, up front, Rosberg is

fastest. Daniel Riccardio is close. A tenth behind. And Red Bull four

tenths off this morning. Sebastian Vettel is close behind. Red Bull

able to challenge Mercedes more. But look at the mess of that car.

Out goes the Toro Rosso. Interestingly, a lot of teams are

now switching on to the soft tyres to go for the maximum performance

available. For the likes of Force India and Sauber, they must be

careful. They have been helped by the fact that Pastor Maldonado and

Lewis Hamilton are out of qualifying. That has been a huge

relief for the likes of Force India and Sauber. But who knows. We will

wait to see who comes out. Grosjean is out on a final lap. It

is getting busy out there. We can see some of the Mercedes

mechanics putting a blanket over the top the Mercedes. That is to hide

it. Now Gr Serious Organised Crime

Agencies sjean. This is clearly a difficult car to drive this season

-- now to Grosjean. This is where you build the speed.

Flat out through ten. Down a gear, maybe into 11. Using the road and

then it drops down into the braking zone of 12. Toro Rosso gives space.

A short burst of acceleration into a long hair pin. Wider on the entry

but pulling back well to get the acceleration. Bumpy in the last

turn. That is something that really sets

this track apart from many others. You must exit the entry speed at the

point of turning. You don't know how much rear stability you have, until

you are loading the rear of the car. It make it is very difficult. People

like Lewis Hamilton have done so well on this circuit but he is

clearly not taking part in the qualifying session. Perez lines the

car up for good acceleration. Let's see what Perez does. A 125. 9.

Quicker than Grosjean. It could be Force India and Lotus at the lower

end. And Nico Hulkenberg into 16th. We did see him qualifying in

practise. If you get a second lap out of the tyres, they are not so

ruined. That was a mistake. I wondered what happened to Nico

Hulkenberg. I lost it in the last corner.

That is interesting. Grosjean losing the back end. Nico Hulkenberg

rotating the inside wheel. That indicates the roll in the car taking

the load from the inside Axel. And what about this for Verne.

With the soft tyre on you leap up the order.

Quicker than this morning on the same tyre. A couple of tens. That

suggests that the free practise run was down on a fuel qualifying

weight. Not as quick on this occasion.

Third fastest. Now, Kobayashi.

He has dropped into the zone where you will not make it through. But

look how little he is off Nico Hulkenberg. We know that he made the

mistake. But he could come back for a lap. If Kobayashi could find a

tenth of a second, he could knock Nico Hulkenberg out. Max Chiltern is

going nicely. He had a fire on Friday morning. That looked worrying

that he was going that slowly. He is not looking for a place in the

traffic. There is an issue with the car.

You can hear it. It is not running right at all.

That is a great disappointment. And there is his team-mate,

That is a great disappointment. And there Bianchi going tonne a quick

lap. And Grosjean who had made it through, we think, he has had a

problem with the brakes in the last couple of corners, they are going to

sort that out. So, Bianchi, can he attack

hulkenburg's time? It may be hobble? Kobayashi has been matched in the

first sector, so the battle for teem honours is on.

Hulkenberg is on a lap that should see him move. It is a better area of

safety. Where he is now he could be under threat from Bianchi.

sector. The middle is not fantastic. He gets the last corner right this

time. And this may be a slight improvement but not much.

Kimi Raikkonen, he does move a bit. Kimi Raikkonen did his time on a

medium compound tyre, as did button, Kevin Magnussen and Massa. So others

that are confident that they have gotten through on the harder

compound tyre, as have Bottas, Sebastian Vettel and Rosberg. And

Bianchi has knocked Kimi Raikkonen out! Ferrari have miscalculated.

They have been beaten by the Marussia-Ferrari with the same power

unit by the test driver who drove Kimi Raikkonen's car at Silverstone

a few weeks ago. Would you believe it! Bianchi is into Q2 with

Marussia. These are the riders who are out.

Dramatic scenes, that is one of those sessions where you have to

think, did that actually happen? Lewis Hamilton out of qualifying

with this problem that resulted in the fire. Very dejected and looking

at his car in total disbelief. That is exactly how any of us would feel.

Lewis, how are you and how is the car from the first leg? The car has

been burnt to shreds, so we have to replace the engine and gearbox. The

good thing is even if I get that penalty, I cannot go any further

back. You must be upset, you looked upset. You have got a hell of a

fightback again. Yes, there are lots of things going through my mind, but

I had to try and turn it into a positive for tomorrow. You asked not

to have bad luck before, that has not worked out. Yes, it is getting

to the point that it is beyond bad luck. We need to do better. We have

just heard it was a high-pressure fuel leak. Ben and David, Lewis is

looking fairly fed up with what is going on and understandably so.

He had the brake failure in qualifying at Hockenheim and now

there's one week later, it is tough to take. It is indeed. It is a high

fuel pressure failure and that could be anything, it could be fatigue in

the park itself. Maybe what Lewis is saying, we need to do better, could

be relating to that. There are too many niggly things on his side of

the garage. The old cliche is you win together and you lose together,

but that is not helping him now. Is this one of these situations where

if things keep happening to him like this, he will think everything is

going against him and it will be a problem. Earlier this year he

bounced back from disappointment and he is mentally checking himself as

he is answering the questions not only to the BBC, but to the world's

media where he has to talk about the disappointment of qualifying. At the

same time he is trying to dig deep and saying, how do I turn this into

a positive? I am a great racing driver. Can I win this Grand Prix?

Unlikely, but not impossible. It will be very difficult from 21st to

come forward. We will see Lewis Hamilton tomorrow, the racer. We

will have to and even in these days of DRS it is not that much easier.

To watch him come from the back it will be a spectacle, but he will

have to plan it very carefully and not get into the situations that he

got into in Hockenheim. More qualifying and this is cute too.

What a dramatic day already it is proving to be in Hungary. Lewis

Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen are out of qualifying. Now we get to see who

makes it into the top ten. Jenson Button was only 12 this morning.

Magnusson made it into eighth place, in the last few minutes of this

session we will be building up to the climax to see who makes it into

the top ten. Rosberg looks to be in good shape. Red Bull could end up

with a car on the front row. We have seen Sebastien Vettel qualify on the

front row, in the British Grand Prix. Daniel Ricciardo's last front

row was the Chinese Grand Prix. Valterri Bottas in the Williams

could still threaten. They do not look quite as strong as they did in

Germany. The twisty nature of this track favours Red Bull over

Williams. But let's not count them out. Even Alonso can sometimes pull

something special out of the bag. Plenty to look forward to in this

session. This is Sergio Perez as he comes out of the final turn. He

heads towards the helicopter, getting the picture of the next

shot. David, what is he trying to achieve? He is making sure he has

got everything primed for Turn 1. Turn to is a long left-hander and

you have to roll the speed in and you drop down. The camera angle does

not do it justice. Down to three flat out. Up over the hill, which is

difficult because you cannot see the apex. Turn five is another long

hairpin taken with good speed. Up to seventh and back down into second

gear for the chicane. You have to be disciplined as you go through. This

section is where it gets physical, through eighth and ninth and flat

out through ten. Pull the car back across to the right-hand side for 11

and that is threading a high-speed needle. Dropping downhill and heavy

the brakes as you get into 12. Then a short blast into 13. Additionally

it used to be very bumpy on the exit. Great images from the past of

cars hopping and skipping as they get ready to come into this very

long last turned 14, opened the DRS and go for the line. This is Niko

Hulkenberg. He made a big mistake into the last corner in Q1. We can

ride with him. Much better this time. He gets the apex. They have to

wait a long time. Yes, he is quicker than parents. It is unusual in

qualifying to hear them off throttle for such a long time. Coasting

before breaking and generally being patient. I would have expected to

hear him hassling a bit more with the throttle. Daniil Kvyat goes

faster than Force Indias. They will be struggling to get into the top

ten. Bianchi is getting an early lap in. Let's see what he can do. If

anybody else has a problem, he has got an opportunity to pick up some

places. Valterri Bottas is on a good lap. It beats Hamilton's target from

this morning. We have not quite got 1.23, but we might be seeing it

soon. Nico Rosberg is not the fastest in the first sector. That

fastest time in the first sector was established by Valterri Bottas. He

is looking very strong. This is the middle sector and where the Mercedes

games at the time. But it is a mixture of using the car and getting

the downforce through those medium speed corners that has helped

Rosberg. We could be into 1.23. Yes, suddenly he is nearly seven

tenths of a second faster than Valterri Bottas. Alonso is third.

Felipe Massa's first run was disappointing. Did he make a

mistake? The images tell us he did. He lost the rear end coming out of

five. He loses the rear axle and as he corrects, you see the tell-tale

signs of under rotation on the right. That will explain some of the

offset in performance to his young, Finnish team-mate. RADIO: We might

have a hydraulic leak. Now it sounds like it is Peres in trouble. It

could mean the end of his qualifying. He is night at the

moment, but he will drop down the order. Meanwhile, there may have

been a fuel problem on Hamilton's car. It may well have been fuel that

initiated that fire. Sebastien Vettel is fastest in the middle

sector. How close can he get to Rosberg? That was a good effort.

Talking to Christian Horner that is what he believed the offset could be

if he hooked everything up. It is a smaller gap we have been seeing of

late and reflect the nature of the circuit. Let's keep an eye on

Ricciardo who is on a good lap as well. He is just a fraction behind

this time. Joining us is the technical director at Williams, Pat

Symonds. A very good initial run from Valterri Bottas, but there was

a little error from Felipe Massa. Absolutely a bit of a lock-up on the

front. That cost a little bit, which matters so much because this is

going to be a close qualifying session, there is no doubt about it.

The Red Bulls and the Ferraris are pretty close. We know a new chassis

had to be built up because of the accident last week, but also a new

floor. Will that have an effect on his performance? We simply ran out

of the latest spec of floors with the accidents we have had in the

last few weeks, so we rolled back to previous floors. Bottas'

performances have been impressive. Are we seeing a future star here?

All the evidence is there. He is quick. More than that he is also

very intelligent. He is looking after his tyres very well and he is

a racer and can overtake, but he understands exactly what the car is

doing and is getting the best from it. Good luck with the rest of

qualifying. Let's see who is going to make it through into the last

part. It is a shame to see Sergio Perez standing by the sidelines.

Force India seem to have a problem with Niko Hulkenberg's car. Yes, it

is looking that way. We have had a lots of technical issues up and down

the pit lane. People said it was due to the hot conditions and the lack

of straights to cool the car, but it could be any number of factors.

Reliability is raising its head this weekend. That is a good point, Tom.

These cars are so complicated. When you see the amount of hydraulics,

they have always been complex machines, but never as complex as

they are now. RADIO: We will go for one time. I cannot imagine he is

under any pressure with that lap time last time around. He is safely

through to the top ten. Felipe Melo so needs to do some work because he

is six and needs to put together a good lap because he could see

improvement from those around him. They need to make sure both cars get

into the top three. Turn for four years ago was where he had his

accident in qualifying. A spring from another car, from Rubens Marian

Kello's car, and hit Felipe Massa. It is great to see him driving so

well, with that pole position in Austria, but he needs more luck in

races. He brings speed to Williams. We know he has always had good,

single lack speed -- single lap speed. He has won 11 Grand Prix, not

by accident, but by good skills. He went through a period after the

accident when we questioned whether he would ever get back to top form.

He is going to do a good lap. Felipe Massa is faith and he is much closer

to the time that Bottas did earlier on. Pat Symonds, who we can see in

the middle of the shop, will be happy and relieved. Again he is

getting wide. Struggling in that last corner to get that Force India

in. He is just in the top ten, but we will see a few more improvements

and that may not be enough. This is a better lap from Bottas, but he is

comfortably through. Some drivers are not bothering to go back out.

Adrian Sutil, 12th, that is impressive, bearing in mind they

have been struggling. We still have got the top ten shoot out to go. We

have got a spin for Daniil Kvyat. It has all gone wrong for him, he was

improving. It looks like he has run over some damp patch on the track.

This is breaking down into turn 12. And that might have saved Nico

Hulkenberg. Driver going past that section will have had to shown a

loss of speed. Sutil had crossed the line. We know

that Perez is out of the session and it is end of session for anybody

else to improve and Nico Hulkenberg has scraped into the top ten.

Verne in the other Toro Rosso is in the top ten. Both McLarens are

there. One Ferrari, both Williams, both Red Bulls and one Mercedes. But

out of qualifying after good performances but a little error in

the race today from Kobayashi. So, Grosjean is not happy he was not

ahead of Sutil but one man that is happy is this man. Congratulations

for getting through. It is great for us. I am really

happy for the time. It shows we can do it some times. What difference do

you feel in the car since the suspension has changed? It is

difficult to manage, to set up. On Friday it was unstable. There was a

difficulty taking the corners. But we tuned it tonight and yesterday

night and we improved a lot. The Caterhams have looked good and

seem to have closed the gap, so how vital is it to start ahead of them?

It is good, for sure. We have to be in front of the race from them and I

think that the battle will be tight. Cars are already beginning to gather

at the end of the pit lane before Q 3 even starts. The weather

conditions are changing. Tom, what is happening there.

I am getting wet in the pit lane. Before the start of the session, we

said there was a 30% chance of the rain arriving. Interesting to see

that the Mercedes are out first. Ready to go with Rosberg. But if the

rain continues it will be slippery to affect the lap times in the

session. In the conditions, you must be first

on track. That is where Rosberg is, not where Sebastian Vettel is.

McLaren responded by getting the cars out but where is Red Bull?

Daniel Riccardio ahead of Sebastian Vettel.

It looks like they were doing something on the car with Sebastian

Vettel and missed out the opportunity to do what Rosberg did.

So you could argue that they have to cover both ends, one from the front

and then one to the back. So the rain is changing quickly. We

have to get this one clean lap. Verne being told what to do.

Button, sorry, Kevin Magnussen is running second on the track. That is

not a bad position. If you have issues where Rosberg has

difficulties, you can see and you don't need to worry about catching

him. So Kevin Magnussen can afford to leave a wee gap to Rosberg and

the benefit of a slipstream. Adrian Newey is there, he can feel

the rain on his head before he sees it.

Well, let's see what happens. Is this an opportunity for Red Bull or

one of the other teams? Rosberg will get the driest track but he cannot

afford to fall off. The rain coming down now, it is

difficult to tell where it is on the circuit. But in the danger zone. So

Kevin Magnussen is keeping the gap close. Jenson Button, a man who has

won... Rosberg has gone off! Kevin Magnussen may see that! Has Kevin

Magnussen made the corner. He has crashed! Kevin Magnussen was in the

barrier. The next to go to the front corner, where is Jenson Button. Did

he get around? The red flag is off. The driver is stuck in the car under

the tyres. As I suggested, the first man is not always the best place to

be. In the end, Kevin Magnussen has come off much worse.

He should have been able to react, seeing Rosberg ahead of him locking

up. It is so difficult to judge the

conditions when it is changing but it is the rookie Kevin Magnussen who

has failed to get it right. So, how much rain will we get? If it

continues to fall, they may have to change tyres? Yes. Well, he can't

make it around the corner. That is the point where it is not about

standing water but the tyre cooling too much. You don't get the surface

temperature. So Rosberg ahead. We will see him in the break braking

zone. It locks up. Kevin Magnussen was not able to react to that. He

piled straight in. Jenson Button does react to that. Then of course

an effect of all of the cars behind getting better.

Are you OK? Yeah, I'm good. He made that initial lock and did

what you are told to do, to come off the brakes but that was the worst

thing to do. It ran out of space. Oh, it just catches the edge of the

tyre wall. It needed to be longer, by the looks of it.

The final part of qualifying is getting underway. Re-starting after

the red flag for Kevin Magnussen's accident. It looks as though

everyone is going out on slick tyres. So slippery down at the turns

one and two but the rest of the track is being reported as dry. It

may dry up a bit. Daniel Riccardio and Rosberg ahead.

He will be comfortable with that, to keep the gap at three seconds as he

crosses the line. But he will benefit from Mercedes creating a bit

ofle a hole in the air. Amazing the benefits of a slipstream. Tom, the

weather conditions? It has stopped raining where I am.

Jenson Button is still not out. Let's listen to radio.

So we are planning to do three times and one time, Nico. We cannot back

off too much in the middle. So batteries full straight away,

warming the brakes. Give advice on the track conditions.

If the adrenaline was not pumping for Rosberg as Hamilton had gone

out, I bet that the adrenaline is there now.

He does. Reassuring words from the engineer, the battery is full.

Not sure about the feedback with the sessions to go on the track. He just

needs to concentrate on delivering a lap time that he believes is quick

enough for Paul. The Red Bulls are gone out on a used

set of tyres. Well, Daniel Riccardio has.

A bit cautious there from Rosberg, unsurprisingly.

And he can afford to be. The middle sector has the advantage. But if

somebody takes a lung at the first sector, perhaps they can beat him.

He has a three-lap run. With the time that is available, you

could split the session up. When you mentioned the Mercedes having an

advantage in the middle sector, Sebastian Vettel has the fastest lap

of all. Somehow Sebastian Vettel and the rebel team have found

performance and balance at the first part of the qualifying session.

Bottas is quicker than Rosberg. Bottas flying through a second

faster than Rosberg. But we know that Rosberg is doing a longer run.

It must be all about the next flying lap. Someone making an adjustment to

the steering there. That is part of the harvesting. Making sure that the

battery is ready for the flying lap. The tyre temperatures, pressures,

brakes. And Daniel Riccardio has gone faster

in the middle sector. But now you will see a real lap from Daniel

Riccardio. -- Nico Rosberg. Now it is Bottas, Roman Catholic,

Rosberg, who set the initial pace, as we ride on board with Felipe

Massa. Short shifting in the middle of the

last corner. Then he deploys the DRS. Crossing

the line. Only third. A slower than the teem meat.

So a second down on the times from Q2. I wonder if we will get back to

that level. Fernando Alonso is good at reading the conditions. But he is

second. Quicker than the Red Bull on the first flying lap. But the track

conditions are getting drier. Jenson Button is with us now.

It's been a reasonable lap for Jenson but nothing to challenge the

top two. There is a huge roll in the McLaren.

Daniel Riccardio has gone quicker than anyone in the middle sector.

But interestingly, Rosberg has backed off. He has backed off in the

middle sector. He is sixthth. We know he has a lap to do. But it is

surprising he did not keep it going flat out. Daniel Riccardio is up to

second now. Bottas is fastest.

Sebastian Vettel is on a very good lap. A stunning lap. Fastest in the

middle sector. This should move him ahead of Bottas. Rosberg, we are

waiting for him to respond. He has gone on to another lap. But the

tyres have done their work? The Red Bull is showing pace in the middle

sector. A tenth slower from Rosberg in Q2. So fully dry conditions.

Nico Hulkenberg, a chance to move up. He is fourth in the Force India.

That is a good effort. They did not have a good qualifying pace this

morning. Rosberg was only 800th slower than

the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel. Is this enough to beat Sebastian

Vettel? Yes. Rosberg is quicker. Only just under two tenth of a

second faster than Vettel but he is in front for the moment.

And now Valtteri Bottas sent on his second go on a new set of tyres. Is

there a chance for Bottas to claim something special here.

Now let's see if Vergne does enough to challenge Force India. Yes, he

does. Vergne has been fast in qualifying

but not the race finishes, that he has not been so lucky with.

Now the track is getting busier. We have nine cars on the track. So

basically all of them that are in the session that remain. And there

is Jenson Button. He is half a second down on the

best. What can he do in the second part? Always neat and tidy.

It is a track that you have to hustle the car. It doesn't look like

he can be as aggressive with the McLaren. Sometimes it can be

perception with gen. On as he is a sploot driver. But then the incar

shot, you can see a different set-up on the McLaren. A lot more physical

mechanical role. Let's see if he moves up the order a bit. He is

fourth at the moment but a second away from what Rosberg has done.

This is a vital lap. It is quicker than Massa in the first sector and

now, does he have enough to challenge Rosberg and Vette

Sebastian Vettel and force them to grow across the line. Very close.

Faster than anybody in the final sector at this stage. Massa comes

through, he is fourth. He is a little more than that off.

He is front line tenth of a second slower than Bottas. So Pat simmons

suggested it was a couple of takens, the other is a balance of

confidence. Can Fernando Alonso do it? You would

think that Daniel Riccardio, with a lap, he may be able to fill the

space there. Daniel Riccardio has Massa up ahead

of him. That was a fantastic qualifying performance.

Setting himself up. And the tyres holding on.

The soft tyre allowing them to get a second flying lap. So Jenson Button

has crossed the line. He is sixth with that.

Let's watch Sebastian Vettel. Two tenth away from Rosberg. 31. 0, the

fastest man of them all. He has gone a tenth quicker in the middle sect

over. It will be close. Sebastian Vettel has been on pole in

the past. He crosses the line. He is pastest. But Rosberg is still in for

a quick lap. Will Sebastian Vettel hold on to the position, or will it

be stolen away. Here comes the Mercedes. He has done it. By a

margin in the end! Nearly half a second, the advantage for Nico

Rosberg. Alonso is in fifth place. But it is seven, Jean-Eric Vergne is

eight, and Hulk and bird is night. It is the sixth pole position of the

year for Nico Rosberg, three in a row, and his first ever front row

start in Hungary. RADIO: Well done, pole position, good effort. Well

done. Nico Rosberg enjoying the moment once again as he takes pole

position. He is getting used to this. It is ten out of 11 pole

positions for Mercedes this year. Sixth polls this year, third

consecutive pole, did you expect to have so much at the end? Not really

because through qualifying it was all a bit closer, but I nailed the

lap in the end, so I was happy with that. There were a couple of places

where it you were a bit wide. Is that part of the tactics? Turn five

has the best grip not hitting the apex, so it was on purpose. A racing

driver would always say that. That was on purpose. What was going

through your head when it started to rain? It was very difficult because

also it could have been that lap that counts. I got to Turn 1 and it

was wet and I did not know how much risk to take and I took it a bit

easy and that helped me in the end. Then it dried up after that and it

was easier. You do not have the straight line speed advantage than

on other tracks. Is that a factor of this circuit, looking at the top

line speeds? That we have an advantage? No, you have got less,

are you running more downforce? I am not too sure, but I think we are

maxed out on downforce because of the regulations. You cannot get

enough downforce on the car. But Williams are still massively

impressive. That was a mistake, you are right, that was a bit wide. How

much would that have cost you? Not much because there is grip further

out in the corner. Tomorrow, do raise, that is what counts, how are

you feeling about that? Well, of course I am happy starting first and

it is a free opportunity with Lewis starting at the back and I have to

use it and make as many points as possible. The weather could play a

role, it is supposed to be raining and it could be more interesting.

But my car is fast in either condition. I should be able to win

the race hopefully and I will try and go for that. The team

perspective today, it is not a good day with what happened to Lewis. I

do not want to see that, we need to keep pushing on the reliability.

Where we are at the moment I am enjoying the battle, the gloves off,

fighting and in the races and in qualifying, so I am by no means

ecstatic about my pole position. I would have much preferred to beat

him fair and square on the track. We would have liked to see that as

well. Thank you. Sebastien Vettel, back on the front

row and back in the room. Do you feel as if you have made a step

forward this weekend? To be honest we did not have that many new parts.

It has only been a week since Hockenheim. I would love to say yes,

but realistically I have to say no. The track helps us a bit.

Historically we have been strong here. All that together allowed us

to finally beat the Williams on a Saturday. It could have been a

better lap, you had a small lock-up in turn to. But you have good

straight-line speed, so you have to peel good for the race against

Mercedes tomorrow. Yes, I was quite happy. You know how tricky turn to

can be, but I had a good X it. I had some small mistakes later in the

lap. At turn 12 I went wider than I wanted, but not enough to put Nico

Rosberg under pressure. He had a good final lap. It was important to

go with the track and the conditions and use the tyres in qualifying.

What do you think about tomorrow? Did David asked that before? You did

not answer it. I got so carried away apologising about turn to. The rain

is somewhere around, we do not know if it will come down and if so, by

how much. Anything is possible. In normal, dry conditions we know

Mercedes has the upper hand. It might be tricky for Lewis to come

through the field because overtaking should be more difficult. But we do

not focus on that, we have to focus on ourselves. Let's hear from

Daniel. That was a crazy qualifying

session. Are you happy? I am not really happy with the result to be

honest, especially with Lewis out. He should have been fighting for the

front row and the top three. We were looking good in the session and when

the rain came down we struggled to get the tyres in and it felt like

everything was not up to temperature. You know, we will try

and learn something from that. I think fourth was an under today. You

looked like you're having fun today, that was great lap. It was. When it

matters it always feels good when you get the best lap of the weekend.

Actually, I was surprised how much we could still find time and how the

track improved. It was still completely dry at the end.

starting to find your feet in the middle part of the season. Has there

been something that has given you that extra confidence? I have to say

in every race more and more I feel confident in the car and I feel at

one with the car more and more. It gives you confidence. We have been

able to improve the downforce of the car and we have more downforce here

than we had in the previous race. That gives you confidence and the

feeling of the car. You talked to the team on the radio at the end and

you sounded thrilled. What did you say? After the lap? Yes. I think I

said it was a good lap. Did you say it was a perfect lap? You can never

say a perfect lap, I do not know if it exists. It was as good as it

gets. Any chance of the podium? Here it is going to be more difficult

than the last three. Red Bull have more pace and Mercedes is quicker

here than compared to us. It will not be easy, but we need to target

that. It is a long run from the grid to Turn 1. If we can get one of them

at least in the beginning and try and keep them behind as long as

possible, it is possible and with it and aim for that. Good luck. Neither

of these two have everyone in Hungary before.

The likelihood is that due to extensive repairs required, Hamilton

will join Kevin Magnussen in starting from the pit lane.

It looks like the pit lane will be very busy tomorrow. We are outside

Mercedes, they must be working away. They are. They had never seen a car

like it. They have to change the engine, the Turbo, the hybrid

system, the gearbox and more than likely the chassis itself, which

means it will start from the pit lane. That is a complete rebuild.

Normally in the factory it is one and a half days, so I would expect

about ten or 11 hours. It will be hard work for the mechanics. It is

hot and humid. Such a dramatic session with Kevin Magnussen having

that crash. What do you make of his chances? Getting caught out in those

changeable conditions and locked in those changeable conditions and

locked into a great opportunity for him to show his skills. Nico Rosberg

got away with it in front of him. We can see Nico Rosberg running wide

and Magnussen not able to use that information. He will be kicking

himself for that mistake, but it is an opportunity for him to show his

driving skills and work his way forward because McLaren has been

competitive here. Kimi Raikkonen is furious with Harare. That is

unforgivable that strategy error, isn't it? Basically it only required

two tenths of a second for him to be out and sitting there. He was seven

tenths of a second slower than Fernando Alonso and they played the

gamble and it did not work. That is twice since Silverstone that the

strategy has failed him. There will be questions asked in Ferrari

debriefed tonight. We can catch all the action live tomorrow. We will

have all the best bits for you. Fuel flow problems, fire and

frustration for a Lewis Hamilton. He came from the back and ripped

through the field last weekend. Can he do it again?

We will soon find out. Qualifying is underway. A major drama for

Hamilton. He has knocked Kimi Raikkonen out. The weather

conditions are changing. You need to be first on track. Magnussen is into

the barrier. It is the sixth pole position of the year for Nico

Rosberg.
